Sony Ericsson K770i Review
Phone rating:
In a nutshell: An excellent camera phone, the K770i is an updated
and slimmed-down version of the classic K800i camera phone. Its camera
is 3.2 megapixels with autofocus and digital zoom, but it uses a standard
LED instead of the superior xenon flash fitted on the K800i. With video
calling, a music player, Bluetooth, expandable memory and a high quality
LCD display, the K770i is a good all-round package with a relatively
slim and lightweight form.
Review: November 2007. Last updated July 2009.
The K770i is a rehashed version of the K800i.
The K800i was one of the best camera phones ever, and the K770i has
most but not all of the features that made the K800i so good. The K770i
has a new look, with the annoying joystick of the K800i replaced by
a 5-way navigation key, and it's a little slimmer and lighter than the
old K800i. However, the K770i is missing a few features that the K800i
had: a xenon flash on the camera (the K770i has a weaker LED flash);
and the internal memory of the K770i is 16 Mbytes compared with 64 Mbytes
in the K800i.
Available in Truffle Brown (pictured), Pink, Sandy Beige or Ultra Violet
(purple), it's worth considering as a slimline alternative to the K800i,
but on balance we still prefer the good old K800i.
Features of the Sony Ericsson K770i include:
- 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, flash and 3.2x digital zoom
- Video camera with video light
- 3G video calling
- Display: TFT, 262,144 colours, 240 x 320 pixels
- MP3 player
- MP3/AAC ringtones
- Sound recorder
- Messaging: SMS, MMS, Email
- 3D Java games
- Animated wallpaper
- Personal organiser functions
- Internet: Web browser, RSS feeds
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB
- Memory: 16 Mbytes plus Memory Stick Micro (M2) support (up to 2
Gbytes)
- Vibration alert
- Flight mode
- Triband (GSM 900/1800/1900) plus 3G (UMTS 2100)
- Size: 105 x 47 x 14.5 mm
- Weight: 95g

I got my K770i in April, either 3 or 4 years ago. I use it-surprise
surprise- as a phone and even after all this time, I only have to charge
it once a week. Unless my sister phones me on it. She chats forever
... in which case I have to charge it after 3 days. I can surf the net
on my phone or connect the phone to my netbook and use it as a modem.
I use the voice recorder as a dictaphone at meetings. I sync the phone
calendar to Microsoft Office on my PC. I have thought about getting
a more up to date phone but I am not interested in Android or apps and
it seems like there is no normal phone out there as good as this one.
So, I bought a second one off Ebay ready for when this one eventually
breaks! I LOVE MY PHONE!!

Just writing to tell you that I have used this phone to take pics from
the London Motor show and was pleasntly surprised with the results.
The camera is very good as long as you hold it steady BUT my only dissappointment
is that the silver finish used on the keypad is rapidly peeling off
considering its not even a yr old. This makes the phone look very cheap
and tacky, so be prepared.

I think the phone is good, but like in the main review, it has been
been stripped down from the K800i, but it still has a decent camera.
My problem is with the screen it does seem abit darker even with all
the brightness settings up, and the speaker is a bit tinnier than the
k800i even though that speaker wasnt the best at times and i know cause
it is slim but if you look at the g600 sound from the speakers is better.
Overall its a good phone and good style on the handset but dont expect
an upgrade on the k800i but a nice compromise to it

Love this phone it's been really great, excellent pictures, real easy
to use, excellent joystick, comes in purple, makes friends jelious except....
- cannot work out the flash or digital zoom in Camera mode. Can only
use zoom is video mode - Headphones started playing up ater 1 week (connection
on the phone to cable the problem) - The light or Lamp is totally un-useable
unless you are looking for your keys down a hole. Do not use it to take
photos. (ie. camera useless for night/club/bar shots) - poor documentation
in general, you have to learn yourself more than read about it. Posibly
the best way. - had to upgrade the memory to 4GB instantly as 256MB
is not really enough. - Music player interface and controlls do not
work well with Podcasts as you can only search by the minuet, not the
second.

