Sony Ericsson K608i review

 Review: October 2005

Last updated January 2009

In a nutshell: A slimline 3G phone.

The Sony Ericsson K608i is nearly identical to the Sony Ericsson K600i, except that it's available on the 3 network. It's a 3G phone that supports all 3's video mobile services: video calling, video messaging & downloading video clips. It's a decent but not outstanding 3G phone, and is the first Sony Ericsson phone available on the 3 network.

Looking at the phone, you wouldn't guess that it was 3G. It's a classically styled handset with a silver aluminium casing, and weighs just 100g. The keypad and joystick are not the easiest to use however, in fact they're quite fiddly especially if you have large hands.

The 1.3 megapixel camera is good, with a photo light and a 4x digital zoom. The video recorder is also of high quality, and the VideoDJ™ application lets you combine video clips and add music and sound effects to make your own videos. The display is a large 262k colour screen and once again is of excellent quality. The phone comes with a media player (MP3 and videos), a sound recorder and an FM radio. You can compose your own polyphonic ringtones or download tones via 3G.

Connectivity is excellent, with a choice of Bluetooth, USB and infrared for data transfer. The K608i supports email messaging, and also offers multitasking, an excellent phonebook, a built-in speakerphone and voice commands. The memory is reasonable at 33 Mbytes (enough for most users, but inadequate if your hoping for a phone to replace your MP3 player!). As 3G phones go, the battery life of the K608i is excellent.

Apart from the fiddly keypad and the lack of a memory card, the other problems with the K608i are poor audio quality and quiet ringtones. It's an OK phone, but not the best 3G phone around.

Sony Ericsson K608i features include:

  • 1.3 megapixel camera with picture editor, photo light and 4x digital zoom
  • Video camera & sound recorder
  • Display: 176 x 220 pixels, 262,144 colours
  • 3G video calling
  • MP3 player
  • FM radio
  • Speakerphone
  • Polyphonic ringtones
  • MusicDJ™ (MIDI ringtone composer)
  • Voice commands
  • Messaging: SMS, EMS, MMS, email
  • Java games (downloadable & embedded - Vijay Singh Pro Golf 2005)
  • Wallpaper & screensavers
  • Picture phonebook
  • Personal organiser functions
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB, Infrared, SyncML
  • WAP 2.0, GPRS, HSCSD
  • Memory: 33 Mbytes
  • Vibration alert
  • Triband + 3G (UMTS)
  • Size: 104 x 45 x 19 mm
  • Weight: 100g
  • Talktime: 8 hours (2G), 2 hours (3G)
  • Video calling: 1.67 hours
  • Battery standby: 370 hours (2G), 290 hours (3G)

This was my 1st 3G phone, replacing a much loved white SE T630, both of which I still have. I really loved the retro look of the K608i. In my mind it's still one of the very best looking of all SE phones (a high accolade indeed given such beauties as the T610, T630, Elm, etc.) with its slick silver case (btw it's not aluminium but is actually well painted plastic), and very sophisticated look for its time with multiple buttons and camera lenses and various windows/holes. I liked the nifty camera lens cover, and locking battery cover, and the overall high quality feel and perfect weight in the hand. It had the usual excellent SE phone interface, and a more than decent (for its time) 1.3MP camera and front facing camera for 3G video calling - both of which were good quality. My only gripes I remember were the small memory that limited its use as an MP3 player, and the '3' branding. All in all an excellent 3G phone that I replaced later with its successor an inferior - despite its memory card capability - dark grey SE K610i.
This was also by far the smallest 3G mobile phone at the time, which in those days were like bricks...

I have had numerous phones as I am notorious for breaking them, but this is by far the best phone i've ever had. Cannot get hold of a replacement which i'm upset about. Had mine repaired numerous times, and prefer this to upgrades. Got the new nokia now and hate the thing. It as an attitude problem. The ericsson was cute, discrete and did what you wanted it to do. Ok it wasn't all mod cons, but when you have a phone that does what you want, you don't need them. miss you lots. RIP.

i had my fone for about a year and its an ok phone does the job. i neva had any problems with the navigation key quite simple to use and writing texts was easy.the phone is quite durable too ive dropped it that many times and its still strong as ever. the only problems with this phone is the size of it, it is quite bulky compared to sum of the other sony erricsons but still a good phone and a let down is the memory size its a shame that you cnat add a memory card as there is no memory card slot. A exceelent point bout this phone is that it has bluetooth,infra-red and sync not many phones have all three. all in all a good phone!!! ('',)

The Sony Ericsson K608i is a nice phone But on 3 network you can't turn off the voicemail, You can delete the number so you can't access any messages that people have left but everytime you switch your mobile off if someone calls you they will be charged just to here the recorded message even if they dont leave a message which on Pay and Go can be anoying other than that the ring tones arn't that loud and if you are a little hard of hearing even in Outside profile you will have a job to hear the phone when it's in your pocket.

If you are often in noisy places, get something different. Ladies, if it's in your handbag pushed under a table, you won't hear it ring if there is background noise. Other than that, its fine.
