Samsung E720 review

 Review: April 2005

In a nutshell: Megapixel camera phone with video recorder and MP3 player.

The Samsung E720 is very similar to the top-rated Samsung D500, but in a conventional clamshell form instead of a slide-up design.

The E720 is one of the highest spec phones around, excluding some smartphones and 3G phones. At a glance its range of features includes a megapixel camera, a video camera, MP3/AAC player, MP3 ringtones and Bluetooth™ wireless connectivity. There are some features that are better than the D500 and others that are not quite as good, but broadly speaking they are very similar and the main factor that differentiates the two is whether you prefer the conventional clamshell design of the E720 or are attracted by the slide-up design of the D500.

The E720 is a very small and lightweight phone. At just 80g it weighs 19g less than the D500 and shaves a few millimetres off the dimensions too. It also features an internal aerial, so is very small and robust for putting into a jeans pocket. The external display is an energy-saving OLED LCD with 65k colours, and displays a clock together with network information.

Open up the clam and you can see the brilliant internal 262k colour TFT display - the same as the D500. It's one of the best displays on any phone today. The keypad is a conventional Samsung design and is easy to use unless you have very large fingers.

The camera has a megapixel resolution but is a slightly lower resolution that the camera on the D500. Still, this will hardly be noticeable and in fact the video recorder has a higher resolution than the D500 at 352 x 288 pixels. The phone comes with an MP3 player that also supports AAC and AAC+ formats for increased capacity. The E720 has an external music key so you can play tracks without having to open the phone. The MP3 player then displays on the outer screen.

In addition to 64-voice polyphonic ringtones, the E720 also supports MP3 ringtones. Ringtones, Java games, video and images can be downloaded to the phone from MMS or via a connected computer. With a choice of USB or Bluetooth wireless connectivity, the E720 is easy to connect.

There's plenty of memory for storing music, videos and other data, with nearly 90 Mbytes available. A memory card option would have been the icing on the cake, but you can't have everything!

The E720 is a superb phone in all respects except one - and it's a big one - voice quality is not up to standard in many of these phones. Initially it seemed that this may have been due to a faulty batch or an issue with one network, but it is now becoming clear that this is a widespread issue and one that affects all networks. Some users don't seem to have any problems but many do, so you should be warned that you are taking a big risk in buying this phone. Read the user reviews below to get a feel for how serious this problem is.

This is a great phone. Yeah, I know it came out in 2005, but I only use a phone for making calls and texting and it does both really well. The predictive text is a little poor, and anything that isn't a standard word needs entering manually, but I love flip phones and this is light and small enough to easily slip into my pocket. Alarm is very good and has a torch function which is very useful. The camera quality is good enough that the pictures don't look grainy and the sound is great. However, no loud speaker function. If you need a spare phone then this is good enough and cheap enough to suit your needs.

I know the e720 is "old" now, but is definetly a very reliable and efficiant phone if thats what you're looking for!

I have this phone and I wish I didn't! It's sound (as many people seem to have comented on) isn't actually my problem! Infact nothing to do with this phone seems right, it's camera is a camera - nothing stunning, it's mp3 player may seem impresive but it has awful memory - it'll only take about 10 songs and it dosen't go very loud either! It's buttons are okish! Other than that it seem alright! If possible, I would give the rating of 0 stars - I think that explains it all!!!

It is very strong and durable, light weight, decent camera and video, good sounds etc. I think this is an excellent phone and i will miss it when i get my new phone! This phone is really handy and useful for an average phone user. It's easy to use and has some good features. If your like me, and you want to have the latest features and use the phone to it's proper use well don't get your hopes up! The games are pretty average, the camera is good and you actually hold fair amount of songs but overall it's not all that great.. i mean the WAP doesn't even work. Evertime someone called me i could never hear it even though the sound volume was on it's max. I've dropped the phone like 100 times and it still works perfectly. Overall it's a decent phone and does the job.

I loathe this phone. Forget all the fancy features, the primary purpose of a telephone is to let you communicate with other people and here it falls down abysmally, both in terms of voice calls and texts. As so many have pointed out, the sound quality is awful - it is more like speaking into a walkie-talkie than a phone, people's voices have that messy, static quality. I am often told also that my texts arrive in several bits and sometimes parts of them don't arrive at all. Please don't buy this phone, you will regret it.

