Samsung Z140 Review

Phone rating:

Review: October 2005.

The Samsung Z140 is a neat clamshell-styled 3G phone that has a lower specification than the top-of-the-range Samsung Z500, but is still better than most current 3G phones. It's compact and very lightweight for a 3G phone and looks attractive. The keypad and 5 way scroll key are functional and easy to use.

The phone offers everything that you'd expect from a 3G phone: video calling, video & music streaming and downloads, a decent video camera, and a music player. The camera is VGA resolution (0.3 megapixels), so it can't match the megapixel cameras on top-of-the-range phones, but it's good enough for video calling and fun snaps. The main screen is very high quality with 262k colours and high resolution - as good as any 3G phone currently on the market. The music player supports MP3, AAC and AAC+ formats. In addition, the Z140 has a 3D graphics accelerator chip for playing 3D Java games.

The connectivity of the device is excellent, with support for wireless Bluetooth and infrared data transfer, as well as USB cable. The memory is adequate, with 50 Mbytes of shared memory, but it would have been nice to have an expandable memory slot to store MP3 tracks and videos.

The big problem with the Z140 is its poor battery life. All 3G phones have relatively poor battery life, but the Z140 is particularly poor. You can prolong the standby time by switching off Bluetooth, but most users will have to charge it every day or so.

Still, it's a reasonable mid-range 3G phone with a neat design and most of the features that people want. The only things missing are a memory card and a megapixel camera, and for that you will need the Samsung Z300 or Z500.

Features of the Samsung Z140 include:

  • 3G video calling, video & music streaming and downloads
  • Rotating VGA camera (640 x 480 pixels) with 2x digital zoom and photo effects
  • Video recorder (MPEG4 format)
  • Video player (RealOne, MPEG4, 3gp formats)
  • Integrated handsfree speaker
  • Internal display: TFT, 176 x 220 pixels, 262,144 colours
  • External display: TFT, 96 x 96 pixels, 65,537 colours
  • Music player (MP3, AAC, AAC+ formats) with digital power amp
  • 64 voice polyphonic ringtones / MP3 ringtones
  • Messaging: SMS (with learning T9), EMS, MMS, E-Mail (POP3, IMAP, SMTP), vCard / vCalendar
  • Java games with 3D graphics accelerator chip
  • Wallpaper and screensaver (including Flash animated wallpaper)
  • Phonebook (1000 entries)
  • Calendar, Scheduler, To do list, Clock / Worldtime, Alarm (snooze/once/daily/weekly), Currency converter, Calculator, Memo book
  • Memory: 50 Mbytes
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth®, USB, IrDa, Sync ML
  • WAP 2.0, GPRS class 10
  • Triband plus 3G (UMTS)
  • Size: 88 x 48 x 26 mm
  • Weight: 105g
  • Talktime: 2.5 hours(3G) - 4 hours (2G)
  • Battery standby: 220 hours (3G) - 300 hours (2G)

This phone has bad points with good points. Let me explain. I love the fact that the keypad is a decent size and is easy to press and the sound quality on this phone is stunning. 3G is a great thing to have and it's better if you buy a lot of credit so you search the internet easier. And the features of the phone like video are real fun to have. Even against the LG Chocolate it's desirable. The small clamshell design is not outdated however people say so. It's very stylish and the rotating camera is very useful if you need to take a picture of yourself. Although all phones have bad points, however they make it. I cracked my screen by dropping it on the carpet (The outside screen). Also the battery is questionable. It can last hardly any time at all. Samsungs can be very annoying because they more or less do a new type of battery for every phone the bring out. Also memories a problem. 50 MB for a phone like that, especially without a MICRO SD slot is in a sort of way teasing. You can fit not a lot of songs on. But for a phone in late 2005 it's great. My phones lasted to this day. Although for a phone i'd get the upgrade to this one with expanded memory, more stylish look, and a MICRO SD slot. It's more expensive, but it's worth it. I recommend this phone to business workers taht like a little modern technology. For it's small design and functions. With both infared and bluetooth it's a gadget that's very desirable.

