Sony Ericsson Z200 review

 Review: October 2004

Last updated October 2005

Rating: 2 stars

In a nutshell: An entry-level flip phone.

Review

The Sony Ericsson Z200 is an entry-level flip phone. On the positive side, it's a nicely-crafted phone that looks good, especially when closed. It has a good choice of exchangeable covers, and an internal aerial. It has all the basic features that you might need from a phone, but that's about it. The phone is reasonably compact, but not that lightweight. The screen is pretty average, and the spec is pretty much the minimum you would expect from a mobile phone in 2005. A nice phone if you just want to make calls and text friends, but not 100% reliable, as you will see if you read the user reviews below.

This is my first mobile phone. At first, I was reluctant to buying a mobile phone, as I didn't think I would need one, but buying this has got to be the best thing I ever did. It's fast, reliable and very durable. It makes calls, sends and recieves messages and even has a built in colour screen and mini status screen on the front cover. This phone was excellent value and served me well, it has been through some tough times, but is still working and all in one piece, I have never had any problems with it at all. Superb phone.

Only had to change the battery once and the charger once in all that time. Now to find a new sony ericsson that will last the test of time of design and reliability

As well as making telephone calls, it can also sent text messages which are useful when you need to comunicate with someone that you don't really like. My sister got two of these fancy modern telephones which can do much more that needed, and moth have broken many times. Mine has never gone wrong. It's great.

Never had a single problem, even accidentally had a horse stand on it, lived through everything untill my mother managed to drown it with a leaking bottle of evian in a waterproof duffle bag. And of course now they've disappeared altogether. Anyway, reading the rest of the reviews, I got the one that did work decently..

This coming Christmas, I will have had this phone for two years. It's doing me fine... except for the reception and battery. The batter lasts me around 3 days max before I need to charge it again. The reception, sorry to say, is rubbish. It's completely stupid. Whenever there's a storm, the reception is perfect, and whenever the skies are clear, I have to walk around for 5 minutes in order to find good reception. Other than those two things, the phone isn't that bad. It does what it needs to do.

Anyways this phone is excellent! I was out snowboarding took a wicked bail x_x landed on my phone and I was like OMG! I took it out and it was fine. I bought this phone because it looks rather funky and sony ericsson i had heard were pretty reliable. However after 18 months it has completely given up. The chargewr hs broke therefore I cannot charge my phone, and when it actually does charge the battery life does not last longer than 2/3 hours, which is pretty useless when i am out and about. This phone no-longer lets me make or receive calls either I can't hear the person who has called me, or they can't hear me, so i resorted to just texting for a few months. The texting facility was at first excellent, but soon enough it has slowed down enormously and it now takes so long i just can't be bothered. Trying to find numbers in the phone book also takes a million years as its soooo slow. But in the phone's defence I have got my use out of it and used it a lot but its a little disappointing after 18 months to find it has given up. This phone is great to start with, but in my experience it soon slows down and it becomes extremely frustrating to do even the simplest of tasks. Design wise i think its excellent, but thats about all it has going for it sadly.

On first impressions this is a really great phone. It has a good, clear, colour screen, good graphics and is very easy to use. However, I have had mine for less than a year but, as seems to be the growing trend with phones of about this age, it is no longer functional. It has stopped sending and receiving texts, vibrates randomnly even when no-one is calling, I can't retrieve my voicemail messages and the buttons don't always work! Seriously people, don't buy this phone! I have a few friends with the same phone and they're all experiencing similar problems. If you want a phone that's going to last, this isn't the one for you. I'm going back to Nokia.

As an entry level phone, which is what i was after - this phone is superb. It looks good, and although it could be a little slimmer (although it is fairly slim considering its 'doubled up') it fits in my pocket well. I didnt want a camera or be able to play MP3's on (whats the point when you have an Ipod or other MP3 player which you can fit MANY more tracks on). I wanted: a fairly decent screen - which this has (i dont know what some of the bad comments mean when they say that the screen is rubbish? Its not SUPER - but its good. a decent level of quality for ring tones - which this has (although is you're into downloading tones - this phone isnt the most compatable) A flip phone that is attractive, with exchangable covers - it does the first two brilliantly, but i have only ever seen a few different covers - they are very hard to come by. The only problems that i have is that it can occasionally freeze (ive had this twice maybe) - but that is the only problem that ive had within the 18months that ive had this phone.

