Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro Review
Phone rating:
In a nutshell: The Sony Ericsson X10 Mini Pro has everything
that the original X10 Mini has, plus a slide-out physical keyboard.
It's an ultra-compact smartphone running Google's Android OS, with a
5 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, aGPS with Google Maps,
a fast processor and support for 16GB of memory. Connectivity includes
WiFi and HSPA. But the small screen size, poor battery life and old
version of Android are a disappointment.
Review: July 2010. Last updated March 2011.
A strong contender for the mobile phone with the longest name ever,
the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro was released in the UK at the
start of July 2010. We've really been looking forward to the release
of the X10 Mini Pro, as we have a soft spot for phones with real keyboards.
So, does the Pro deliver on its promise?
The X10 Mini Pro is almost exactly the same as the Sony
Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini, except that it has a slide-out QWERTY
keyboard. This adds a little to the weight of the phone, although it's
by no means heavy. Amazingly, Sony Ericsson have managed to sneak the
keyboard into the design without compromising any of the phone's hardware,
and adding only a millimetre to its thickness. Astonishing! It's not
a perfect keyboard, with a somewhat dead feel about it, but the keys
are a good size and they're well spaced out. After an hour of use, you
get used to the feel and can type quickly.
Apart from the keyboard, it's basically the same phone as the X10 Mini,
so read our review of that
phone for more insight. We like the keyboard very much, but we dislike
the poor battery life, small screen, less than perfect reception and
general clunkiness of the software. The new Sony
Ericsson Mini Pro fixes many of these shortcomings.
Features of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro include:
- 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash
- Video camera with video light
- Display: 16 million colours, TFT touchscreen, 240 x 320 pixels with
auto-rotation
- Media player with album art, TrackID and PlayNow
- FM radio with RDS
- MP3/ AAC ringtones
- Speakerphone
- aGPS with Google Maps, geo-tagging and WisePilot Turn-by-Turn navigation
software (demo)
- Messaging: SMS, MMS, email, conversations
- 3D games
- Picture wallpaper
- Personal organiser functions
- Vibration alert
- Internet: WAP 2.0, GPRS, EDGE, HSPA, web browser, RSS feeds, YouTube
- Memory: 128MB plus microSD memory card (up to 16GB supported)
- Connectivity: WiFi, Bluetooth, micro USB, 3.5mm audio jack
- Quadband GSM (850/900/1800/1900) plus 3G UMTS/HSPA (900/1700/2100)
- Size: 90 x 52 x 17 mm
- Weight: 120g
- Talktime: 3.5 - 4 hours
- Battery standby: 300 - 360 hours

So many people are complaining about this phone, but I don't think its
that bad.
So whats good: -touchscreen is very sensitive. (which is a plus in comparison
to the Sony Vivaz.)
-it's bright and clear.
-has good apps already installed that come in handy. the -buttons are
also useful (back button, home etc and volume button)
-The internet is good.
-very easy to unlock.
-widgets are handy and customizable(?)
-sits good in your hand.
Bad: -SOME apps/games run slowly or freeze.
-Battery life isn't bad but not great either (what do you expect from
a touchscreen? takes more battery to run it, and all the stuff you have
running in the background) but batterys dont last forever. especially
when you use your phone alot and do alot of hefty stuff.
-no qwerty touchscreen.
-numbers on the qwerty pad are awkward to use when dialling numbers.
have to use touchscreen for that
-camera quality isn't great (for 5 megapixels) and the button is stiff
so the pictures come out blurry or the moments gone.
-Couldn't add music to my phone easy. and when I did figure it out it
refused to play.
-My texttone that I downloaded is very tempermental. sometimes it goes
off and sometimes it doesnt.
-the pictures it comes with arent great.
-(tbf I had quite a few messages,) but it randomly deleted them all
one day :/
-never figured out bluetooth.
Another thing, when I go looking for apps to download and download them,
it always feels like my phone isn't made for the Android Market. So
the apps run a bit slow etc.
Sounds like alot of bad things but tbf it's not a bad phone... It's
average. I feel like it's Sony's first attempt at a touchscreen and
overall it came out okay.
To those of you who complain about battery life. whether it's this phone
or other phones. Battery life doesn't last nowadays. especially when
people are constantly on their phones nonstop like alot of us are. The
battery alone is running a mini computer, practically. Your laptops
only last an hour to 3 or 4 hours. If the battery is a problem. get
a new one. they're like £5 off amazon.
If you expect an iPhone then go and buy one.

