Sony Ericsson W300i Review
Phone rating:
Review: October 2006.
The Sony Ericsson W300i is a Walkman-branded clamshell phone that brings
the Walkman phone series to the mass market. Sony Ericsson have shaved
functionality off the phone in order to bring the cost down, but the
core music function is top notch. The music player supports a wide range
of formats and audio quality is very high. A 256 Mbyte memory card is
supplied as part of the sales package, and this is enough storage for
a decent number of music tracks. A larger
memory card can be added if needed. Transferring music tracks from
a PC is very easy with the supplied software and cable and drag-and-drop
file transfer. In addition to the music player, an FM radio with RDS
support is available.
Elsewhere functionality is nothing special. The camera is quite poor
with just VGA resolution (0.3 megapixels) with a video clip recorder.
The main screen is nice and clear, but small. The keypad is not the
easiest to use. Connectivity is very good however, with support for
Bluetooth, InfraRed, USB mass storage and Fast port. Battery life is
good.
Overall the W300i is a good all-round phone with excellent music capabilities
for the price. Some users are reporting that the phone freezes and has
to be returned to the shop, so be aware of this and the other shortcomings
of the phone before you decide whether or not to buy. A safer bet is
the more expensive W810i.
Features of the Sony Ericsson W300i include:
- VGA camera (640 x 480 pixels) with 4x digital zoom
- Video recording
- Main display: TFT, 262,144-colours, 128 x 160 pixels
- External display: monochrome
- Stereo music player
- RDS FM Radio
- Mega Bass for enhanced bass frequencies
- Integrated handsfree speaker
- MP3/AAC ringtones (40 voice polyphonic ringtones)
- Sound recorder
- Messaging: SMS, MMS, email
- 3D Java games
- Web browser
- Personal organiser functions
- Memory: 20 Mbytes plus 256 Mbyte Memory Stick Micro
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, Fast Port, Infrared, USB mass storage
- Flight mode
- GPRS, EDGE
- Vibrating alert
- Quadband
- Size: 90 x 47 x 24.5 mm
- Weight: 94g
- Talktime: up to 9 hours
- Battery standby: up to 400 hours

I dropped this phone in the bath, and after leaving it in the airing
cupboard overnight it still worked completely fine - mine was LITERALLY
indestrucible, and overall a good phone, the music function is great,
the camera isn't the worst i've ever seen on a phone, and like i said
- indestrucible. I had it for about 3 years and it only started going
weird towards the end. :)

I LOVE this phone! Its by far the best Ive ever had. HOWEVER i have
had one small problem with it - last week, i thought it had broken because
i could not switch it on even after 12 hours charging. After being left
turned off for a few days I was able to eventually turn it back on -
I think it may have sorted itself out. So far Its been fine. It looks
great, I have the white version which I think looks fantastic - not
cheap or plasticky. I also like the fact it has a large attachment to
put a strap or charm on. As for music, its first class. It holds a decent
amount of full track songs, sound is great and the headphones are decent
- even though i would have personally have preffered standard ones as
opposed to inner ear ones - the rubber covers for these I find quite
annoying and they come off easily. I like the fact that you can also
put itunes tracks on the phone - as they are not mp3 format i was worried
they would not work - but i was impressed that they did. Sending file
s is quick - the phone seems to send and recieve files quickly, which
i was happy with. People are moaning about the camera, but it is actually
fine in my opinion - not bad at all for a mobile. Just make sure you
select medium or large picture size if you wish to transfer to your
computer - for uploading to myspace or bebo for example. The video camera
is also fine- in fact it was a lot better than my brothers phone, which
is a samsung. I particularly like videodj, which has been easy and fun
to use. I think someone mentioned not being able to use tracks they
put on the mobile as ringtones - however i managed to do this on mine,
so it should not be a problem. I felt the cd which came with the mobile
wasnt the easiest to download, but once i had it up and running, transferring
tracks/videos and all the rest of it was really simple - similar to
an ipod. The walkman is similar to my ipod - i was really impressed.
And sound quality with headphones is great. However i think if yo u
wish to change songs you have to open the phone up to do it, otherwise
it just plays random songs. I couldnt find an external button to do
this - the orange button I found would only stop + start the walkman
and change the volume. I feel more dedicated walkman buttons externally
would make it easier to use. The battery life is poor when bluetooth
is switched on - so remember to switch it off. When switched off battery
life is fine. I find the charger and usb cable a bit fiddly, but with
use im finding it easier. Ive found using the buttons easy after practice
- though i agree that if you have large fingers you may struggle. I
can't really say Ive had problems with the phone, so far im impressed
and it does everything i need it to. Im also addicted to one of the
games on it! I also like the wallpaper schemes you can have on it, they
are colourful and look fab. Overall, impressed!