Unfortunatley there is no options for no stars, so it got 1. The speaker
can be crackly. I use mine on pay as you go, with all phones when you
spend money you receive a service message telling you the updated balance,
however with the k770i if there is a service message on the screen it
won't signal for any messages received. This is no good if your texting
a friend. As mentioned below the phone scratches easily, however no
one mentions that the screen is not protected, so scratches on the screen
cannot be fixed by replacing the covers, I cannot read me screen in
daylight. mine has since stopped working, had it 6 months. Its rubbish
as mentioned a few times so far.

I've only had this phone a couple of days. It was a replacement for
my Nokia 6500 Slide which is a gorgeous looking phone but useless for
making or receiving calls due to it's dodgy reception. I've had Sony
Ericssons before and prefer their menu system to Nokia's. First impressions
are it's not a bad looking phone but I think girls will prefer it more
than guys. Quality of calls is very good even in weak signal areas.
In the past I've had the 750i and the 800i which have both been great
for taking pics and videos. Being from the same family I assumed the
K770i would be similar but have been disappointed by the camera. Video
quality is worse than the first camera phone I ever had years ago! Surely
when a manufacturer brings out a new model, it's meant to be an improvement
on the model it's replacing. A major selling point of the "K" phones
has been the camera (in the same way for the Walkman phones it's the
music player) so why is the camera on this so bad?? I'm getting really
frustrated by the quality of phones that are coming out these days.
They seem to be more style of substance. Why can't I find a phone that
looks good, has a large screen, a decent camera and music player with
excellent phonecall quality and a battery that lasts at least a week
between charges, not to mention one that's not built from cheap plastic.
When I get a phone, I want to be able to keep it for a while, not upgrade
every 6 months or so. If they want us to think of mobile phones as disposable
items then they have to bring the cost right down! At the moment I feel
like we're being ripped off.

i reviewed this phone before and previously thought that is was amazing.
The looks of the phone are outstanding, for a month or two, then the
problems begin... it seems that phones these days are not built to last,
all of the buttons on mine are fading now and all the paint on the 5
key has worn off completly. The chrome finish on some parts of the phone
also looks smart, when new, on the 4 way pad for direction it has all
started flaking off and also the camera button it has come off completly
which makes it look cheap. I also have encountered a new problem where
it does not detect a memory card in the phone and is a real pain to
fiddle around with as the outter casing has to be removed, which is
tricky in itself. However if you dont mind wear and tear after a month
it is still a nice phone, good pictures and also the music functions
as ever on a sony ericsson are great. The looks are good and design
perfect (i love the way it has an extra camera on the front and the
headphone/charger slot on side) The best thing though just has to be
the warning red light on the front when battery is low and the amazing
blue strip of light that glows when you open the sexy camera shutter....
all in all...O.K for a bit

This would be the perfect 3G phone if it were not for its appalling
3G performance. It's a nice slim lightweight phone with a really nice
screen and is a real joy to use and looks great in truffle brown. But,
and here's the but, it has major problems with holding on to 3G signals.
Where I live the 3G coverage is very good and both my previous 3 phones
(N80 / K610i) had no problems at all, and both always showed full signal
strength. However, with the K770i the signal strength was extremely
variable, and on some occasions almost lost the 3G signal altogether.
At my workplace both the N80 / K610i showed the 3G signal strength as
average, and worked very well for both voice and data. But the K770i
really struggled to hold the 3G signal and would always revert back
to 2G whenever I tried to make a call or use the internet. So in summary
I'd say this is a great phone for 2G networks, but totally inadequate
for any kind of 3G use. So in light of this I give this phone just 3
out of 5.

