Samsung E870 Review
Phone rating:
Review: September 2006.
The Samsung E870 is a lightweight clamshell phone with a very minimalistic
appearance on the exterior. Open up the phone and you will be surprised by the
large keys that give it a distinctive retro look. However the build quality
seems a little poor and plasticky, and the navigation keys aren't that easy
to use.
The E870 has a very good range of features for a mid-range camera phone. These
include an excellent quality screen and a reasonable 1.3 megapixel camera with
a flash. The music player supports a wide range of music formats, and audio
quality is excellent. With 80 Mbytes built-in memory and support for a microSD
memory card, you can store lots of music too. The E870 supports email with a
document viewer. There's support for speaker-independent voice recognition and
an integrated speakerphone. Aircraft mode lets you use the phone offline. Battery
life is good.
The E870 is an interesting mid-range phone offering a good range of features
in an unusual and distinctive design. It's rather pricey for what you get though,
and the navigation keys aren't the best.
Features of the Samsung E870 include:
- 1.3 megapixel camera with LED flash and 4x digital zoom
- Video camera (MPEG4)
- Internal display: TFT, 262,144 colours, 176 x 220 pixels
- External display: OLED, 65,536 colours, 96 x 80 pixels
- Music Player (MP3, WMA, ACC, AAC+, eAAC+ formats)
- MP3 ringtones (64-voice)
- Speakerphone
- Speaker-independent voice recognition
- Messaging: SMS, MMS, Email (POP3 / SMTP / IMAP4)
- Document viewer (Picsel Browser)
- Java games
- Photo and Video caller ID
- Personal organiser functions
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB, TV-Out
- Memory: 80 Mbytes plus microSD memory card
- WAP 2.0, GPRS Class 10, EDGE
- Aircraft mode
- Triband
- Size: 92 x 42 x 17 mm
- Weight: 83g
- Talktime: 3 hours
- Battery standby: 290 hours

I am from Canada, but purchased this phone in Vietnam. It is a great
looking phone with its own uniqueness. Pressing buttons are easy, though
sometimes you do make mistakes if you have big fingers. The most important
of all is the software included. You can edit pictures in many different
ways and set them up as your screensaver as you like. You can import
mp3's and set them as your ringtone with no restriction. You can set
up anything as your ringtone anything from mp3, midi, and voice reecorded.
There are very little restrictions on this phone. No copyright problems
here. Editing pictures is pretty good and allows a lot of flexibility.
The phone is small and stylish. I lent the phone to a friend and he
lost it. Quite angry. When I do get a chance I will definitly purchase
this phone again. Obviously it doesn't do everything an iPhone should,
but that's a different story. This is a great phone for being used as
a phone not for web browsing and all that other stuff. The menu screen
is very attractive, the one thing I always look out for. Really recommend
this phone for a person willing to use it as a phone. An important reminder
that this phone has very little restrictions and allows you to post
most of anything as your screen saver and/or ringtone, which is the
things I find most important in a mobile phone.

I love love love this phone. I've had mine for about 2 1/2 years now
and the only problem I've got with it is that the WAP now makes it freeze.
But how many other phones could you have for such a long time (and give
them the beating mine gets!) without there being MASSIVE problems? I'm
sadly considering upgrading, but I can't find another phone I like nearly
as much. The design, weight and functionality are all brilliant, and
this phone has served me well.

you can only fix it by taking out the battery. otherwise an excellent

Soon after you begin using this phone it will bring several serious
disappointments here and there. You will have to use standard sound
for alarm and for personal organizer reminders, because mp3 is not supported,
and amr/mmf don't work even with updated firmware. Bad usability —
sometimes you have to open 2nd level menu to do a simple operation like
rename contact (and how do you like that 2nd level menu just exactly
repeats half of items from previous menu?). Another awkward example
is picture viewer — I could not figure out how to zoom pictures
full screen until I google for it, and you cannot view next/previous
pic while it's zoomed. Sound quality is poor. The perfect design is
only thing why one should bother buying this phone. People around me
keep loving it's look. But if you care about functionality, this will
be waste of money. I'm going to buy a bit more convenient phone soon.

Got this on contract 18 months ago, looked at the white one first, looked
too much like a kitchen gadget, and so got a red one, this has a black
keypad. This was my first flip fone, and overall a good piece of kit.
Has worn well with time, color only slightly rubbed off on corners.
Screens clear, and it has never let me down, never frozen up.Battery
life has been excellent, and I like the early warning of battery getting
low, better than just dying halfway through a call.Camera can only be
described as adequate. Hinge is wearing well, very little sideways play.
Flat keypad can be very frustrating, easy to make errors if you have
big fingers (like me) balance in your hand is terrible, very difficult
to text with one hand as it falls out of your grasp. So to sum up....Good
points; Love the color (only red one), battery life and functionality.
Dislike keypad, too easy to make errors, really hate the pathetic cover
over charging socket,my nails too big to open it. Do I like it....Yes
Would I get another?.....No,going back to one piece phones

