Sony Ericsson K600i Review
Phone rating:
Original review: October 2005. Last updated March 2009.
The Sony Ericsson K600i is a 3G phone offering the full range of 3G
services, including video calling, video and audio streaming and high
speed internet access. It's a well-specified 3G phone with a 1.3 megapixel
camera, 262k colour screen, Bluetooth wireless connectivity and bonus
features such as an FM radio.
The K600i is available in an aluminium silver casing. It's a smart
looking phone, although the keypad and joystick can be quite fiddly
to use. Looking at it, you'd never even guess that it was a 3G phone,
as it's compact and super-slim, with classic good looks.
The camera is excellent, incorporating a photo light and a 4x digital
zoom. The video recorder is also of high quality, and the VideoDJ
application lets you combine video clips and add music and sound effects
to make your own videos. The display is a large 262k colour screen and
once again is of excellent quality. The phone comes with a media player
(MP3 and videos), a sound recorder and an FM radio. You can compose
your own polyphonic ringtones or download tones via 3G.
The K600i is a capable business phone. In addition to the full range
of messaging options, including email, there are extra features such
as multitasking, an excellent phonebook, a built-in speakerphone and
voice commands.
Battery life is excellent for a 3G phone, and switching to 2G will
give even greater performance.
The phone's memory stands at 33 Mbytes, which is adequate, but an extra
memory card would have been the icing on the cake and would have made
the phone even more useful.
The main downside is the fiddly keypad. The audio quality is also not
up to Sony Ericsson's usual quality. However, all things considered,
it's a good 3G phone and one that should appeal even to those not necessarily
interested in the advanced 3G functionality. The Sony
Ericsson K608i is the same phone, but is available on the 3 network.
The Sony Ericsson V600i is very
similar, except that it has an improved keypad, and is available on
Vodafone.
Features of the Sony Ericsson K600i include:
- 1.3 megapixel camera with picture editor, photo light and 4x digital
zoom
- Video camera & sound recorder
- Display: 176 x 220 pixels, 262,144 colours
- 3G video calling
- MP3 player
- FM radio
- Speakerphone
- Polyphonic ringtones
- MusicDJ (MIDI ringtone composer)
- Voice commands
- Messaging: SMS, EMS, MMS, email
- Java games (downloadable & embedded - Vijay Singh Pro Golf 2005)
- Wallpaper & screensavers
- Picture phonebook
- Personal organiser functions
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB, Infrared, SyncML
- WAP 2.0, GPRS, HSCSD
- Memory: 33 Mbytes
- Vibration alert
- Triband + 3G (UMTS)
- Size: 104 x 45 x 19 mm
- Weight: 100g
- Talktime: 8 hours (2G), 2 hours (3G)
- Video calling: 1.67 hours
- Battery standby: 370 hours (2G), 290 hours (3G)

if you clean it. the screen size is good and the keypad is fine. the
txting isnt slow and it does have good batery there's only one small

1. First, the biggest problem...the lack of a memory card expansion.
It pretty much defeats the whole idea of a 3G multimedia phone. There's
not much you can store in 33 megabytes. Let's face it, as long as older
phones include a memory card by default, SonyE has bright idea to leave
it out, justifying the decision saying that they didn't want to compromise
the sleek look. Come on, like how thick can a mmc card get :) 2. Second...battery
life. About half of the official specs, if you actually use the phone,
not just keep it as a toy. 3. Camera delay. If you use the maximum resolution
setting, there is a maximum of 1 second delay from pushing the button
to actually taking the shot. Pretty annoying sometimes. 4. Keys. Design-wise
its a good idea to hide the keys, but for somebody with big hands, writing
a sms gets ****evil***. Good points Nice all around design, acceptable
camera quality, fine fm radio, nice media player *if you have the space
for it*. Well configured, bluetooth setup is hassle-free, compared to
other present generation phones. Browser is pretty standard, altough
I do recommend using a 3-rd party software, like mini-opera. Bottom
line: Good all around phone, reliable. If SonyE would find a way to
get around the memory issue...

is the battery life...but in general its the phone I hope will last...for
a 3g phone this is the cheapest.