My fone is super. I've had it for roughly a year. Good points: Super Camara, can do all latest things, txting good, nice lookin, quite durable (ive dropped it and been ok), super video capture, i like the shortcuts u can set e.g start a txt just by clickin a button, Fab!, can have mp3 ringtones(propa music), battery life is decent it only drops particulary if u on games or watchin vids (not using mine lasts up 2 days frequenty usin 2 days), doesnt take eternity 2 charge up and hasn't depreciated much in price! Bad points: Ringtones are quite quiet- u can hear easily, from arms length, but not that loud (cant play tunes as loud as nokias but no problem with headfones in), my sidekey dnt work well but that just mite b my fault, cant have mp3 txt tones (not that it matters), battery life if u were being piccy, oh and video callin cost 50p a min on Vodafone- that sucks! (i guess it might get cheaper) Othawise super fone i recommend to anyone hu wants a decent fone dat dus wat it ses! Ricko Arni

I have had this phone for less than 6 months and have already had to send it back to my service provider to be repaired as it completely lost the signal rendering it utterly useless. The fact that it is relatively new does not inspire confidence in the stability of the product in the future. The problem with the signal coupled with the abysmal battery life (about 1 day!) makes this the worst phone I have ever owned. Stay clear of this phone at all costs.

Well, I'm gonna say the pros and cons. Pros-1. Cheap phone considering you get 3G, camera, video, Mp3 Player and infrared. 2. Small, good design. 3.Nice menu layout. 4. Memory space is ok. (Nokia is much better) Cons-1. Battery life is one of the shortest ive ever seen in a phone. 2. Camer and video quality is not great. 3. Reception could be better. All in all this phone is good for anyone who wants a phone that does all the good things but doesnt wanna pay 380 quid. However if you want all the good things in a phone but want the best quality i would recommend the nokia n73 or n80

ok lets be fair about this phone, its not hundreds of pounds, so what you get for the money (89.99payt) it is good, so the camera is not fantastic, not that i have noticed, and some say the battery is naff. but just put it on charge when you go to bed and if you want to be a budding david bailey buy a proper camera! all in all a well thought out design and easy to use and a good quality phone.

This phone ROCKS! I really can't see where many of the rubbish comments that some people have made come from. If you've ever bought a new mobile phone b4, you'd realise that the initial battery charge should be AT LEAST 14 HOURS! The manual never says that (2 hours??)...but it should! Then fully run down battery and do the same again. The phone is awesome. Light weight, attractive and very 'user friendly' with an intelligent menu system that surpasses even Nokia (my old friends for 10 years). The camera is so clear it's hard to believe it's only a megapixel. The 3G makes for very fast browsing. Predictive text is very logical. So initial impressions are very promisin:) Can highly recommend.

The phone looks nice and is reasonably light. I have downloaded my own music to use as ringtones so that's pretty good. However, the camera is absolutely rubbish. Using it is confusing enough but, in addition, there is no flash and, therefore, the quality of the photographs are naff. A complete let down after having my Sharp GX30i which took fantastic pictures. Additionally, the battery life is a huge let down - it needs charging up every couple of days, even with light use. What's more, the signal on the phone appears to be rubbish and tempremental. I'm with the same network provider as I have been with for the last 7 years and only this phone has given me problems in that way. This was supposed by an upgrade from my Sharp GX30i but definitely isn't - more a 'downgrade'!

The quality of the phone seems quite good, the keys are very solid. Many people have complained about the battery life, however if you run the battery down completely and recharge for 12 hours you'll eventually get close to a week out of it. Unless you're always playing around with it like a lot of you whingers probably are.

This is a great phone with good features, camera, music player, video, bluetooth; i have been very happy with it. However, lately, i have been struggling to send texts and make calls, texts not sending and so on. However this is probably just the network. Battery life if fine, as long as you turn off bluetooth ect, it lasts a long time. Lastly, whilst taking a photo press the sidekey to flip the image over. This means you can take pictures with the camera lens facing forward or at you for self portrait. There is an edit mode if you have already taken upside down photos

This is a neat phone! People say you can't put mp3 tracks on easy. But i had simply no problems. Snapping? Not a chance. I even tryed to in a temper and i couldn't. Rubbish battery? I don't agree, Because people don't treat them well. You're supposed to charge them for a full 2 days to make the battery better. Which people obviously didn't do... Rubbish camera? NAH! I thought it was like a 1.3 MP camera at first but when i saw it was a VGA i almost thought it was a print mistake. The 3g is good too. Everywhere i go i have service. But after a while, It turns off and on a couple of times. Well that might just be bad luck for me... Also the 50 Megabyte memory is quite big too, BUT it isn't expandable. People also say that it can't be unlocked. LIES AGAIN. Everywhere i go they say it can be unlocked easy. The rotating camera is really handy, and video calling is really fun too :D The screen's are so colourful! Well the screens are the best on the market (262k). Only one downfall. The mp3 doesn't go too loud... I reccomend this phone to all that want all the latest gadgets at not a bad price!

