Samsung Steel Review
Phone rating:
In a nutshell: The Steel is a Vodafone-exclusive handset with
premium looks. With a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, a music player,
FM radio, 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and support for 8 GB memory cards it will tick
a lot of people's boxes. On the negative side it lacks a camera flash,
battery life is below average and the phone has a tendency to freeze
or switch itself off.
Review: September 2008. Updated May 2009.
The Samsung Steel is a Vodafone-exclusive phone. It looks like a premium
phone, with its steel body and smart appearance, but actually it's priced
in the entry-level category and is available free on contract for as
low as £15. The Steel gives you the looks of the Samsung
Soul at a fraction of the cost! The Steel isn't a touchscreen-operated
device like the Soul, but is a conventional slider with a nice solid
feel and an easy-to-use conventional keypad. The display is a generous
2.2 inches across, making it one of the biggest displays in this type
of phone.
The Steel has some great features, including high-speed HSDPA giving
7.2 Mbps download speeds over the 3G network. A front-facing camera
enables video calling, whilst the main rear-mounted camera is better
than you'd expect in this price range: it's a 3.2 megapixel camera with
autofocus, although it's lacking a flash. There's a music player, and
an FM radio too. The 30 Mbytes of internal memory lets you store around
half a dozen MP3 tracks, but you can add a memory card of up to 8 GB
capacity.
Vodafone are quoting a battery life of 23 days, but this is an absurd
figure. In reality the Steel doesn't have a particularly good battery
life: most users will have to charge every other day we would guess.
In summary, the Samsung Steel has the looks of a high-end phone, mid-range
features and an entry-level price point. If you can live with the battery
life and the lack of a camera flash, then it's a great buy. Just one
further addition - several of our users have complained that the Steel
freezes or randomly switches off, so take this into consideration before
buying. The new Samsung S7330 may be
a better choice, although it's exclusive to 3, and the Samsung
Soul is worth a look now that its price has come down considerably.
Features of the Samsung Steel include:
- 3G with video calling and 7.2 Mbps HSDPA
- 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and 3x digital zoom
- Video recording
- Second video camera for video calling
- Display: TFT, 262K colours, 240 x 320 pixels (2.2 inches)
- Music player
- FM radio
- 64-voice polyphonic ringtones / MP3 ringtones
- Integrated handsfree speakerphone
- Personal organiser functions
- Memory: 30 Mbytes plus MicroSD memory card slot (expandable to 8
GB)
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB
- WAP 2.0, GPRS Class 10, EDGE, 3G HSDPA
- Triband (900/1800/1900 MHz) plus 3G (UMTS)
- Size: 104 x 49 x 14 mm
- Weight: 109g
- Talktime: 296 minutes
- Battery standby: 568 hours

i've had 3 of these phones now and they all ended up breaking. i dont
use it often, as it is always switched off when im at work 5 days a
week. on the 1st phone the speaker broke, i couldnt hear anybody during
calls, and the top keypad became unresponsive. i sent it back and got
it fixed. then the screen started blanking, or showing strange coloured
lines when it was flipped up or down. as it was past a year, i couldnt
get it fixed so got a new one instead. after a year or so, the screen
broke again, completely blacking out when flipped up or down. i really
like the way this phone works, the feel and the look of it, so i decided
to get another 1. ive had this 1 less than 2 months now, and the screen
has once again started blacking out. i dont think it is a coincidence
that all 3 phones have had the exact same problem. its a shame, because
if it wasnt for that unbearable fault, it would be an excellent phone.

in the sunlight :-) when you can't see the screen, but any way I got
it out of the draw today and decided to try it once more - guess what
the battery has charged and it is working woo hoo:-) so I have a spare

Opera started Java. Apart from that is just runs for months without
any problem. Battery still works for a week in standby, even though,
I drive by train every day. One thing, that could be better is the calendar.
I used it as a notebook modem for a while in holiday, using UMTS connection,

