Samsung U600 Review
Phone rating:
In a nutshell: The U600 is the slimmest slide phone ever, measuring
an astonishing 10.9mm thickness. Yet it's a high-spec phone featuring
a 3 megapixel camera with flash and autofocus, and a fully-featured
music player with expandable memory to replace your MP3 player. The
only thing that may put some people off is the touch sensitive buttons
- but sometimes you have to suffer a little to look good! Available
in dark silver, red, pink, blue, chrome and black & gold.
Review: April 2007.
The Samsung U600 is the first of the second-generation Ultra phones
to hit the shops and is the replacement for the enormously popular Samsung
D900 ultra-slim slide phone. At just 10.9 mm it's even thinner than
the D900, making it the slimmest slide phone available (now beaten by
the Samsung E840!). As well as making
it thinner, Samsung have shaved a couple of millimetres off the width
of the phone, which is a very welcome improvement, as flat wide phones
are not as ergonomic to use as conventionally-sized phones. It's also
10g lighter than the D900, making it an extremely lightweight phone
indeed. You can hardly feel the presence of this phone in a jacket pocket!
A visual makeover serves to differentiate the U600 from the D900 in
the looks department. One important change is that the external buttons
(the ones that you can see when the slide is closed) have been made
into touch-sensitive buttons (like the Samsung
E900). Touch sensitive buttons look cool, but are not to everyone's
taste - read our user reviews of the Samsung
E900 for a flavour of these! We feel that Samsung have made a mistake
here and the touch-sensitive buttons will alienate a certain percentage
of users. If you don't want to take the risk then stick with the D900
or choose the newer Samsung G600, which
are very safe choices.
Inside the phone, not a lot has changed - at least from a user's perspective.
The camera has been uprated from 3.0 to 3.2 megapixels. The battery
is less powerful than the D900's, but Samsung claim that battery performance
has actually been improved due to a new technology called OPUS (Optimized
Power Usage Solution). In our experience, the battery life is only 2-3
days. User memory has been reduced slightly from 70 Mbytes to 60 Mbytes.
The camera is excellent - Samsung's best yet - with a high-resolution
3.2 megapixel resolution, LED flash, autofocus and digital zoom. It
doesn't match the Sony Ericsson K800i
or the Nokia N95, but it's still one of
the best cameras on a phone. Our only complaint about the camera is
its slowness in taking a picture - a delay of one or two seconds means
that fast moving subjects are hard to photograph. There's also a good
quality video camera. The display is high resolution (240 x 320 pixels)
with 262,144 colours and is excellent. The music player supports a wide
range of formats - MP3, ACC, ACC+ and e-AAC+ - and has very good sound
reproduction. You can use the stereo headset supplied by Samsung or
a wireless Bluetooth
headset. You can also listen to music through the built-in loudspeaker
which features a Bang & Olufsen digital power amplifier. The player
is easy to use with playlists of up to 30 tracks. With 60 Mbytes of
user memory, you can only store around 15 music tracks, so to use your
U600 as a music player, you'll need to buy a Micro
SD card - a 512 Mbyte card costs around £15 and will enable
you to store over 100 tracks. The largest memory card possible is a
2 Gbyte card, with storage for around 500 songs. A PC data link kit
is included in the sales package, for transferring music from a PC.
Other features that we like include the messaging options, with support
for email attachments and a document viewer for viewing (but not editing)
MS Office, PDF and HTML files. We like the EDGE connection for fast
downloads, the quad band operating frequency, wireless photo printing
with PicBridge™-compatible printers and the TV-Out connector for viewing
your photos and videos directly on a TV.
Most of all, the U600 works as a lightweight, ultra-slim, look-at-me,
sexy-slider kind of phone. It's got the 3 megapixel camera and the music
player to back up the looks too. The phone isn't as user friendly as
it could have been without the touch-sensitive buttons, so we've decided
not to award the full 5 stars for the U600. A genuine 5 star phone is
the G600, which is the replacement for
the U600 and has a 5 megapixel camera and no touch-sensitive buttons.
Demand for the U600 has been sky high since launch, and this has driven
prices down. You can probably find the best bargain by starting a new
contract rather than upgrading on your existing contract (it's easy
to port your phone number to a new network). The U600 is now available
on Pay as you Go too.
The new Samsung U600 Vibe (or Samsung U600i) is the same as the U600
but features "haptics", i.e. a vibrational feedback when you
press the touch-sensitive buttons.
Features of the Samsung U600 include:
- 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, flash and 4x digital zoom
- Video camera (MPEG4 format)
- Display: TFT, 262,144 colours, 240 x 320 pixels
- Music player (MP3, ACC, ACC+, e-AAC+ formats) with digital power
amp
- 64-voice polyphonic ringtones / MP3 ringtones
- Voice memo recorder
- Integrated handsfree speakerphone
- Messaging: SMS, MMS, email (POP3, SMTP, IMAP4, SSL, TLS)
- T9 predictive text
- Document viewer for MS Office, PDF and HTML files
- Mobile printing via Bluetooth (PicBridge™)
- Java games
- Flight mode
- Personal organiser functions
- Memory: 60 Mbytes plus MicroSD memory card slot (expandable to 2
Gbytes)
- Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0, TV-Out
- WAP 2.0, GPRS Class 10, EDGE
- Quad band