An excellent phone with lots of features and still pretaining the likes
of a candy bar, an eye-catching phone and easy to use. Just a lack of
storage that annoys me. But for all, it is an all rounder in perfection.
If the MP3 is too big, just convert it into RealPlayer format with about
the same quality but less space usage. It will fit almost 28 songs in
it (without saving any pictures, videos and some ringtones etc.) Besides
that, it has a radio as an alternative hearing gadgets to get you going.
The camera is ok, but if added features such as autofocus would be better.
I have been printed the pictures and they look nice. I LOVE MY K600i!

It works well and is well built but it boasts an MP3 player but with
only 33Mb it hardly is!!! Also the reception is pathetic, I often have
no signal or even no network when I'm with people on the same network,
but different phones, and they have full signal. Also the joystick works
badly and eventually fills with dust and ceases to work; meaning I have
to use the numbers to navigate!! it's a good, well built phone but the
small details annoy me. The 3G is ace though!!

This phone is great. Ive just glanced through the reviews and only read
the ones with the lowest rating. For the person who thinks that there
is only short video - NOT TRUE, that is you laziness and not reading
the manual if you cant figure it out yourself. You see, the 12 second
video is made for mms sending, because it isnt too big. But you can
easily set the quality to high and you can record a video even 20 minutes
long, including zooming while recording. And to the person with signal
problems.. I know a few people who have this phone, no one has problems
with this. And the battery life is connected with it, since the phone
struggles to connect to the operator you have and that drains the battery
fast.

built, well finished and packed with all features i want. If i want
a great camera, I would go and buy a camera and not a phone, like wise
for a Mp 3 player. So in a phone, the features they have packed is quite
adequate and that too easy to use.

I am now on the 3rd version of this phone. I have had nothing but problems.
The reception is terrible - I can be sitting next to a friend who is
on the same network as me, but has a Nokia phone, and he has 3 or 4
bars of reception; I have none! This is a regular problem. Other times
there will be reception bars showing on the phone but there is "no access
to the network" - once again a friend on the same network but with a
different phone has got reception and a network. The battery life is
very poor and seems inconsistent. And the phone doesn't seem to want
to turn on sometimes - this has been an issue with all 3 versions of
this phone which I have had in my posession. I was originally with Vodafone
and I had problems with a number of different Sony Ericsson phones -
I thought it was the Vodafone software. But I have recently switched
to another network provider and the problems still exist with the Sony
Ericsson phones. What are they doing to them??!!

I'd say if you want more memory then go for the high-end models with
memory card expandability. Personally, I think this phone is the best
bang for the buck...you get video-calling, 1.3M-pixel camera, FM radio,
mp3 ringtones, bluetooth etc. I've owned Nokia before phones and my
last was the Nokia 6600. But the Sony Ericsson's K600i speaker is much
better than the 6600 (you could hardly hear the mp3 ringtones with Nokia
6600). What can I say, I like the phone and if I wanted more space for
my mp3, I'd rather go get an iPod or Creative Zen series. I find it
a bit of an overkill that a phone should be a "be-all" gadget...simply
because if it breaks down later...you also lose you mp3 player, your
camera, etc...because you've so much relied on one gadget having all
these functions.

Just got the K600i after a series of 5 Nokias. Good looking phone. Things
are all pretty there. However, the camera (1.3 megapixel) is not really
good. Pictures taken are full of noise and blur. There's no extra slot
for memory card, so the music function is limited. The screen is good
but rather small. And I got difficulites in texting, due to the flat
keypad (fashionable, but less useable!). The UI of SE phone is also
less friendly compared to Nokia ones, but I'll try to get use with it
soon. Besides that, the Radio, the sound quality and the connection