I would give this phone a higher rating , except it has had to go back to SonyEricson TWICE in about six months. I got it for its usability outdoors & indeed it is good for this-strap on handle at top + clockface (can use to find compass North if need to). From my experience in electronic repairs & with this unit, I would say there is a standard electrical fault (or two) apparently "in the PCB switch" . (I will see the report soon). All units made before a certain date, will likely be prone to the electronic faults described in the below consumer reviews. HAVE THESE PARTS REPLACED PRIOR TO THE END OF YOUR WARRENTY (No Charge) . If the local Sony Ericson office refuses to do this , you can do what I did (if you are in Australia) - lodge a "Help me!" online to government's consumers affairs office in your state, or go direct & lodge a written complaint to the telecommuncations industry ombudsman. The Z200 ought not to be manufactured or sold anymore unless all new batches are free of the original faults In the interests of recyling (avoiding electronic waste ending up in landfill) I will persist with this model till it packs up & there is no warrenty to cover it. Otherwise avoid this model. (Not because of its features). PS- Newer software makes the SMS etc faster. Good luck & know your consumer rights.

I got the Z200 for my birthday as my nokia got smashed! Very attractive phone (apart from that stupid handle, i spose some people use that) I most liked the phone becuase ive never seen any one else with it! So i got my mum to buy it for 129.99! Had no problems with it! A couple weeks later, I wud write a text message and the it wud freeze and then turn its self off! And then after being turned back on it would take about 5 minutes of waiting to load untill i could start writing my message all over again! This started to happen more regually even if i was searchin for a number it would just go all muddled up and then just freeze! I have a virgen Z200 and the signal is absolute rubbish! If my phone went out of signal ( which i know happens coz u cant have signal everywhere) i wouldnt have any signal for most of the day even if i knew there was a mast near me! Now 5 months later the battery doesnt last! i have charge each night! I let it go right down till its completly flat and then charge all through the night which ur supposed to do so its fully charged! and its flat by the evening! The same thing happened with my brother he liked the look off the phone so he brought himself one again for 129.99 and the same things happened to him! He also had to buy an extra 80 just to have his screen fixed! You have to be extremly because one drop on the floor and u've got a huge chip on the fone!!! Attractive fone! But useless when it comes to what a fone is meant to be used for

I've had this phone for 12 months now with vodafone and will shortly be upgrading to the K700i. to make this review more helpful i have split it up into various paragraphs below STYLING - outside, love it (except the handle, who thought of that?) very snazzy, nice colour and good choice of changeable facias. Inside however takes some getting used to, bright orange around the screen and buttons. EASE OF USE - buttons sometimes hard to use, sometimes a slight delay before it appears on the screen (especially during txting. Other than that probably the easiest phone to navigate (i didnt need instructions its so easy). The biggest problem with this phone as far as ease of use is concerned is removing the back cover (holing the battery), its way way way too fiddly, i have to use a knife! EXTRAS - not many! probably the biggest let down for this phone. theres no camera, bluetooth, the screen isn't good enough quality to recieve images from other phones. although it does have infra - red (not so much an extra as it is standard nowadays). It does also come with 3 games, all very enjoyable, mini golf (fantastic!), honey cave 2 (a futuristic shooting missions game) and Alien scum (amazing - old fashioned game in the style of space invaders. As for ringtones, they are excellent polyphonics. You can exchange with ur mates and download songs as your ringtone (polyphonic though) PRACTICALTIY - you dont get much more practical than this. its very much a no frills, does wat it should, flip phone. Very easy to use, battery lasts days and days on end (and im a very high user!) CONCLUSION - For what you pay for this now you get an excellent phone for someone who wants exactly that.........JUST A PHONE, something to do its job, but with a little bit of added style. However the lack of camera will obviously dissapoint some.

Although I've been warned about this phone I could not stop myself from buying one because of it magnificent design (five stars on that one). It is true that this phone has no bluetooth nor camera but since I do not want all those fancy functions I bought z200. But after a few days it started putting itself of. not oly the battery life is too short (1,5 days in standby!! even my first phone a1018 lasted longer in its last days!!), the phone has some problems with sending text messages; namely it sometimes failes to send the 2nd message when the message is too long. For I have been warned all about this I guess I have no one to blame. It seems I bought another fancy watch for more than one hundrend dollars. yeah, yeah, good for me :(