Brilliant phone. Ive had it just over a week and i love it! I was originally
going to go for an E900 but im so glad i went for the U600. Smooth,
ultra slim slider (you wont believe how thin it is until you see it),
sleek design and really excellent functions. Yes the battery life is
not as good as other phones but that might be because you can't put
it down!! Touch sensitive keys are great but i think are better suited
to women rather than men (sorry guys!!)I loved the motorola that i had
before this and was worried about the change-over but i had nothing
to worry about, i'll definitely stay with Samsung for my next phone.
Dont listen to the bad reviews - buy this phone, you'll not regret it.

I've had this phone for a week now and I'm going to exchange it for
either an N73 or k810i. The U600 main bad points are: 1. Terrible battery
life. I need to charge it every day. Same usage on a K800 and I charged
it every 3 days. 2. Texting is a nightmare. The predictive text software
is awful. When given a list of possible words sometimes you have to
scroll up, other times you have to scroll down. Why? 3. The touch sensitive
buttons are great in theory but are not practical. Quite a number of
times I've accidentally dialled someone while reading their text. Then
you've got to quickly unlock the keypad and hang-up before the call
is connected. This is beginning to become a real pain. ********** DO
NOT BUY THE U600 **********

1) I have to charge mine once a week. 2) Don't use predictive if you
don't like it just turn it off. 3) You have to be an idiot to manage
to phone someone whilst reading a text.

I tried using the Samsung Bluetooth WEP-100 stereo headset, it says
play via stereo bluetooth. Yes, then it requires us to search for the
stereo headset even though it had already been paired and authorised.
It then marked the headset as Main but no actions to transfer the music
(in Music Player mode) I had used the same headset on Nokia N95 and
Sony Eric W880i and K810i and all performed instantaneously, without
any hassle. please clarify why cant be simple like those models?

Just received my U600 and am pleased at the improvements Samsung have
made to my previous phone the E900. At last on a Samsung, you can now
use your own sounds for message alert, the ringer now supports vibrate
and melody at the same time, messages are automatically saved and you
now have a choice of clocks - which means you can go without the standard
Samsung clock bar which is a permanent feature on earlier phones your
mates may still have. For those - who I see from existing reviews -
are gettting used to the touch-sensitive keys and moaning about inadvertently
ringing numbers can I offer a workround which I used successfully on
my E900 and which works on this phone. Simply go to your Call log and
delete all 'Recent Contacts'. Next time you brush over the phone key
you will simply get a dialogue box on screen saying 'Call log empty'.
Note this does not affect your Missed Calls, Dialled Calls, Received
Calls or Sent Messages - these are all still there in their own section
to be accessed at any time you need them. I have added Call Log to 'My
Menu' so you can easily jump to it and delete.Voila!

Very sturdy, the inside mech is metal. The slight wobble is not a weakness
just movement in the metal track. Music player on mine does not see
the 1gb mem card .. so no tunes will load - maybe I'm doing something
wrong! can see then from the file app, but will only play 1 at a time,
can't mark multiple tracks ... WHY? Everything else at this early stage

AS THIS USES A LOT OF BATTERY LIFE, ALSO TURN OFF KEY PAD LIGHTS DURING

Great phone! U can't end a call by brushing your face agianst the touch
sensitive buttons becasue they are locked as soon as the call starts!
Why do people whine about cameras? they are a gimmick and as they go
the one in this is quite reasonable. The nokia N95 is hopless as a camera
and so are all sony ericssons. Just go out and buy a proper camera.
I don't care how many megapixels these cameras have it is the physical
size of the sensor that is what counts which is why DSLRs are so big.
Also the lenses on camera phones are hopeless. I don't care if it says
Carl Zeiss (nokia) on it it is far to small to be effective or make
any difference to the overall quality. Until they put a hotshoe on a
camera phone it is not worth having a flash xenon or otherwise. Also
the U600 is well built...don't worry about it falling apart. Buy a phone
for making calls or if you are too cheap to buy an iPod and you want
it to look good

be bothered copying all my numbers one-by-one off my sim card as it
doesn't allow you to select all. Have exchanged for the Nokia N95 which
I'm hoping is a more sturdy, easier to use bit of kit.