Have had the Samsung Steel for nearly 2 years now. Never had any problems.
The camera is good when the environment is bright enough and samsung's
software is great for this type of phone. Also, it features lots of
handy shortcut keys and menu's which mean you dont have to fiddle your
way though the menu's. The only cons are that the back plate tends to
scratch easily and there is no camera flash. The other comments on this
page about the phone breaking are obviously due to the owners not taking
care of it. All in all, if your not looking for a smart phone, the samsung
steel is a good phone for an even better price

I've had this phone for 2 years and never had a single problem with
it (even dropped it in a puddle once and it is still working fine).
The battery still lasts a good week if nothing is done with it or about
4 days if used for internet. The only problem I have had is with the
memory (which is rarely great on mobile phones) but that can at least
be upgraded using SD (though apparently not SDHC cards as I recently
found out despite a forum saying they did work).

are easy to use and have been reliable. The good features of this phone
are: decent camera, apart from lack of flash; good battery life (I charge
it once a week); indoors it's a very good screen, large and easy to
see, but outside it's impossible to read a text due to the reflections;
strong and hardy (I've dropped it several times, trodden on it, thrown
it etc and it still worked afterwards). The only problem I've had is
that within a few days of having it, the screen just stopped working

Had this phone for about 5/6 months and haven't had the problems people
complain about. Yea sure it scrathes a little and the greasy marks show,
but what phone doesn't have those problems? Battery life is great, music
player will happily do 2 days solid, and easily lasts a week or so normally.
Only battery killer is the bluetooth, best to turn that off most of
the time. Camera isn't great, but its good enough, just be sure to get
a memory card with it. Texting is different to other phones and you
have to get used to holding it, as the weight is distributed differently
to SE's and nokia's etc, once you get used to it becomes second nature
as it does with any other phone. Liked the large screen which many people
seem to think makes the phone to big, but I'm not a fan of the little
phones most people like. For the price its an excellent buy!

I have had my Samsung Steel now for approximately 3 months and think
that it is a brilliant piece of kit. I am quite in to photography and
wanted a phone that could take decent pix at times when a camera wasn't
available. The 3.2 MP developed pix are perfectly good enough for an
album and are surprisingly difficult to determine from conventional
6mp camera developed pictures. OK so there is no flash but I very rarely
takepix in dimmly lit conditions anyway. The screen is huge and very
clear, particularly whilst viewing pix on slide-show using the wide-screen
horizontal viewing option. Probably the best feature about this phone
is the huge 8MB micro SD card that can be installed easily. I bought
one from the internet for less than £15.00and it has transformed the
steel in to nothing short of an in-depth multimedia entertainment system.
I have over 80 full mp3 music albums on file as well as numerous pictures,
videos and podcasts. This feature is just awesome, particularly in view
of having the digital radio which is crystal clear on the off chance
that I can not find a track to fit the moment. The homescreen picture
slide show is another feature worth mentioning which was a great surprise.
I have a number of my family photos revolving on the standard screen
idle display, which is great. I could go on and on about all the great
features that this phone has. I have read a vast number of reviews for
the steel and can find very little to agree with in relation to negative
points. If there is a functional problem mentioned I could almost always
tell that the person writing the review has not read the instruction
manual correctly....mind you with the amount of functions available,
it takes a while. Before I go, it is also worth mentioning that I paid
£80 for this phone. With this purchase I unexpectedly received a "free"
digital frame viewer (worth £40) and £20 top up voucher, so I effectively
paid £20 for this amazing piece of technology! Not bad eh...

an onscreen message saying 'invalid response'. As I am in my 14 day
grace period, I am considering sending the phone back.It is also worth
noting if you are looking for a good camera phone, this is not the best.
The photos in most cases tend to be blurred even with a steady hand
and there is no flash. As mentioned in previous reviews, the battery
life is also poor(absolute max you can get by without charging is 2

This phone is magiiik!! totaly love it, it slides brilliantaly, very
durable although prone to chips and scratches on its stainless steel
back. Mine has been thrown on the ground loads and still works!! Could
do with a flash but apart from that the camera is fabulous but i must
say that i am dissapointed with the video quality. Overall worth the
money though.

