Sony Ericsson W302 review

 Review: January 2009

Last updated June 2009

Rating:

In a nutshell: A budget Walkman phone.

Sony Ericsson have done a lot with the W302 to bring their Walkman range within reach of the entry-level market. This phone now retails for well under £100. It's an attractive superslim phone, measuring just 10.5mm thick and weighing a featherlight 78g. With an aluminium front, it feels strong enough to take some damage despite its small size. We'll take one star away for the keypad however, as the keys are gratuitously small and spaced out too far.

This is definitely a step up from previous budget Walkman phones like the W200i or W350i, which both missed out on some important features such as Bluetooth or a video recorder. There's nothing obviously missing from the spec of the W302. The screen is a TFT display with 262,000 colours, although the resolution is a little on the low side at 176 x 220 pixels. The camera is reasonable - 2 megapixels plus a video recorder - although there's no flash. Obviously there's an excellent Walkman player included, plus the bonus of an FM radio with RDS. The memory is rather small, at just 20 MB, but you can add memory cards up to 4GB. Connectivity is by Bluetooth or USB. Battery life is average.

However, even though this is a budget phone, there are still some problems that are really unacceptable. We deducted one star for the keypad, and we also have issues with the low volume from the speaker, the lack of customisable themes, and the fact that the phone menus are so slow. There is no PC sync software supplied, so the only way to move data onto the phone is via USB mass storage. Texting using the T9 software is painful, and the network connection doesn't seem to be robust, with the phone sometimes losing the network even in a good signal location. Although Sony Ericsson have packed a lot into this phone, we still feel that we should get more for our money. It could have been a 5 star phone if Sony Ericsson had put some more effort into ironing out these problems. We'd recommend the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic as a better alternative.

Sony Ericsson W302 features include:

  • 2 megapixel camera with 2.5x digital zoom and image stabiliser
  • Video camera
  • Display: TFT, 262,000 colours, 176 x 220 pixels
  • Walkman player (plays music and video)
  • FM radio with RDS
  • PlayNow, TrackID
  • Polyphonic ringtones / MP3 ringtones
  • Speakerphone
  • Sound recorder
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS, email
  • 3D Java games
  • Animated wallpaper
  • Personal organiser functions
  • Internet: EDGE, web browser
  • Memory: 20 Mbytes plus Memory Stick Micro™ (M2™) support (up to 4GB)
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB
  • Flight mode
  • Vibration alert
  • Quadband
  • Size: 100 x 46 x 10.5 mm
  • Weight: 78g
  • Talktime: 7 hours
  • Battery standby: 300 hours

This phone is ok if you want a basic phone, but I think that the network is poor and the memory for downloading songs is rubbish. It takes alot of pictures and videos alrightey, and luckily, you can put them onto the pc with your usb cable. It is just the network that is pretty awful......and that's not good if you have to make important calls....I prefer nokias anyday compare to sony erriccson - I think I will be buying another phone soon. xxxx :)

Guys, calm down. So you can't install themes? Big deal. In fact, I think people out there don't really care. And as for outlook, who uses it anymore! The world has moved on! It almost seems like everyone wants to find a way to critisize this phone. I can tell you the design is awesome, the camera is good, but the features are a bit boring- but it's pretty cheap, so what did you expect? The reason things like themes don't work is frankly, because Sony can't be bothered to update it. This is a small shame, but life isint fair, so I say go out there and buy this- for it's price, you won't regret it!!!

About the themes, i think it doesn't use *.thm theme files, may be another kind of themes. A strange thing is that when i downloaded opera mini from site: mini.opera.com ,the extension is not *.jar or *.jad, but something else, but i forgot it's extension. I knew it when i browse the files on the phone using mobyexplorer. Infact mobyexplorer i used was in *.jar. So i think this cellphone has something unusual according to the other SE phones.

This is a terrible phone slow menu rubbish themes and diabolical sound! what where they thinking about when they made this phone? I gave this phone 2 stars because there's this site called my W302 where you can get themes, ringtones.images and very good selection of games. Did i mention the poor signal quality and the internet that take a million years to load? please do not buy this or you will be regreting it. Go buy a W705 if you want a phone that's 10x better.

Very good phone overall, great camera and excellent music player. Excellent value for money although the menus are abit slow but if you can put up with that, get it! Very attractive and light too!

I've also been fooled into buying this phone when I saw wich features it had for such a low price. Every phone should at least work fine, no matter how expensive or cheap. They better make their budget phones with less (smooth working) features instead of adding all the features of a more expensive phone in poor quality.