avoid this phone at all costs! its a terrible bit of kit from samsung,
i have just returned mine to t-mobile as i gave up on it after only
2 days. the build quality is shocking, very flimsy upper section when
slid open, feels like it could snap at any time. when making calls the
touch sensitive buttons are annoying at best. you will catch them on
your face and end a call, this happened to me 3 or 4 times before i
came close to taking a hammer to it. and don't think the camera is anything
to get excited about cos it ain't, if your looking at this handset and
thinking 'well i'd like an ericsson K800i but i think there a bit too
bulky for me, the samsung looks nice and compact and still has a good
camera'............believe me it doesn't, the ericsson is bulky for
good reason. its fitted with genuine camera parts. the led flash on
this samsung is poor and will not illuminate low light scenes to anywhere
near the standard of the ericsson with its xenon flash. anyway, i'm
not writing a camera phone review. i just want to warn people that this
phone is not of the quality samsung would like you to believe it is.
i would say they've cut some huge corners with it and really rushed
it through production to try and get something new out in the market.
its very plastic, very flimsy. just avoid it.

I recently purchased this handset as a second fone. I did have the e900
and what an awful, badly though out mobile that was. The u600 is not
just an e900 rebadged with a new cover and name ,as other people have
said ! This fone come on leaps and bounds. I dont think many fones with
touch keys will surpass the LG Choc edition, but this one comes pretty
close. A couple of things I dont think was a good idea tho. To finish
or take a call if you dont want to slide the handset up you have to
press the 'i' button and then press the take and end buttons to complete
the call. To turn the handset off it's a pain having to press the power
button or open the slide and then press the power button. The battery
life is not as good as some and if you like playing with its well supplied
specs then you will find yourself charging it up every other day, buts
thats the case of many handsets now. Personally I think the wallpaper
with animations on it {u know the one im talking about, houses of parliment
with birds, planes, shooting stars, fireworks etc} looks really good and
shows off the handsets screen but must be a battery drain ! samsung
is well known for its handsets giving a chime or bleep at every action
performed on its handsets so im really glad this edition lets u turn
off all that background noise. All in all a good slider and good upgrade
from the e900 and d900. For those with t9 issues etc take it to a carfone
warehouse for a firmware upgrade as this would resolve your issues hopefully.

Awesome looking phone, HQ autofocus camera, 2GB of MP3s that can be
played in background mode (with a decent microSD card, but their quite
cheap in HongKong), finally a playlist that includes ALL songs, or most
played, or just a personal selection. Of course vibration and melody
with these latest models, and now also selectable messaging sounds (finally!).
Haven't discovered the UGo function yet (switching backgrounds in different
countries?), nor the average time before recharging, but do not expect
that to be as long as for example the D600. The comment about the touch
sensative keypad can be taken lightly, it's very easy to get used to.
The impressive screen size (2.2") aint mentioned in the review, neither
the stereo FM functionality (Samsung's introduction on a high spec popular
phone?). Feels almost as slim as the X820, but comes with better camera,
expandable memory and improved software / usability and screen. Can
the upcoming Z370 match this phone? Or is it in a different league?
Definitly one of my favorite phones ever, together with the D600 (reliability)
and X820 (looks)

What a disappointment!Having had a Samsung for over 4 years, most recent
being the D600, I was really looking forward to getting the U600. I
wanted a phone that gave high quality photos (as did the D600), but
without the bulkiness. The 3.2 megapixel U600 seemed to have it all!
Here are the things it has going for it: 1.Sleek, stylish design, slimmer
than any other mobile and brilliant slider. 2.Huge colour screen, with
sharp bright (sunlight sensitive) screen. 3.FM Radio (The D600 doesn't!)
4.Micro SD card slot (expandable memory) 5.Funky wallpaper/fonts etc
Apart from that, I found lots of irritations with the U600, so much
so, I returned it after only one day! Here are the downsides: 1.Touch
sensitive selection buttons on front, that are so sensitive, you often
'delete'or 'lose' what you are doing/typing (or select something you
didn't mean to!)that's THE most irritating thing about it 2.The phone
is so 'slim' and delicate that I think one clumsy drop (not like the
robus D600!!) and the whole thing would smash into pieces. 3.Texting
not for anyone with normal sized fingers or bigger! Very difficult to
text with one hand. 4.Sound (voice) incoming, very 'tinny' and lacked
'bass'. 5.Message tone can only be chose from one of some 13+ on the
phone. All are horribly 'tinkly' and certainly not anything I would
choose for a text alert tone! 6.Quality of photos and video not as good
as D600 (very surprising!), especially in anything other than day;light,
even after tweaking all the relevant exposure settings etc. 7.Text,
by default has this 'quick text'option allowing you to choose someone
from your directory quickly, but actually being more of a hinderance
that a help! 8.Most of the Java games were demo only, what a con! 9.Slim
phone=slim battery. Battery life very very small! Don't expect to have
lots of charge left at the end of a day using the mobile 3 or 4 times
(longer calls tho) So that's it! Essentially if you only want looks,
this is the phone for you! If you need something practical for everyday
use, choose something else! I'm ordering a Sony K810i! Watch this space
for a review of it!

