Sony Ericsson W610i review

 Review: May 2007

Rating:

In a nutshell: Candy bar style phone with 2 megapixel camera with autofocus, video camera, music player, radio, memory card and Bluetooth.

The Sony Ericsson W610i is a mid-range Walkman phone with the new Walkman® 2.0 player. The first thing to say is that this is yet another superb phone from Sony Ericsson. It's not at the top end of the range, so it misses out on a couple of features, but offers almost everything you'd want from a music phone at a good price.

The Walkman range is now established as probably the best range of mobile phones for playing music. The W610i has the latest version of the Walkman player and is pretty well as easy as using an iPod. The Walkman key gives you one-click access to the player and from there you can play, rewind, fast forward, equalise, shuffle tracks and create playlists. Audio quality is as good as a dedicated MP3 player, and a standard set of headphones is included in the sales package. The phone is also compatible with stereo Bluetooth wireless headsets - available separately. The W610i is equipped with Sony Ericsson's MegaBass™ feature which enhances bass frequencies - a useful feature to switch on for some types of music. It also has PlayNow™ & TrackID™. PlayNow is a service for downloading ringtones (which you have to pay for) and TrackID is a free service that identifies songs that you hear on the radio - cool.

Comprehensive CD-ripping software (Disc2Phone) is supplied with the phone and the USB mass storage interface lets you transfer music with drag and drop simplicity. Whilst the built-in memory of the phone is limited, the W610i is compatible with Sony's Memory Stick Micro™ (M2™) memory cards, and a 512 Mbyte card (enough for around 100 songs) is included in the sales package. This can be expanded to 2 Gbytes - a 2 Gbyte card can be bought for around £30. In addition to the music player, the W610i also includes an RDS FM radio.

The W610i has the same type of camera used in the W810i - a 2 megapixel camera with autofocus and a flash. It can also capture video clips. This is an excellent camera - one of the best in the sub-£200 price range. The display is a bright, clear TFD LCD which is easy to read. It doesn't have the high resolution of the flagship Walkman phone (the W880i), but again is one of the best in this price range.

Physically, the W610i is quite a bit thinner than the older W810i, but isn't as thin as the ultra-thin W880i. It's a good size to hold in your hand. The only gripe that we have about the W610i is the small size of the keys. If you've got big hands you'd be better off sticking with the W810i.

Overall, this is another fantastic Walkman phone, positioned in the sub-£200 market and offering outstanding value for money, with the small key size the only issue. The big question is how the W610i fits into the Walkman range. Is it a replacement for the W810i or is it a lower-spec model? We think that it's really the replacement for the W810i. Compare the W610i and the W810i and you'll see that the feature list is nearly identical - the main difference is that the W610i is thinner, has a new style of keypad and uses the latest software. The W810i was one of the very best phones of 2006, and the W610i is a worthy successor. Other phones to consider are the near-identical K550i, the 3G W660i and the ultra-slim W880i.

Sony Ericsson W610i features include:

  • 2 megapixel camera with autofocus, photo light and 2.25x digital zoom
  • Camcorder
  • Display: TFD LCD, 262,000 colours, 176 x 220 pixels
  • Walkman music player (supports MP3 & AAC formats)
  • FM radio
  • Polyphonic ringtones / Music tones
  • Speakerphone
  • Sound recorder
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS, email
  • 3D Java games
  • Animated wallpaper
  • WAP, Web browser, RSS feeds, picture blogging
  • GPRS, EDGE
  • Memory: Memory Stick Micro™ (M2™) support (512 Mbyte card included)
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB mass storage, infrared, modem
  • Organiser: Alarm clock, Calculator, Calendar, Contacts, Notes, Phone book, Stopwatch, Tasks, Timer
  • Flight mode
  • Vibration alert
  • Quadband
  • Size: 102 x 46 x 14 mm
  • Weight: 93g

A very good phone, or should I say an extremely good phone. I had mines for 2 yrs now and although it has died and past on it was really ejoyable. It is a strong phone, i used to drop mines every second every day and it worked just fine although when I upgraded to a 2 gb card it was annoyingly slow, some of the apps wont even load. All in all its a good phone. Ideal for kids (like myself) as it can take the knocks. The screen got damaged and a purplinh blob formed in the top of the screen though that can be fixed by takiing it to your local phone shop. Right now im going to try and ressurect it fix the screen and try and keep for another 2 yrs hopefully or ill buy a samsung jet or a different touchscreen phone.

it is the perfect phone if u want a phone that has almost everything u'd want...from music to internet...to camera...at a very handy price(it's really affordable at most places now...infact i got it just for around 7000 bucks...(indian!))... this is my advice to anyone going for this phone...the keypad is a problem initially...but as u get accustomed to the phone....the keypad wud be no problem...infact now...i like it...coz it's different!!!!!but..ya...i'm not too much into texting...u can test it before u go for it according to ur requirements... as for the music..and camera...they are ultimate....i've fallen hard for this phone ever since i got it into my hands....the sound quality is excellent...both on headphones and speaker..although some cynics complain of a low sound volume....but i've personally found it very acceptable..infact i practically go deaf once the headphones are inside my ears!!!!and the voice calling quality is also great... the screen is awesome....i'm yet to see a better display by any phone in this range....it's very clear even in sunlight....and the walkman interface is great....it's new...and its very user friendly...and just plain cool!!!!! all in all im in love with this phone and i would recommend it to anyone who wants to buy a decent phone for themselves!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Worset Phone ever made, worked well for the first month, but couldnt handle the day to day tear and wear. now will not turn on properly, has a tendency to not recieve text sms, phone calls cut short, freezing up, back of phone dosnt stay on meaning battery falls out lossing the time every time its in my pocket, music player was good, untill the speaker fell out, glued back in, but never the same sound, bluetooth inactive, will assign random pieces of deleted pictures to contacts photos, loved the phone for the first phew months but such a shame it is falling to pieces

