Sony Ericsson W810i Review
Phone rating:
In a nutshell: Arguably the best of the Walkman phones, the
W810i has everything you need in a music player phone: Sony's award-winning
Walkman music player with enough memory to store 20 full-length audio
CD's, a built-in FM radio, and a 2 megapixel camera with autofocus.
In our opinion this is a phone that cannot be faulted.
Review: May 2006. Last updated October 2008.
Launched in April 2006, The Sony Ericsson W810i is the upgraded version
of the highly acclaimed and massively popular Sony
Ericsson W800i, the first Walkman branded mobile phone.
There are a few physical differences between the W810i and the W800i:
the W810i is slightly thinner, has raised keys instead of embedded keys,
and has a 5-way navigation button instead of the W800i's slightly awkward
joystick. Apart from this external makeover, the differences between
the W810i and the W800i are minor. The W810i has the advantage of EDGE
(for faster internet access) an is quadband instead of triband. It also
has Fast Port - a system connector that enables faster data transfer
from phone to PC and PC to phone, and which also serves as a charging
port.
The W810i is designed to be an outstanding music player phone, and
it succeeds. The media player supports both MP3 and AAC formats and
audio quality is superb. Mega Bass enhances bass frequencies for
a better overall music experience. There's loads of memory for storing
music, as the W810i comes bundled with a 512 Mbyte Memory Stick PRO
Duo - enough to store up to 20 full-length audio CD's. The memory
stick is expandable to 1 Gbyte. Software for ripping CD's is supplied.
In addition to the MP3 player there's an FM radio with RDS. A quality
headset is included in the sales package, and the W810i can also be
connected to an external speaker system via an optional cable.
On the imaging side, the W810i has the same 2-megapixel camera as the
W800i. This features autofocus, for sharper images, a 4x digital zoom,
camera light and a video recorder. It's one of the best camera phones
available, and has an outstanding screen to accompany it.
Connectivity is excellent too, with support for all types of external
connections: Bluetooth, USB, Infra-red, Fast port plus fast internet
connectivity using EDGE.
The W810i is a phone that cannot be faulted. It was one of the best
phones of 2006 and is still one of the best in 2008. The W810i finally
became unavailable towards the end of 2008. For a possible replacement,
consider the Sony Ericsson W705.
Features of the Sony Ericsson W810i include:
- 2 megapixel camera with autofocus, 4x digital zoom & photo light
- Video camera & sound recorder
- Display: 262k colours, 176 x 220 pixels
- Music player
- Mega Bass
- FM radio RDS
- 40-voice polyphonic ringtones / MP3 & AAC ringtones
- Polyphonic melody composer (MusicDJ)

- Messaging: SMS (with predictive text), EMS, MMS,
Instant messaging, email
- 3D Java games (embedded & downloadable)
- Animated wallpaper
- Picture editor and effects
- Personal organiser functions
- Picture phonebook
- QuickShare
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB, Infra-red, Fast port
- WAP 2.0, GPRS, EDGE
- Memory: 20 Mbytes plus 512 Mbyte Memory Stick PRO Duo
- Quadband
- Vibration alert
- Size: 100 x 46 x 19.5 mm
- Weight: 99g
- Talktime: 8 hours
- Battery standby: 350 hours

I bought the 810 based on all the reviews, and I like a lot of things
about it, but I have to say that I have complaints and don't think I'll
buy Sony again. #1: The charging- I/O port. It's a fail and I'm constantly
having problems with things that connect to it. Most of all, the chargers
don't work. I buy various ones, Sony and aftermarket and only one or
two actually work. I bought the speakers (great!) for this, but now
they won't stay connected. Headphones require carrying around the adapter.
#2 Charging weirdness. Apart from the actual port problems, if the battery
gets low, watch out. It turns into a nightmare sometimes and you're
lucky to recover the phone. #3 Walkman player dominates. It comes on
too easy and starts playing whenever. I tried to erase all songs and
disable the dedicated button but it still accidently plays some stupid
intro theme that I can't erase. I like the music feature, but really,
I bought the phone for it's reliability and the camera. #4. The ear
speaker broke after 12 months. Not happy about that, but I understand
these things happen. At least it can be fixed. The I/O port is not something
you can really correct. All that said, I like the photos and it's a
strong phone. But due to the port design, I'm going with something that
has a USB I/O next time.

this phone is.I owned a K750i for six months and rediscovered how cool
it can be owning a 007 style piece of technology(But without a magnet
to open the zip on a ladies dress) This W810i with its Superb looks, superb
mp-3 player,2mega camera, loads of extras and all the usual boring stuff
like clear call quality are all exceptional and continues sony's dominence
even further. You will do youself a diservice by not changing to this
phone.I would imagine the only drawback for people would be the lack
of colour options available, which most other companies tend to do these
days.If you own a W800i, not much has changed but the new button configuration
is daring as it is functional and certainly will not disappoint.Forget
the rest and get this. You want it!!