is terrible about a day and half after charge and if you use the camera
even less also feel that construction is a bit flimsy when opened it
rocks about a bit. Contacted T Mobile about problem and they were unable

I got this phone as an upgrade to my Song Ericsson W810i which I thought
would be hard to beat. My first problem with the U600 is the touch sensitve
keys which were a pain at first, as they kept ringing people in my contacts
by accident, but I have got past that. they also can accidentally close
a text message whilst you're typing it without saving it. In terms of
functionality, the phone is great, but the personal organiser is too
complicated to use and you cannot set recurring appointments. the 3.2
megapixel camera is good for photos but the quality feels worse for
videos than my old W810i which only had a 2 Megapixel camera. The Samsung
PC studio software is awful. it si difficult to use, and fails to convert
various mpeg4 files to 3gp correctly, so can only be played on the samsung

Im onto my second U600. The first one's slide was very loose and wobbly
and the touch sensitive keys seemed overly sensitive. However the second
on is spot on. Feels much sturdier when opening/closing the slide and
the keys are much better. You can have the ringtone playing music and
vibrating at the same time but not the message tone although samsung
have finally sorted it so that you can have any downloaded tones as
your msg tone (at last). The radio is a nice extra and the mp3 is great
if you get a 3,5mm audio adapter so you can use your own earphones.
Im getting about 3 days usage out of my battery which is good but I
have charged it fully 3 times after letting the battery drain completely.
The only thing I am a little disappointed in is the camera/camcorder.

I went to CarphoneWarehouse and played around with the Samsung U600
for about 15 minutes. My quick conclusion, the operating system was
quite sluggish and when the touch buttons were pressed, you sometimes
think, did i touch the button properly or not? The pressure required
for the touch buttons is not much, but i ended up pressing the buttons
too hard, because i had a few instances where i touched the buttons
and i did not receive a response from the phone. All in all, i was going
to buy the phone sim free but to be honest, in my opinion the phone
is 'definitely' NOT worth £200. Existing users of the phone may say
that you can get 'used' to the phone very quickly, but in my opinion,
i could not see myself using the phone 6 months down the line. Note:
I am aware i only used the Samsung U600 for a short amount of time,
so do NOT flame as this post is my personal opinion however, buyers
beware, TEST the phone before you buy, because before i went into the
shop, i was convinced it was the right phone for me, when i came out,
it was clearly not what i expected. *Rated the phone '4 stars' for the
design and NOT for the usability. I would give usability 3 stars. Functionality
would get 4 stars from me.*

U600's positive features are already mentioned so let me share the downsides
of this lovely phones according to my own experience. absolutely agreed
with the official review - the touch screen is not very user friendly
even though I already am familiar with unimpressed LG Chocolate's touch
screen, (which is the most attractive & worst phone I've ever used).
The touch screen is not for right-handed serious/light gamers, often
(more than often) pressed the Exit button by mistake, & exited from
the very exciting Timer Rider II game or any other games! ( I am getting
used to it after 2 days of gaming winning the entire mission! :) I can't
find a hanging loop anywhere on the phone & worried it might easily
slipped from my hands without the phone chain! the settings are not
as detailed & customizable like sony ericsson's the quad band is a thumbs
up! N extremely light so more balanced and slightly easier to text than
other slide phones as well. As for all slide phones, texting is not
as smooth & swift as that of in ordinary phones. When texting, the next
mode after T9's Abc is not T9's abc, but 'number 123'. And when inputting
names for contacts, the small letters doesn't change to capital letters
after typing space. These are identical to LG chocolate's user-unfriendly
functions. the graphite housing definitely looks cooler than traditional
black. outstanding phone for man especially ladies who want a slightly
colored samsung phone. Finally, for a cool, lightweight & stylish phone
in the current mobile phones market, it's the best!

a result to start with. A friend has the d900 so had an idea of what
to expect. It arrived yesterday and is very very thin, nice shape and
feel, not as wide as the d900 and very light. The instructions are very
vague so you are on your own a bit, but the basic functions are easy
to work out. The phone does feel a bit delicate, and the top slider
does wobble a bit, but, its a very special phone, feels expensive and
pretty WOW, so you have to treat it with kindness and respect. If you
want a brick to through around, get a nokia! Camera is stunning on high
