Samsung WF70F5EBW4W review
|Review: November 2015|
In a nutshell: The Samsung WF70F5EBW4W is an entry-level washing machine from the Korean electronics giant. That doesn't make it particularly cheap compared with brands like Beko or Hotpoint, and we're not convinced that there's real value for money here. Although the machine has a decent wash capacity, fast 1400rpm spin and A+++ efficiency, it's quite noisy in operation.
Today's best buy: Samsung WF70F5EBW4W from Corbetts Electrical (£479.99)
The WF70F5EBW4W/EU Ecobubble washing machine is one of Samsung's cheaper models, but it still has a smart, premium look about it, with a subtly curved shape and a modern LED display.
It feels solidly built, and the door is very easy to open and close.
The controls are simple and clear, with a rotary dial to select a wash programme; buttons for power, start, and to select options; and an LED display showing useful information about the current wash. The Last Memory feature lets you repeat the last wash just by pressing the start button, even if the machine has been turned off.
Washing and performance
The 7kg wash capacity of this machine is smaller than most of Samsung's washers, but is still big enough for a couple or a small family. The range of wash programmes isn't quite as comprehensive as Samsung's high-end machines - Bedding is missing - but still includes special options like Super Eco Wash, Baby Care, Wool and Delicates, as well as the usual Cotton, Synthetics, and Dark Wash.
The standard full-length cycle takes 135 minutes, but a 15 minute quick wash is available if you just need to freshen up clothing.
You can choose a Prewash or Intensive wash for particularly stained clothing. For lighter washes, you can wash at lower temperatures, using Samsung's EcoBubble technology to penetrate fabric.
An Eco Drum Clean is available to clean the machine and remove built-up detergent residue.
Unlike some cheaper machines, the Samsung reaches a maximum spin speed of 1400rpm, removing a fair amount of moisture from clothes. It's not the fastest spin speed available however, and the machine is rated "B" for spin efficiency.
When it comes to energy use, the machines is placed in the A+++ class, so it's very low on electricity consumption, even without using the Super Eco Wash. It's not a very quiet machine however, and this can be a problem, made worse by the long times required to complete a full wash cycle.
Samsung is a more reliable make than many, although this model doesn't have the digital inverter motor used in the most reliable of its washing machines. We'd rate it as average in terms of life expectancy.
One advantage that the machine does have is the ability to self-diagnose faults. The appliance detects and diagnoses errors at an early stage and provides easy troubleshooting solutions through the use of a compatible smartphone with LED scanning.
Conclusion - a low-end Samsung
The WF70F5EBW4W is cheaper than most Samsung washing machines, but we think it could be cheaper still. Although it's a nice-looking machine that's solidly constructed and easy to use, it misses out on the digital inverter motor that makes more expensive Samsungs so reliable. This also makes it rather a noisy machine.
There are some good features here, but we'd like to see it priced at around £350 to offer real value. We think that the Bosch WAQ283S1GB freestanding washing machine offers a better deal.