Awful choice of wake-up alarms, most would make you jump rather that wake you gently. Compact size fits neatly into jeans pockets, however the MP3 player lacks volume so if you set a downloaded tune as your ringtone, you're unlikely hear your phone in you pocket except in a quiet room.

Ok phone, looks okay, could be better. The camera is average and although the flash helps taking pictures in poor light its doesnt make that much of a difference, the camera effects and frames are also slightly dated. When I first got the phone i thought the screen was an excellent size but compared to most phones now its relativly small. The buttons are easy to use, well spaced and big. Lots of memory on phone which is good. All in all its fairly average but i've decided to upgrade mine for the LG Shine, much sexier....

This is a good phone and easy to use. Nice outer screen. V. good, sturdy flip-open design. Battery life decent - Charges quickly. Txting easy. Camera not too bad, with a good light on it! It has taken endless knocks and drops, and has been very reliable over the past three years. Only problem is that the E720 has the tendency to take pictures of the inside of my pocket. Also the sound of the conversation is a tad low for the hard of hearing, (but it didn't really bother me, I could still hear the other caller clearly.) So if you don't mind deleting all the dud photos it's a decent phone. But I am a bit bored with it now!

However there are 3 major faults: -There is no slot for a memory card. -The voice recording playback well, to be honest a mouse can't even hear it. - Try and play on any of the games and the phone freezes! Over the past 12 weeks it have sent this phone away 3 times (for 4 of these weeks it was not in use while i was overseas) and each time had to wait 2 weeks for it to be returned. This equates to 6 out of 12 weeks for repairs. Other things include no speakerphone and T9 not remembering words added to dictionary. MP3 player isn't the loudest but still does the job. Also had to have sound checked as call receivers complained of not being able to hear me. Am in the process of now trying to upgrade from this phone as its performance doesn't match the price tag.

Jesus Christ. I am getting sick of reading reviews about this phone where people complain about the T9 being rubbish and the speech and sound quality being rubbish. ONE - People who moan about the T9 not remembering one word, why not stop being lazy, and put the word in manually you lazy people. TWO - I have seen people put this in a review 'the speech quality is poor, you cant hear people so you end up repeating yourself', if you cant hear them, they would repeat themselves, not you. And THREE - The sound quality is 'rubbish'......COME ON!!! It is a mobile phone, you cant expect it to have the same bass quality as a bose cannon, and if it is that bad, why dont you try ripping your music to your pc to a higher quality, like 320Kbps, not rubbish 128Kbps. That way you will be putting on a better quality recording, so it will be much clearer when played back through the speaker. This phone is packed with excellent features and has a top build quality, god only knows how much of a beating mine has taken, but it still works! Oh, and another thing that bugs me that i often see...'the camera is rubbish quality, my digital camera is well better' - well duh... . If you buy a phone to do proper photography, not just to catch funny moments and so on like you are supposed to, you deserve to have the phone stolen by someone who is gonna use it for what it was designed for. And one more thing, if you listen to people when they say go for motorola, they are loads better, Motorola are pathetic, they have only just started puttin a more reasonable amount of memory in their phones, but it is no use, because they break before you get a chance to store anything on the phone anyway. OK?

The only reason i give this phone 1 star is because its not possible to give none, this phone is a disaster,a heap of scrap, useless,do not buy this phone what ever you do.It looks pretty, seems cool,is feature packed, thing about it is,you cant use it as a phone, the voice quality and reception is so bad that this phone turned into nothing more than a device to send texts with, completely destroyed my faith in samsung, should have gone for the excellent d500,what a waste of money this was......if your still in any doubt whatsoever....i repeat DO NOT BUY THIS HEAP OF rubbish what ever you do!!

I bought this phone about a month ago, its a very good phone, i love the camera, and the flash makes it so much better to take good quality pictures. I cannot seem to get my bluetooth to work, i bought a belkin bluetooth usb adapter but it doesnt seem to work..if anyone knows how to get this to work please tell me!! When i try to send images to other peoples phones through bluetooth it doesnt seem to work either.. but i have no problem recieving, does anyone know how to fix this? The sound quality isnt too good when talking on the phone, but it is good enough to make calls with. Also you cannot put ur phone on vibrate and sound? which is quiet annoying. There is alot of space on the phone, although it gets used up quiet quick!.. GOOD PHONE OVERALL........ If anyone can help me with the bluetooth please post back....thankyou

I upgrade at the same time as my partner, she got the E720 and I honestly can't hear her unless she really speaks clearly. Everything else about the phone looks great but it is a phone!
