Sony Ericsson K550i Review

Phone rating:

Review: May 2007. Updated July 2009.

The Sony Ericsson K550i is a very good entry-level phone.

The K550i is the upgraded version of the popular K510i, but it's massively more powerful, borrowing many features from Sony Ericsson's flagship K800i Cyber-Shot phone. The camera is a 2 megapixel camera with a photo light and digital zoom, that includes the autofocus feature first found in the K800i. Instead of a fixed focus camera, with autofocus you can ensure that the subject of your photo is firmly in focus, leading to noticeably sharper images. The K550i features "picture blogging" - take a picture and send it straight to your own image blog for friends and family to view. There's also a good quality video camera.

The phone delivers on the music front too. It includes an FM radio as well as a music player. Sound quality is excellent, as you'd expect from the company that makes the top-selling Walkman range of music phones. The K550i is compatible with stereo headphones and Bluetooth wireless stereo headsets - both are available as optional accessories from Sony Ericsson. A very welcome feature is the generous amount of internal memory (64 Mbytes - enough for about a dozen songs) and the support for a Memory Stick Micro™ card, available in sizes up to 2 Gbytes. As with the Walkman phones, the K550i is equipped with two useful music features: TrackID™ & PlayNow™. TrackID lets you record a few seconds of a song, and then get the track, artist and album information sent directly to your phone. PlayNow is a service for downloading music and games to your phone (you have to pay for these.)

Available in a choice of black or white, the K550i is a compact and lightweight phone that looks very attractive (it's much less of a brick than the K800i for example). The buttons are smaller than most Sony Ericssons, but are not so difficult to use as they are well spaced out and project a millimetre or so above the surface of the phone. However, they do have a tendency to stick. The display is a good quality TFD LCD screen that retains good visibility in sunlight and is of a high resolution. At 176 x 220 pixels, it isn't as fine as the display on the K800i, but it's double the number of pixels of the K510i and is average for this price range.

Other useful features worth mentioning are the built-in speakerphone, sound recorder (for recording voices or other sounds), quadband support (for using the phone worldwide) and flight mode. There's good internet support too: EDGE for fast downloads, a web browser, and support for blogging and RSS feeds. Battery life is good.

We are impressed by the K550i. It's a great value for money phone that really offers more than it should! If only Sony Ericsson had put in a decent keypad!

Features of the Sony Ericsson K550i include:

  • 2 megapixel camera with autofocus, 2.25x digital zoom and photo light
  • Video recording
  • Display: TFD, 262,144-colour, 176 x 220 pixels
  • Music / media player
  • FM radio
  • Polyphonic ringtones
  • Speakerphone
  • Sound recorder
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS, Email
  • 3D Java games
  • Animated wallpaper
  • Alarm clock, Calculator, Calendar, Contacts, Notes, Phone book, Stopwatch, Tasks, Timer
  • Memory: 64 Mbytes plus Memory Stick Micro™ (M2™) support
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB mass storage, infrared
  • Web browser, RSS feeds
  • WAP, GPRS, EDGE
  • Vibration alert
  • Flight mode
  • Quadband
  • Size: 102 x 46 x 14 mm
  • Weight: 85g

Recieved this mobile last week, I was so nervous as i sold my brand spanking new SE S500i lovely phone but not to my liking as i am not keen on slides. However the K550i outclasses it by a long way in my opinion, better sound, larger fonts which is great for me as i dont have to wear glasses to read a text now, definately not a down grade, my advise is go and buy it oh just one little niggle imode? No idea how to use it. I used to be able to access my hotmail on my mobile but just dont know how to do it with imode unless anyone can help ukkeena@hotmail.com

If Anyones Got good settings for it could they e-mail it to weirdwilli@hotmail.com taa Also i have to say thats im happy about the music player compaired to the K750 also if anyone knows about hacking it to the w610i then please help me :] After hacking my last phone i thought it might be easy but the k550i isnt yet supported that way yet :(

This is a very nice phone, except that occasionally one of the number keys stops working (pressing hard does not help). Blowing hard into the power/data socket has cured this quickly each time though. Maybe I shouldn't have taken it to the beach! Or maybe there should be a cover for the socket! Also, the phone crashed when I was reading an RSS feed at the same time as another was downloading. Finally, I recommend reducing the display brightness to increase battery life.

Havent tried out listening to music via bluetooth but i guess no problem would be expected, it should work flawlessly.

