Sony Ericsson W710i review

 Review: October 2006

Rating: 4 stars

In a nutshell: Clamshell phone with 2 megapixel camera , video camera, music player, radio, memory card, Bluetooth and sports functions.

Review

The Sony Ericsson W710i is a Walkman phone in a clamshell format. It's designed for an active lifestyle, with rubber inlays to improve grip, a belt clip and a sports armband. The W710i even has a motion sensor to measure time, speed and distance when you run, and a step counter for walking. Central to the W710i are its music player functions. The music player is stereo and can support a wide range of formats including MP3 and AAC. Audio quality is high, with Mega Bass™ to enhance bass frequencies. A stereo headset is supplied, which enables the RDS FM radio to operate. Alternatively a Bluetooth stereo headset can be used.

In addition to the fitness and music applications, the W710i is very well featured. A 2 megapixel camera is included, plus all the usual features that you'd expect. Memory is very good, with a 512 Mbyte memory stick supplied. All kinds of connectivity are supported, including USB mass storage, for easy transfer of music files from a PC. Battery life is excellent.

The W710i is a highly recommended Walkman phone for anyone who will make use of its music and fitness applications.

Nice phone, but has two very serious drawbacks: 1. Rubber parts wear off quickly. 2. Despite Walkman name it is completely useless as a player because of idiotic Sony jack with plug always falling off. I wish it had a standard 3.5 mm TRS jack!

But now, 6 months has gone, and I realized that Sony Ericsson is really the bad hand phone that I have had. The feature is so good and the others. I'm so regret 'cause I sold it. And now, I don't know where to get Sony Ericsson W710i???. It is an old type (launched on 2006). No new product of this phone :((

The rubber comes off after using for 1 year, it's a nightnare, I used super-glue but won't last long, now the rubber falls into bits and pieces. They should have made it plastic, I think it will be better. Also, the charger, earphone cable don't last long, it can become loose after frequent charging and using earphone. This happens in almost on all Sony Ericssion phones.

I had the phone for 3 years and i loved it! I dropped it in the sink. Have thrown it down my stairs several times. I took it in the shower once! I dont think they intended on making it so indestructible, but i found it to be. All its features were fantastic. For the final year of its life the rubber had come off and the camera got clogged up with dust so i couldnt realy use it. But i have a new sony ericsson and its nowhere near as good. x

When it comes to phones, I've always been inclined to Sony Ericsson. I bought this cel phone a while back, and it works great. However, with time it's started giving me problems. The camera is nowhere near 2MP, the pictures come out noisy if taken in poOr lighting. It's constantly turning off by itself, and mind you I have not dropped it that much. For a "sporty" cel phone, it should withstand minor falls. And now, the one problem that pisses me off the most, it has gone completely mute. Even when silent mode is off, the phone won't ring, it only vibrates when I get an incoming call. Overall, I give it a 6 out of 10. It's a nice phone and all, but there are so much better [and cheaper] options out there. When it come to the w710, Sony Ericsson could've done a better job.

I love this phone - I've had it for 2 years now and it's great. The quality of the pictures is fantastic, as is the sound. I'm quite an active person, and I'm encouraged that it will indicate how far I've run/walked as well as the calories I've burnt - all this while listening to music or the radio! My only gripe was that the rubberised edging didn't last very long and fell off after a few months. Nevertheless, I love my phone too much to change it!

When I initially got this phone, I was very impressed. The walkman feature was brilliant, the screen was good and big and it had a really really good pedometer feature which analysed amount of steps. However, after a few months of having the phone, the headphones started to just fall out of the handset whenever it was pluged in. I therefore got a new set of headphones which I thought would solve the problem. But it didn't. So I then sent it off to sonyericsson to get repaired (and they give you freepost which is very good). About three weeks later I receive a letter from sonyericsson (that turned up fully 8 days after the date on the letter)saying that they had found moisture in my phone which means they consider it to be beyond economical repair and sso told me that if I didn't respond to the letter within 28 days they would get rid of the phone (which is pretty poor considering it turned up 8 days late!!!). So I phoned up and they told me that the moisture was fro m sweat from the phone being in my pocket. (They had detected moisture with moisture detectors which are put in the phone as it is made.) I consider this moiisture from sweat business appauling especially considering that the phone is designed to be used by runners and joggers who will naturally produce alot of sweat. I know have to pay them an extra 11.75!!! to get my phone back unrepaired. Now don't get me wrong. THE PHONE IS ABSOLUTLY GREAT; OUTSTANDING, BUT SONY ERICSSONS CUSTOMER SERVICE IS COMPLETE AND UTTER $!^%* As a warning to anyone with a sony ericsson, if your phone malfunctions, the last thing you want to do is send it to sony ericsson to get repaired!