I got this phone 2 days ago and I hate it, everything is bad, it has
good memory but apart from that it's a very bad Sony ericsson phone.
However, I had the K800i before this phone I loved it, it was my best
phone ever better than the W910i although this phone got smashed thanks
to my older brother who threw it in the road and it got run over that
is why I got the K770i. I am getting a full refund for this phone and
I will definateley buy the K800i as it is 10 times better.

An excellent all-rounder. Great looks and lightweight design, long battery
life, relaible, good-quality screen and easy navigation. Lots of features.
Camera is decent but not as good as k800/810 - there's no zoom in 3mp
setting and photos can be blurred. The upside is the joystick has been
replaced by a conventional pad. So still a great phone worth buying.

Its a nice looking phone does the job in making recieving calls, but
beware when taking photos as you really have to have a steady hand when
you point and shoot. The auto focus is NOT optical (unlike the K750i)
but instead it is digital so therefore it is prone to the slightest
of camera shake. Its a shame as it can take some decent pics..

An excellent looking phone with all the features that I wanted BUT NOT
DURABLE! I had a problem with the first phone not connecting to my PC.
The bottom row of buttons on the key pad on the replacements developed
faults like, permanently being pushed in or the back light not working,
and the final replacement developed a problem with the screen. Do not
buy it if you intend to keep it in your trouser pocket, otherwise brilliant.

was that all music had to be changed into MP3 format, with this phone,
you can put even WMA files on which is great. Toutchpad instead of joystick
is great idea, works really well. This phone is now just £99 on T-Mobile,
highly recomended instead of saving a tenner and getting the really

Lovely phone. Excellent battery life as with all sony ericssons, brilliant
screen, nice and slim design too, feels rigid. I bought this having
owned a K750i for over two years and so far so good I'm pleased. I'm
not particularly bothered about the xenon light, clear and crisp sounding
speaker too. Text messages I receive and send go really fast (so it
isn't the phone) and it has never switched off once. The only really
downside I can think of is to do with the camera. You can't zoom with
in full 3megapixels, you have to change it to vga in the option. And
where is the option for night mode when taking pictures? Only when shooting
video unfortuantely...

I went from the k810i which was brilliant, just a tad bulky. Looks wise,
the K770i wins hands down, looks & feels lovely, buttons so easy to
use, especially if your a fast texter, and very colourfull screen. shame
about the flash not being xeon, and I was dissapointed with the photos
a little, certainly not as good as k810i, a little darker and I missed
the zoom, although you do get it on another setting. On computer, the
photos were ok, you just have to be extra carefull when taking them,
as unsteady hand shows easy, but if you get it right, the photo will
be fine. I did change mine to a Nokia N95...which takes superb pics
and is very easy to use, but thats another review...I still have that,
but for some reason I'm being drawn back to the K770i! I think its because
it was so compact, easyto use, looked good, great battery life, lots
smaller and at the end of the day good enough pics for daily snapping,
and if you want really good pics, just take along your digi cam! I agree
with another reviewer, it would be IDEAL to have the K810i or K800 in
the K770i body. Thus the 4 stars.

Great looking phone and features, but it's totally messed up. Mine goes
into standby and the screen never wakes up again so switch off and on
and when screen goes on standby again it's the same story. It also disconnected
a call I was making to get the phone replaced, froze completely and
when I restarted it insisted that there was no sim on the phone. It
was also upsetting that this phone has a light as opposed to a proper
flash, couldn't find anything about setting it to flash in the manual.
If the replacement works, does anyone know how to do this?

Sony Ericsson in my opinion make the best phones, however, I think when
I upgraded to this phone I got the one that has problems... the problems
I have encountered are: Signal dropping out all the time. Battery life
poor. Screen goes black when going in to the menu or in the middle of
texting. When I receive an MMS I have to switch the phone off and back
on to view it (weird I know!) Text messages taking hours to arrive through
(this may be a network fault but when i rang my provider they said it
was the phone). Other than the above I love the style of the phone and
only wish Sony had put a proper flash on it instead of the stupid light
that makes everything white. I am not here to slag the phone off because
I may have a fault one but I am sending this back, not sure what I am
going to replace with as the K850i doesn't sound too good!!

i have got to be honest, it isnt the best phone. I compared the K800i
and This one, the k770i and the K800i came out the best. The camera
on the k770i is x3 optical zoom and the k800i is x16. It is rediculusly
over-priced when you might as well just buy the K800i for 80 punds instead
of 200 pounds for a rubbish phone. It has a good screen but i go with
the K800i.

