Sharp GX25 review

 Review: June 2005

Rating: 3 stars

In a nutshell: Mid-range lightweight camera phone.

Review

The Sharp GX25 is a love-it-hate-it kind of phone. It has some great features and some not so great ones. On the plus side, it's very lightweight and compact, with an internal aerial, so great for keeping in a pocket or bag. It's got one of the best screens in its class with 262,000 colours and extremely high resolution (QVGA). You'd need to pay quite a bit more to better the quality of this screen. It also comes with excellent connectivity, including full Bluetooth™ support for wireless headsets and data transfer, in addition to infrared and USB options.

However, despite these great features, the GX25 is sadly let down by an average camera and miserably small memory - just 2.1 Mbytes. It's a mystery why a phone with the best screen in its class is so woefully unable to take better pictures and then store more than a handful. There's nothing else that's particularly wrong with the phone, and in fact the camera isn't worse than average, it's just: why pay extra for an exceptional screen when the phone's capabilities don't allow you to make good use of it?

Had this phone since 04 and still works brilliantly. Most solid phone I've seen and had, mine's taken a massive amount of abuse yet works perfectly. It doesn't have mp3 or a good camera but for phone usage such as ringing and texting does the job reliably and efficiently. Built in Japan which testament to the solid build quality and long life and hard to find nowadays with brands building their phones in China or East Europe. My friends have these plastic cheaply made smart phones that are all singing all dancing but don't last more than a year; or work well as phones with rubbish aerials and poor sound quality. I wish Sharp still made phones for the UK market. When it dies I think I'll hunt down another GX-25. Great job Sharp hope clam phones make a come back.

....have had this phone about 5years now, have been using other newer phones since then, with mp3's, longer video capability, much more memory, radio, etc but I still like this phone. The memory is a bit rubbish and it would be nice to have themes or mp3 tones, but who cares, the camera on this phone far outshines the sony ericsson and nokia's I've used in the meantime, and for some reason I love the fact it can take night pictures with its little light...and it's one phone that hasn't switched itself off or frozen on me (so far) mid conversation, which is pretty spectacular!!...It's old skool, I love it and I'm keeping it...

I've just got Sharp GX25. It's good, knows more than my old Nokia, (bluetoooth, more memory, more ringtones and the camera etc.) but knows less as far as calendar, note, reminder settings are concerned. I don't really like its phone book. There are lots of unnecessary boxes for never needed data, but can't cope with 3 or 4 phone numbers to one contact, or can't copy numbers. Also can't repeat reminders e.g. for a task I must do on 4th of every month. It does not repeat birthdays from year to year, with which I was so comfortable with my Nokia. I hope I'll get more comfortable with my Sharp after inserting all data I need into it's memory, but will miss those functions I mentioned hereinbefore.

It was very hard wearing as I put it through the wash several times and constantly dropped it :S it was only on the fourth wash that the screen started to go and I got a new phone. I went for the Samsung D600, which I also really liked :) but that was stolen from me a few weeks ago and I am going to purchase the loyal and hard wearing Sharp GX25 again :)

It is VERY Beautiful nice looking phone. I have had it for 4 years but it has stopped working after 4 years but all it needs is a new battery I paid 179 for it. Maybe it should have been about 4o euros less because the memory is not great and the graphics for the video arnt great but all in all it is a good phone.

I bought this phone in Jan 2005 in Hong Kong and it still works perfectly, the worst damage on the phone is there xera printed on the back that isn't anymore, and I had to replace the battery for 5. I see all the comments about the number of pics that it stores, I have 31 pics stored on mine, as well as 40 ringtones that didn't originally come with the phone, and the hong kong version only has 1.8 MB memory, if thats not enough for a phone than wait a few years im sure that you may get what you want, just remember that the number of pics as well as ringtones is about compression, size does matter. Ive been very satisfied with this phone as it still works after 2 1/2 years, and that cant be said about my other phone (nokia 2310) that is 6 months old and only displays in arabic regardless of what you set the language to. as well as the nokia 8210 that lasted 4 months, and the sagem my x-5 that lasted about 5 weeks.

It has a picture editor with different effects to choose from and a melody editor. The downside is the memory, it is pretty small especially when you're taking all those pictures and it starts bleeping becuase the memory's full. But once you've uploaded the pictures to the PC you can delete them off the phone and make space, it isn't really the end of the world. It does look very stylish and sleek, not like the average ugly antenna, grey, bulky flip phone. =P

Yes, the memory is a bit of a let down, but its made up for. I got a bluetooth dongle for my PC, and transferring files using the included software is really easy. The screen is really good. I held it up to my LCD monitor, and it looked just as good, if not even better. The camera is good, for its resolution. Although the photo's tend to look slightly better on the phone, other than the PC. Still, i use it for a lot of spur of the moment pics, to be uploaded to my website, blog etc. looks wise, it is pretty sharp(excuse the pun). The outside screen is a little small, but then again I could still see call details clearly. In the year I've had this phone, it nhas been abroad many times, with myself and family. It works grand in The USA, and network set up is a doddle. All in all, and very good phone for its price, even when it was twice the price it is now

I've had my phone for about a year now and am happy with it. I've got the red one and it looks fantastic! That said I only use it for calls and texts, and I use the organizer/calender all the time. So I can't comment on some of the problems some people have been having with WAP etc. I would say that I am a light to moderate user so generally charge my phone once every 3 or 4 days. This is my second sharp phone, the previous being a sharp gx30. I think that the interface is really quick and easy to use which is why I have stuck with Sharp after having my gx30. The only thing I would like to have had was MP3 playback capability, but as I said, I got my phone a year ago and MP3 playback capability was rare back then. So if you want a phone that small, light, easy to use and you're not fussed about MP3 players, then this is a good choice.

