Sony Ericsson K660i review

 Review: May 2008

Last updated January 2009

Rating: 2 stars

In a nutshell: A lightweight 3G phone with a classic design and a broad range of features.

Review

Honestly this is just another clone phone from Sony Ericsson, who are becoming rather lazy churning out nearly identical mid-range 3G phones. Available in Wine & Black, Lime & White, Cyan & Black or Silver & Black. Very similar in design and specification to the K530i, K630i, K770i, and W660i, this one loses points for having a naff keypad, poor battery life and a mediocre camera.

Hello, i just want to say to all the bad reviews, i've had this phone a month, but before that it had been used by my brother for a year and a half and its still in great condition. I believe not all of you are 100% careful but obviously there are faults with this phone because so many people are having trouble.. its 50/50 here all in all, i wouldn't reccommend this phone if your willing to pay an extra 10 or so because there are so many better ones even on second hand for the same price. by that i'm referring to the camera and the dodgy keys that were hard to get used to.

I had this phone for atleat 3 years. This was my very first upgraded phone! The only thing that is "annoying"(for some) is the constant freezing/black screen of the phone; the most obvious solution is to remove the battery and place it back in. The camera is only 2MP but it is much better compared to *some nokia phones with 2MP because the quality is good when the surrounding is well lit, unfortunately it doesnt come with a flash to get that better quality when in the dark. I have also noticed the keypad, especially when I'm in a hurry and I need to send someone a message, so sadly I cannot type well on those tiny buttons. There are a lot of apps outthere that support different application like docs, pdf viewers, and such so it is pretty much useful. I dont mind about the battery life, but I know mine only lasts for a day if I put it on silent. The constant charging gets pretty irritating, however. Internet is okay, but I prefer wi-fi because it's free. :-p Oh yeah, the audio quality is also good; I only use mine for alarms. XD Lastly, I guess this phone is such a basic phone that it comes with all my basic needs. If you plan on buying this, an upgraded version or a more capable brand will be available in the market anyway. For me, I guess I had a great time using this phone; I don't mind the problems here, I'm used to them! 3 YEARS, HUH?

Well I've had this phone since August '09, on an 18 month contract and MY GOD am I happy to be getting a new one in a few months. I'd like to say that it was reliable, but it really wasn't. The disconnect key stopped working and I got it repaired, (for free. yay) but there are recurring problems such as freezing and crashing. The design is okay, but the quality of the make is terrible. It feels like it could fall apart at any moment, and the low quality plastic wears away easily. There are numerous scratches on the screen and the casing, with the battery cover weakening each day. The music player is terrible; you need to use sony ericsson earphones (which are terrible) and it makes the phone slowly grind to a halt. The internet browsing is acceptable for things such as facebook mobile and twitter mobile, but any proper web pages refuse to load. The camera is appalling - 2mp, having to grade down to vga to film or zoom. However, I do like the little button that brings up a pop up menu... and a few of the games are okay. The texting is reliable, but the calling is not. Hopefully this is taken off the market now. If you do see it and get tempted, I beg you not to buy it.

I love this little phone, it's so pretty and practical. I'm used to Sony Ericcson so I know how they work so it took no time to get used to it. I also prefer these round buttons to the thin rectangular ones a lot of phones have now- they're easy to press. Problems: I have also had problems after just 9 months of use with the phone going dead where you have to remove the battery to restart. The earpiece stopped working for a while so I always had to have it on speaker phone which was very embarassing, the T9 mode forgets words and doesn't have some very basic words in the dictionary.... The camera is poor and the battery life struggles if you use it for anything apart from calls and text (i.e music or games). The memory is pretty small too. It's a real shame as I'm looking to upgrade and if this phone worked better I'd either a)keep it or b)replace like for like, but I'm not sure it's worth the risk! This is almost the perfect phone!

Poor reception - Emergency Calls Only is a familiar welcome with the K660i. Poor call quality via bluetooth and creaks like mad hand held. Battery is no worse than my previous 3G phones. Needs a factory reset every few months to stop it locking up and/or rebooting. The charge/headphone connection is the worst design in the world. I can't make it update the firmware using my Sony Vaio laptop - comes up with some "stupid message" (true technical term - I am an IT expert). It's shame about these snags because it's a really neat phone with some decent features.

