Samsung UE50KU6000 review

 Review: June 2016

Rating: 4 stars

In a nutshell: If a 50-inch 4K TV for under 700 from a major brand-name sounds good to you, then you'll like the Samsung UE50KU6000. This TV has all the latest features: HDR-compatibility, Amazon and Netflix streaming, and all the latest Samsung apps. Sports fans may find motion blur to be an issue however.

Best buy: Samsung UE50KU6000 from Electrical Experience (£549.99)

Samsung KU6000 review

This is a short summary of our detailed 40-inch Samsung KU6000 review. The 40-inch and 50-inch models are identical apart from size.

The Samsung UE50KU6000 is a smart-looking TV with a black plastic bezel and matching Y-shaped stand. It comes with a standard remote control, and is A-rated for energy efficiency.

This TV sits at the bottom of Samsung's Series 6 mid-range models, but even so it comes with a lot of high-end features. It's a UHD screen, capable of displaying 4K content, and is even compatible with the new High Dynamic Range (HDR) standard. This means that it can read the extra information encoded in HDR source material, relating to bright highlights within each scene.

The dynamic range of this TV is impressive, and it's able to show a huge amount of shadow detail. However, motion clarity is less impressive. This is a 50Hz screen, and Samsung's Auto motion Plus system is able to replicate an effective motion rate of 100Hz, but that's not as fast as we'd like when it comes to watching sport or action, especially on a screen this big. Viewing angles are also restricted, so if you sit too far off-centre, the colours start to grey out and fade.

If you're looking for better picture quality, then check out our Samsung KU6400 review for a truly outstanding mid-range TV.

3D is also missing from this TV, as Samsung has dropped it from its entire 2016 range.

However, for the money, we think this is an excellent TV, especially since it includes Samsung's outstanding Tizen-based Smart TV system. The system is very comprehensive and easy to use, whether you're browsing the Electronic Programme Guide (EPG), Catch-up TV, or one of the many apps available, including Netflix and Amazon Instant Video.

Overall, the KU6000 is a very good buy if you're searching for a big TV on a small budget. We expect the price to drop as low as £600 as Christmas 2016 draws near, making it exceptional value for money. A few years ago you might have paid this much money for a 40-inch screen!

Black flickering on left side of screen?

Asked by Mark Roy from uk on 29th Nov 2016
Recently purchased this TV and very happy with it. Only problem is a split second black flicker that randomly appears on the screen sometimes a few times a minute or sometimes every few minutes. Does anyone have the same issue? I am contacting Samsung as I believe this is a fault.

Thanks in advance.

In breif, the pros are: high contrast (almost as impressive as my old plasma), amazing detail and colour replication and a screen that is satisfyingly bright.

Cons are: optimal viewing angles are too narrow, but not majorly upsetting. Some light bleed, but again nothing to cry over (nonetheless impressive given how the edge lighting has to diffuse through the whole panel). Contrast can be a little severe at times, particularly when the light areas are very bright (again, used to a plasma I demand alot in this aspect). Slight motion blur.

Overall, Samsung have demonstrated just what can be achieved by developing edge lighting technology, as this TV seems worlds apart from the hazy, dull beginnings that made consumers think twice about replacing their conventional ccfl lcd sets.