Loved this phone at the start now i HATE it! although its superfast
and great for texting , messages always seem to get muddeled up and
i could recieve a messge from weeks ago! also you dont normally recieve
most messages. The internet is pretty useless and the facebook never
seems to update itself. Also like everyone else said.. the battery life
is awful but so is most phones these days! its only because its android
this is why its so bad. My phone 'also' stopped charging a number of
times! i got it fixed the first couple of times, then the last time
i sent it away i recieved a letter saying that they refused to fix it
as this is my own fault and that i damaged the software on the inside
of the phone (immposible). I didnt even have this phone for a year and
it completley broke! thats just £120 completley wasted.. I would STRONGLY
recommened you dont buy this phone!

I've had my Xperia X10 Mini Pro since December 2010, and has work fine
for the first year. I noticed a problem beginning to occur with the
battery and charge in early 2012. I love this phone but very disappointed
with the fault in charge. I ordered a brand new battery and charge and
the small red light just seems to flash wheneverI attempt to urn it
on. I ended up contacting Sony Ericcson to complain about the fault
a few weeks ago, and i'm now waiting for my Xperia X10 Mini Pro to return.
After reading these reviews it seems this fault is a regular occurence
in this particular model of Sony Ericcson's, and i'm feeling scpetical
about the return of my beloved X10 Mini Pro. Certainly gone down in
my estimations, rather dishearted.

I've had this phone for just over a year. When I first got it, I loved,
loved, loved it. I still love the tiny size which makes fitting it into
a clutch bag or pocket really easy, and the slide out keyboard, which
makes texting or writing emails really easy. But as time as gone on,
I'm starting to have problems with it which are really putting me off.
The battery life isn't the best, and it is developing a tendency to
freeze up and crash. But my 2 biggest bugbears are 1) the alarm function
- hit snooze, and that's it, it stops going off; cue waking up 5 minutes
before I'm due to start work! 2) the message function - messages in
a stream get mangled together, so I may receive a message that is half
of the message that was actually sent, and half of a message from weeks/months
previously, or I may send a similar kind of message without knowing
it. It's happening increasingly frequently, from a one off a few weeks
ago to a daily occurance now. All in all, I'm glad this was bought outright
so I'm not tied into a contract with it. I'm now shopping for a new
phone.

I agree with Barry, I thought this was a great phone when I got it but
I absolutely despise it now, having owned it for 18 months. It is slow
and barely works as a phone; I've lost count of the number of times
it has refused to let me accept an incoming call. The messaging system
is terrible, choosing to store a random message as a draft that must
be deleted each time you need to message a contact. The alarm function
is probably the biggest joke, hit snooze and then wake up hours later
to find it hasn't gone off again. If the phone is off, the alarm function
will not wake it. It feels like SE have given up on this phone as a
lame duck, I cannot discern any difference in any of the software updates
issued. Avoid at all costs, I envy my friends with iPhones, that is
how bad it is!

Most of these fools writing these reviews weren't aware of what they
were purchasing and/or don't even know how to use the phone's features.
For me, this phone is perfect for socialising, which is the reason I
bought this phone. Bluetooth and Wifi work perfectly, at acceptable
speeds. Starts up rather slow, as with all phones, but works at a perfect
speed once it's running. The keyboard is a nice implementation, allowing
you to type quickly, and allows to slide it back in very quickly. It
has a nice build quality, I've dropped it a few times and it's still
in perfect working condition. The battery lasts for an acceptable amount
of time. I don't necessarily use my phone for calling, but I imagine
if you do very often, then you may have to keep recharging everyday.
Perfect phone for me, best one yet.

this phone is very good for its size. it is very good if you're the
sort of person who pulls their phone out every few minutes to text message
their friends, or check their facebook. Although the amazingly bad battery
life does affect this, it will last a day with a good charge. I'd had
this phone for about 10 months, and it is getting to be a bit of a pain,
I wouldn't advise getting this phone now, as you may love it at first
for the first few months, the months after that its loveliness will
deteriorate and you will become sick of it. But basic usage & turning
the networking off, will make battery life somewhat satisfactory. For
this market, the phone is a solid 3 stars. good: Camera, Keyboard, Responsiveness.
bad: sluggish (after at least 6 months), out of date software, UN-removable
external apps, small screen, battery life.

