Sharp GX15 review

 Review: September 2004

Rating: 3 stars

In a nutshell: Mid-range candy-bar style phone with high resolution screen and camera.

Review

The Sharp GX15 is a compact candy-bar design phone with a good range of features.

The integrated VGA camera does not have the resolution of the more expensive Sharp GX30, being only 350,000 pixel resolution, but it is still an excellent camera by comparison with other camera phones. It also has a video recorder capable of recording video clips with sound.

The screen is of excellent quality with 65k colours, and uses TFT technology for a bright vivid display that is clearly visible even in sunlight. The screen is physically large but the resolution is limited at 120 x 160 pixels, so not as sharp as the GX20 or GX30. However, in the entry-level camera phone class, this is one of the best screens available.

The user interface is icon-driven, intuitive and easy to use.

The GX15 comes with 40-voice polyphonic ringtones that are of very high quality and it supports Java™ applications, which means that games and other applications can be downloaded. The memory is quite limited at just 1.8 Mbytes, which is not a lot for storing video clips, photos, ringtones and games.

Finally, the GX15 has full Bluetooth™ wireless support. One of the disappointments of the GX30 was that the Bluetooth support was limited to connecting a wireless headset. The GX15 also allows Bluetooth communication with a PC and other Bluetooth phones. This enables you to transfer photos and videos to a compatible PC or laptop.

Inevitably the GX15 is going to be compared with the Sony Ericsson T630. The phones look similar, are almost exactly the same size and weight and have almost the same features. The GX15 does not have the smart looks of the T630, but it has all the features, with the addition of a video camera. Overall, this is an excellent value phone that offers video recording, full Bluetooth functionality (plus infrared and USB), an excellent screen and triband operation in a neat and lightweight package.

IT WORKED VERY WELL INDEED AND TOOK GREAT PHOTOS, BUT THEN AFTER JUST OVER 12 MONTHS IT'S RECEPTION BROKE DOWN AND I WAS NEVER ABLE TO GET IT REPAIRED.I WAS OFFERED A NEW ONE BUT DIDN'T GET IT BECAUSE MINE WAS ONLY COVERED BY A 12 MONTH GUARANTEE AT THE TIME INSTEAD OF THE NOW 2 YEAR STANDARD WARANTEE. WHY MY SET COULDN'T BE FIXED I REALLY DON'T KNOW AND THE NORM OF THE RETAILERS AT THE TIME HERE MORE OR LESS PUT YOU OFF REPAIRS SAYING IT 'S JUST BETTER TO GET A NEW SET. MY PHONE WAS STILL IN TIP TOP CONDITION WHEN IT LET ME DOWN SO I SUSPECT A FACTORY FAULT SOMEWHERE. CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHERE THERE'S A DECENT CELL PHONE TECHNICAN. I STILL LOVE MY SHARP AND AM DYING TO GET IT RIGHT AGAIN ( UNLESS THE SAME RECEPTION PROBLEM IS COMMON ELSWHERE OFCOURSE!!). EMAIL : wenzugrima610@gmail.com

I got this phone in December 2004, and at around March/April this year, I started to notice some battery problems where the phone would not keep its charge, so it has been passed down to my sister, who only needs the phone occasionally. When I had the phone, I loved it. The design is lovely especially compared with some of the tacky designs that were out a few years ago. It has pretty good features too, camera with quite a lot of photo storage space, huge inbox, easy to navigate. One thing that did annoy me though, was the video recording. You can record 15 or 30 second clips, which is quite short, and if you record 30 seconds, you can not send the video as a message. Also there is no USB so I don't know how you would connect the phone to the computer? Overall it is a great phone, and ideal for a first phone, well thats what I found anyway.

The memory is rubbish, I couldnt gat any videos that lasted longer than 10 seconds. The phone didnt accept any photos with a slightly large memory which was very irritating. It never accepted music, even if it was very short. The battery was good at first but soon it beagn to last for no time at all. Finally the phone stopped sending texts, after going to the vodafone shop, an electrical shop and talking to a robot for an hour, it couldnt be fixed. This was after having it for a year.

I've had this phone for just about 2 years now, so I know how it works and stuff. To be honest, It's a great phone with just a few drawbacks: The video recording can only do 12 seconds at a time, but you can do lots of 12 second videos. But there isn't a way to record a video for more than 12 seconds. Even though you can do voice clips, you can't set them as a ringtone. After about 1 year, the battery starts going wrong. It only lasts for about a day, even if you didn't actually use it that day. My GX15 will not charge after it runs down without me taking the battery out and putting it back in again. The amount of memory is quite poor. Those are the main problems I've had with it, but that said, It's an extremley good phone compared to some others.