I have just upgraded on T-Mobile from a RAZR. What an awful phone that
was and I'm never going back to Motorola, despite loving the look of
the new SLVR. Let's be honest, making phones is not hard. It is all
about common sense. For example; my local pub is called The Doghouse.
The word 'Doghouse' was not in the RAZR dictionary and it could NOT
be added. Thus, every time I texted my mates about meeting up, i had
to spell it out. Previous to the RAZR I had a K700i and it was perfect
appart from the small 'nipple' / joystick breaking after a while. However,
you COULD add words to the dictionary and it all worked fine!!! Now
they have replaced the joystick with a little "up, down, left, right"
pad. Much better. The Walkman aspect of this phone is totally pointless,
but the memory stick it comes with is huge (512) and will mean you can
have your fav. songs as ringtones. It is also a doddle to sync with
your computer, allowing easy addition of the contacts that otherwise
you'd have to spend years typing in. A great phone.

I bought this fone yesterday. And dis fone had banished all my concerns
about. IT ROCKS 4EVER!!! getting a first SE fone. the fone is ABSOLUTELY
FINE and it is the TOPPEST Quality fones around at the moment. it was
black instead of a clumsy mixture of white and orange of W800i, which
i preferred the black obviously. but i hv 2 say that it would take me
a while to get used to the bar shape instead of the slide and flip because
i would have 2 lock it every single time. the camera is fab if not brilliant(same
thing?)because of the cover-less lens. the walkman feature is a distinguishing
pulling feature of this fone. I could h gone 4 the sasmsung D600 but
i was more interested in the music feature of the fone. Reliable fone,
18 month contract on ORANGE FAB FAB FAB and one more time FAB fone.
p.s the radio is superb and the creaking was only for a day, it took
no time to trim the rubber thats surrounding the D-pad....

This rocks! A Walkman, a video player, a phone, a camera, a torch, an
organiser, GPRS, Screensavers and animated(ish) menus, up to 2Gb storage
(2000 music tracks). And Java! Put all of that together and you get
a Sony Walkman W810i. It takes the best parts of what Sony know and
puts it into a package that you can speak to your mates on. The camera
has a light (not a flash - take note budding pro's), special effects,
panoramic view (3 pictures stitched together), zoom, auto-focus, up
to 2Gb storage which equates to 1000's of pictures or lots of video
minutes, burst mode (15 pictures in v quick succesion), macro (for those
butterflies!), self timer, white balance adjust, date and time stamping.
As you can see this is what most digi-cams can do. But this is your
phone! Walkman features are....Walkman. What Sony do. Walkmans. I could
go on, but I won't. All I'll say is - Forget your N70. Get this Sony
Walkman W810i. You'd be as mad as a March hare not too! PS: I have no
relationship to Sony or any of it's partners. PPS: Sony, if you're looking
for salesman sometime soon....

card which can fit a load of songs, videos and pictures. However there
a few drawbacks...battery life seems to drain out after listening to
the walkman on full volume. The navigation key is seriously annoying

with its 2MP camera and auto focus with it, who knew you could fit so
much features on to a pocket sized, handy, business, mp3 player of a
phone. The package doesnt scam people either, saying that its an mp3
player and give you a crappy memory card so you can fit 3 songs on to
it, no this package goes overboard for the customers and supplies an
512 mb memory card. This phone is extremely easy to get used to aswell,

player just tops the phone. I have read many reviews on this phone and
I do not find the button in the middle a problem. I previously owned
a sony ericsson k500i and the joystick broke within a few months. But
this phone does not have the same joystick. It uses different buttons
as arrows. The middle button is basically select and even then its possible

