Sony Ericsson Z530i Review
Phone rating:
Review: July 2006.
The Sony Ericsson Z530i is the replacement for the Z520i.
It's a compact clamshell phone, although slightly larger than the Z520i.
The keypad is really not very nice - for some strange reason Sony Ericsson
have replaced the perfectly good keypad on the Z520i with one that is
both ugly and difficult to use. Texters beware! Disappointingly too,
the colour external screen of the Z520i has been replaced with a monchrome
STN display on the Z530i - a display that is very difficult to read
outdoors.
Functionally the phone is virtually the same as the Z520i - featuring
a below average camera & video camera, an MP3 player, speakerphone and
good connectivity (Bluetooth, infrared, USB & Fast Port). In another
backward step, the Z530i is only triband (Z520i was quadband). However,
the Z530i does have one key improvement - the introduction of support
for a memory card, so you can store a lot more MP3 tracks and videos.
This is the one and only improvement that we could find. Users are reporting
a variety of problems with this phone, from random freezing and shutting
down to Bluetooth errors and poor audio quality. Probably one to avoid!
Features of the Sony Ericsson Z530i include:
- VGA camera (640 x 480 pixels) with 4x digital zoom and picture editor
- Video recorder with VideoDJ™ video-editing software
- Main display: TFT, 65,536 colours, 128 x 160 pixels
- External display: STN, monochrome
- Media player: MP3/AAC (audio), MPEG4 (video)
- Speakerphone
- Sound recorder
- Voice controls
- 40-voice polyphonic ringtones / MP3 ringtones
- MusicDJ™ application for creating polyphonic ringtones
- Exchangeable Style-Up covers
- Messaging: SMS, EMS, MMS, Instant Messaging,
E-mail
- Java™ games: embedded & downloadable
- Animated wallpaper, screensaver, themes
- Picture phonebook
- Personal organiser functions
- Memory: 28 Mbytes plus Memory Stick Micro support
- WAP 2.0, GPRS
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, infrared, USB, Fast Port
- Vibration alert
- Triband
- Size: 90 x 47 x 24 mm
- Weight: 93g
- Talktime: 9 hours
- Battery standby: 400 hours

Only bought the phone today, but it seems ok to me. Main thing for mew
is that people can call and text me, and this does the job well. As
people have mentioned, the camera doesn't seem great, but taking great
photographs is the domain of cameras rather than phones, in my opinion.
Other than that and a few really grating ringtones, it's a great little
phone for the money.

I had a Siemens CL75 for about a month and had to get rid of it (too
complicated and had to re-charge daily). I read lots of reviews about
the SEZ530i and bought it when it was only available in China. What
a wonderful phone. I don't do all the technical stuff (MP3, e-mailing,
etc that the kids do) but I do use it a lot for texting, and even my
fat fingers can use it just fine. I find the menus great, a lot like
using Windows, and as a phone it's perfect for me. I love only having
to re-charge it once a week, and for photos of my daughter in the park
it's been just fine, taken a few good ones (sure, it's not great, but
it's a PHONE!) - I got the memory card for that purpose. I love this
phone! Now all i need is a cheaper package lol

After watching the other reviews here I didn't see anyone else having
the problem I'm having with this phone. I like the design and I can
understand the bad quality of photos, but the problem for me is a battery.
It just doesn't stay charged more than 1 day!!! I went back to the place
where I bought it and they said that it's a new kind of battery that
takes a month or so to start working correctly. I have no idea wether
to believe it or not, but the phone as it is now, is not good AT ALL!

we can't, except sony eric z530i..ofcurz the clarity of the pic may
not be soo clear, the audio may not be so loudy, but if u are goin for
a cheap phone, naturally we can't expect all those things..Expandable
memory slot is still advantages and i bet nobody can get such low cost

Im a huge text fan on phones and this fone quite frankly is the poorest
fone i have ever used for texting. My constant phone has been the Motorola
V980. It has 500ish characters avaliable FOR ONE TEXT MESSAGE. This
phone has just 150 characters for one message plus the annoyance of
easily hitting the wrong button and deleting what has just been written.
I got the phone and within 2 days sent it back from where it came from
it just didnt feel right to me going from the big chunky realtively
normality of my motorola to this i felt i had lost a part of me!!! .