I just got this phone and I have to say that I am quite dissapointed.
The look of it is nice, simple, stylish, modern, but when you open it
up it seems too long and cumbersome. It's very light but feels rather
cheap and tacky with the keys already sticking a bit. The two big let
downs for me though were to do with sound. The sound that comes out
of the phone itself is not good. The little speaker just can't handle
realtones and mp3's without going all clangy and getting distortion
which is a pet hate of mine. Also, when it comes to the alarm, you can't
choose a song from your mp3's you just have to pick one of their HORRIBLE
ringtones and you can't adjust the volume so it comes out far too loud
in the morning- not good! For the price, there is not the range of features
you would expect but if you're not fussed about sound quality and want
a fashionable and functional phone then you may like it.

I love it and I hate it all at the same time. I love it's cute looks,
the fact that it is so light and small. The software is my big issue.
I love the way Samsung design the address book so you can put multiple
numbers in one entry for an individual - much better than my old Motorola.
But the predictive text function is soooooooo frustrating! The Motorola
was brilliant in that it guessed the word and as soon as it gave you
the option for the word you wanted, one click would insert the whole
word for you - the Samsung knows what word you want but you still have
to tap in every letter. And moving from capitals to lower case or numbers
is so awkward. For this reason alone, I will not buy another Samsung,
I'm afraid.

I have recently bought this mobile. I am pleased with it sofar although
I agree that the navigation is not the best.I think the way the functions
are arranged under the (sub)menu are not always logical or intuitive
- nor is the navigation system. The combined 'ok'-button and internetbrowser-functionality
has had me wandering off a few times too. Music is good, plus the memorycard-option
and talktime is certainly over 3 hours. Note though once you get to
the second battery-stage onto the last (almost empty) the battery seems
to last significantly shorter than between the first (full) stage onto
the second. All in all not a bad deal, pleased with this purchase overall.

love it! The mp3 is good quality and the sound goes really high! The
front screen is good too as its easy to see if you have a message .
The battery life on mine is good and seems to last for quite a while.
Messaging is easy too and i can check emails quickly. Bluetooth is easy
to work on it. The camera does produce good pics although it has to
be held still whilst taking the photo (which can be a pain!). Also as
someone said earlier about scratches on it... my one does have quite
a few but u cant really notice them and i have dropped it many times!
It does have a cool design as well!!! oooh and you can listen to the
music with it shut! (you go to your music and then put them onto an

a song from albums and then close it and dance away hehehehe

I got this phone in January and I love it! Always had Samsung, but this
is the best by far...I am confused by the comments from Michel from
The Netherlands on 27th Jul 2006 who said "The phone must be flipped
open when listen music, strange..." My doesn't, when I listen to music,
most of the other menu functions are available and can be used freely
without interrupting the music and I can listen to it closed or open!!!
The speaker is excellent quality for a mobile...the photo formats are
excellent quality considering that it's only a 1.3 megapixel...love
the speakerphone and the Speaker-independent voice recognition...love
it's simple design...the fact that it still seems to be quite rare...there's
not a lot of memory, but 1-2Gb memory cards are cheap, so that's not
an issue...I love everything about it, except the Champagne colour -
I prefer the white version...I recommend it!

Wow!! Love this phone - to the techno guru it may be basic but for me
its a massive wow! Looks great from the out side - really cute - open
it up and those massive buttons are awsome for a text frenzie!! If you
want a phone for awsome mp3 player I wouldnt go for this or i would
but dont loose your i pod. Sound isnt that great but the phone is marketed
to be cute not noisey i suppose. Battery life is fine and the phone
has some cheeky little features that you only notice by accident. Camera
isnt brillient but if you want to take decent photos you'd use a proper
camera (or you would be looking at a SE K800i) This is fine for a cheeky
snap of your mates for prosperity. Really cool phone - a must have in
every handbag!!! I wouldnt tie your self into an 18 month contract with
it though - it is basic and will be bettered. For now though thumbs
up all round for this little peach!

its now 3 months i m using the phone, very nice little package, bluetooth
works amazing, sound and voice quality of phone are good, and to listen
to music as someone previously wrote on this site, flip should be open
but not if you add files as an album and than play them, indeed a very
decent camera and really the white model looks bit like the ipod and
if one adds the 1gb micro sd card you can defintely store all your files
as well...ALL n all a very good phone..if you are deciding for it just
go for it..the red one's now out but i think white is still better

I got this phone blind - I'd never heard of it and to be honest the
numbers mean nothing to me. Anyway I bought a Samsung as I was happy
with my previous D500. I love it - I like the colour RED (I'm such a
girl). It keeps suprising me - the other day it told me the time when
I pressed a button by mistake! I think it's very user friendly and I
love the sleek look. It does however slow and doesn't do exactly what
you want when you press a button which is a little frustrating but on
the whole I'm happy with it.