I got this phone as an Android replacement for an ageing Nokia Nseries.
The build quality is better than many of the "junky" phones (Huawei,
HTC, etc) but is not as good as the Nokia, although it was much cheaper.
First thing I noticed was the short battery life, and had to install
apps to manage the CPU and battery. Now it works for a full day even
using WI-FI and internet. BUT to get the most from Android phones requires
quite a bit of technical knowledge as to how the operating system works.
My biggest gripe with this phone is the lack of zoom on the camera which
means buying extra software. Otherwise the picture quality is superb.
I would definitely recommend this phone to a friend as a "budget" quality
Android phone.

intuitive operating system. Only lasted couple of days as it got very

it. My 4th faulty so called smartphone,so I show no mercy now! The others
were 2 htc's & 1 blackberry bold. Plodding along with ancient mobile

You have to question quality control when phones costing under £50 appear

keyboard has left me wondering how I lived without it for 18 months...apps
not so great but that's an android issue, not the phone...tinkering
with the camera settings makes this a brilliant little snapper too.
Browsing the web is a disappointment, and the whole android interface
is limited by the screen size and the Sony overlay on android which
isn't as good as a friends htc. Battery life is truly appalling, and
I say this as an iPhone user! But for £100 I really don't feel like

its been one month and 2 weeks since i've bought the phone and i thought
i'd update my thoughts on the phone. battery life has improved, but
mine still only lasts a day because im constantly using it, seriosuly,
i don/t ever leave it alone, if im not playing games then i'm fiddling
with other applications, so even though i'm hammering the life out if
it, i still have about 20%-25% battery left which i think is good. i
know if i cut back on playing games and stuff, it would last longer,
but i dont mind charging it because it charges like lightning. the battery
doesnt drop to 80% anymore, it's running pefectly now. for some reason,
the flash doesnt work on the camera all the time, im thinking it may
be because of the light sensors, like it flashes when it's dark enough.
the camera button is now easier to press though, because i've been taking
pictures. picture quality is good but not filled with enough colour
(as opposed to my older Sony Ericsson phone) the problem i have with
it though is that it drops signal in certain areas. like at my uni,
there's a cafeteria and it loses signal everytime i go there. so for
me, that's a real disappointment, i want to be able to rely on my phone
to always have a signal. my older sony ericcson never dropped signal,
and they're both on O2. so for that it's 4 stars still. but it's still
a really good phone, i love it.

Excellent compact credit card size and definitely better than the Xperia

with too many apps that run in the background and surf or retrieve data
too much. Battery performance improves after a few rounds of charging.
I like the form factor and the voice clarity and sound quality. Very
dependable overall performance and no problems with reception even in
when in an elevator. About the only negative is that there is no quick
and straightforward way to group contacts to send out text messages
to different people at the same time. Even though the built-in camera
has no zoom, the image quality is actually very good. Would have liked
a good photo editing app included. Very satisfied with this phone.

