Samsung E720 Review
Phone rating:
Review: April 2005.
The Samsung E720 is very similar to the top-rated Samsung
D500, but in a conventional clamshell form instead of a slide-up
design.
The E720 is one of the highest spec phones around, excluding some smartphones
and 3G phones. At a glance its range of features includes a megapixel
camera, a video camera, MP3/AAC player, MP3 ringtones and Bluetooth
wireless connectivity. There are some features that are better than
the D500 and others that are not quite as good, but broadly speaking
they are very similar and the main factor that differentiates the two
is whether you prefer the conventional clamshell design of the E720
or are attracted by the slide-up design of the D500.
The E720 is a very small and lightweight phone. At just 80g it weighs
19g less than the D500 and shaves a few millimetres off the dimensions
too. It also features an internal aerial, so is very small and robust
for putting into a jeans pocket. The external display is an energy-saving
OLED LCD with 65k colours, and displays a clock together with network
information.
Open up the clam and you can see the brilliant internal 262k colour
TFT display - the same as the D500. It's one of the best displays on
any phone today. The keypad is a conventional Samsung design and is
easy to use unless you have very large fingers.
The camera has a megapixel resolution but is a slightly lower resolution
that the camera on the D500. Still, this will hardly be noticeable and
in fact the video recorder has a higher resolution than the D500 at
352 x 288 pixels. The phone comes with an MP3 player that also supports
AAC and AAC+ formats for increased capacity. The E720 has an external
music key so you can play tracks without having to open the phone. The
MP3 player then displays on the outer screen.
In addition to 64-voice polyphonic ringtones, the E720 also supports
MP3 ringtones. Ringtones, Java games, video and images can be downloaded
to the phone from MMS or via a connected computer. With a choice of
USB or Bluetooth wireless connectivity, the E720 is easy to connect.
There's plenty of memory for storing music, videos and other data,
with nearly 90 Mbytes available. A memory card option would have been
the icing on the cake, but you can't have everything!
The E720 is a superb phone in all respects except one - and it's a
big one - voice quality is not up to standard in many of these phones.
Initially it seemed that this may have been due to a faulty batch or
an issue with one network, but it is now becoming clear that this is
a widespread issue and one that affects all networks. Some users don't
seem to have any problems but many do, so you should be warned that
you are taking a big risk in buying this phone. Read the user reviews
below to get a feel for how serious this problem is.
Features of the Samsung E720 include:

The phone looks alrite and there are a quite few features, but when
making calls you cant hear what anyone is saying and have to keep repeating
yourself. The screen is average, if a bit small, and build quality is
ok, although some buttons are a bit hard to press. Sent mine back and
got a Moto V3 - amazing phone - looks incredible and great screen; you
can actually make calls on it!

Do not buy this phone if you use predictive text (as i do). Try adding
a word like "snooker" to the T9 dictionary, and the phone will NOT remember
it. I have spoken to samsung and this is a "limititation of the handset"
Avoid at all costs.

My new Samsung E720 arrived today from Vodaphone. I had read the reviews
before choosing this handset and seen some complaints about poor sound
quality - but assumed this would be perhaps just a batch of faulty handsets.
Bad move!! This is a fantastic phone apart from one thing - the speech
quality is awful. I'm had several phones including old Nokia bricks
and a cheap plastic Sagem, but nothing anything nearly as bad as this.
It may have lots of fancy features, but when it comes to the crunch
its primary function is as a PHONE and if its actually PAINFUL and GRATING
for me to hold the handset to my ear whilst talking, then unfortunately
I can only give this phone one star.

Love the look of this phone and most of the features are great, but
yet again im another person who is very disappointed at the sound quality
when making or receiving a call. Its very distorted! You have to keep
asking the person to repeat all the time. This phone has lots of things
to keep you occupied but if there is poor sound quality when making
or receiving a call then it kinda defeats the object of having a mobile
doesn't it??? I am going to send this phone back and replace it with
the D-500. hopefully that will be ok. Oh yeah, just for the record i
have an o2 online contract.