I've had this phone for about a month now and I am very happy with it.Got
the 1gb memory card and I've dropped shed loads of stuff onto it.Quality! You
can set your tunes as ring tones and you can play tunes with the phone
closed provided you have set it up right in settings.I had the Motorola
V3 before this and the Samsung is streets ahead of it.My only niggle
is the vibrate and call alert settings and the ring volume. When set
to vibe and ring it vibrates four or five times before it rings at all.
I've got it set to max volume(no I'm not deaf)but it could do with being
louder. The phone itself is nice and compact but the buttons are big
enough for us lads rather than these small things so you won't keep
pressing the wrong buttons.I am well happy with this phone!

Feels and looks very cheap and plastic. If it is opened you get a nice
and long shaped phone. I mean when using for calling, the microphone
is for your mouth and the speaker for your ear. Wished it opened a little
more farther, I mean not a 150 degree agle but 170 degree opened shelf
when in open position, so the screen is easier to read when holding
in my hand and reading the screen or playing a game. It has problems
with reading music from a memory card, gives often the "unnown file
format" error. Doesn't accept big memory cards like 1Gb, gives the "no
memorycard" error if inserted. Screen is sharp and bright like on the
E530. Receiving calls is very clear, it has en very good speaker at
the place where you put your ear when calling. Better then Samsung E900,
Nokia 6233 and Samsung E780, I had all these phones in the last weeks
for 3 days to try them. The phone opens easy if someone calls and you
want to pick up the phone quickly. The keypad is great, great respons
when pressing the buttons. The navigation key is to small, you press
the ''i button'' in the middle of this key to often by accident, and
then the phone goes looking for an internet connection, and then you
are stuck for a moment, pressing the cancel button 5 times or so. Video
and photo quality are average, just for a toy and a extra option. Menu
is nice, Samsung style. Nice phone but too expensive for what you get.

been to close to the down key which is annoying. But overall it is EXELLENT!!!!

Nice looking phone from the outside, very minimalist and sleek. Open
the phone up and it resembles a kiddies toy, it looks cheap and feels
cheap. The navigation buttons are too close together, was dissappointed
with the camera in both photo and video mode too, my current nokia with
a lower spec cam is much better. All in all if u want a fone for its
minimalist looks its ok. I sent mine back.... doesnt rate well for me!

had the samsung E870 for a couple of weeks now (red). love the phone.
if you've had a samsung before its same layout. love the sleek design
and colour. prefer red to white. only BIG downside for me is that i
tend to accumulate lots of messages and then erase one by one necessitating
using the cancel button. here is where the problem arises. the directional
down button is far too close to the cancel button and can be very frustrating.
ps. if you're fussy like me about your incoming ringtones, you will
have to download something else as the ones that come as standard are
shocking!

Had this phone a week now. Feels as robust as my previous Samsung phones
& battery life seems fine. Most useful features as far as I'm concerned
are Bluetooth and voice dialling - the latter is working very well for
me. Camera/video work well, 'tho I confess I don't tend to use these
features very much on any phone. Voice recorder is a great feature that
I haven't had on a previous phone, in fact I used to carry around a
little digital dictophone, now made obsolete by this phone - I now have
voice recorder on a shortcut for making quick notes. Great to find a
phone designed by someone with a bit of taste, rather than having to
buy a garish gadget-pile! Very nice and minimalistic, compact and light;
it looks and feels like a quality piece of kit, and has the features
and functionality to match. A pleasure to look at, carry, use, and show
off!

Bought is yesterday. I am a man but I think the looks of the white model
is great, looks a little like an Ipod. I had the Sony K750i and the
Samsung E530 Ladyphone both and sold them yesterday both and bought
this one. The menu looks a lot like the E530, almost the same with only
3 or 4 more options, this was a little dissapointing, I expected much
more new futures and a much larger menu. The nummeric keyboard is very
good. Feels and presses good and exactly. The updown-leftright key is
made around (!?) the Ok button, so if you want to go upward or downward
in the menus, you sometimes click the Ok button, to little space for
your thumb and to close to eachother. Taking a close look at the pictures
of the keyboard of the samsung e870 makes is clear right away. It opens
and closes easy. It feels very light. But a litte plastic feeling. A
1Gb MicroSD card comes in next month. The only ways to put files on
it is to get an memorycard adaptor or an bluetooth usb stick. I think
the last one is to slow to put 500 mb files on it quick, so I will buy
an adaptor I think. I hope the battery lasts for one week or 6 days,
like my e530 did, if not so I will write it here next week. I am very
happy with it, it looks very beautifull, everything, side buttons, shape,
all is nice designed with silver coloured front and back. The 1,3 mpixel
photo's are good enough for medium quality pictures. For making better
pictures I use my digital camera. It is only that I always have a camera
with me now and can take those special moments pictures. Sound of headset
is cheap but there are good stereo headphones with bluetoot on the market,
I will get that in the future. The phone must be flipped open when listen
music, strange...