i've had this phone for 12 days now and i think it's great(at the moment).
The user interface is slick and doesn't lag, it's so smooth and better
than some of the other touchscreen phones i've tried. it registers every
touch, and i never have to click anything more than once, it does exactly
what i want. even though the processor is only 600mHz, it's still fast
and manages to keep up with all the applications. My battery life isn't
great even though i have the screen brightness at its lowest, i only
use wifi for about one hour each day, it's never running in the background,
i switch everything off, and my battery still only lasts a day. okay,
i admit i do play games on my mobile probably more than the average
person and this does drain my battery. it's strange though that i had
charged my phone to full 100% and within 20 minutes of sending and receiving
some texts, it went down to 80%, sending and receiving text messages
seems to drain the battery. Anyway, the phones looks great and it feels
great, it fits perfectly within your hand and it's quite weighty and
has a great slide out keyboard, which is easy to type with and feels
so professional. thank god they gave that with it because i find it
really difficult to type on the onscreen keyboard even though i have
very thin fingers. the music player rocks, it's really loud and the
quality is very good, i didn't think such a small phone would produce
such good sound quality. for me the camera is lacking because there
isn't a lot of features unfortunately, like i would have liked to be
able to change the light balance and to be able to use flash in the
other camera modes, for some reason it only works in auto mode. also,
the camera quality is too dark in my opinion, i would have preferred
brighter, crisper pictures, but the macro mode is amazing because the
amount of detail captured is excellent. it's also hard to press the
camera button, it's too hard to press and you end up shaking the phone
and co ming out blurry-need to practice getting used to it. another
thing is that some of the games i play seem to lag and does not always
register my touch, i dunno if that's the games fault or the x10 mini
pro. it runs on android 2.1 and i have found no problem in finding applications
for it, so far every app i've downloaded have worked. The vibration
of the phone is too low though, and i can't ever feel the vibration.
the internet was surprising, i thought i wouldn't be able to read the
text and that it would be too small, but that's not the case, i can
read the text perfectly and the internet pages loads really fast, yes
you do have to do a bit of scrolling since it is a pretty small screen,
but that's okay with me. anyways, it's a really cool phone, and i recommend
it to those who want a small smartphone. by the way, it charges like
its been hit by lightning because it takes about 1 and a half to 2 hours
to reach full charge (depending whether its switched on or off while
charging). i just think it's a cool phone and it looks good, lots of
people compliment it. it gets 4 stars!! i would have given it a 5 if
it had better battery life and more camera settings

overall this is an excellent phone, however mine does has its issues,
after downloading the game angry birds it started to become slow and
glitchy especially when typing texts. Also another fault in the phone
is when phoning someone you can mute the call or even hang up when putting
the phone to your face since its touch screen, but this can be avoided
by locking the phone after dialling the number. battery life is not
a problem for me, always lasts at least 24 hours even when listening
to constant music and regularly using facebook and texting, I normally
charge my phone every night so it is ready in the morning. although
I rarely use the camera I have found when I do use it it takes great
quality photos, a for those of you who regularly upload photos to facebook
you'll be happy to hear to takes only seconds to upload your photos.
but I have to say, the best feature of this phone is it's slide out
keyboard which makes texting so much easier and faster, however i was
gifted with nimble fingers, for the bigger people among you i would
say get the original mini were the keyboard isn't included. I would
highly recommend this phone to everyone! (as long as your fingers aren't
to fat so when you go to press a key you just press one and not 5.)
it is possible that this is the best phone I have ever had now that
I am used to it.

Firstly, I love this phone and highly recommend it, I know it has some
bad points as most people have been saying below, but a lot of these
can be fixed. Amanda Grobler, RE: the messaging. There's not meant to
be an inbox, outbox or draft. It's all handled in one constant stream,
showing a list of the conversation you had with that person. If you
start to type a message but back up out of that screen, it will save
that message as a draft. If you send a message but there is insufficient
signal, it will say "message queued for sending", which is essentially
what an outbox does. Having the whole conversation in one stream means
you can view the text that was sent to you, and all others with that
person, as you write your response which is hugely useful. The only
problem with messaging that I haven't found a way around is that there
is no way to save photo messages you are sent to an SD or to transfer
them to a PC, not great if your significant other sends you a saucy
pic :P The battery life is not amazing. To lengthen it, reduce screen
brightness/timeout, ensure wifi is off when you're not using it and
data traffic if you don't care for facebook updates, and if an app or
game crashes on you, it may continue to run in the background, simply
go to application settings, select that app and press "force stop".
I charge every night, just like everyone does, and it always lasts the
whole day, what more do I need? Not all apps work with this phone because
of the screen resolution, but there are always several apps that do
the same thing, try different ones. Angry birds and angry birds seasons
has also been released for free android download and works fine for
me. Oh, a tip for free games on this phone: turn off data transfer (ie.
the internet) this means the phone cannot load advertising banners into
the games, which should stop lagging. Oh and Amanda again, download
Picasa for free photo editing. This phone is great for a casual user
who wants a phone that does pretty much everything, I even use it as
a guitar tuner. I wouldn't recommend it for business though, if that's
what you need, get an ugly old blackberry.