I have had this phone for a few months now, I bought it fairly cheap
as I am a bit of a mobile-a-ohlic and buy new ones far too frequently!
Firstly the keys are big enough to actually text without hitting other
buttons at the same time, the dictionary however is quite limited and
I found I had to type some words in myself..and no they weren't swear
words! The menu is easy to navigate and most things are pretty functional.
The ringtones leave alot to be desired I had thought that by now phone
companies would have caught on and stopped putting their cheesy versions
of miami vice and spooky in their phones. My advice for this phone is
to use MP3. (which you can't use for texts) The ringtone volume is quite
low as is the text message alerts, some of them you can barely hear.
Not a good gift for your grandparents, perhaps a good phone for those
with selective hearing that just can't be bothered to text, now you
have a legit excuse. Overall this is a good little phone for texting
and making phone calls. The camera is poor the quality is very poor
so don't think you can get away with taking decent photos on a saturday
night, it isn't going to happen! I thought that I would get a clamshell
phone as I tend make annonymous phone calls if it's in my bag, however
I am starting to get sick of opening and closing it for every text and
phone call...time for a new one!! This is a decent little phone and
would recommend it.

prettier than the z520i and it feels nice in your hand! Its not expensive

friends. It has changeble covers (LOVE that feature)and the monochrome
screen is not at all hard to read! Also i am very clumsy and have dropped
it down the stairs smashed it into the corner of a wooden post, trood
on it, splashed it on a boat trip, and had my next door neighbors dog
try to eat it and there is not a single mark on it! ITS INDESTRUCTABLE!
perfect for clumsy people like me. It also has large keys so it makes
it easy for you to press the key you intended to! The only thing i would

I've always had Nokia phones but liked the look of this...wrong! It's
'ok' but bad points I've found are; You can easily erase the text you
just wrote as the buttons are too small. Ridiculous back key that you
have to press frequently. Camera is poor quality. Too many menus half
of which are un-necessary. If you are on O2...don't get this phone!
Reception fantastic but you try and get the settings for email etc.
I've had this phone 3 months and it still isn't working. O2 say it's
SE and SE say it's O2. In short, the phone looks nice, is light and
stylish but a pain in the butt to use and I seriously wish I'd stuck

I am extreamly sorry to say this. This phone is worst. Even though it's
a VGA camera, not good as nokia. Nokia's VGA camera is really good compared
to this. Very very poor picture quality. It didn't look like 65,536
color screen. Poor display (Pixelated). Mp4 is also not good in this
screen. Even though it is stereo speakers it is not loud enough. Only
good thing is the mp3 quality is better like Sony Ericsson K750i (Only
if you hear it through handsfree). Always hangs. The only sollution
is to remove the battery when it get's hang. Don't keep the phone memory
full. Otherwise you will be wasting a lot of time. because it's very
slow while the memory is full. M2 memory card is very costly. 512MB
is Rs. 3000 Rupees in Sony World in Coimbatore(India).I recomend to
go to Sony ericsson W550i for good music or Sony ericsson K750i for
good camera or Nokia 6681 for good smartphones.

just as good. It hasn't got a radio (but I didn't use that anyway) and
the camera isn't as good (and I didn't use that either). The only thing
that I would say is that it needs a different style memory card, I had
a 1GB memory card duo for the W800i but I can't use it in this phone
as this requires the memory card micro. So I've got to get a memory

Well have had this phone for abt a month and a half and simply speaking,
this phone rocks. First let me write about the pros: 1) expandable memory:
I dont think any phone is worth the money if its memory cant be increased.
This phone clearly emerges the winner coz it might just be the cheapest
phone with expandable memory. So u can store all ur fav hits n listen
to them on the go. 2) mp3 player: the mp3 player ROCKS. the stereo sound
quality is brilliant. And with expandable memory, it easily replaces
ur iPod. (Not in case of the snobs who will still carry theirs') Also
with the flap closed one can use the two specially designed external
buttons to control the media player!!! 3) Camera: Although a VGA, it
is still handy can can give u pretty neat pics. 4) Looks: A radical
looking keypad which although looks difficult to work with, is actually
pretty good. you just need to get used to it. the keys especially give
a nice feel when pressed. 5) Price: Yes it is one of cheapest phones
around with similar features. Now the cons: 1) No FM: But with expandable
memory, who needs one!!! 2) Low message memory: this is a disappointment
as it can store only about 130 sms messages. 3) Display: Poor as it
is not a TFT. but i can live that. Overall this phone really is a scorcher.
I dont know why people have given it such bad ratings. But i feel SE
phones, many a times are underrated, for people dont quite know what
they want to buy and just go by what others say. But with features like
these and price so low, its the best buy.

quality of the images you have to switch on/off the ‘Night mode’

you can do is to set it to ‘Fine quality’. These little
things should bring out the full potential of the camera! The different
‘Shoot modes’ & ‘Effects’ are fun too if you’re

really good phone for a mediocre person, affordable, fashionable, style
with performance, and an expandable memory slot really give it a first
choice as far as medium range phones are concerned. only drawback is
the camera it must have a higher zoom and clarity. rest it simply the
best.