It is an easy phone to use and I have had no problems with paint peeling off, I've found the keypad ok and it is still an attractive phone. However, over the past 6 months or so it has become increasingly unreliable. It freezes up, the screen goes black or it drops calls and the battery life has decreased significantly. I am quite disappointed as I have always bought Sony Ericsson mobiles and never had technical problems in the past. The mobile has been away for repair once for the same problems but improvements didn't last long. I am fed up of repeatedly taking out the battery and sim card and quite often it doesn't start up again in any case... Very frustrating!

The software is very, very similar to a K800 and that got top reviews. The only real difference is the slim body and lower quality camera as the cost (and extra Skype support the K800 didn't have +mouse pointer on the web). I can't see why this is rated lower here, as these are the only real differences. [Editor's comment: Are you kidding? The phones are very different. Look at the camera! Look at the keypad!] In fact I copied my k800 themes over. On 3, this was 100% stable. Since moving to Orange it did lock up a few times. It turns out the settings they sent were to blame as they don't directly support a K660i and i got K600i settings :-(. If you delete all these settings and send the k800i ones from the FAQ section on their site (MMS and internet), it won't freeze again. I just got one for my wife in a different colour. These knock out around 60 now. I find it very good on signal strength. Often people visit my house and can't get an Orange signal but I can (worst being my Mum's Samsung). I wanted a longer life battery so got a third party one and get about 10% more which is 2-3 days with a few hours of calls and odd texting. I'd prefer longer and this is the only down side. Using 2 batteries is the solution, leaving one in your bag for backup if you are out and about. But 3 days is not that bad.

I had a number of problems with my previous phone freezing all the time and needing numerous software upgrades. When I went to the shop and all I asked for was a reliable phone - I didn't care how many pixels the camera had or what the game features were like, I just wanted to be able to make calls and send texts. I was assured by the sales assistant that because the K660i was a pretty simple phone (not particularly impressive camera or music function) it would work fine. The phone has been a complete and utter let down. It freezes constantly requiring me to remove and reinsert the battery to be able to turn the phone on again, it turns off for no reason, needs charging most days (even though the one thing it was supposed to do well was have a long battery life), it switches to Emergency calls only frequently, again requiring it to be turned off and on. The small keys aren't a problem as I saw the size of the phone before I bought it, however the fact that not a day passe s without something going wrong with it is a problem. I would advise anyone thinking about buying this phone to consider it carefully. It's incredibly frustrating.

I got this phone April last year on 3, and all in all I've found it a really poor phone. The camera isn't the best, the battery life just doesn't last and I'm finding myself charging it sometimes around twice a day, it freezes ALL the time and deletes my stuff. The speakers are alright but I really really regret getting this phone. I've sent it into repair twice and nothing has been resolved. My opinion, don't buy it.

Great phone to start with, however, having it had it for going on a year now, it freezes quite often, which at first was a niggle, now just plain annoying. I have it on 3 but will be glad for my upgrade to come in a few months time. Good points are a super internet connection and a lot of very useful features. Not as bad a phone as two stars would suggest, but a hefty feature count a great phone doesn't make.

Fantastic phone! Now i have a VERY bad habit of dropping my phones (no i am not very proud of it) but this phone can actually handle quite alot! The only reason I am changing is because it has startet to go funny from all the bumps. But otherwise it is a fantastic phone, good quality sound (both through the speakers and through the headset), really easy to use and it looks really good. Well spent money!! (just keep it in a safe place where it dose not fall to often)

Got this k660i from 3 network today. It's alright and am getting used to it. It's one intelligent and a lot featured phone which is nice. Only problem as of the moment is the pre-installed games where you are allowed to play once then a "rent/buy" option is always popping up. No option to delete it as well which is really annoying. Apart from that, all is good.

My advice to the complainers, try not to break it next time or trade it in for a zimmer frame or maybe go back to school as your obviously too old or stupid to work it!

