Samsung UE32F6800 review
|Review: June 2013|
In a nutshell: The Samsung UE32F6800 is an excellent television with its striking contemporary design, superb Smart TV and the best picture quality of any 32 inch Samsung we've reviewed.
We recently asked the question, "which is the best 40 inch Samsung TV of 2013?" and decided that the answer was the Samsung UE40F6800, thanks to its combination of good looks, superb Smart TV and above-average picture quality. Now we're asking the same question for the 32 inch category, and once again the answer is the F6800 model. There was a moment of doubt, when the RRP of the 32 inch model was announced as £779.99, which is ridiculous for a 32 inch telly, but now that prices in the shops have fallen to less than £600, we can confidently declare that the UE32F6800 is the best.
Design & looks
In a world where every TV tends to look the same, the F6800 has a refreshingly different design. It's an attractively slim TV with a very contemporary "branch" design stand with Y-shaped feet. A super narrow bezel and a transparent edge complete the modern look.
The F6800 looks good when it's switched off, but it looks even better when it's switched on. The reason why this is the standout model of Samsung's 32 inch range is that it's head and shoulders above the cheaper models when it comes to the core function of a television - displaying moving pictures faithfully and with as much detail as possible.
Contrast ratios are improved and the dynamic range is much higher. In short, dark areas stay dark and bright areas stay bright, and the amount of detail visible increases enormously.
The screen is very bright and has a fast 400 Clear Motion Rate, making it suitable for sport and action movies. Games Mode minimises input lag, making it a good choice for gamers too.
Viewing angles can be a little tight, but this is noticeable only if you move several feet to the left or right of centre. In this case, a little fading of colours can be observed.
The F6800 is 3D capable and uses active 3D, which ensures that full 1080p high definition is viewed in its native resolution. Two pairs of active 3D glasses are included with the TV and 3D performance is generally good. Some occasional crosstalk or flicker may be evident when watching certain films.
Audio quality is typical for a slimline TV, that's to say it's good enough for watching regular TV, but you'll notice a lack of depth and bass when watching any kind of action movie. Lack of punch in the speakers means that mid-range frequencies are reproduced well enough (e.g. for dialogue), but bass in particular is weak.
For best results, as always, a separate soundbar or full 5.1 speaker system will noticeably improve audio quality.
Samsung has overhauled its Smart TV system for 2013 and the new version has much improved functionality and is very easy to use thanks to the new graphical user interface.
First of all, the range of apps available through Samsung Apps has been updated to include catch-up TV via the BBC iPlayer, BBC Sport, ITV Player, the 4oD service from Channel 4, and Demand 5 from Channel 5. You'll also find staples like LoveFilm, Skype, Twitter and others.
Secondly, social media are fully integrated into the Smart TV system, so you can keep up with your facebook and twitter feeds and watch your friends' videos.
Even selecting programmes to watch has evolved, with the "S Recommendation" system suggesting programmes based on your viewing history. You may not ever need to scroll through listings again, as the system does its best to bring interesting programmes to your attention.
To make best use of the new-style interface, you might like to try the touchpad smart remote that is designed for navigating through the new menus and icons. The smart remote also enables voice commands, although we feel that this is mostly a gimmick. A conventional second remote control is also included for those who prefer traditional ways of doing things.
Connectivity is excellent, with Freeview HD and Freesat HD tuners built in, 4 HDMI ports, 3 USBs, ethernet and built-in Wi-Fi. A range of other connections are also included, making it possible to connect to most devices around the home.
Conclusion - the best 32 inch Samsung TV
It may feel like a lot to spend on a 32 inch TV, but it's worth it if you are looking for top picture quality. The best way to see this for yourself is to watch the F6800 next to one of the cheaper Series 4 or Series 5 models. Look at the amount of detail that is visible in darker regions of the scene. Notice the lack of motion blur as objects move around the screen. In short, enjoy watching a decent TV picture instead of a substandard one.
If you can't tell the difference, or don't care, then save some money and opt for the cheaper UE32F5500 model, but you'll also be missing out on the designer looks and 3D capability of the F6800.
Other key selling points of the F6800 are the brilliant Smart TV, the wide range of connectivity options, including built-in Wi-Fi, the Freeview HD and Freesat HD tuners and the choice of remote controls.

The price of this set makes the product bordering on the ridiculas and a complete waste of money.
There is nothing wrong with either the 5500 or the 6200 Samsung tv's in fact the prices have come down considerably make these sets absolutely outstanding value for your hard earned money . Don't take my word for this go and check them out at your local store now.
You never know I may be the honest sales person who happily serves you. Happy shopping.