This phone is totally amazing. Firstly the picture quality is superb, it produces such a clear picture. The sound is fab. The phone is light and small to carry around and not at all bulky. I wish they could have made the camera zoom in on normal mode but you can zoom in on burst mode so that makes up for it. What really impresses me about this phone is that you can play a range of different formats like WMA which is great as you can store more tracks on the phone. The built in memory is huge and you can even buy a 1 gig memory card for only £10 off amazon. The phone is solid and doesnt have a plasticy feel to it. However i with they made the back of the phone which lifts up to reveal the battery stronger but it is also made out of pretty tough plastic which is hard to break. the FM radio is great and is really clear. Eventhough not many themes or other applications have been made for the phone, I recomend that download themes/application designed for the K750i. The bluetooth transfer is super fast and when transfering files from PC to phone they also transfer super fast. Eventhough on my D600 i had world time, i just downloaded a similar application for free. This phone is a cyber shot and walkman phone and you definatly are getting your money's worth its like a 2 in 1 phone. I would recomend this phone to everyone. I tried out the camera on K750 and it is really grainy eventhough it is 2.0 mp but this the K550i is 2.0 mp and is really clear and non grainy. The keypad buttons are different in style and take a bit of getting used but are easy to use whren you get the hang of it. The phone has a very stylish design.I love this phone so much and couldnt ask for a better phone. Its so good and nice im scared of taking it out!

Dudes and dudettes, i was going for the W810i, when this snazzy little number caught my eye. Essentially its an awesome phone comparable to most phones nowadays, and also doesnt rinse out your wallet as much as one might expect. For the money, i would have to agree, and give it an impossible 6 out of 5. It really is the definition of a budget phone, without and of the negative. If you are having doubts, stop thinking, i mean it, stop it before you hurt yourself, and buy this phone with the pennies you find on the floor. So look hard, and if i see you without this phone, then i may have to insult "yo mama", thats right, i went there....

The fact i can update my blog staright away from my phone is an ausome feature. and the camera quality is ausome too. Dont be startled by its awesome look, even though it looks fantastic and so astetically pleasing to the eye, the price is low to. I payed only £15 for the handset with a cheap monthly tarrif. I think everyone should buy this phone also. Its really fantastic!

This phony is tremendously outstanding. I got it about 2 months ago and there is hardly any problems with it. It's camera is of extremely good quality and i would recommend it to anyone. It's a must buy..... and oh it can take a lot of damage as i have dropped it several times and there's hardly a scratch.

This phone has great features and looks brilliant. The only downpoints, the reception isn't as good as my previous phone. I am now on my second replacement and this phone seems to have developed the same fault as the last, when you get a text or a call the screen goes blank for a few seconds, it also seems to take a few seconds to react to any key press, this can get extremely frustrating!

I bought this phone, but i feel the memory given for this phone is less, as the features tempt us to download a lot of things,For which i will hav to buy a memory stick now. The battery once charged can be used max for 48hrs. The pics resolution is not that great indoors.

This phone is reely good! It looks stylish and has everything i would want:). The only drawbacks are that the buttons are small, and hard to use. Plus the picture quality when indoors goes all grainy. appart from that though, its a good phone i would recomend! ps, how long is the battery life?......

I think k550i is a good phone but it has some features I dislike. First, its has a Cyber-Shot camera and its camera result is not better than K750i. Pics at night are of very low quality. Secondly, it's keys are not good. you have to make an effort just to press them correctly. The pic- capturing button is too soft and it gets pressed whenever you hold the phone. On the other hand its camera is awesome at day time i.e. in the Sunlight or in a bright room. It's bluetooth transfer rate is great. Its sound quality is good(not as good as a Walkman Phone but since it's not a Walkman phone ,no one expected its Sound quality to be that good. its has got good features. I wish Sony had the folder protection feature as Samsung. In my ratings, the phone just b/c of its few drawbacks fall in the 'Good' category

This is a very good phone. I purchased it 1 month ago. However as i had used a walkman phone before, i wish the sound quality was as good... Anyway it has a fantastic camera, a good photo editor (with all those red eye reduction settings and stuff...). The only thing i did not like was purchasing a 512MB M2 card - It's very expensive. SE could have provided us with atleast 256 MB. And the memory card cannot be hot swapped. But anyway its a great phone. I love it.

I got this phone a month ago...after 2 days the number 4 button was really stiff and was a mission to use especially with text messages. Phoned Orange, got a new phone...3 days later same thing happened with same number and also the number 6 button, Phoned Orange and they sent me a 3rd phone. It was fine until 10 days later. The numbers were ok, but suddenly the screen started going blank everytime i got a text message, and a call, couldnt see who it was from before i answered it. Called orange and they offered me same phone or two other rubbish ones. I would seriously think about getting this phone... i cant see how i could have been unlucky with the same phone 3 times!!!

Got this two days ago and so far have not been too impressed. Keys are hard to press and reception is poor and i'm very disappointed with the camera. My old K750 took much better pictures and this is supposed to be a cybershot phone. Not much of an uprade at all.