I am now about to take my second handset of this phone back to vodafone.
I am currently using my second xperia which is a week old and has already
given up on life. The one I had previously for three months, I say three
but really it was two as the third it spent in and out of the vodafone
repair centre each time coming back with them not finding a fault. After
fiddling around trying to get used to the ridiculously difficult to
understand phone for a couple of weeks it started switching off on a
regular basis when I closed it, locking the screen so I couldn't answer
calls and the battery lasting substantially less time with every charge,
anyone who has one of these phones will know that it having a slide
out keyboard means that if it switches off when you close it, it was
switching off A LOT. Also the only way that I know to answer a call
is using the slider on the touch screen and if the touch screen locks,
well that just makes things a little tricky. And another issue, the
charming phone hoarded up all the messages I sent and was sent over
the period of a few days and then sent and received all of them in one
go, leaving me and a few other people a little confused when getting
messages like "where are you" when you are sat with the person who you
just received that message from. Like I said I am now on my second phone
and I now have a whole host of other problems. It keeps switching to
flight mode so I cannot receive calls or messages or send them, it has
cut out a few times and wont turn back on (this is not related to charge
as it eventually responds) and it has wiped all its memory clean twice,
which is a pain as I have lost all my messages from the last week and
lost a couple of numbers. This phone has been nothing but trouble for
me and I have spent more time in the vodafone shop than I care to remember.

I am fully open to the chance theres an extraordinary large batch of
mini pros with faulty batteries, but fortunately I have one of the amazing
ones. My battery uses 30-40% per days use which includes 45 minutes
of 10 second delay GPS tracking for cycling. 1 hour 30 minutes of max
volume music, 30 minutes of calls and about 50 texts and I have GPS
and autosync on at all times. I have backgrounds apps including ebay,
gmail, cardiotrainer, antivirus, battery watcher and 6 hour weather
updates always enabled too. On top of this it can give me a days use
from 30-40 minutes charge if I forget to do it voernight, probably due
to the small battery. Maybe these other guys are running wifi, bluetooth
and some CPU hogging apps and no taskiller but I doubt that would make
such a difference compared to how intensively mine is setup, I'm still
leaning towards bad batches. So it does seem like a luck of the draw,
if you get a good battery you have a heck of an amazing phone if Android
fits your needs (I have to laugh at the mini pro being used as a business
tool), but a bad battery means your pretty much screwed.

I decided I wanted the smallest qwerty keyboard phone on the market
- and this phone is exactly that. I made an assumtion that a company
the size and status of Sony would be switched on enought to write quality
software for integration with Microsoft Outlook. BIG MISTAKE - its hopeless
- and worse, the Sony moderators solutions to synchronisation are woeful
- IE its a duplication process - not a synch. To backup and restore
- you must use internet back facility - you cannot made local backups
- bizarre! However, there is a free 3rd party solution that resolves
the issue - but that does not absolve Sony from being naive about who
would use this phone. In summary - it's a beautiful, well designed and
engineered phone in the physical sense - but the common apps built in
are woeful. Basics like Contacts, Appointments, Notes etc bear no realtion
to the data held in Outlook. Whereas Nokia makw the effort to integrate
- Sony are in a world elsewhere. As for the back/restore - don't get
it! At the end of this (long) 18 months - its back to Nokia for me -
their software is top class - and you cannot separate the phones from
the quality of the desktop app that supports it.

