Sony Ericsson W595 Review
Phone rating:
In a nutshell: An attractive slide phone with the outstandingly
good Walkman 3.0 music player, the W595 also has an FM radio, a 3.2
megapixel camera, 2GB memory card, Bluetooth, 3G with HSDPA, and not
forgetting the cool "shake control". Available in Blue, Black,
White, Grey or Sakura (a floral pattern.)
Review: October 2008. Updated June 2009.
Do you remember the good old days when mobile phones just worked? We're
talking about 2006. In those days, Sony Ericsson made phones that did
what it said on the tin. Then in 2007 most of the phones they made didn't
work. Some, like the W580i, just
fell to pieces when you opened the box. Others, like the W910i
were absolutely brilliant until you switched them on. Then they switched
themselves off again and had to go back to the shop. There are signs
that Sony Ericsson have turned the corner in 2008, but they still have
a long way to go before their reputation is restored, so we're going
to be suspicious of any new phones they produce until they've proved
themselves to be reliable.
This is particularly relevant for the W595 because it looks almost
exactly the same as the incredibly unreliable W910i released a year
previously. It looks the same on the outside. It looks the same on the
inside too, with an identical list of features, apart from a slightly
upgraded camera. Only the name has changed. Oh, and it's got fatter
and heavier too. What have Sony Ericsson put inside it? Not a bigger
battery, because the battery life seems to be almost exactly the same
as the W910i. Maybe it's new firmware. That's it, Sony Ericsson have
spent a whole year fixing the bugs in the W910i firmware, and the new
firmware is so much better it weighs an extra 20 grams. Mystery solved.
OK, so this phone is just the same as the W910i, except it's heavier
and the bugs have been fixed. This makes it a fantastic phone. We loved
the W910i when we first reviewed it. It was only after the user reviews
started flooding in that it became obvious that there was a problem.
The W595 is a nicely styled slide phone with a tapered top edge and
a smooth slide action. It's an excellent size - not superslim, but compact
and good to hold. As a Walkman phone, it has music controls featured
prominently when the slide is closed. The keypad is easy to use, despite
the keys being a touch small, and it has an easy-to-use circular navigational
key, not the dreaded joystick that appears on some of their models.
The screen is large, bright and high resolution (240 x 320 pixels) and
the menus are clear and simple to navigate.
The W595 also has Sony Ericsson's "Shake Control" that lets
you change to a new track by giving the phone a flick. The motion sensor
also auto-rotates between portrait and landscape viewing of photos.
The W595 is a great music phone, as you'd expect. The Walkman player
has received plenty of praise before, and this is the new version 3.0.
You can create and manage playlists, shuffle songs, equalise, etc, and
album art can be displayed when music is playing. The supplied software
lets you transfer music from PC to phone, and rip music from CD's. The
W595 has excellent audio quality, either through the loud stereo speakers,
or via a conventional stereo headset or a Bluetooth
stereo headset. The MegaBass feature helps to enhance bass frequencies
for a fuller sound. In addition to the music player, there's an FM radio
with RDS.
The built-in memory is limited to 40 Mbytes, but a 2GB memory card
(enough for around 500 MP3 tracks) is supplied with the phone
and the W595 supports cards up to 8 Gbytes.
The camera has been upgraded to 3.2 megapixels but lacks autofocus
and a flash, so don't expect too much from it. The camera can also record
video, and video calling is possible on a 3G network with the front
mounted video camera.
The W595 is a brilliant phone. It's what the W910i should have been.
We think that the bugs have been fixed, and judging from the user reviews
below there don't seem to be many problems at all. Top phone! Check
out the new W705 for an even better
phone!

- 3G with HSDPA & video calling

When my phone (LG Viewty) broke after four years of heavy-duty, I began
asking around for a temporary second-hand phone to use until I found
a new one. The W595 has outranked all of my previous phones including
an array of Blackberrys and LGs. The music quality is probably the highlight
for me as the quality is greater than my iPad and it's loud. Compared
to modern phones, it's a brick but I find the size and usability more
comfortable than something built solely to be the thinnest. It may be
old but I really don't believe it's past its sell-by-date just yet.