Quite simply the worst phone i have ever had the misfortune to own. Its a shame that 'poor' is the worst rating i could choose, as personally i think its attrocious. The phones looks outdated, the keypad is impossible to use, the ringtones, message alerts are the worst ive ever heard, the video clips only last about 10 seconds, the camera isnt up to scratch, the bluetooth connection rarely works, the phones reception is the worst ive experienced and quite simply there isnt a single thing i like about it. Its just as well that this was a replacement for a broken Sony Ericsson, as i couldnt put up with it any longer than the 2 months i was forced to until my current contract has expired. DONT GO ANYWHERE NEAR THIS DISASTER!!

Really dissapointed with this phone, went out and bought it on impulse as it looked like it had all the essential features at a decent price. Lack of memory is annoying though, it wouldnt even save a ringtone. The buttons are too small and the menu's arent very accessible. Trying to sell mine now & everyone just laughs at me because of the memory! ooops! think carefully bout this phone so you dont make the mistake I did!

This is smart. If you're reading this Sharp, Make a phone like this, But with MP3 and a memory stick slot. More about this phone, The keyboards a bit wierd, And the phones a bit boring. Also you can't browse other phones with Bluetooth. Only give Media files. This phones not too bad, Yet not too good.

Greetings from Athens/Greece. Very nice little phony. I have it for almost 6 months. really like the way it plays midi files. Camera is bad but what would you expect. Memory is bad as well but you can take some pics and vids and download them with the data cable, easily and fast. Only problem I got: you just can't upload more than 100kb files + amr filetypes canNOT be set as ringtone!!! Tried up mmf files but still 100kb cannot get you a 2 minute song in. and the quality is poor. Mayb cause I use the "One Click Ringtone Converter"? I dunno... If anyone know a proggy to make small size mmf files (only ones i think except for midis that can be set as ringtone), please mail me at: ZeusT@ebox.gr Nothin' else. Nice 2 c so many people with good reviews on this (and my) phone. thanx.

I've had this phone for a year and it is top-notch. It's very easy to use, the menues are colourful and simple, the camera is great, and I would never go back to those caveman phones without bluetooth. The only problems I've ever had with it is that the realtones don't work on some networks (I'm on Vodafone) and recently I've had a few issues with the bluetooth, but this is after a year of constant use! I would definitely recommend this phone to anyone. It's just a shame that the next Sharp phone is so ugly, otherwise I would be sticking with them!

Looks great but it is the worst phone ever, not only does it have only 2MB memory. You cant record anything over 96kb. Might use it as a door stop. Would give no star if possible. DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE.

Classy lookin' phone .... but the memory is absolute rubbish! Great camera and impressive resolution. Very light-weight and compact clamshell design. But why cant you use your recorded stuff as a ringtone !!?? And the more sounds you save the less pics you can take ! But overall a great phone to muck about with. Yet still needs more memory. By the way if you use VIA Bluetooth ... KEEP BLUETOOTH SWITCHED OFF WHEN NOT IN USE !!!! IT KILLS BATTERY LIFE LIKE CRAZY! Abyway cya later by the way i reccomend this or a Toshiba TS10 :)

If possible I would have given this phone 2.5 rather than 2. I bought this phone on contract after returning from Japan where I had a sharp mobile I was very happy with. I primarily got this phone because of its looks, I was aware that it didnt have the many features of my beloved Japanese 'keitai' but as Id ceased using them a few months after getting that phone I wasnt too bothered about that so the camera, small memory and lack of mp3 was no big deal, but having a nice screen and good looking phone was. Ive had the phone a year now, its worn fairly well and there have been no malfunctions although it now has some visible 'bald' spots on the casing and the silver foil on the menu button is peeling off. Ive never got the bluetooth to work as the handset demands a code to connect to anything, vodafone have been no help in locating this code so I gave up. Battery life is nothing special and youll have to charge it every day if you use it much for talking and play an odd game or two, or every other day if you dont. The vodafone custom menu is miserable to use (much like vodafone) and I really miss Sharps intuitive menu design but theres no way to retrieve it sadly. The thing which has really tired me of this phone though is the very s l o w processor. The phone lags behind your key presses sometimes by several seconds. Type in a number quickly and itll miss several letters even on 'maximum' speed. The only time this doesnt happen curiously is when using predictive txt (non predictive is as slow as everything else), and thank god or I would have thrown it through a window. You can only delete individual items or all items in a folder so if you want to clear out the small inbox then its frustrating and laborious as the phone lags behind your keypresses, taking an age to confirm everything. I would recommend this handset for those who are looking for a simple WAP phone because of its looks, clear bright screen, and functionality. But the slow operation could well drive you to distraction.

This phone keeps losing connection onto the vodafone network particulary indoors such as within shops. The pictures are very poor quaility especially the capture of colours for a VGA camera phone. The memory is abysmal. The menus require more clicks than are necessary to perofrm the same functions as on a Nokia. I was given this phone by work with a company paid SIM card account. The phone is so bad I have taken the SIM out and put it in a 2 year old Nokia 3650 much bigger older but much more reliable and functional. Don't buy this phone, I don't even want it free.

my mate has this and it is okay-ish. It just seems like with the good features ther is something about it to let it down. It has a big screen but everything that comes up on it like annimations come up tiny. My screen isnt much smaller than hers and things show up well bigger. The camera is average like it says on the intro thing and it has rubbish frames. The video is not good because you cant see a thing and its short and blurry. It has got fast connection with bluetooth and infrared but the memory is way too small to hold anything. It is kind of huge too. Like a small 3g phone and it clicks when you open it but apart from ALL that it is a good phone.