During my 2 yrs of study I didnt have a phone,well...apparantly,some I cant affor it but the rest is just not right for me, but I was looking for a simple phone, good dynamic and function/features, nice color without a camera or mp3s etc etc. Coz all i needed is a phone - if I want a camera i got my own digital camera & if I want a camcorder I got my own, a cd/mp3 player i got one too. Until I set eyes on Z200 I just knew it this is what I've been longing for....but now that I'm back home I couldn't use it bcoz it doesn't read the new sim-card i got.....so adding to my review can somebody give me a yell how to swith to a new number, pliz email me any solution: solo_lotoala@yahoo.com.au....good things!!!

this is a basic phone that looks good, is not too big and sits in a small handbag nicely! ok girly stuff over. The phone itself has been reliable and easy to use but the downside is that its hard to get new ringtones, and the ones it does have are not loud enough for a noisy enviroment or to be heard when tucked in a bag on the floor! Having said that I would recomend this phone for anyone who wants a compact-ish basic cheap phone that is reliable and serves its purpose

The battery last and lasts and lasts,..If you want a no frills flip then these can be picked up for next to nothing... No, it aint got a camera, but hey...I got a draw full of digital cameras, wideocams etc.. Just watch out which network you buy one locked into as some can prove tricky to unlock. I love this phone, its tri band as well so it goes around the world with me. my only nag is that its a wee bit fragile... make it like my old T39m and then i'd buy a dozen of em and treat all my buddies...

I didn't need or want a phone with all the useless bells and whistles (in-built camera, mp3 player etc) so the Z200 was the logical choice. 30 on a pay as you go contract from virgin ? im 13 years old and i bought this phone in 2004 to upgrade from the nokia 3315. most of my friends have it. its cheap for a flip phone has good features such as colour screen and games which i call them "nintendo games". the features i like are the peak window on the cover which you can see the time and if you got any messages with out opening it, i also like the colour screen, the selection of polyphonic ringtones that were supplied with the phone and the sms settings. the things i don't like about the phone is the handle, its ugly and im sure im never going to use the rope like thing to clip it to my belt of hang it around my neck ( Thats dorky). another bad thing is the screens really small, when your using infrared to get pictures from your friends phone it doesn't let me because it says the screen is to small. the screens about 4cms in height and in width. i always miss calls aswell because the loudest sound(number 4) is like number 2 on the nokia 3315. other than that the phone is a cheap flip phone and is great for someones first phone. i think... age compatible: all agers (easy to operate) you deserve better if your: 16 years and over IT NEEDS A CAMERA!!!!! get Rid OF the handle! i bought this phone for 130 dollars, i think its worth the effort to save another 60 dollars and get a BEtter phone which has a camera and is a nokia or a motorolla.

I bought this phone as an upgrape from my Panasonic G50, becasue it had a better battery life, and was a flip phone that was inexpensive. Within the first week the clock on the front had packed it in and wasn't working properly (the white bits were black and vice versa). I called up Sony Ericson and they told me that I could get a replacement if I took it back to where I bought it from. They replaced it straight away with a new one, and it works fine. The first phone was just faulty. Great phone, all my friends were jealous when I bought it as it's cool and cheap. Doesn't have camera or mp3 but that doesn't bother me as I've got my own camera and mp3 player that work much better than most other phone's cameras or mp3 players do. I'm happy with it.

There are several problems I had with it, though: (1) lack of ringtones, faceplates, etc. as phone is not popular (2) network reception is not regained automatically (3) screen was dim in the corner (4) feels flimsy AND two days ago it started locking up, turning itself off, etc. Yesterday it stopped working completely. I'm going to send it in for repairs but I'm not expecting much. Sad, really, it has so much potential.

Bought it in June from Virgin and three weeks later complained about the slow software and poor backlit keypad. I was persuaded to give it a longer appraisal and kept it for another four months. The slow software got slower as I added entries to my address book and text messages took an age to send. I've also had text message delivery problems which I've never had before and may be the fault of the Z200, I'm not absolutely sure but remain sceptical. As with some of the other reviewers when you are back in range having lost the signal it takes an age to lock on again which sometimes required a switch off and restart. By chance I reactivated my retired T68i (battery problem) and was astounded at the speed of input and retrieval of data and the lightning fast dispatch of messages. Virgin have been helpful and approachable and are supplying another phone, not a Z200 thank you very much, in exchange! I started my mobile ownership with an Excel seventeen years ago and have had a few since but the Z200 is the worst, the T68i may be the best.