This phone is a waste of money, the reception is poor. The bluetooth functionality is rubbish: it's not possible to activate it automatically on incoming calls (like my previous philips fisio 825) for a few time, so the battery charge falls in a day with permanent bluetooth activated. Moreover, is not possible to make voice calls directly speaking on the headset, i.e. driving. It's only a little toy for tiny kids, not for use in a normal useful contest. The video clips are blurred and short. Therefore the phone is going back to the supplier.

I've had this phone for about three months and I think it's the best one I've used so far. However there are one or two aspects I thought could be better: 1.The colours of the menu page could be more interesting. Compared to the Sony it's as boring as hell! 2. Is it just me or is the ring tone very low? I can't hear my phone ringing if I step out of the room ...and it's on the loudest level. Aside from the above points though I do like this phone a lot. I think for the price I paid (#80) it was worth the purchase and I would recommend it to anyone.

I just got this phone for 50 pounds with trade in, its good value for the price but the battery runs down easily so you have to charge it up regularly, every time you charge it up, you have to remove and put back a little fiddley cover which could get easily lost and so expose the connector to static electricity. The rounded edges of the phone make it easy to slip out of the hand and get damaged. Still its good value for money but I wish I had paid 30 pounds extra and got the Sony ericsson k500i.

Coming from a Nokia 3410 to this was a very pleasant change. Although the old phone was reliable, it was not stylish, had very few features and was heavy. My new GX15 has an excellent camera and voice recorder. I was very impressed with both. There is also video, which I don't particularly need, but is nice to have. The melody editor was interesting, having not been able to make polyphonic ringtones before. The calendar feature is surprisingly useful, unlike on my previous phone. It's easy to use, simple and overall an excellent feature. There is only one game on the phone, however, along with two very short demos. This is disappointing, but it's not too bad. My main problem with the phone is that the Vodafone Live! and MMS messaging doesn't work. It doesn't let me make a GPRS connection. This is quite irritating. I do have a problem with Vodafone, because the tariffs are high, and to switch back to Smartplus plan, you need #7.50 credit on your phone, which I can't understand at all. However, buying text bundles is quite good and lasts longer than I would had I chose to have total control over how many texts I have per day. Overall, this is a very decent phone. Pity it's only in Vodafone though...

VIDEO IS ONLY ABOUT 12 SECS BUT STILL WORTH HAVING. RINGTONES ARE ALSO GOOD. TEXTING IS EASY. COMES WITH 3 DEMO GAMES, MY FAVE IS PINBALL. YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE WHOLE GAME FOR FREE I THINK. ALL IN ALL THIS IS A SMART LITTLE PHONE FOR ITS PRICE!!!!!!!

This phone is a waste of money, the reception is poor and it echoes the voice of the caller from another phone. The video clips are blurred and short and the battery runs down extremely quickly. Therefore the phone is going back to the supplier

This is one of the best phones out on the market in my opinion. I recomend this phone because it is small, the camera is good and there is plenty of memory.

This fone looks da bomb. Its gonna be my first camera phone. My dad has got the samsung P510 and i love tht fone but mines gonna be better. Great idea to put video into fones tht arent three fones, by the way three fones suck they are the worst my m8s got one and it died after 3hrs. Anyway ive heard the camera is good and it can store mp3 files from other blue-tooth fones. So thts cool. This makes a perfect present. Get this fone plz. Oh and buy the new christmas song by Avid Merrion,Patsy Kensit and Davina MCcall its great i bought it on friday. Merry Christmas to u all.

I got the Sharp GX 15 on my contract upgrade, and I have to say it's an absolute marvel!! I'm a Nokia babe thru and thru, but I thought I'd give another make a try, and I'm glad I did!! The screen is very clear, the games are great, the bluetooth is very useful and the vid cam facility is phenomenal!! The only thing that's not so great is the poor memory, but this is hardly a major problem. One thing though, the demo games on the handset I got can't be deleted!! Is this supposed to be the case?!!

Great phone for price, nice big clear screen, camera ok, video ok, (with sound and you don't need earpiece to hear it - about 10 seconds worth can be recorded at a time) Memory a bit small but adequate. Took ages for Vodaphone to finally register me for GPRS/MMS and then had to reset phone by removing battery for it to work but now its fine and can send and receive MMS. One software bug found though anyone else noticed that you can't type the word 'haynet' in a T9 mode text message ?!?! And its got much better and faster user interface than the samsung p510 !

this phone is very good. I had a siemens mc 60 and i had to change it because of the poor quality screen compared to the sharp's screen it is outstanding by far. Weight and design are very cool as well. My only problem is can you input more games via bluetooth from a pc? like the siemens suite? instead of downloading them has anyone tried doing it?
