Zanussi ZWF01483W review

 Review: December 2015

Rating: 3 stars

In a nutshell: The Zanussi ZWF01483W washing machine from the company's LINDO300 range can handle huge loads of up to 10kg - ideal for washing duvets. It's a mid-priced appliance with a high A+++ energy efficiency rating, and an inverter motor. We're not so keen on the budget styling of the machine though, and washing times are well above average.

Best buy: Zanussi ZWF01483W from Next Domestic Appliances (£340.00)

Design

We don't necessarily judge a book by its cover, or a kitchen appliance by its looks, but Zanussi has seemingly gone out of its way to make this washing machine look cheap. The white metal and plastic finish of the Zanussi ZWF01483W makes it look like a budget machine, even though it isn't. The flimsy door is easy enough to open and close, but makes us question the robustness of this product.

The control panel is unusual, being all push buttons. It's not quite as quick or easy to select a wash programme as with a rotary dial, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work it out. There's a small LCD display that shows the programme status, but again, it's almost like Zanussi designed it to look cheap.

Washing and performance

Perhaps the star feature of this washing machine is its enormous 10kg capacity. 10kg is a monster load that will be too large for most people. You'll need a big family if you're going to make use of this potential, otherwise you'll be running with half loads most of the time.

The ZWF01483W washes well enough, and has a decent choice of washing programmes - Mini 30, Cotton, Cotton Economy, Synthetics, Delicate, Wool Plus, Duvets, and Mix 20. The AutoSense feature automatically senses the load and adjusts wash time accordingly.

We have to draw your attention to a key fact, however. This is a very slow washing machine. A full 60° cotton cycle takes an astonishing 4 hours to complete, although a quick 30 minute option is available. It's just as well that the capacity is so huge, because you'll want to save your laundry for one giant wash.

Spin performance for this machine is average, with a maximum speed of 1400rpm and a "B" spin rating.

The washing machine scores well for energy efficiency, with an A+++ rating. That's partly due to its use of an efficient inverter motor, and perhaps also the long wash cycles.

The machine isn't as quiet as we were hoping, considering that it has an inverter motor. It's averagely noisy in both wash and spin modes, with some vibration evident from the slightly flimsy construction.

Reliability

We don't have any hard data to rate the reliability of this machine. Zanussi products don't have a particularly good or bad reputation for reliability. The inverter motor should be durable, but at the same time the build quality of the appliance doesn't instil a lot of confidence in its longevity.

Conclusion - a high-capacity machine with budget styling

The Zanussi ZWF01483W is available for under £400, putting it right in the mainstream of the UK washing machine market. For the money you get a machine with a very high load capacity, capable of washing duvets and very full loads, and one that's very energy efficient too. Wash programmes are very slow however, and the machine doesn't have any other features to recommend it.

It's worth comparing this machine with the Beko WMG10454W washing machine, which costs about the same and also has a 10kg washing capacity.