Got this phone for Christmas and absolutely love it, I was thinking
of getting the Sony Ericsson W910i because my friend has it but it kept
breaking and decided to go with the upgrade. I have it in blue which
is a great colour and it looks really stylish, however, the only things
i dislike about this phone is how hard it is to get the back off, and
the camera has no flash. It has a very good battery life compared to
my last phone (Samsung U600) and the music quality is excellent (even
though I usually use my Ipod). Texts are simple to send with a reasonable
sized keypad. I think this is a star buy. *****

Just bought it on a t-mobile contract £15/month 100 mins and 200 texts,
you only have to pay £39.99 for the phone which is an outstanding price
for an outstanding phone. It has a 3.0 walkman music player with the
shake control feature and amazing sound quality. It has a 3.2 megapixel
camera, but its a pity that you can only zoom in and out on VGA mode
and that there isn't a flash, but apart from that definitely a must

Well when I got this phone I thought great what a nice looking phone
but my first disappointment came when trying to open the back cover
it was very plasticy and easy to break so was very careful to take it
off gently otherwise you can easily breat the end bits. Well on use
the phone is good, everything is good from a feature point of view,
I like the sms text coming up with the little box to show you all the
letters you get with each key press which was handy. The keypad is a
little small so large hands best avoid. Speakerphone, OS everything
is fairly decent no complaints there. Music I am not into it as I have
my ipod for that. The battery life on this phone though says good bat
life actually is very poor when you have all the features enabled. It
lasted less than two days. I then disabled all the features I did not
use, switched off 3g to gsm, switched off voice calling, switched off
bluetooth to increase bat life, took screensaver off to a jpg pic and
I got just over 2 days. All in all poor battery life and hate to think
if you use all the features you will be lucky to hit just over a day
with battery. I sent my phone back asap to swap for another model.

Hi! Im 15 years old, and I just upgraded to the W595 from my beloved
W810i, and I have one word that says it all for this phone-fantastic.
Internet browsing is second to none. The phne itself is a great size,
the screen is brilliant, both in colour and resolution, as well as size.
The Walkman player 3.0 is top notch! What surprised me the most was
the new media manager from SE, and I'm telling you folks, I nearly fainted
when I saw it. Similiar to the PSP, the new Sony Ericsson media manager,
really does manage media, with a breeze! Its effortless and very smooth.
When coming to sound quality/clarity and loudness, this phone even beats
the Nokia 5610-its so good. The camera is great, but only if the lighting
is great as well! The only gripe I have with this phone is that it doesn't
support my external SE Xenon flash. I really hope that SE will release
an update for this in the near future. But all in all, superb phone,
and for those of you who are on the lookout for a new mob ile, don't
hesitate another second-get the W595. Trust me, it's worth every single
penny.

This is a top phone, even though the camera mp is relatively low but
the picture quality is still very good. However, I find a couple of
things not satisfying. First the fancy thing where you can adjust the
volume of the walkman by moving your wrist. It's not working, most of
the time volume comes down when I was flipping my wrist upward. Also,
most of the time the walkman just not responding to the wrist movement
at all. The second thing is, the design of the back cover is really
stupid, the sales girl even told me some people even broke the back
cover while trying to open it. So my advice is, don't keep changing
your SIM card or the memory stick. But I still like the phone very much.

PROS: Excellent music features, superb design, good built, nice display
features, built-in You Tube application, accelometer sensor for auto-rotate,
shake control, 2 GB memory card. CONS: No flash & autofocus, though
3.2 MP but an average camera, a bit overpriced, no front camera for
video calling, battery life is just about ok. OVERALL REVIEW: This phone
is an attractive slide phone with the outstandingly good Walkman 3.0
music player. Being a Walkman phone, it justifies its brand name in
providing a superior musical experience, even better than an ipod. The
camera features could have been far better with the presence of flash
& autofocus, which is definitely expected in the phones of this price
range. Moreover, it would have been a better buy if it would have been

I hated this phone. I found the software jerky and wierd visually. I
am used to smooth visual interchanges as on my previous SE phones. Felt
like a shortcut in terms of technical design to me. keys too small.
And why do sony persist in supplying such useless appalling headphones
with their phones??? I tested the sound quality against a range of different
headphones I had. No doubt about it the headphones are beyond bad.

to press making it a bit of an effort to text, and that it seems a bit
sluggish texting while playing music or browsing I'd highly reccomend

I bought this a couple of days ago for 150 quid, which made it an extremely
good buy compared to the too plasticky XpressMusic competition from
Nokia and others. The Sony Ericsson software suite synchs with Outlook
and imports/exports data pretty smoothly. If you need a better than
average camera with flash, not the right phone. And ditto if you want
GPS or a smartphone of the WinMobile/Symbian60 kind. Otherwise, at this
price, the 595 is hard to resist. Seems fairly well made and looks the
business too. Minus one star for naff Vodaphone themes.

I have the w595 in blue - it is such a gorgeous phone! Not only does
it look great on the outside (a lot of people have said how nice it
looks) but it works well. The battery life is good and, as with all
sony ericssons, you can find out exactly what percentage of the battery
is left so it never dies on you. I didn't like how the zoom doesn't
work unless the camera is set to VGA. Appart from that the camera is
really good and features such as PhotoDJ mean that you can edit photos
after you take them. The speakers on the phone are fantastic - there
are two which play music to about the same standard as my (£90) ipod
speakers. Songs downloaded from itunes which are not itunes plus won't
work and i can't get the wrist-flick song-changing thing to work but
despite that i still like the walkman.