Works competently as a phone and mp3 player, but the camera is less than perfect. My k750i's camera was leagues ahead. The pictures are worse than what I get out of my old 1.3Mp mini digi cam. The buttons are also too small. Nice features, but could be so much better with keys designed for human beings and a camera that performed more competently than a VGA one (slight exageration lol). Oh, and the vibration is weedy... only had a few months and already looking to upgrade. But not bad overall.

its a great phone. it has better things than w810 and previous walkman phones. like 1000 sms memory what i dislike about this phone is keypad specially the round dpad. and right and left buttons. no 3.5 AV jack for headphones. no usb jack (for everything like charges, datacable and headphones to plug in you only have one pop port, in the long run pop port will not work) it doesnt have 2 million colors it doesnt have legendry dedicated fast forward and nd buttons on the keypad layout. no fast forward play pause and rewind buttons on handsfree. you cant make folders to save good sms. if these things were there in w610 this would be the best mobile of the century.

What it is is that I cannot hear anything from the person on calling/being called unless I switch on the speaker (then everyone around hears the conversation). I had the phone back to SE for repair and got it back a few days later it went again. I had the phone replaced and a few days later the new phone does the same. After buying my phone off PrePayMania, I was excited as it looked awesome. But when I tried the camera (2MP) it had a line going down the middle. Otherwise the camera is excellent. You may not think a line would be annoying, but on every picture ive taken there is this thin black line down the middle. Also, after getting it back after 3 weeks, the problem still wasnt fixed and after a further 1 week, numbers: 2,3,6,9 couldnt be pressed, meaning I couldnt type in someones number. However before these problems occured this phone is great, the walkman is great, and im sure my phone is just a 1 off. I would recommend!!

The phone is very easy to use and has great settings and options. The camera is good but has a delay taking pictures which can lead to them coming out blurry. This phone is stylish and great value for money, its walkman function is particularly good and has good quality. It is a little to thick for my liking yet is very easy to hold in your hand.

I took a few days to get used to the keys but after those first few days I have not looked back. Getting the phone for 59.99 with a 5 top up voucher from Virgin seems to myself a steal! The camera is first class, I recently went to Morocco with me I had a 8 megapixel digital camera and my Sony Ericsson W610i with it's 2 megapixel camera, Pictures of my son riding a camel took with either camera looked identical. Also the walkman player has quality sound, I'm trying hard to think of any negatives about this phone but I just can't even a year maybe even two years this in my opinion is the best phone for under 60 possibly even under 100. I can't see myself wanting another phone for awhile, A top notch phone from a top notch company. It's a shame I cant score the phone higher than a 5, It deserves a 100!

Camera is very impressive in the right conditions. The only slight drawback is i have some dust under the screen-anyone know how to get rid of it? Despite this tiny problem, it is an amazing phone, well worth the 80 I spent on it. W610i is the best phone. i know it has small keys but they still work. but the best thing is that its doesnt break that easily... My w610i fell into a pond i didnt realise but when i check my pocket it wasnt there, it was in the pond. I took it out opend the case got all the water out left at the back of the computer for bout 3 hours and then on the heater and the next moring it was orking like a charm.

If you like music then this is the phone for you. it comes with a 512mb memory card which stores alot of music. It is easy to use. the button are little small but you get use to them. The design odf the phone is very nice. The volume is quite loud on the phone. Overall it is an excellent phone.

Just received an unlocked w610i. Have now set it up to send and receive e-mail and connect via WAP dial up (my sim does not support GPRS). Had a D750 previously and this phone is brilliant, only minor quibble is the camera as I can't find a zoom. Anyway the walkman player is great, the screen clear and fresh looking. Would recommend it. Also the phone has great proportions.

Ant, when i 1st saw ure review, i said... wow!!! all of that writing? what is it a book? but it was honestly helpful. especially with 'THE' button. i thought sumting was wrong. what i hav a prob with is the battery life, it lasts for like 1 &1/2 days max. guess thats expected with the features included. and i have to be OCNSTANTLY wipin the keypad because finger prints show on it. other than that. i love it 4/5 stars for me!

I had this phone for a couple of days and am exchanging it for another model. Reason being the keys. They are very difficult to deal with. The number 4 key is more or less non-responsive and sometimes when pressing it, because of where the camera key is situated, you end up activatiing the camera in the middle of a text msg!!! I have small hands and even I found the keys impossible, particularly the navigation keys which do not feel nice to use as they dig into your finger. The camera is ok but not great, the W810i has a much better camera. The best feature on this phone is the walkman player, as a music phone this handset does deliver. If you just want to make calls from your phone and listen to some phat beats, get this handset. But if you're text crazy (like myself) this is not the phone for you, purely because of the keys.

I absolutely hate this phone! After having the W800i for two years, I thought it was about time for a change. I loved the W800i, so I decided to stick with Sony Ericsson. What a mistake! I had to send the first phone I had back, as the 4 and 6 keys stuck, the second model I now have also has the same problem, as well as intermittent crackling whilest talking on the phone. The battery life is appauling, the W800i would only need chanrging 1-2 times per week, the W600i I have to charge almost daily! The keys (when they work) are fiddly. The camera is absolutely terrible, especially compared to the W800i and the video? Forget it! Oh and to top it all off, the phone is slower than a Granny with a zimmer... stay away from this phone, Thw W800i was WAY better!
