Samsung UE46F6800 review
The UE46F6800 is the 46 inch version of the UE40F6800 Series 6 LED TV from Samsung that we reviewed previously. Our conclusion for the 40 inch model was that it's one of the stand-outs in Samsung's bewilderingly vast 2013 range, and is an excellent family-sized TV. The case for the 46 inch model is even stronger. While the RRP may be an eye-watering £1,229.99, competitive pricing among retailers means that you can pick up this 46 inch beauty for under £1,000 and at that price the 46F6800 really starts to shine.
We're not going to review it in detail here - see our review of the 40-incher for more information - but in summary the F6800 has a very distinctive and contemporary design, featuring a super narrow bezel and a transparent edge around the screen plus a stylish "branch" design stand with Y-shaped feet.
Picture quality is one of the best we've seen from an LED TV at this price, with plenty of brightness, high contrast, little evidence of clouding and a reasonably fast response rate. Pro gamers may hanker after a faster screen, and viewing angles are a little tight, but as an all-round family entertainment centre it delivers the goods. It also performs pretty well in 3D, with two pairs of active 3D glasses included, and a mostly flicker-free experience.
The Smart TV features are simply superb, with a new user-friendly graphical user interface with a touchpad remote control making it very easy to use. One of the highlights is catch-up TV via the BBC iPlayer, BBC Sport, ITV Player, the 4oD service from Channel 4, and Demand 5 from Channel 5. You'll also find staples like LoveFilm, Skype, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and others. Samsung's new "S Recommendation" system suggests interesting programmes based on your viewing history, and the whole Smart TV system is a centrepiece of the TV's appeal.
Connectivity is excellent, with Freeview HD and Freesat HD tuners built in, 4 HDMI ports, 3 USBs, ethernet and built-in Wi-Fi. A range of other connections are also included, making it possible to connect to most devices around the home.
Essentially this is a TV that looks the part and does the business, and at a price that's not off the rails. It's certainly a much better buy than the Series 7 46-inch model which offers more refined picture quality but fails to convince us that it's worth nearly twice as much as the F6800!