After 5 years of being a Nokia user, I decided to switch when my contract was up for renewal. And boy did I do well. Ever since the invincible 5110 Nokia's software quality has unfortunately been in a downward spiral, so I was keen to jump ship after the experience of my previous 6230. The Samsung Z140 has not let me down. Not once have I experienced a software crash, and unlike later Nokias the keys feel robust and the phone just oozes class. Signal strength is superb, blowing away almost every other recent phone I can think of. The screen is one of the best I have ever seen, amazing colour and brightness. Key size is also not a problem with my male hands (and the five-way key is a pleasure to use unlike my last Nokia). On the negative side, the battery life is a little anaemic but is noticably better in 2.5G mode (the 3G network in my district is still being deployed). The menus are very Korean, and take a little getting used to if you've used Nokias as long as I have. Also a little hard to get suitably sized wallpapers due to the unusual screen size. Lack of memory expansion is a minor annoyance, and the supplied headphones aren't the best. But these are comparatively minor compared to the stability and build quality of the handset. When it comes to CDMA/UMTS - the Koreans can't be beaten!

I agree the battery life is poor, however after a few total drains and recharges its improved a heck of alot. Transfering mp3s to the phone is easy enough via bluetooth or the supplied data cable, although they have to be put into the ringtones folder, and not the sound folder as you'd expect. Was a little annoyed that I couldnt use mp3's or recorded sounds as txt msg tones, but after a little research and a program called Mp3 to ringtone gold, I can convert small mp3's into mmf files which the phone will let you use as txt alerts, in the profile menu, as was explained earlier. The ringtones and msg alerts are decently loud, and the vibrate is very very engergetic so to speak. Does all it says on the tin and the camera although 0.3mp creates good photos, the video recording is equally pleasing, no artifacts and captures sound well. Alas no 3g coverage where I live at the moment, so I miss out on the video calling. There will always be a better phone than the one you have, but this is nice and small for a 3G phone and will do pretty much what you want. No memory card slot, so the 50mb memoery will have to do, its still quite alot. Dedicated mp3 listeners will most likely have a proper mp3 player to listen to tunes with. 4/5

Video recording actually last up till 1 hour, another mistake by me! I still do think there should be an external memory slot, apart from that its a great phone and well worth getting!

Within one week of having this phone the battery was lasting just a few hours on Standby. Swapped for a new one and the second then lasted about 10-12 hours. Agree with a lot of other comments on this site that I do not understand how Samsung get away with claiming 360hours standby ! I am not a heavy user and am unable to use Bluetooth or 3G as this drains the battery within minutes. I have been unable to get a replacement battery (wonder why!) and have not been as lucky as other users who have had refunds as I took this phone out on a Vodaphone Contract and they refuse to do anything about it. I have to charge my phone every single night and cannot rely on it in an emergency. Suggest you don't buy this phone if you may need to rely on it. Oh signal also very poor found previous Sharp GX10 much much better.

Got this phone for x-mas, i'm not dissapointed with it. The few downsides are the worst battery life i've ever seen in a phone, about 10 hours and thats in standby for most of that time, video recording seems to last for 10 seconds maximum, the side buttons are in an awkward position (i like them like that but they are easy to press accidentaly), no external memory slot, there is a reasonable amount of memory but it would be better to have an external slot. Apart from that its as good as any phone, for the price, its fantastic, so if you have a low budget then this is perfect. Recommended!