I bought this W710 to be my partner during walking around Yorkshire. Actually, I quite happy with this Sony model. But I had some problems: - during the long walk the battery's capacity not enough for 8 hours playing music and on you way you have not possibility to charge your mobile - dust going inside external display and it does not look good. I have not figgurate out how to clean it - very low quality of the sound even if I use quality headphones - internal camera makes absolutely terribly pictures - I put 8Gb memory stick inside my mobile, but I belive it cannot accept this size, strange but Sony gurantee acceptance of 32Gb - very strange emulation removebale device during USB connection to my computer (other Sony models have much better interface) - very slow processor, slow external connection, radio doesnot have digital band I hope the next generation Sony mobile will not have those problems and it will be real partner for long-distance walking...

Rubber grip came off within 4 months. 2. two keys "5" and "C" stopped working. 3. comes ot of stand-by mode for no reason. The display goes on and off thru night even when the fone is left untouched on the table. There is no SSMS/ bluetooth message or anything for the display to start off. Due to this battery runs out quicker than what it should. 4. Agree that the phone camera should be used in natural light. But other phones with 2MP resolution definitely give much better results indoors. It definitely does not justify its cost.

i moved from samsungs to the w800i which i found to be a wonderful phone after 12 months i decided to upgrade and stayed with sony ericcson the w710i is ugly but beauty comes from within i love the pedometer as i walk everywhere and it helps me know when im being lazy, the walkman feature is as good as the w800i, i have dropped it 3 times and it remains scuff free. i upgraded to the lg shine 2 weeks ago for aesthetic reasons and im now selling the beauty and sticking with the beast this is a brill phone.

got this phone on a contract with o2, i have always liked the sonyericson phones. It was free on the contract and that was fine with me, came with 512 mb, even better, and speakers, tinny sure but it was free so i said hah. mind you the headphones supplied are great, you also have the option of a nice little mic for handsfree. Its a sports phone, yet ive never known anyone want a phone for sports. if your having issues with this phone its probably because you didnt have a sony ericson beforehand. i like the fact it has an rss reader and the web works perfectly on it. if your having issues with web connection go to the mobile networks providers site and get teh settings sent to your phone, accept them on your phone, if your on some networks you need to send a picture message first before you can receive them and other networks take 24 hours to activate. vodafone i never figured out but i think you have to call them to get it activated. if you still cant get on the net try travelling to another town, the internet connection exchange there might work better. still having issues, are you getting signal? no signal = no net. finally this phones software for connectivity is great, i only use file transfer and have tested the internet connection. could be useful when i move out. all in all an outstanding phone. last comment: o2 ftw

I had this phone for 2 months and loved it as i love to listen to music and having all my fave Shania Twain songs on my phone was fantastic. the only problem i have with it is that it dont cope very well with being ran over by a car, now it spends its life as a door-stop, a very good one at that!!!

I have had this phone for about 2 months. It is meant for fitness and I dont use that. You wold think that me having this phone would be pointless but the phone is outstanding. it has not made me feel bad once and the music player is awesome. the graphics are perfect and the connectivity and battery life is superb. another Sony Ericsson triumph!

This phone is very slylish especially if put around your arm with the band. The only issue i am facing is that the outer rubber grip that is provided comes out and then it looks very shabby as u cannot stick to the original perfection.

I've had the phone about 2 months & it is so far so good. The radio & MP3 are excellent + if you are used to SE the menus are a doddle. The only irritating things are the fact that you can't switch between the radio/MP3 with the phone closed; the menu should only have 9 options not 12 (so you can shortcut to them all); the buttons should have been metal not plastic; the flip can be awkward/fiddly to open - it could have done either with a button (Motorola style) or at least a space left between each bit of the clam-shell to fit your finger into (I'm sure this is a guy thing that come from having fat fingers!); but most disappointing is the camera which is RUBBISH. Overall though, it does exactly was it says on the tin & is a decent stab at a flip-phone.