As it was a free phone upgrade I can't ompare a value but the K600i
is simply superb. Reading most of the downside reviews I found most
to be Ok ie 8 second video - (read the book and you can have much longer)
Image quality very good not outstanding but very good for 1.3MP Burst
mode great for actin shots Panorama simple to use great results. MP3
player very good but not for the music lovers with only 33MB ram. One
way around this is to download the Nokia Media converter and convert
your MP3's to much smaller size and get more fitted on your K600i :)
Internet very quick and easy to navigate. text messageing agree fiddly
keys if you have large fingers if not it's easy to use. Shortcut button
on the right hand side is a great idea and works really well. Overall
out of 10 I would give it 9 as anything can always be improved but if
you are looking for an upgrade to 3G this is worth looking at. easy
bluetooth download to pc makes it simple to put your pics ready for
printing. Video DJ - Music DJ Photo DJ are fun to use and work really
well. Media Player great fun. great games Vijay Singh golf works really
well for a phone game good graphics. This is a very useful phone - great
signal even in the car (handsfree) Very good organiser (plus). I use
the recorder a lot and it is easy to use with loud playback with a great
pickup. Neat and slim great looking but watch you don't scratch the
screen no cover so no coins in the pocket. Some say poor ring volume

We recently got a K600i on the O2 network as an upgrade for the wife.
Key requirements were Bluetooth for headset/handsfree use and 3G as
there is little point carrying on with 2G for another contract year
(other family phones are all 3G, this was the last). We read up on the
K600i BEFORE accepting the upgrade so knew what to expect in terms of
features/design. Initial impressions of the handset were favourable
- compact size, attractive design, functional buttons, excellent and
intuitive SE menus and accompanying help. Setting up was a snap, within
a few minutes it was customised for use. Sound quality is superb - as
was the volume for ringtone that some complain about on here (I suspect
they have faulty handsets and should get them serviced/replaced). Bluetooth
functions perfectly, limited by the functionality of the headset and
not the phone (headset but no handsfree!). Keypad is initially fiddly
to get used to, but it did not take long. We don't use T9 and that has
been no issue either. The camera is good quality and works well. Memory
size is fixed and limited - this is not a handset for the big MP3 user.
But the FM radio does go some way to making up for this. The only gripe
that I have a the moment is the K600i's use of 3G - we have a transmitter
mast fairly near us (within 200m) but it insists on dropping to 2G regularly.
We are investigating this with O2 as it is most likely not a handset
issue, but it is irritating nonetheless. Outside of the house the K600i
holds on to 3G signals much better - but again, O2's 3G network is by
no means ubiquitous yet (35% cover the last time I read). So all in
all, a four star rating because of the 3G/2G issues but in all other
respects the K600i comes highly recommended from me.

is good in reception. Camera is good too and almost offer range of options
that a digicam will do. The screen and memory could have been bigger
and this fone would have been a killer at the price point. But you cant
get a merc at a price of a ford. I like this. The K610i is even more
interesting !!!

Overall this is a very good phone. Great design, packed with pretty
good features as along Sony Ercisson can do. My only gripes with the
phone are the camera quality could have been better...not sure why the
camera in either the k750i or even the s700i wasn't used. Also, as cool
as the design is, for people with larger hands and who grip their phone
firmly when using it, the edges does feel slightly uncomfortable after
a while. Still, I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a solid phone with
good all-around features.

This phone is absolutely fantastic! Was a little unsure after reading
other negative reviews, but i risked it and it was so worth it. Cost
99 quid and was blown away by how great it was. Really good features,
Radio is crystal clear, camera is very good as is the video clip function.
Never had a problem with the 3G, have'nt used it often yet though. Ringtone
was low to being with, but i turned up the volume and it is fine (a
lot louder if you leave it on it's back with the speaker shown). Talking
is perfectly clear, all the additions (being able to assign ringtones
to certain contacts etc) are really excellent. It looks lovely - and
is lovely. Anyone considering getting a phone in this price range the

The problem is I traded my previous phone for this because I needed
automatic bluetooth connection. The K600i is useless for this, it seems
to work at random but mostly not at all resulting in the phone freezing

radio, mp3, sufficient RAM, perfect screen, perfect camera! It is simply
the best companion to my perfect PDA: the Fujitsu-Siemens LOOX 720!
As for these guys who faced problems with the low volume, simply try
the volume buttons on the left side of the phone while playing a ring
tone to bring the volume up! Oh, and it has speakerphone, very very
handy if you are driving. No need for ANY kind of crappy earphone...
Why bother with other phones... get this one and make sure it is unlocked