Had the phone for a week and it's being replaced today. Charged at 11am
and dead by 11pm, without a single thing happening just phone idle (46%)
and cell standby (42%), so sent it back, as that's an obvious fault
so if you are having that problem, get it replaced. As for the phone,
it's nice to use, the need for a keyboard is obvious, glad I didn't
get the mini now, as input with the on screen alpha numeric is very
slow and tiresome when you want to type something not recognised as
first choice (or recognised at all) by the predictive text, it's nowhere
near as easy as using a seperate 'old fashined' alpha numeric keypad.
If your a first time Android user getting around and working out how
things work takes some time, and having used SE for about 6 years now,
I much prefer their interface and working system on their non smart
phones than this, things just worked better and more logically, like
default numbers in the contacts, you don't get that. Perhaps I'm just
out of my comfort zone, but I prefer to not have to spend ages trying
to find an app that does what I want it to do, bwhn before I could just
pick it up select an option from a menu and it was done. Made a few
phone calls on it, nice and clear, speaker is good, and it connected
to my bluetooth handsfree in the car no problem at all. Doesn't have
voice dialling which is a definite downside for me, and it doesn't sync
with outlook on your desktop, which is a massive negative for me. You
have to download a couple of apps for it, and the one recommended by
SE is an alpha release that doesn't work very well!!! You can sync with
the cloud and SE's servers and googlemail (again SE recommends that
you sync your outlook with the googlemail and then with phone....errr
no) and everything you want, but not if you just want to sync with the
outlook on your desktop or laptop. I notice that nearly all other manufacturers
have addressed this and built in the functionality, but SE support can't
be arsed on this one. Camera is alright. basic 5mp camera phone, can
take a few decent shots when your out and about on the spur, but if
you want proper display photos then look elsewhere. I'll come back and
review again when I have the new one to update on battery life, but
for now it's two stars, it does what a phone does pretty well, but the
lack of outlook sync and voice dialling lets it down.

This is quite a nice little phone. The interface is very smooth and
user-friendly, and it even has a guide built into it if you get stuck
with any issues. I absolutely love it. The screen, although small, is
crisp and responds well to the touch, and there are several widgets
to try out. Are most of them useful? Probably not... some of them are
more or less "shortcuts". As I said, I love the phone. Well, most of
it. What I don't like: The keyboard sometimes catches a little on the
phone when you slide it out, and, on my phone at least, the Space Bar
hardly works at all. It's also frozen on me a couple of times, and to
relieve this problem I've had to take out and put back in the battery.
Finally, the battery life itself is not brilliant. In three days I've
had to charge the phone up FOUR times. I admit that I used the WIFI
for about 20 minutes a day, but come on... other than that I only used
for occasional texting and even more occasional calling. Tesco agreed
that the battery shouldn't need to be recharged as much as it does,
that the space bar does definitely need to be fixed, and the freezing
issues shouldn't be there. They said I could return it and either get
a replacement or a refund. I'll probably go for the refund and wait
for the price to drop as the phone ages.

Battery life isn't the best around, but if used the way I intended to
use it, then it's not a problem! Killing background Apps, dimming display,
turning off WiFi when not needed, etc, all help to preserve Battery

life saver! The one thing that annoys me... Why use a non-standard form
of mini-USB connector on the phone? I have a number of leads with the
standard mini-USB plug, and could have used them at different locations
to avoid having to sometimes take the charger with me!!!! My Advice?....
Buy one, or at least Try one!

FABULOUS!! jus updated my x10 mini pro and now i have firmware 2.0...
cant remember the last time it froze.. only takes quite some time to
switch on due to the firmware update.. but no other problems. Touch
Screen - excellent (sometimes freezes but rarely on upgrade) Buttons
- very useful Battry - music upto 10hrs/talktime 4hrs.. texting around
3hrs (constant texting) Really this phone is the best so far, its small
yet has everything. Why walk around with a brick in your bag when you
can have a x10 mini which fits in your pocket? U CAN DO ALMOST ANYTHING
ON THIS PHONE THAT YOU CAN DO ON X10!!

The handset is very good as i wanted a small phone. The android software
is a real bore and basic use is poor, going back to my windows phone

had this phone a while now and havent encountered any problems, updated
to android 2.1 as soon as i got the handset and it works brilliantly,
battery life is ok once you download advanced task killer, no reception
issues, if anything reception is better than previous phones. not sure
why people write a review on a dodgy handset, EVERY model of phone has
its bad batches! i know plenty of people who have had to take their
iphone's and blackberrys back due to problems..does that make it a bad
phone?? use a perfect working phone before passing judgement, if you
find this phone difficult to use then maybe your better off buying and
old nokia 3110