i think W810i is an extremely good phone. i loved the themes especially
the black one. i had W800i before and the functions are genrally the
same except that the speaker for W810i is much better. i can blast songs
at the highest volume without any static. the contacts list is also
much better. instead of the previously single letter search, W810i can
now key in the full name that i want to search for. the camera is great!
i can sit in a car and take pictures and even though the ride is bumpy,
the picture comes out so clearly. however, i didnt really like the key
pad. i preferred W800i's joystick as it was much easier to navigate.
W810i directional buttons is creaky. haha...the calender can't store
birthdays too. =( one more thing that i didn't like is that the camera
doesn't have a cover over it. this causes the dust to get in easily.
but i really really love this phone and i love it that it comes in black
with a little orange cuz it makes the phone look so cool. =D

to navigate my way around the menus and phone set up really easily.
Downloaded some tunes to the MP3 player and would say the sound quality
is good. Camera is much better than the d500. The only downside I have
found so far is - it will definitely need a case, so have ordered a
clear plastic one for it, otherwise I can see it getting seriously scratched
whcih wouldn't be good as it really is a sexy looking phone and its
a shame they have decided to do away with the lense cover for the camera

As I am moving on from an ancient (and beloved) Sony CMD-Z5 so I guess
any modern phone would knock me over but I do like this phone a lot.
Actually why these things are still called phones I don't know; this
is a miniature computer. Found loading music from CDs easy; sound from
Radio and player quite acceptable. Downloaded from SE site a simple
ringtone (Office Phone) that just sounds like a phone! and a theme (orbital)
that i prefer to the ones installed. The calendar is useable if your
life is not too complicated and may end up replacing my handspring organiser.
I do not seem to be having any problems with battery life although early
days yet. Camera seems fine as well. Problems -In the middle of a downloading
and setting up session it did lock up; key lights on but no one at home.
Did what I would do with a computer- pulled the power (battery) out
and all was OK; slightly worrying though. My old Sony could turn itself
off every evening and I cannot seem to do this - the manual could be
more comprehensive eg does not tell you how to lock the keys; fairly
essential with its exposed key pad. Wondering if it needs a case think
I will get one of those solid clear plastic ones everything (screen
lens keyboard)seems a bit vulnerable. Mostly just love it though. Richard

I got this phone a couple weeks ago and there isn't a thing about it
I can fault and as far as I'm concerned its the best phone out right
now. As for people saying the camera light flashes on and off - I have
also noticed this but it only happens when the battery is low to save
power and it comes on the second you take a photo so it isn't a problem
even in a pitch black room. And as for the crackly sound - I have come
accross this once - It only happens if its a sound say from a video
and there's is a wide array of noises all going on at the same time
and all needs be done is to turn the volume down by a bar or so and
it is very nearly the same volume and the distortion disappears. Getting
that crackly sound is a bit of a challenge really and I'm always playing
music with alot of bass through the speakers with mates and we have
no problems whatsoever as the sound quality on these phones is SUPERB
and can go to a decent volume 'with no distortion' at all. Also the
picture zoom on this phone is amazing and totally beats the brakes off
d600's and all them. Say if you had to run and catch a train and you
saw an interesting headline on a newspaper you desperately wanted to
read you could simply take a quick shot of the page and read it later
on the train by zooming in and in perfect quality. Zoom so good you
could zoom right in on an individual letter and have it fill the screen
with only slight blur. The gist of it is this phone RULES and the great
programs like video dj and a kick ass MP3 player the fun never ends.
You WILL NOT be disappointed - Get it! (People ought to stop giving
phones poor ratings on the count of them getting a faulty handset or
dropping them because they're thick)

Generally very happy good bits - music - playlists - camera - looks
- use - pics, video, games, alarms,..... - oh it works as a phone too!
but here are my gripes. These are mainly points that bother me after
my Nokia 6230 (Sony ericson, listen up for your next version ;-) And
i havnt read the manual, and i have only had for a week. - Listening
to the radio/walkman it should ring in your headphones when you get
a call/message. keep missing them. - voice dialing, just doesnt work,
(for me?), never had an issue with the nok, but just havnt managed to
dial by voice with SE. - The volume and button on the otherside means
that I always press them both when i want to press one. - The music
transfer software, i couldnt get to work. - why do i have to have a
button mapped to 'live!' and not be able to change it.(vodofone only?)
- I turn off the radio, it crackles in the headphones - I cant change
the chanels to my presets with the button on the headset. probably not
so much of an issue with the rds but every day on the train i get to
a place on my journey between signals, and end up not being able to
listen to the radio without opening up the radio and doing it all manually.
- when i lose stereo signal, it goes to silent rather than mono. (would
probably be an option) - I had the flashing light thing when using the
torch, made it unuseable to find things in the dark,(other than other
ravers) - clicky buttons - I think that there must be something wrong
with mine, coz it keeps hanging me up after a minute or two? and with
no signal type loss. - the in ear headphone things means that you can
hear yourself 'wierdly'... try eating toast while listening to music.
- battery life supposed to be better, but at the moment i still dare
not go anywhere without the charger, and im sure that it got flat after
an hour of talking, (not 480 minutes for sure), perhaps its because
the mp3 flattens more than you think. - cant delete the trial versions
of games. - Cant sync to lotus notes, the nokia did very nicely. and
now i just dont use it for all my alarms and things which is a shame.
but it is fab

