Samsung UE40ES6300 review
|Review: November 2012|
In a nutshell: A good mid-range TV with smart looks, Smart TV, Wi-Fi and 3D. Picture quality is fair, but not the best at this price.
Design & looks
Samsung's Series 6 TVs retain the sleek modern look of the Series 5 models, but with a modified quad stand. They look good from the front, with a narrow bezel, and just as good from the side, with a depth of just 47mm.
The picture quality is definitely improved over the UE40ES5500, but it's still not the best. The PVA LCD panel is capable of producing quite deep blacks - almost to plasma levels - but the lack of local dimming in the LED backlighting means that scenes that include a mix of light and dark tend to come out rather grey, with light leaking from light pixels into dark. The overall effect can be muddy. Viewing angles are also rather tight, so if you're not sitting directly in front of the screen, you'll notice colour variations and further milkiness creeping into the picture.
On a positive note, the 200 Clear Motion Rate is fast enough to eliminate any observable motion artifacts, and the Game Mode makes this a good choice for gamers.
The Series 6 TVs have the benefit of 3D, and two pairs of active shutter glasses are included. That's good news, as extra glasses can be quite expensive, which is something to factor in if you're kitting out the whole family. 3D image quality is generally good on this TV, with active shutter glasses having the benefit of full HD 3D. However, some crosstalk is evident from time to time, leading to a slight ghosting effect.
As with most slimline TVs, audio quality could be better. To be fair, the UE40ES6300 is no better or worse than most others. Whilst the TV is equipped with Dolby Digital and SRS TheatreSound HD, the weedy speakers fail to deliver either high- or low- frequencies. This is OK for listening to the news, but movies lack any sense of oomph.
All TVs in the ES range are equipped with Samsung's Smart TV. Samsung’s updated Smart Hub brings you access to features like youtube, facebook, twitter, web browsing and apps. Family Story lets you share special photos, messages and events with loved ones. A separately-sold Skype camera kit lets you make video calls via your TV.
A key selling point of the TV is its built-in Wi-Fi, which can be used to connect to your home router for internet access. It also allows you to stream movies, photos and other content from DLNA-compatible devices such as a PC or smartphone. An ethernet cable can also be connected.
In addition, the TV has multiple connections for all kinds of audiovisual equipment, including 3 HDMI ports and no fewer than 3 USBs. Connectivity is very much a strength of this model.
It also has a Freeview HD tuner and the welcome bonus of Freesat HD as well.
Conclusion - a good all-rounder
The UE40ES6300 is a good all-rounder at a sensible price. The picture quality is fair, with a fast response time, but sometimes lacking contrast and with tighter viewing angles than we'd like. 3D viewing is a nice feature to have, even though 3D performance isn't perfect.
The TV itself looks great, and has outstanding connectivity, with built-in Wi-Fi and both Freeview HD and Freesat HD. Samsung Smart TV is nice to have, and you feel like you're getting reasonable value for money here.
