Sony Ericsson K550i review

 Review: May 2007

Last updated July 2009

In a nutshell: The Sony Ericsson K550i is a very good entry-level phone.

The K550i is the upgraded version of the popular K510i, but it's massively more powerful, borrowing many features from Sony Ericsson's flagship K800i Cyber-Shot phone. The camera is a 2 megapixel camera with a photo light and digital zoom, that includes the autofocus feature first found in the K800i. Instead of a fixed focus camera, with autofocus you can ensure that the subject of your photo is firmly in focus, leading to noticeably sharper images. The K550i features "picture blogging" - take a picture and send it straight to your own image blog for friends and family to view. There's also a good quality video camera.

The phone delivers on the music front too. It includes an FM radio as well as a music player. Sound quality is excellent, as you'd expect from the company that makes the top-selling Walkman range of music phones. The K550i is compatible with stereo headphones and Bluetooth wireless stereo headsets - both are available as optional accessories from Sony Ericsson. A very welcome feature is the generous amount of internal memory (64 Mbytes - enough for about a dozen songs) and the support for a Memory Stick Micro™ card, available in sizes up to 2 Gbytes. As with the Walkman phones, the K550i is equipped with two useful music features: TrackID™ & PlayNow™. TrackID lets you record a few seconds of a song, and then get the track, artist and album information sent directly to your phone. PlayNow is a service for downloading music and games to your phone (you have to pay for these.)

Available in a choice of black or white, the K550i is a compact and lightweight phone that looks very attractive (it's much less of a brick than the K800i for example). The buttons are smaller than most Sony Ericssons, but are not so difficult to use as they are well spaced out and project a millimetre or so above the surface of the phone. However, they do have a tendency to stick. The display is a good quality TFD LCD screen that retains good visibility in sunlight and is of a high resolution. At 176 x 220 pixels, it isn't as fine as the display on the K800i, but it's double the number of pixels of the K510i and is average for this price range.

Other useful features worth mentioning are the built-in speakerphone, sound recorder (for recording voices or other sounds), quadband support (for using the phone worldwide) and flight mode. There's good internet support too: EDGE for fast downloads, a web browser, and support for blogging and RSS feeds. Battery life is good.

We are impressed by the K550i. It's a great value for money phone that really offers more than it should! If only Sony Ericsson had put in a decent keypad!

Sony Ericsson K550i features include:

  • 2 megapixel camera with autofocus, 2.25x digital zoom and photo light
  • Video recording
  • Display: TFD, 262,144-colour, 176 x 220 pixels
  • Music / media player
  • FM radio

  • Speakerphone
  • Sound recorder

  • 3D Java games

  • Memory: 64 Mbytes plus Memory Stick Micro™ (M2™) support
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB mass storage, infrared
  • Web browser, RSS feeds
  • Vibration alert
  • Flight mode
  • Quadband
  • Size: 102 x 46 x 14 mm
  • Weight: 85g

I totally disagree with many of the reviews. The phone is REALLY, really good, I bought it over a year ago, and I still use it, I have dropped it numerous times and the screen did not break and nothing messed up. They said; "If only Sony Ericsson had put in a decent keypad!" The keypad is FINE, and work's wonderfully.

Gah! I was in love with this phone at first. But after a while, it wouldnt charge when I plugged in the charger. Got it mended, but now its dodgy again :/ And the 2,8 and 0 keys are now stuck and do not respond. That may be because it has been drenched in Coca Cola numerous amounts of times, but meh. Callers say that the microphone is v. good and the camera is excellent. Music quality is satisfactory. Overall an OK phone, but it not perfect. x

I've had it for less than a year and it's an OK phone. Not great, just OK. Good features, nice design, decent battery life (3 days on average use), good reception. On the downside, the display legibility is crappy (it's almost impossible to read unless indoors or at night time!), very disappointing camera performance (believe it or not, the W880i that has no autofocus nor LED flash takes better pictures!), not loud enough (the vibration not being strong enough make it easy to miss calls), the keypad is really dysfunctional and the position of the pop-port on the side makes it impossible to keep it in your pocket and listen to music simultaneously. What's more, the pop-port gets easily scratched and after a good 6-9 months of tear and wear, the the headset gets disconnected at the slightest movement. I can live without listening to its average MP3 quality, but not being able to actually charge it (thank you Sony Ericsson for using the same jack for both the headset a nd the charger!) is a real deal breaker. Finally, I'm not a big fan of the OS, but that's just me. So, if you get it for a good price (or as a gift), keep it. If you have to pay a fortune, look elsewhere.

Also, I find it is quite quiet compared to other phones I have heard. Still have loved it though.