great and the memory is very good. I had the Samsung D500 and hated
it, so was very choosy when it came to picking another handset. This
by far the best handset ive ever used. Five stars? This should be in
a league of its own.

This phone is incredible - and I've owned it for a month now. I previously
had the W800i and the W900i (much overrated phone), but I have to say
this is the best phone I have ever had. The screen is far improved from
the W800i. The specs are the same, but the W810i has a built-in 3D graphics
accelerator, which explains the difference in the screen quality. Removing
the unreliable joystick was also the best thing SE ever did - it is
much easier to navigate your way around and use the Walkman feature.
The themes are also improved and much cooler - especially the Orbit
theme. However, to all those poor people on Vodafone, you probably don't
have these groovy new themes as I've heard that they disable them and
replace them with their own - which is totally out of order, in my opinion.
My phone is completely SIM-free, luckily. The only fault I have found
is the now well-known camera flash fault, although SE will no doubt
fix this in time with a firmware update. But it doesn't both er me too
much, I don't take many photos in the dark... And to answer Smithy,
who wanted to know if you can use the radio on loudspeaker - yes you
can, but only if you've got the headphones plugged in because they act
as the antennae. However, expect this to decrease the battery life significantly.
All in all, this phone is fantastic and well-worth it. Definitely the
best phone I've ever owned - and I've owned a lot! And I can't say I've
noticed a difference in the quality of the headphones either - the only
difference is the colour, which they changed to match the much-improved
satin black colour of the handset. Anyone thinking of buying this phone
- do not hesitate! I'd recommend it to anyone.

Having owned the W800i I must say that this phone has improved perfection!
It's in a fantastic black with orange colour (so much better than the
cream and orange colour of the W800i)! The camera is excellent (shame
they've removed the lens cover) and the music player is excellent. The
headphones are not as good to look at as the W800i but the sound quality
is just as good. Call quality is excellent and I find it just as easy
to use as any Nokia. Brilliant!

I don't actually have this phone, but I am going to get it. I've been
reading the reviews and I think that one of the reasons the light flashes
while using it could be because of the auto focus on the camera, or
could be red eye reduction, as most digital cameras have this function.

Generally the phone is excellent. However, I am posting this comment
because many people above are saying the sound quality is excellent
and even perfect. After recently buying the W810i, this is certainly
not my experience and I'm not alone. The sound quality suffers from
hiss and digital artifacts / distortion. This is particularly noticeable
at non-loud volumes or for quieter music, including at the end of most
tracks, to the point tat it dominates and ruins the music. If your surprised
to hear this then join the club. It appears to be a continuation of
the problem in later firmware updates to W800i. For more details see:

OK I'm giving this an 'acceptable' rating. As everyone seems to have
agreed, the screen is pretty damn good, and the camera isn't bad at
all either. The Walkman function is really very good once you've managed
to set up your own playlists. However... my first W810i died within
9 hours of receiving it. Dead - not a sign of life. At all. Fortunately
that's not too common (why me!?!). I do find the keypad keys rather
small and close together - making me quite prone to mistakenly pressing
the wrong one. I think the setup of the menus is a bit more fiddly than
I would have hoped for, especially compared to a Nokias'. And the final
gripe - I think the build quality isn't anything like what it should
be. It has a cheap plastic case and I the main navigation button in
the centre doesn't feel like there's much to stop it breaking after
a year or so of use. Not quite the quality feel I was fully expecting
(contrast it with the Nokia N70 for example). Anyhow, I still on the
wh ole like this phone despite a few slip-ups, as it does turn heads,
and takes phones further into the future (speaking of which, where's
the 3G!? ;-P ) I would say try before you buy - compare it with the
competition!