For the money, this phone packs a decent number of features including
3G support and mp3 player. It's relatively light in weight, if a little
bulky, and the screen is of a good quality. The 1.3 megapixel camera
also gives more than acceptable shots, providing of course you're in
a well-lit environment. If not, you'll end up with lots of 'noise' on
your images, even with the built in light active (although this is a
complaint that can be levelled at almost every camera phone). There
are two major downsides to this phone. The first is the quietness of
its inbuilt speaker. Even on the highest volume you'll most probably
miss a few calls - who on earth thought putting a (weak) speaker on
the back of the phone was a good idea? The vibration function is also
rather 'weedy' - if you're walking down a busy street with the phone
in your pocket, you'll be hard pressed to notice when you've received
a text, or if someone's trying to call you. The second is the speed
of the processor. I use predictive text and often have to wait for the
processor to catch up with my input. The impreciseness of the joystick
compounds this problem, requiring slow and deliberate movements to register
your presses. For those who like to text quickly, this very quickly
becomes a massive pain. In brief summary, if you don't use your phone
for texting a great deal and have way above average hearing capabilities,
this phone will probably suit you down to the ground. For the rest of
us, it's probably a "try before you buy" situation. Me? I'll stick with
it, but will think very long and hard before choosing another Sony Ericsson.

I got the Sony Ericsson K600i 10 days ago and I'm very happy with it.
But let's go straight to the weak points of the phone. First, there
is no memory card, so it won't really serve you as a portable mp3 player
unless your music library is really really concise. On the other hand,
it comes with an excellent built-in radio which surely is my favourite
tool up to now. Second, if you are a typing person, you might struggle
with the keypad. I can't really tell because I never was. Thinking in
other phones I had, I even enjoy typing with the K600i because its keys
are very precise. I'd say battery live is comparable to an avarage 2G
phone. But you certainly can finish up the battery quite fast using
all the fancy tools the phone has. Speaking quality is excellent, reception
very good and I am really happy with the screen. Bluetooth and 3G is
working completely smooth. And for the first time a mobile does not
look like a toy to me. The finishing quality is just incredible... it
is the "AUDI" in the mobile world. I love it!

I have just received this phone, and it has to be one of the best I
have used. The features are well laid out, the software seems relatively
fast and it is a joy to use. I particularly like the feature whereby
you can get information on a feature before you use it, so no longer
are you thinking "I wonder what that thing does" you press the button
marked "info" which appears as a "soft-button" every so often and it
will tell you. The camera seems to be quite good with both indoor and
outdoor shots, and produces very good results (for a mobile camera).
I partly agree with other users who say the buttons can be a little
fiddly, but providing you dont have fingers comparable to sausages this
should not prove to be too difficult to master after a couple of days.
The only problem I have had with it so far, and albeit a minor one -
was syncing it with my PC. After about 2 hours of fannying about I got
it working. The instructions that come with the sync software are horrendous.
The user is left to guess at most of it, and find things out by trial
and error. If it helps anyone.... The phone connects through a virtual
serial port (Com 7) in the Phone Monitor settings, set Com 7 to be "enabled"
but NOT "Reserved". This was my mistake, and I got all manner of errors
up on the screen. All in all this is an excellent phone. The only downside
was the sync software, but when you get it set up, it runs beautifully
and keeps all your Outlook contacts and calender entries sync'd with
your lovely new mobile.

By far the best phone on the market at the moment. It's sleek, fast,
durable and useable. Some say the keypad is too small - I say these

Anyway - this phone is packed with fingers - I'm a high level user and
am constantly using this phone and it is great. If you don't believe
it - stick on jbenchmark and take a look at the results! Whhhoowhiii!
Now THAT is power! If you've got such huge fingers that you need an
extra large easy push dial pad on your phone then you might want to
avoid this one. Otherwise your going to love this phone...... and quite
rightly to. However I have one small issue with this phone - side buttons
annoy me. They are so easy to hit accidently, if they did this phone