I have no quarrels with this phone as of yet, it's really easy to use,
loving the camera (i'm not too bothered about the quality of the flash
or w/e) as long as it takes decent pics thats fine with me. The sound
quality is superb, really loud at it's loudest. Nice, slim design. Battery
life is good (compared to my previous phones anyway). I'm not particularly
bothered by the poor video quality, i'm a film student, and i have a
camcorder for my filming needs so the video on the phone isn't really
a problem for me. And also the keypad is acceptable for blokes to use,
simply they're big enough! Quite a nice little phone i say.

Most of you are making a huge mistake when reviewing this phone. THIS
IS NOT THE REPLACEMENT OF THE K800! Dont treat it like it is. The k800
is a different class of cybershot phone--THIS IS A NEW MIDDLE RANGED
CYBERSHOT PHONE! This is a slim cybershot phone which is in the same
class of the k750 (in fact it is the replacement of the k750). That
explains the lack of the xenon flash and marginally better picture quality
(which is debatable) in comparison to k800. Have had the phone for a
few days now... PROS: Great battery life Great resolution screen and
much better under direct sunlight Great navigational system (no more
joystick!!!) Good camera Great keypad (nicely spaced for speedy texting)
Slick desgin Nice size (not bulky) 3G which enables video calls Up to
2GB expandable memory Music player and radio CONS: Bad video recording
mode (bad resolution) No xenon flash (because it is not a top range
cybershot phone....it is the middle solution at a great price) Thanks
for reading....

I have just got this phone on Vodafone. Coming from a K800i, I was interested
if the K770i would be a good replacement as I didn't fancy the K850i
with it's really small keypad. The dimensions of the K7 is more or less
the same as the K8, although its a lot slimmer. Gone is the bulky lens
cover on the K8 that was vunerable to opening in your pockets, on the
K7 is is replaced by a chic looking brushed metal cover. Both screen
sizes are the same and the resolution is similar. The keypad layout
on the K7 is more open, and there is a nice tactile feel to each key
press. Gone also is the SE trademark navigation joystick, replaced by
a conventional navi pad- personally I found this to be a step in the
right direction as the joystick was prone to sticking. The outer casing
seems to be well put together, however time will tell as my K8 suffers
from creaking noises. The truffle brown colour works very well, and
looks stylish. The chrome trim that runs around the whole phone is a
nice touch. Software wise, there seems to be hardly any difference,
the K8 user will feel straight at home with the K7. Sound quality is
on par wit hte K8 So far so good, but there are a couple of things were
the K7 falls short on, as mentioned there is no xenon flash, no zoom
feature in camera mode (even if it did, probably unusable anyway given
low light flash and camera shake). No infarred port (for those who still
uses it), no one touch music player button. Rear cover needs to removed
if you want to swap memory card. The menu graphcs aren't as nice as
the K8 (a good choice of display theme may cure this). Smaller internal
memory- although a 256mb card is supplied with the K7, whereas I had
to buy my own for the K8. Overall, the K7 is a well built and stylish
phone, as a package- camera & phone, the K8 is still the better phone.
But for those who want a no nonsense mobile phone, this fits the bill
perfectly, the K7 will still take pictures, but not as good as ones
taken by a K8. Overall I am happy with the K7 as I do not need the better
camera capability (and bulk). For usability, comfort, style and build
the K7 is a tough one to beat. I really think if Sony had made a K800i/850i
with this design/shell, it would of been one of the best phones to date.