My first Samsung after years of SE`s. Good value for money, but one
question...with the slider shut and the screen blank do you have to
open the slider to do anything? Other Samsungs seem to have the option
to press any external key then manually unlock, but not the Steel

The samsung steel is a very reliable phone and must be very strong bein
as i have droped it tones of times. The touchpad is ok it is a bit hard
to use, i would rate the pad 6 out of 10. The phone is very stylish
and has a sleek shiny shell. This phone comes with even more like, a
music player, java games, only 109g in weight, a 3.2 megapixel camera
and a lot more.overall i would rate this phone 9 out of ten. i took
away this extra star because the touchpad is a bit of a let down if
u compare it to the rest of the phone and its quality.

and chooses when it wants to connect to your car kit, with bonus features
like - the pace of a drunken snail when scrolling through menus or contacts,
and sounding like you're at the bottom of the ocean when using your
handsfree. anyone who has two plastic cups connected by a piece of string

this phone is the best ive owned so far. Did not need to use software
supplied as windows media player picks it up and allows you to download
music using wma format easyly. Battery life is better than expected
charged last sunday and still 2 bars showing even as ive listened to
loads of music. The phone is so easy to use and get around and the sound
is great. Only problem is that it advised a dab radio built in but only
getting FM. Camera not bad but no flash but i did not buy for that reason.
This phone gets the thumbs up and at only £80 great buy

This phone is pure amazing. For starters its alot smaller then pictures
shown on the internet, the design is really nice and sleek and the mirrored
screen does not get in the way with seeing features. The screen is bright
and crystal clear. The phone is really easy to get from one place to
another, and very nice. The camera is actually brillient, and comes
with lots of handy features. Love it! Only probelm is the headphones
hurt after a while. other then that amazing.

I read as much as I could before buying a phone and decided on the Samsung
Steel. I have had it three days and am sorry to say but I am sending
it back. It looks brilliant, for a cheaper end of the market phone is
looks expensive however, there are too many annoyances. Firstly, my
main phone usage is sending texts. The space bar on this is far right
(Nokia is usually central) of the keypad. If you are left handed that
is perfect, but being right handed you have to really bend your thumb
to get to the spacebar that is not only very uncomfortable but slow
and painful. Also, it has slide movements to get to any operation which
I find slow and irritating. Finally, it is top heavy when open which
again makes texting hard work.

i've never had a samsung before only Nokias and Sony Ericssons. The Steel
is a lovely phone though and I couldn't fault it for design and features.
Experienced Samsung users could you please snswer two questions for
me tho. 1)Is it usual to have no smileys on the phone and 2) is it usual
for it to reverse your simcard contacts so the last word or 'surname'
appears first? I know these are only trivial matters but they do get
under my skin! Many thanks!

Its a really good phone, nice looking and easy to navigate. Everyone
keeps saying its heavy when they feel it but I personally don't notice.
Music players good, and speakers loud, apart from in loud groups but
what can you expect being a 15 yr old with her friends. I managed to
change the settings so the music player can go on the background which
is good too. Easy to get files onto and big space for memory. The only
thing that is bad is that it has no flash but other than that everything
else is excellent and I would recommend it.

Battery lasts 4-5 days. It seems fairly robust I've dropped it several

so I'm pretty pleased with it. If you want more you have to pay for

Everyone either has an over the top review, or just slags the phone
off but I personally like this phone it is a very good looking phone
that has all of the features that im after. I read this review before
purchasing the phone but I was pleased to find that battery life was
better than the review described, my phone last 3-4 days and I regularly
use the phone for texting, there is no way the phone could get 568 hours
stand by though. There were no surprises when I got the phone but it
does everything very well. The only issues I had with the phone was
the the slider design seems to be a bit loose and tacky, there is a
gap about 1 mm between the keypad (when closed) and the back of the
display, so I can look through it. Also when texting I found there was
a little bit of delay, which sometimes caused me to make mistakes. Overall
I would recommend this phone to anyone.

Nice looking phone, easy to navigate. I have been a loyal Nokia user
until now, but I wish I had not changed as after 3 weeks the keypad
on the navigation keys cracked (and no it was not dropped) then two
weeks later after a few texts, the slide mechanism gave up the ghost
leaving a blank screen unless you hold the slide over the keypad - not
much use, so its off back to the manufacturer for repair! If it does
it again its for the bin!