Fair do's, this is a half tidy phone. Having upgraded from the superfantastic
(if over-noisy) Samsung E700 it took a little while to get used to the
smaller keypad and different interface but after a few days practice
it's almost second nature now. The camera is excellent, it certainly
looks the part, it's very easy to use and there's tons of features keep
all but the most nerdified of folk happy. A minor gripe is the texting,
not (as you might expect from comments above) because of the tiny little
keys, but the predictive texting - it throws up some very odd words
as the 1st choice, for instance try to type "MY", as in 'my phone is
great' and the phone will give you "OY" instead so you have to select
"MY" from the list - come on Sony, who uses "OY" more than "MY"?!? I've
also yet to figure out how to record more than 8 seconds of video, but
this is probably because I am a man, so have yet to read the instruction
manual! Overall, whilst I still miss my trusty old Samsung; as a change,
I'm sure this one will be just as good as a rest.

I have had to give this one star as there is no option for zero.....
So this is progress? I had been using my Nokia 6310i for as long as
possible. Seeing that poor thing was coming to the end of its life I
decided to 'upgrade'. The only function I felt I now needed extra was
3G. Could not find a phone without a camera which have TriBand. I need
access to the internet occasionally and thought that the phone could
act as a modem. So to the phone.... Advantages. It is small. er, thats
it. Disadvantages. Dire battery life, I am having to carry the charger
or a spare phone around with me in case the thing dies while I am out
at clients. Do not get tempted to use the bluetooth or the 3G unless
you have a bag load of spare batteries with you! I cannot trust the
Alarm clock as I need to leave the phone on overnight and chances are
the battery will fail! Dire call quality, Dire design, So as to place
the ear speaker to hear the thing the sharp edge digs into your ear.
There are buttons all over the place so when making a call chances are
you end up pressing either the camera button or any of the others on
the side of the 'phone' Buttons are tiny. To dial a number you have
to use your thumbnail. That tit thing in the middle used to navigate
is as accurate as a five day old carrot. The case is a delicate as filo
pastry. There is no facility for extra memory, 30 Meg on board so the
idea of MP3 or the camera is a little limited? The FM radio while in
London while stationary only found 5 stations. Although the phone dial
tones are at full volume it is more luck than judgement whether you
actually hear the thing when you are called. I did promise myself after
the experience of a T68i I would avoid Sony...but stupidly enough I
have been tempted by a function - 3G which makes the rest of the package
unusable. Thank my lucky stars I did not bin my 6310. Unfortunately
because I was away during my 14 day cooling off period, I am stuck with
the thing for the next 18 months! Serves me right!

sure whether to go for the K750i or this one. A few of my friends have
the K750i and despite its great features, I thought it just looked bit
boring, so I went for the stylish K600i. After reading the keypad was
a bit difficult to use, I tested it out in the shop before committing
myself, but I have absolutley no problem with it (I suggest u do the
same). The 262k screen is super clear. The 1.3MP camera isnt as good
as the K750i, but is still great. Video capture can be improved by changing
a setting, but to send a video message you have to use the lower quality
setting. 3G video conversations work great so long as you have a 3G
signal (not the phone's fault). I have been able to both see and hear
the other person very clearly and with very little break up. Lots of
other features work perfectly as described. It could do with more fixed
memory or a memory slot, but is not a problem for me. Battery life is
longer than my K700i due to the improved 900mah battery. Overall its
a great, stylish phone. Would give it 5* if it had more memory.

appalled at the useless keypad. And I am not exaggerating when I say
useless, you really cannot use it. It is so flat you have to press really
hard and even then you dont get that assuring click feel so you keep
pressing things twice to make sure that it worked the first time round
which half the time it does and the other half you miss. Sent it back

for missing features) Works very well as a modem and battery life isn't
bad. Video calls work very well. Built in camera is very good. Flash
is blindingly bright! RDS radio is a good feature. Good call sound quality.
Bad points: Uncomfortable to use due to a hard edge up by the ear-piece.
It actually hurts to make a long call on it! Keypad is slow to use and
you find it easy to hit multiple buttons. Buttons on either side of
the phone are easy to catch by mistake which is VERY annoying. Not having
