Sony Ericsson W810i review

 Review: May 2006

Last updated October 2008

Rating: 5 stars

In a nutshell: Arguably the best of the Walkman phones, the W810i has everything you need in a music player phone.

Launched in April 2006, The Sony Ericsson W810i is the upgraded version of the highly acclaimed and massively popular Sony Ericsson W800i, the first Walkman™ branded mobile phone.

There are a few physical differences between the W810i and the W800i: the W810i is slightly thinner, has raised keys instead of embedded keys, and has a 5-way navigation button instead of the W800i's slightly awkward joystick. Apart from this external makeover, the differences between the W810i and the W800i are minor. The W810i has the advantage of EDGE (for faster internet access) an is quadband instead of triband. It also has Fast Port - a system connector that enables faster data transfer from phone to PC and PC to phone, and which also serves as a charging port.

The W810i is designed to be an outstanding music player phone, and it succeeds. The media player supports both MP3 and AAC formats and audio quality is superb. Mega Bass™ enhances bass frequencies for a better overall music experience. There's loads of memory for storing music, as the W810i comes bundled with a 512 Mbyte Memory Stick PRO Duo™ - enough to store up to 20 full-length audio CD's. The memory stick is expandable to 1 Gbyte. Software for ripping CD's is supplied. In addition to the MP3 player there's an FM radio with RDS. A quality headset is included in the sales package, and the W810i can also be connected to an external speaker system via an optional cable.

On the imaging side, the W810i has the same 2-megapixel camera as the W800i. This features autofocus, for sharper images, a 4x digital zoom, camera light and a video recorder. It's one of the best camera phones available, and has an outstanding screen to accompany it.

Connectivity is excellent too, with support for all types of external connections: Bluetooth, USB, Infra-red, Fast port plus fast internet connectivity using EDGE.

The W810i is a phone that cannot be faulted. It was one of the best phones of 2006 and is still one of the best in 2008. The W810i finally became unavailable towards the end of 2008. For a possible replacement, consider the Sony Ericsson W705.

Sony Ericsson W810i features include:

  • 2 megapixel camera with autofocus, 4x digital zoom & photo light
  • Video camera & sound recorder
  • Display: 262k colours, 176 x 220 pixels

I bought the 810 based on all the reviews, and I like a lot of things about it, but I have to say that I have complaints and don't think I'll buy Sony again. #1: The charging- I/O port. It's a fail and I'm constantly having problems with things that connect to it. Most of all, the chargers don't work. I buy various ones, Sony and aftermarket and only one or two actually work. I bought the speakers (great!) for this, but now they won't stay connected. Headphones require carrying around the adapter. #2 Charging weirdness. Apart from the actual port problems, if the battery gets low, watch out. It turns into a nightmare sometimes and you're lucky to recover the phone. #3 Walkman player dominates. It comes on too easy and starts playing whenever. I tried to erase all songs and disable the dedicated button but it still accidently plays some stupid intro theme that I can't erase. I like the music feature, but really, I bought the phone for it's reliability and the camera. #4. The ear speaker broke after 12 months. Not happy about that, but I understand these things happen. At least it can be fixed. The I/O port is not something you can really correct. All that said, I like the photos and it's a strong phone. But due to the port design, I'm going with something that has a USB I/O next time.

I have used practically all the makes; but this phone is the "one." I have been tempted many a times these days by the touch phones, but this phone hasn't let me. It still carries almost 4 days battery life, after all almost 4-5 years. Music and photos are still better than Nokia on any given day. I can still manage to check internet on its little screen. So, whenever I look at this phone, I pat myself on the back thinking that it is money well spent. The phone still has some years in it I guess.

I've had this phone for over 3 years and it's never let me down. It's really handy and does everything I need from a phone. If anybody's looking for a phone to call, text, take photos and listen to music this phone does all of that really well and on top of that it won't crash and is incredibly durable. For a 3 year old phone mine still looks very new, I've never changed the battery and after 3 years it still only needs charging once a week.

The camera's picture quality is terific even if it is only 2 mega pixel, and the Walkman feature just goes to show you don't need an i-pod after all. I'm about to upgrade but to tell you the truth I'm not sure now as the phone I was looking at has had a lot of bad reviews (the vivaz) so I might just stick with what I've got... It rarely went wrong and when it did it was a simple turn it off and on again job. I would reccomend it to anyone. The battery life is great and altho it says it has expandable memory up to 1 gig it does work with 2. Really great if you love your music and pics of all ur mates. Also very easy to use and has some pasword facilities to keep nosey parents or sibling out :p

It comes free with the phone when you get it as with some other similar SEs, I have logged several hours of quadrapop since i have had the W810i and my high score is 2,300,000 which took me 2 weeks. I purchased the W810i six months ago from o2 online (refurb handset). Its was only 50 (sim free) and this was a good deal. The phone is not particuarly stylish, its white and silver and appears a little bulky (i think this is because the screen is so thick). However it is a well laid out phone. Keys are well spaced and the short cut keys are easy to use. Camera, mp3 and volume control are easily accessed from the side of the phone. Camera is quite slow but is ok for a phone. Music player is easy to use and speakers on the phone are good. However there is no separate port for headphones and the sony ericsson ones are poor. The phone seems to be very sturdy, i've dropped it many of times and it seems to survive without a scratch. The screen seems especially tough. Navigating through the menus is easy enough however the phone is a bit slow sometimes. Occasionally it seems to turn itself off. Overall a good reliable phone which does the basics well, its not an ugly phone but doesn't win any awards for style.

This is by far the best phone that i have ever owned! ive had three phones after i lost this one including the W580i and i still think this one is the best. I don't think Sony could improve at all on this model as it's the perfect phone not to complicted to use just the right size and extreamly long lasting i wish i still had this fone and i will phone dealerships still sold it i would definatly buy it again.

I had this phone since august 2007 and after a year, it gets boring. I would not recomend this to anyone looking for a new phone. I heard about the Iphone and have decieded to get that. Now i feel musch better in everyday life. This is obviosly one of the best phones around the iphone. W810i is rubbish.

Had this phone for about a year and a half. Hasn't caused much trouble other than sometimes when I try to make a call the phone switches itself off and I get a white screen... it then turns back on. Also, the camera lens does not stay clean at all - my picture quality is absolutely terrible these days! However, overall it's been a very reliable phone and is very easy to use. Currently on the prowl for a new phone...

Believe it or not this is still my favourite phone in 2008, approaching 2009! I've has a white version in this which brought from o2 not expecting much but its just great and how much it can do for a 2006 phone! The battery after 2 years is still fantastic!!! You'd expect the battery to weaken after years of ure but I listen to msic on this almost everyday and the battery goes on and on and on, it's great! I had the w800i for a year before this phone and that was fantastic but this was much better with the D-Pad and the looks. It is probabilly the most reliable and best designed phones to this day but now hearing that the newer models (e.g. W910i, K850i) are having a few technical problems I am definately going to stick to my W810i for at least another year until one that is better comes out.