Rubbish phone, complete and utter rubbish. In the end, i scrapped it and went for a Blackberry Bold, which is much better. The buttons on the Sony fell off completly in the end, it froze so much it wouldn't stop freezing, so once every 10 minutes in the end it froze, and even the insurance couldn't fix it! The camera didn't want to open, ever, and the music is fluffed up, but maybe that was the insurance's fault, as it was fine before I sent it to them? Cyan on Black are gorgeous colours together, shame it's a cruddy phone.

I recently got the cyan on black version. I am happy with how it looks, and have not found the keypad fiddly, maybe because I am a girl with smaller fingers! I have also heard the cyan on black described as more of a boys phone, I don't think so at all. I love blue which is why I picked this one, however I think the lime on white one looks cool too. I have to say the earphones are a bit ugly and I am not going to use them. I previously had sony ericsson phone, a slightly more expensie one which cost 134.99. I became fed up with how it looked but functionally it was better. The K660i is a much simpler design which is why it is cheaper- however I have seen it overpriced at 140 in some Christmas catalogues. The battery runs out on mine very quick, and takes longer to charge up. It doesn't have some of the features my old phone had such as a light, which I found useful. Like I say it is a simple design.

well, one thing's for sure; this phone is not for idiots. TO SOLVE RESTARTS: there's a very very helpful site called SOny Ericsson.com that lets you download another software called Update Service for free. What it does is (when downloaded) is update the firmware of your phone with the latest firmware version, where majority of the bugs like restarts are already taken care of. It says on the Sony Ericsson site (as in clearly stated) that if you experience restarts, the best thing to do (and should be the first) is to update your firmware. Unfortunately and funny enough, majority of users don't know that, because even though they can access the Internet, they don't know how to use it properly and maximize the millions of information scattered all over it. THIS PHONE is underestimated. Period. It's not meant for insatiable consumers, but for users who have lots of common sense and knows want they want from a phone and chooses wisely.

for me, i am happy with it.. i dont mind the camera because i dont use it frequently, but 2 mp is not bad at all... its still very clearly specially when outside.... love the mp3 but its no that loud, better with a headset but still not that loud but music quality is great, love the style as well as it looks so expensive and features are high tech for me specially browsing music and photos... batery, is just fine , just having a hard time beacause u have to maintain to clean it as it was a glossy phone but its alright i love cleaning my things because it reflects me...sms is also great, not like other phones that u have to browse and look for ur friends or important text messages, because for example if ur friends texted u a lot of times, they have their folders, all there text messages will be in one file only not being scattered all over ur inbox so u will not have a hard time to look for the sms that u nid to read again.. over all, i love this phone and so far im contented with it... i still cant use the internet because my network still dont have the settings for this phone but its ok, i can wait... keypad is not hard to use, actually people who is just stupid to type or maybe SLOW to type are those who hate it... for me, its very accesible.... no problem with it.. cheers

I have had this phone for 3 months and have gave up now. I use to have the W850i which was a brill phone and so that's why I stuck with Sony Ericsson. But lets go back to this phone, the key pad is one thing where any time I want to scroll down I always press the 2 on the key pad, the music player keeps pausing, the reception for some reason is veer bad compared to my other phone (haven't changed network) and my phone keeps turning off the alarms that I have set and keeps changing the time on the clock (woke me up at 4am instead of 7am and I take some tablets at 9am and 9pm and had turned of the reminder alarm VERY POOR)

thinks that those who doesn't like this phone should just sell it and get a new one. :) I mean, why complain and put up with it when you can just go back or search the internet THOROUGHLY for the perfect phone for you? That's why there're reviews like this, so that if you're so picky with phones you won't be criticizing phone models that prolly weren't meant for you in the first place? :) @we the keypad didn't deceive you. it's been round even before you bought it. you prolly have big fingers, so it hurts. you should've had enough sense to realize that the round buttons won't be too convenient for you before you paid for it. get a phone with giant keypad!! @collin yeah, not the phone's fault. the specifications for this phone is shown in detail in the sony ericsson site. you should've read that. Blimey, sales clerks aren't all techy people, so they prolly don't know much about a phone's features. if you want a super phone, go get yourself a more expensive one! dunno bout you guys, but I think the faulty phones usually fall in the hands of users who don't know the first thing there is to know about proper use and maintenance.
