Samsung UE40ES6710 review
|Review: November 2012|
In a nutshell: A fully-featured mid-range 3D TV with designer looks, good picture quality and Smart TV.
Design & looks
The Samsung's Series 6 TVs retain the sleek modern look of the Series 5 models, but with a modified quad stand. They look good from the front, with a narrow bezel, and just as good from the side, with a depth of just 47mm. The ES6710 has a distinctive white colour to the frame and a matching remote control.
Check out the specs of the UE40ES6710 and you might wonder why it costs the best part of a hundred quid more than the UE40ES6300? The only difference is a faster refresh rate and something called "micro dimming". Is that worth the money, you wonder?
Well, the answer is yes, because these two improvements upgrade the "fair" picture quality of the cheaper model to "good".
The UE40ES6710 has a refresh rate (Clear Motion Rate) of 400, which is fast. Fast enough that you probably won't be able to spot any kind of motion blur, even when playing games or watching fast action sport.
The local dimming feature enables this edgelit LED TV to darken the backlighting locally in dark scenes, so dark parts of the picture come out nice and black, with no light leaking from brighter parts of the screen. There's no evidence of clouding, and the contrast ratio is excellent.
If there's one small fault with the picture quality, it's that the viewing angles are rather tight, so if you sit off-centre you'll notice a slight colour shift and a fading. This is the case with most Samsung LED TVs, and the UE40ES6710 is no worse than the others.
This is one of the best TVs in this price range for overall picture quality, and you can buy it with confidence.
This is a 3D ready TV and two pairs of active shutter glasses are included in the sales package. That's good news, as extra glasses can be quite expensive, which is something to factor in if you're kitting out the whole family. 3D image quality is excellent on this TV, with active shutter glasses having the benefit of full HD 3D. There's no evidence of the "ghosting" that affects some active shutter 3D TVs.
Audio quality is no better or worse than most other slimline TVs. The problem is that there's just no space in the design for big speakers. Although the TV has Dolby Digital and SRS TheatreSound HD, it's only capable of reproducing middle frequencies with any clarity, so action movies in particular fall flat. If you're into movies, you'd be wise to consider adding a soundbar or a 5.1 home cinema system.
All TVs in the ES range are equipped with Samsung's Smart TV. Samsung’s updated Smart Hub brings you access to features like youtube, facebook, twitter, web browsing and apps. Family Story lets you share special photos, messages and events with loved ones. A separately-sold Skype camera kit lets you make video calls via your TV.
Connectivity is the same as with the other Series 6 models and is outstanding. A key selling point is the built-in Wi-Fi, which can be used to connect to your home router for internet access. It also allows you to stream movies, photos and other content from DLNA-compatible devices such as a PC or smartphone. An ethernet cable can also be connected.
In addition, the TV has multiple connections for all kinds of audiovisual equipment, including 3 HDMI ports and no fewer than 3 USBs. Connectivity is very much a strength of this model.
It also has a Freeview HD tuner and the welcome bonus of Freesat HD as well.
Conclusion - an excellent television
The UE40ES6710 is an excellent 40 inch TV, and one that we can confidently recommend. It's a great looking television, benefiting from a slimline profile and distinctive white styling.
It's equally good when switched on, offering good picture quality with nice dark blacks, and good 3D performance too. Only the relatively narrow viewing angle lets it down.
The TV also has outstanding connectivity, with built-in Wi-Fi and both Freeview HD and Freesat HD. Samsung Smart TV offers plenty of functionality and completes the package.

One can only enjoy ALONE all the nice features of the 40es6710 sitting in the central viewing angle.
If you want to invite guests to watch a soccer game or a nice movie, think first how to put them all and yourself in the tight central place (1 meter large/3 meters from the TV). If you find a way how to do it please tell it to me and then buy this TV...if not, DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!
The viewing angles are disappointing! No body tells you how bad in this problem until you buy the TV. How can Samsung do that?