The best thing you can do about this phone is do not purchase it if your computer runs on windows 98se or lower as the software supplied with this phone only works on Windows 2000 or Windows XP, also the battery life is useless. Having purchased this phone for a xmas pressy I was not amused when we tried to connect to the computer on xmas day, and then to find that Samsung do not provide a patch nor do they have any intention of supplying one in fact I found Samsung's customer services complete and utterly useless and unhelpful

Hi, I had this phone for christmas, and I'm very happy. My last phone was the nokia 3650, but I had some problems, so I decided to change. The phone is very good, camara quality is OK, you can get some nice photos with it. 50mb of memory it's quite good, you can have some mp3 songs in your mobile which is very good, sound quality is fine. The only problem is the battery, but my last phone, in the first days had also poor battery life, and when I started to charge and use it more times, battery life grew, so I believe the same will happen with the samsung. You can rotate the photos, when you're taking them, in the lateral up/down buttons.

Rubbish, rubbish, rubbish. This is the worst phone I have ever owned. Signal is very poor - next to my old phone which has a perfect signal in my home, this one doesn't get one at all. The battery life on standby is one day ... one day - pathetic. I've luckily managed to get hold of a replacement phone (Nokia N70) after two months of ownership. Steer well clear!

This phone is an excellent all-rounder, it has all the gadgets one could want. With regards the battery life: I have switched me phone from 3G to 2G and only use 3G for watching TV or downloading stuff. Same applies to Bluetooth, I only activate it as and when needed. My battery lasts for 3-4 days. So a few simple changes is all it takes to make this just as good as any phone for battery life. I have always been a 'Nokia man' in the past, but have to admit this Samsung has changed me outlook on phones. If you are reading this to try and make your mind up, then rest assured, you won't regret it.

I bought this phone as a present for my wife was going to wrap it up and put under the Xmas tree, but though I better try it just in case. I could not believe what I experienced next. The battery life in standby mode from fully charged to zilch/nothing is 10 hours i.e not used at all just sitting in standby mode. Obviously a fault so I took it back to where I bought it and they were good enough to exchange it. The replacement was just as bad if not worse. How can Samsung claim in their literature that the phone has up to 360 hours standby when I managed to get 10 or less. I returned the second phone and got a refund. Very luck escape as I understand that the majority of shops will not give refunds on mobiles. Bottom line I like the phone but what use is it if I can't use it.

Got this for the wife to upgrade from the Sharp GX30i, which I think is a better phone. So in a nutshell, it looks nice, clock display on the front is best i have ever seen, but falls short in a lot of areas. Bad points - I put 2 MP3s from my phone (SONY w800i which is briliant) and it used up nearly half the memory. Why have an MPs playing phone with such limited memory? This is compounded by the fact it doesnt have a memory card slot...in this day and age? Unforgiveable. The key pad is nice, sort of rubber like large number buttons, BUT the menu navigation bit at the top is not too good though, I think it is too small and makes navigation a bit tricky. My next problem with this is the fact that you CANNOT load your own message alert onto it. WHAT? Again I think this is a criminal mistake. The sound quality is actually very good on the MP3's, but not being able to use them on everything is poor. All in all the phone looks very nice but I think it lacks what should be seen now as basic features. I am trying the Samsung D600 as a replacement - I will let you know....

I had already switched it off the G3 network and havent used the pictures or video. when I rang vodafone to complain they said it must be cos I have an old sim card which doesnt work well with the newer phone and are sending me a new one. However I suspect its known that the battery is rubbish!

Nice phone, easy to operate, good quality sound, lots of features... Battery usually runs out in 2 days UNLESS you turn off 3G connection and Bluetooth. If you need to use it, turn it on and then again off (a safe procedure to get along with, given the expanding "virus for mobile" and "bluetooth sniffers" market :D) Only one bad thing until now: I use an Apple Mac and although I can transfer files from and to the z140, iSync can't find a device to synchronize with. Neither Bluetooth nor USB...

The camera is not much good and as for the battery life - having to charge a battery 3 times + a week is not my idea of an efficient phone. I am not a heavy phone user either. Overall, the phone feels bulky and i was not greatly impressed by the look and feel. I will not be purchasing this phone

It is totally rubbish, its bulky, heavy for a phone! and even double the size when its open! i strongly recommend you not to purchase this phone, because youll be wasting money and there are many other phones which are better than this and affordable for example: Sony Ericsson K700i. Oh and one last thing! it says its got 50 MB but youll never get to use it, its shared to other applications so if you want to use MP3's and Games the storage is Little than you expect!! Happy Purchases!