This phone worked very nicely for the first month. The US release didn't
provide a memory card, so I bought my own 1GB for $55. I put a lot of
money, time, and attention into this phone, but yesterday, after less
than a month of having it, it's started to malfunction quite seriously,
and I'm not sure if it will ever work again. I didn't drop it, I didn't
get it wet, but it won't turn on all the way, and when it does, it freezes.
I'm afraid I'll have to replace it, even though I did a lot to personalize
it. So if you're looking for something that won't fail on you, perhaps
go with a more expensive model.

I like the phone, but; I agree that the buttons are bit close together/small
and it is easy to mis-dial. I was transferring some files for to the
walkman and the phone became stuck in file transfer mode. When you turn
it on it shows a white background that eventually go's orange, but with
nothing else. I have taken the battery out overnight without success
(it's supposed to have autoreset capabilities). I've only had the phone
for 6 wks and now I will likely have to send it off for repair. I'm
not too impressed with this. Otherwise, I don't agree with those who

I bought the Sony Ericsson W300i a few weeks ago and really like it
a lot. I had a SIEMENS phone before (was my first ever cell phone) which
served it's purpose to make phone calls and do text. I enjoyed it but
it was time to get into the bells and whistles. I really like having
the cd to turn my music into mp3's as I was wondering how to do that!
It's fun to listen to music on my phone although I haven't done it a
lot yet. I am however disappointed that I can't use mp3s as ringtones
which I assumed I would be able to. Also I haven't found many ringtones
I can download for this phone. I see there are face plates for this
phone I have to look into this more. They looked kind of cool colors.
I understand what people are saying about the key pad how the keys are
flat and overlaping which for big fingers could become tricky. For me
it's fine cause I got small fingers! I agree about the camera it is
rubbish but I have a digital camera which I can take photos and then
download into the camera. So the poor camera and not being able to use
mp3s as ring tones are why I didn't give this phone 5 stars. I am happy
I bought this phone.

What is good about this phone: -great battery life. Lasts about 5 days
for me with plenty of mp3 and regular phone use every day. -great mp3
player. Not an ipod, but as close as you'll get on a phone. -great software.
very easy to use. -great looks. i think. -the external buttons don't
do anything stupid like turn on the mp3 player on loudspeaker when you
press them in your pocket by mistake. They do control the mp3 player
when you've turned it on yourself though. What's bad about this phone:
-camera's rubbish. But you know that by now. -transferring songs via
the software takes ages! I wonder if it is quicker to drag and drop
rather than use the sony pc software? I haven't got round to exploring
that yet. -the phone comes with Robbie Williiams songs and pictures
installed on it. Easy to ignore though. -the phone is fairly thick.
These minor problems aside, i love this phone!

I bought this phone 3 weeks ago. It's a great phone considering that
the battery lasts up to 4 days, in case of 7 hours of listening to music.
The only problem I had with the phone is that when I tried to open the
battery lid to change my sim card, I couldn't open it. So I went to
the Orange Shop where I bought it and I was told that it was a common
problem with all W300i's. Three employs tried to open it(including the
service guy that was there-he wasn't specialised on SE) and didn't succed.
I went to a specialised service(they advised me to go there), and the
guy there opened it in 2 seconds(I'm not kidding). The key was brute
force. After opening it and closing it a few times, the lid can be easier
to remove. Now it's ok. I bought for the walkman function witch is great,
and it costed me half the price of a W800i, which has a greater energy
consumption(the w300i has the outer display wich is monochrome and wich
has a very low energy consumption). In conclusion, if you want a phone
with mp3 player this is the most accesible and more lasting. Great phone
overal.

outstanding...all the people who are giving bad reviews abt it i m sure
they really don't have the phone..The Mp3 is just outstanding...The
looks is good but can me more slimmer like the motorazar or samsung
ultra slim...The Camera can be little more improved one...but who cares
i m not at all interest in the camera...the biggest part is the music
and this walkman phone does his duties very very well...So guys go for
it...and feel the real music...

