Samsung UE40F7000 review

 Review: May 2013

Rating: 4 stars

In a nutshell: Samsung's beautiful 40 inch Series 7 TV offers fantastic viewing quality and class-leading Smart TV but comes at a premium price.

Review

The Samsung UE40F7000 is the 40 inch version of the 2013 Series 7 TV that we previously reviewed in its 46 inch incarnation. Read our detailed review of the 46 inch model for full details.

Premium design

The 40 inch model may not have quite the wow factor of the 46 inch monster, but it's still a gorgeous TV to look at. The ultraslim panel with a very narrow edge bezel combines with the brushed metallic base, illuminated Samsung logo below the screen and the pop-up camera at the top to deliver an impressive premium product that will grace any room.

Picture quality

Picture quality is close to perfection. With a high contrast PVA screen, fast 800 Clear Motion Rate and clever LED backlighting, the Series 7 delivers a performance that's very close to the Series 8 flagship model. Whether its high-def or standard def, sport or movies, the F7000 delivers impressive results. The TV is suitable for PS3 and Xbox gamers too, although a little lag is noticeable.

3D

3D performance is also top quality, with virtually no flickering or crosstalk effects in evidence. Two pairs of active 3D glasses are included in the sales package.

Audio quality

Audio quality from the twin speakers is typical for a slimline TV. You'll have no problems with dialogue, but a lack of punch in the bass notes makes action movies sound rather flat. As always, a separate soundbar or full 5.1 speaker system will provide noticeably improved audio quality.

Smart TV

Smart TV is the area that has most improved in Samsung's 2013 line-up of TVs. The presentation is particularly user-friendly, and the functionality has also been ramped up. The range of apps available through Samsung Apps has been updated to include catch-up TV via the BBC iPlayer, BBC Sport, ITV Player, the 4oD service from Channel 4, and Demand 5 from Channel 5. You'll also find staples like LoveFilm, Skype, Twitter and others.

Social media are fully integrated into the Smart TV system, so you can keep up with your facebook and twitter feeds and watch your friends' videos.

The "S Recommendation" system suggests programmes based on your viewing history.

The TV comes with two remote controls - a conventional remote, plus a smart remote with a touch pad for scrolling through the menus. The TV can also handle voice recognition and gesture-based controls. A quad-core processor means that the graphically-intensive user interface flies along without any frustrating pauses.

The TV also includes a slot in the back where you can plug in a Smart Evolution kit to upgrade your TV with future smart tech.

Connectivity

The UE40F7000 retains all of the connectivity options of the Series 8. There are no fewer than 4 HDMI ports plus 3 USBs. You can connect to the internet via the ethernet port or the built-in Wi-Fi. You can stream photos, music and movies from DLNA-compatible devices such as a PC or smartphone. Samsung’s AllShare creates a wireless home network for you to enjoy content from all Samsung compatible devices. If you own a Samsung tablet or smartphone, then this is a good reason to choose a Samsung TV to go with them. Built-in Freeview HD and Freesat HD tuners are included too.

Conclusion - excellent but expensive

The 2013 Series 7 TVs are excellent but they command a premium price. The RRP is £1,200 but we think it should be priced at around £1,000 or less.

While the UE40F7000 certainly delivers the goods, being in every respect a premium product, it's really very expensive for a 40 inch television.