it has the same camera , memory, mp3 player, in fact the only difference
i can see apart from looks is that the headphones of a w800i are better.
sony downgraded the headphones supplied with the w810i to save money...
they figured you dont need headphones THAT good. but i guess you do
if you buying a music phone. regardless though it is still a great phone

Having upgraded from a k750i i must say i really fail to justify the
added cost as the k750i is capable of playing mp3's etc also, ok its
from a menu and not at the touch of a button. But this is where the
810i comes into its own.. its able to sort your music into artist, track
or playlist, it also lists any videos you may have. when watching a
video your able to switch to "full screen" mode a neat little trick
for any long journeys you may be making. it comes with some great software
that basicly make it an ipod, you insert your cd, click transfer and
hey presto it compresses it nice and small and puts it on your memory
stick... invest in a few memory sticks and your music is limitless,
this phone is capable of taking a whopping 2gb stick... so... what ya
waiting for? go get this phone.... :o)

Just bought this phone on an o2 contract and im as happy with it as
i expected to be. I had a K750i and im so pleased i made the switch.
People say the phone is no different to the K750i and W800i but it is,
to begin with it looks a lot nicer and has a bigger brighter screen.
There is no difference that i can see with the camera quality which
is no problem because the W800i and K750i camera's are extremely good
for a phone. My favourite new feacture to the phone is the interactive
main menu for example one theme for the menu called Orbit has a little
shooting star that follows you as you navigate and changes colour every
time you enter the menu. The only problem i seem to have with it if
im being picky is when using the tourch it begins flashing. The screen
becomes very fingerprint covered this is a problem i unfortunately had
with the K750i aswell. The K750i and the W800i are still fantastic phones
and the W810i is just a revised version of the two. If you already have
a W800i i would probably not upgrade but if you are thinking of buying
a W800i i would consider buying the W810i.

Have had this phone just over a week on 02 upgrade and have to say its
the best phone I`ve ever owned. There IS a radio on the phone as standard
- not sure why someone has said there isn`t. The menus are a breeze
to use with shortcuts making life all the more simpler. The camera is
excellent. Standard size photo prints on glossy paper are fantastic.
Walkman is great to use - dont use the disc2phone software supplied
though as it take an age to transfer cds across. Plug in via usb or
memory card reader and drag and drop takes seconds! 2gig cards available
cheaply now so who needs ipods! As for the buttons clicking too loud
- rubbish! Small price to pay for not having the dodgy joystick that
stops working after a while due to dust. One tiny complaint - the standard
headphones supplied are very tinny in their sound reproducton and keep
falling out my ears! But has stnadard earphone socket so you can put
any headphones you wish into the phone. Overall great phone with lots
of features to suite everyone.

In simple terms this phone is the dogs! Best phone i've ever had and
i've barely owned it a week! I previously had a 3250 which was absoloute
rubbish so i go this instead and the difference is amazing. First thing
i noticed was the superb ergonomic design fit in your hand lovely and
is lovely to hold and very comfortable for those extended texting and
gaming sessions. The buttons are spaced out unlike my old K700 which
you occasionally pressed the wrong button on. They navigational key
is also better than the joystick on the K700, others mentioned a crecking
noise no such problem here maybe they press to hard or its just newness??
Next is the features the walkman is super! and the software that comes
with it is very easy to use they've kept it simple here. In addition
the 2MP camera is amazing, much better than the one on the 3250 anyway.
The display is crystal clear and call clarity is excellent. In all honest
i can't think of one problem with this phone SE have really pulled a
gem out of the bag top notch!!

the dodgy batteries and the PC software issues so decided against it.
So I looked through the SE range and decided on the W810i. And i'm so
glad i did cus this thing is simply the best phone around. It looks
great, works like a dream, is easy to use and the camera and walkman
are as good as others have said. I've had it for a week and can now
zip around menus and short cuts in seconds. I've upgraded my memory
stick (there's some dirt cheap UK retailers on eBay) so I can now fit
a more than enough tunes. The disc2phone software is very easy to use
(a little basic actually considering it won't let you edit the track
lists if the disc isn't read) and the file manager makes uploading and
downloading video, pics and sounds a doddle. Most importantly the call
clarity is excellent. If i was to be mega critical the directional key
makes an annoying creaking sound and the headphones supplied don't want
to stay in your ear unless your sat perfectly still. But at least you
can swap them for a different make if you want. Overall a great phone