For the first 4 months I thought the phone was great! But the fault after fault occurred. I have been to the Orange shop countless times. To date I now have collected over 15 customer papers each for a a different occasion. Ranging from battery problems to ledc screen problems. Recently Orange gave me a brand new K550i, and yet only 12 days later the headset symbol on the phone came up; even though I hadn't yet used my headphones on the 'new' phone. Now one month later I am still waiting for Sony Ericsson to ring me and apologize, and Orange to ring me and tell me they have my wonderful mobile ready for me to collect. Because of my K550i i have had to buy another mobile (W350i) to compensate for the loss of my mobile. The Sony Ericsson K550i is a heavy phone which is only good for people who have no life, and wish to spend their better used time complaining and getting frustrated. Peter Igidbashian - 16 years old

Returned it for repair, when i got it back it worked well for a month and the same thing happened. This phone represents excellent value for money. It's neat and small and fits into your handbag or pocket easily. The keys take some getting used to though as they're so small. Im a fast texter but these buttons slow me right down. You do get used to them though. No joystick to worry about which is a bonus. To be honest this phone represented a bit of a stopgap for me while I located a new K800i. It's not really a 'keeper' more of a spare phone. LED flash instead of a xenon and only 2mp camera. Still, for the money I would recommend it.

Excellent value for money. Good music player and reasonable camera for 2 mp with LED light. The key pad would certainly not suit the fat fingered fraternity as my fingers are small and I can just about manage. The speaker is quite quiet, so it is easy to miss a call or text when there is a lot of background noise. You definitely need a memory card, but most phones do. All in all, despite these faults it is an excellent little phone that fits in your pocket easily. Recommended.

I have had this phone for over a year now and it has been fanstastic. I got it for 60 and had to top up by 20 at the carphone warehouse. I'd never had a phone like this before and was really excited to get it. The camera is quite good and it has flash which is a bonus. The settings you can change are great. Some of the keys tend to stick but I don't notice because I am used to the phone, although texting takes longer because some of the keys don't work sometimes. The only thing I do not like about this phone is that I'm bored of it , but maybe that's because I've had it for over a year. I would'nt recommend buying this phone now , not because it is'nt good, because it is, it's just that the phone doesn't really have any of the exciting features that other phones have today . But other thank that everything has been fine, I've never had to take it back to the shop, and as a 14 year old girl, the phone has been excellent, however, I'm now moving on to get the LG coo kie because I am starting to get really bored of this phone.

I've had this phone for just over a year now and it has been great. It has been dropped about 20 times (mainly by my clumpsy friends) and it is very resilient so it can't break easily. The camera quality is good. The phone itself looks cool. The sound quality when the headphones are in are better than my iPod nano's quality, so it can replace your iPod aswell. The battery life is good even when I take hundreds of pics and listen to music it doesn't drain the battery as much as other phones. The only 2 thing I dont't like about this phone are the buttons, even after a year of having it I still havn't got used to its tiny buttons and I still text very slow. Also the loudspeaker while on a phone call or when playing music is somewhat below average quality, very fuzzy. I LOVE this phone. I got it after losing my D600, and I have never looked back. I adore sony ericssons, they're so easy to use and they're just brilliant, and I must say, the K550i is the cream of the crop

My friend has this phone,I badly wanted it, really! But I had to get a k750i insted as i needed infered (witch i had been told this phone didnt have) and it was out of my price-range (but now it is in >:( ) Then my friend got it. She has it in the purpley coulour and i admit it is very nice indeed, The screen is great, and its slim, but not cheap feeling, But, the volume buttons are akward, you realy need nails just to make them work they are so far in the phone! Also after just a week it was switching itself off and being a pain. Although she still has it, it is doing her head in. I'm glad i went for the K750i, although it isnt very nice to look at, and it it a brick, it does its job, what more can you ask? Im only giving this phone 3 stars

The K550i is a good-looking and good performing phone. My K550i lasted for about 10 months before I was told to buy a new phone because it would cost too much to repair the LED ribbon. At first, the phone had some glitches - it turned on and off on its own. But for the majority of the time, it was a good performing phone with a good camera. I thought the speakers on mine were a bit quite compared to other Walkman phone but this is after all, a cyber-shot.

I thought the samsung D600 was the greatest ever until I got this thing. Believe me, for the money the best value bar NONE. At 18 months old it ain't new, but it simply delivers in EVERY area. I'm getting another to store away. Even has a TORCH/LIGHT on it. Brilliant.

Had my Sony Ericsson K550i for about a year now, never had any problems with it. Its a good phone. Every now and then it freezes, the camera is okay. Mine hols alot of songs as it had a memory card. Also alot of photo's. I Would recommend this phone for someone who wants an easy to use phone. In general, its a good phone