I got this phone for my birthday (11th November =]) i was so excited
when i first heard about this phone. Finally i got it, BEAUTIFUL DESIGN
but i got a bit annoyed at first with the auto rotate in media but i
got used to how it works now. One thing i absolutely dislike is the
lack of auto focus and the "no flash n camera". How can you make a better
camera and NO FLASH OR FOCUS what is the point. I had the w810i bought
june 07 which has a 2mp camera and flash and auto focus and i absolutely
love it. I LOVE THE CAMERA even tho its 2, but now i got this phone
i dnt see the point in me takin photos bcos i dnt have a steady hand
and i lyk experimentin with light. So i use my w810i for photos now.
But it is a beautiful phone and design. 10/10 for design. 8/10 for camera.
Oh yeah and wat is with the weird lights on the buttons. i know what
everyones talking bout now. Lyk "1" is the brightest and # is the dimmest.
Talk about dodgy! =s

I got this phone 3 days ago... what can i say? it's amazing!! the screen
is really bright, the camera is WAY faster and bettery quality than
the samsung u600 and there's nothign wrong with my keypad being stiff..
but yeah the lights are brighter on the 1 and 4 keys haha. i got this
phone for Phones4u on orange for £129, however its unlocked and unbranded!
it comes with 3 games and the walkman is amazing qulaity - plays music
clearer than my ipod nano (same headphones). the only thing is the battery
life? it seemed to go down to 90% during the night when i was not using
it... end of the day it was around 60% with a few songs and a game?
is this what other people are experiencing? anyway, get this phone :)
it looks really nice in red and silver :) Just another thing, the lights
on the keypad change with the light conditions. When it is bright, the
screen brightens so you can see it better, and the keypad dims. When
it is dark, the screen goes darker and the keypad goes brighter. That's
probably why peopel are sayign two next to eachother are different :)
it's really useful because i hate it when your phone blinds you in the
night lol

This is my first Sony Ericsson and probably my last - It came free with
the service plan I signed up to (or should I say I did not pay extra
for the phone). I bought the phone two weeks ago and have had to charge
the battery every single night even though I am a very light user ie.
one or two short calls per day and have only sent 4 text messages to-date.
I have contacted T-mobile who say it could be a fault with the battery;
nevertheless, I'm still not impressed. Like others have commented, the
light on the keypads are irregular on my phone it's only consistently
bright on #1 the other buttons are dull. I don't like the predictive
word option box that appears when your texting (this is personal preference)
it's quicker for me to tap word in full than to select an option! and
finally, the phone comes without a manual (other than the quick view
guide to get you started with the basics). I was told to download updates
from the Sony website (this is new to me) which I've done but unsure
if it's worked as I have no idea what's been updated or whether it was
a success, as having completed all the steps it does not confirm just
brings you back to the start menu. Removing the back is difficult to
get of even with nails. I'm sure there must be some good features to
the phone; volume is good, but I've lost interest with it now and will
be giving it to my son once I've sorted the battery issue, then I'm
going straight back to using my old Samsung phone.

I have had the Sony Ericsson W595 for a couple of days now. Not had
much experience with phones except a Nokia 3330 and Samsung P400. My
Samsung got broken so i decided to get this one. I am finding it strange
to get used to, but i am begining to like it. The camera is a lot better
than my last model and it has a lot of functions. The texting is impressive,
i find that easy to use. I too notice certain keys light up brighter
than others but that doesn't matter. The only thing i miss is a game
called Mobile Chess that was on my samsung. Does anyone know if there
is a chess game for this phone? I notice that when texting for example
that the screen goes off if you delay it too long when writing. Like
on the Samsung it had a 10 second delay, on this phone it is about 5
seconds. Can this be altered? For CK in Eire, i noticed that also, the
way i get the back off is to use a small flat ended Jewlers Screw driver
to gently take the back off. Don't force it as you might damage the
small bits of plastic that holds the back in place! I like this phone
but will let you all know better in time.

I have had 2 phones of this model now because of faults and damage.
It appears the screen is not of good strength as my 2nd phone has a
damaged screen. I am really dissapointed as the phone has a very stiff
keypad, which has been the Same on both phones. This makes texting painful.
I have spoken to the provider, and was informed that many comments are
becoming a growing issue with this phone. I think its pot luck if you
get one with a softer key pad. I have also noted the keypad has irregular
back light which is really a shame for such a new model and does make
me wonder they have lacked in some of the quality control.

I have been very impressed with it! Lovely display, excellent sound

so its fine for me! 2GB is reasonable storage size! Bit disapointed
that theres no walkmate on my phone! (Guessing thats something to do