To you moaners - what are you complaining about?! Its not a Moto V3i
- because it's got better Bluetooth, battery life & signal strength.
I know, I test phones for a living. I get a PDA Bluetooth link to this
phone thru 2 Victorian thick walls 10 metres away - something only the
K800 can match. And as for the build quality - it's no different to
Samsung or LG builds. Battery life - 6 days on standby with 2.5 hours
of calls. Signal strength is a good 15% better than the V3i. Personally,
if you want to be a iPlod clone get the Moto; but the Z530i is a better
usable phone. And as you kiddies are all about looks these days I guess
I know what you're going to get.

Bluetooth and IR works well. The software didnt hung or showed any problem
for the last 2 months. The problems are have a not so good VGA camera,
no FM, no keypad security lock.

Z530i...it's a very good phone indeed which packed with almost all the
features that make ourlife easier. Read its spec and u'll know what
it has got for you. If this phone came with at least 1.3megapixel plus
has 3G, it's gonna be a very PERFECT phone! But for such price and all
the functionalities it has, don't over expected it coz S.E has tried
their best & limit to offer us such phone in its own class. Thru all
the reviews from many sites & forums tat i've survey, some ppl juz donno
how to appreciate it & too unfair on this phone! Especially for those
who r complaining that this cell dont have flash or poor screen or fragile
or poor megapixel and so on & fort.well, all i can say is,always ask
ourselves wat we want/expect and according to our budget wat can we
get!if not enough money, don't buy and complain left & right later. Yet,
read the specs, try it out before u buy and always make survey around!
if dont like it, just walk away, is that easy! And once more, Z530i
ROCK !!

I've had the phone 1½ month now, and am very satisfied. Unlike
- apparently - some of the other reviewers, I did a bit of research
before I got it, and made sure it fit my needs. I wanted a small phone,
with good battery-time, mp3 player with room for an external memory-card,
and a camera - NOT to replace my real camera, but just as a little practical
extra. ALL THIS is fulfilled in Z530i. Its small, but unlike others
I think it feels much more solid to hold then the looks would have you
believe. Battery time is a great plus - I've used the mp3 for hours
without getting near running out. Camera is not very good in my opinion,
but I am rarely impressed with mobile cameras. Screen is fine except
in direct sunlight, mp3 player is really good, with good sound - though
it doesn't play VERY loud, it satisfies me perfectly. The memory card
has gone down in price - I got 512Mb for roughly 20£ in Denmark (with
such a cheap phone I think that is quite ok). For me, the only minus
is the four-way control button. While I like the unusual numeric keypad,
the four-way control button which has the main selection button in the
middle, is a bit tricky to handle - you easily push the wrong way while
pressing the centre button. I found it annoying at first, but after
a bit of practise its ok. I would think anyone with large fingers would
be highly annoyed though! Apart from that - perfect for my needs. And
I've experienced NO freezing or stuff like that - no problems at all.
Great phone!!!

What an absolute piece of junk. I had no idea sonyericsson was into
producing toy phones cos that's what this is, a cheap plastic toy. I'm
too scared to hold this phone with a good grip in case it breaks in
my hand. It has some good features but dont think i can live with a
phone that needs extra care when handling it, i mean it's not exactly
a nokia 8800 which deserves such care.

Had a Nokia 1100, which did what I needed it to do, make calls sednand
receive texts...and that was it. So I treated myself to a new phone,
and got this little cheeky number. Loads of features, great sound, looks
great, and does loads of stuff I did not know a phone could do!! Plus
it has Bluetooth....which DOES work!! I got it for £60.00 which I thinks
is pretty good, and if I can get 2 years out of it then what a bargin!!

It keeps freezing everytime i try to play music, bluetooth doesnt work
properly, screen is too small and cant see at all during daytime, keypad
is not very easy to use and the flip mechanism doesnt feel very solid
at all i have to be extra careful not to open or close it too hard incase
i damage it. Anyway, it's gone back now and replaced it with the samsung

Had this phone for 4 days. Its is nice and compact and light. It has
all of the functions that i need. It would be nice if fm Radio was included
but you can't have it all. Just to clear something up, the camara is
VGA resolution. However, the phone has some 'clever' software which
enhances the resolution to 1.3 Mega Pix through a process called "interpolation2.
Once i downloaded a picture to my laptop i found the quality to be comparable
if not better than some other images from my other 1.3 Mega Pix camara
phones.