I've had the phone for one month now and I must say I am very satisfied
with it. It responds fast, I have no problems in hearing the person
I am talking to, the walkman sounds very good, the menu is easy to understand
and use, it has all the connections that are available: Bluetooth, IR
and even an USB cabel included (at least in my country). It has aslo
some interesting applications, such as MusicDJ, VideoDj, PhotoDj where
you can compose your own songs (also prearranged tunes of salsa, groove,
reggea, techno...), make your own videos out of pictures and so on.
Although it has some bad points, such as the small screen and VGA camera
it is absolutely worth the money and I recommend it to everyone who
wants a walkman, radio, phone, organizer, camera in one piece.

I am going to try and write an impartial review here. If what you want
from a phone is a walkman then this is the phone for you, if like me
you already have an iPod don't bother. This phone has been optimised
for music and I think has taken a few hits elsewhere because of it.
The texting system is good, the menu system is good, just like all other
sony ericssons. Nice file transfer system and I like that it comes with
the 256mb memory card.. but the phone feels cheap and plasticy the screen
is very small, and camera is appalling. If you have a nokia 6320i with
a 256mb memory card, then what you have is better. this phone is ...
alright.

Having had a Nokia from year dot, I was some what apprehensive on buying
a Sony Ericsson. But it was recommended by Orange as good all rounder.
I wanted mainly music and wasn't that bothered with the camera - the
perfect choice! Its so simple to use and download music onto, the loudspeaker
is a bit tinny but you can live with it, the ear phones sound great.
The navigation to the menu is easy to use and had no problems getting
used to it. What with the issues nokia are having at the moment with
their software I would personnaly recommend this phone as a perfect
replacement

Great job from sony-ericsson. The've done it. Stylish, design, clamshell
type and it's walkman , folks !!!!!!! I am absolutely in love with this
phone. It has everything, but the camera quality. Still, it has a good
night mode option, that sometimes can clarify the image. If you want
a nice looking phone with superb qualities, go for this one. 256 MB
memory card, very good earphones, clamshell design, radio..... these
should impress everyone. It also has a good battery life, so i can listen
to music for hours, without having difficulties.

I have had this phone for a week. It's easy to use, easy to navigate
and generally great fun to have! I have used up almost all my monthly
minutes and texts already because I can't put it down! My other mobile
is not getting much use now (the old Sony Ericsson K700i) as the features
are just not as good. We have 5 different mobile phones between us currently,
we had 4 last year etc some newer than others and this is by far my
favourite! So much so, that I have actually written my first review!

Out of the box, i was blown away by the design of this neat & lightweight
little clam phone. I particularly like the black/silver version with
the orange back light display which can be activated by the only external
botton on the phone, to gove info on battery life, memory, signal strength
& appointments. The buttons are flat with orange back glow. The software
is easy to use. Excellent radio, mp3 player, good sound through ear
phones. Battery life is very good. Very good sound quality reception..
On the negative side, the camera is not high megapixel, so if your priority
is to take pics, look at something else.If you are a big music fan-get
an iPOD-4mb You can upgrade the memory on the phone from 256mb to 512
or 1gb inexpensively { approx £43 for 1mb stick} Overall i can't praise
the phone enough, lots of features not mentioned in this review. Perfect
phone & simple to use out of the box. Well done Sony/Ericsson.

key & add in the number - it's as simple as that!! This phone is very

As well as being a damn good-looking phone, it's the features that really
make this one a cracker. Having come straight from a LG C3300 (good
in its day but maybe past it now), I am just amazed at what the W300i
can do. It really is entirely self-contained: a fine camera, a radio,
MP3 player... oh, and you can make phone calls too. The only down side
(there's always something, isn't there) is the way of texting numbers.
Quite simply, there is no number-only mode - meaning lots of key strokes
to get to the numbers which follow the letters, etc. And if you try
to text two digits in a row, it gets all confused and combines letters
instead. I find this very basic failure pretty bad. What on Earth were
Sony Ericsson thinking of? But all-in-all, I can't complain. Easily
the best and most useful phone I've had. Go and buy one!

Still getting used to it in some areas, but that what happens when you
get a new phone, but am very happy with it. I'm very sad to say this

I was given the option of a new W300i or £100 to re-new my contract.
I took the W300i on the previso that if it was rubbish, I'll send it
back. I still have it. It is a good bit of kit with all the relevant
functions that a mobile phoner needs these days. For example, it has
an easy to use FM radio that connects straight away. The headphones
are the clearest to use and they have a universal socket which connects
to the phone connection lead. Better still it has a memory card (M2)
which allows you to store as many songs as a ipod. If there is a fault
with the phone, it has a naff camera - not enough mega pixels and the
memory card which comes with the phone is too small. If you want a phone
for music and calls - get this one (and buy a 1GB card straight away.)
