Samsung UE50MU6100 review

 Review: June 2017

Rating: 4 stars

In a nutshell: The Samsung UE50MU6100 gives you 50 inches of 4K HDR television for a phenomenal price. For 600 or less, you'll get a stylish TV with all the latest features, including superb Smart TV with Netflix, Amazon and more. This is definitely one of the bargains buys of 2017.

Samsung UE50MU6100 review

Samsung is still a brand that knows how to deliver a winning formula at the budget end of the market, and the MU6100 proves that beyond any doubt. £600 really isn't a lot to pay for a 50-inch TV, especially not one that's this good. We've reviewed budget TVs from rival manufacturers and they don't match up to the MU6100.

The TV is smart-looking and attractive, with a practical Y-stand that holds the 50-inch screen secure.

Samsung's superb Tizen-based Smart Hub is an excellent way to access content from the most popular online providers. For streaming, you'll find Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, and YouTube. All the catch-up services are present - iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4, and My5. Online gaming is also available.

The TV has UHD (4K) resolution, so it can take advantage of the latest Netflix or Amazon box sets, and the new generation of gaming consoles too. It's also HDR-compatible, so it can display content with the new High Dynamic Range encoding. Like most Samsung screens, colours are bright and blacks are dark, and are well above the standard of most competitors in this regard. Images look good in daylight or night viewing, with plenty of contrast and shadow detail in evidence.

50 inches is a big screen by any standards, so any defects in picture quality are likely to show themselves. We'd point out that the peak brightness isn't enough to take full advantage of HDR content, and you may not even notice much difference between HDR and standard content on this screen. Motion issues can be apparent when watching sport or action films, as the screen has a relatively slow 50Hz refresh rate. And viewing angles are restricted too, so if you sit off-centre, you'll notice that the brightness and contrast start to fade.

But all of these factors are to be expected in a low-end TV, and we still think that the MU6100 offers extraordinary good value. If you want a more premium build and a slightly better picture quality, the 49-inch MU6400 is available for not much more.