Most of the reviews so far have said this is a great little phone because
it has a good camera, good video and easy to use menu system. All this
is true but first and foremost it is a phone and on this part it fails
big time. When making a phone call people receiving it say that I sound
as if im talking through a sock!! (which im not :) ) I've verified this
by calling my answering machine and playing it back, sound is terrible.
The phone looks really good, the menu system is really nice and easy
to use, the camera and video functions are great. BUT the phone is utterly
useless at being a phone. In my opinion the people who give this phone
stars are people who only use text and never make phone calls. To people
who actually use their mobile to make calls they will quickly find this
phone to be absolutely shockingly bad.

I bought this phone a couple of days ago - a bit unsure about the sound
quality - don't know if it's a prob with the network because I'm with
T-Mob too???? Also the thing about not being able to turn the Power
On/Off sound off - that's is true for mine too - looked on the E720
manual on the Saumsung site and you should be able to do it but my T-Mob
& Samsung manual for the E720 has got the relevant bit missing and it's
missing off the phone itself as well- looks like the phone has different
features enabled/disabled with different networks??? Love the cool buttons

Impossible lousy sound quality (voice)! I wanted to get it fixed in
the shop, but after testing another e720 it seems this is supposed to
be the quality you get anno 2005 from a top-model gsm... Other bad points:
almost no possibilities to tweak things (you can't even change the homepage
of the wap browser!) It doesn't accept java-apps via bluetooth. You
need to go via WAP for that. It doesn't even want to install halve of
the (simple) demo apps of Sun. I am VERY DISAPPOINTED. Do not buy this

Got my phone today and as of yet have had no problems with it! After
upgrading from an E700 I knew pretty much what to expect. The camera
seems to work fine and the videos are amazing quality. The mp3 player
sound also sounds really good. At the end of the day they are only back
ups, as I would only use them when I don't have my digital camera or
mp3 player on me. Regarding some of the other comments on this site
- the time stays on my front display permanently. The menu is pretty
easy to use, as a lot of the features are similar to that of the E700.
Texting is easy and it is easy to find the person who you want to send
the msg too. Also holding down one button to turn predictive text on
is hardly a big deal. If you are replying to a msg, it automatically
uses predictive text anyway. As 4 the voice clarity, I've tried mine
out and yeah it is louder than the E700, but it is still easy to hear
what people are saying and no one has complained about not hearing my
voice. All in a ll I would say this is a great phone and with it been
lighter and smaller than the D500 it is certainly a better choice. I
have it an O2 online contract and it didn't cost me anything so i certainly
don't feel like I have lost out by getting it. Forgot to mention before
that you can turn off the power on/off sound because it was the first
thing I did. It's so annoyin that people make complaint without checking
if they are actually true first!

I got the Samsung E720 on upgrade with T-Mobile a couple of days ago
and am sending it back because I am really unhappy with it. Luckily
I had read the reviews on this site and was aware that there might be
a problem with the sound, so I made sure that I ordered it from T-Mobile
phone sales, as that was the only way I'd be able to return it if there
was a problem. Thank goodness I did that, because the sound quality
is really poor - people who I was speaking on the phone were saying
that I sounded muffled and that my voice was distorting, as if the mic
was really close to my mouth (even when I was holding it further away).
The phone is neat in appearance, but certain other things are irritating
e.g. you can't switch off the Power On/Off sound which is relatively
loud. However, the main thing is obviously the sound quality - during
one conversation it got so bad that we had to revert to texting instead!
By all means check it out for yourself but if possible please make sure
you can take it back because you may find that you're saddled with a
phone that can't do the main thing it's meant to do!! I am now going
to go for the D500 instead which my sister has - there doesn't seem
to be a problem with the sound quality at all, you can switch off the
Power On/Off sound, and it comes with a little plug-in speaker (which
the E720 doesn't).... :)

problems. I have made various phone calls and have had no problem whatsoever,
my phone i received as an upgrade from my contract with Vodafone. It
has many fantastic features and it's the little things in the phone
that really count here. E.G went to set the alarm last night and the
alarm tone i used was absolutely perfect for awaking (reluctantly!)

Problems with voice quality my a**! The built in voice clarity feature
makes the calls sound a bit too bassy but that's all. It's not a fault
of the phone in any way. The problem is that with the E720 you cant
switch off the voice-clarity like in the D500. In fact, the problem
is that the sound level is TOO loud when you're in a call and you have
to lower the speaker volume with the volume keys on the side to get
rid of the vibration in the earpiece. So other than playing around with
the settings for a bit(which is what you're supposed to do for any new
phone that you get) this phone is PERFECT!

I've had this phone almost a week, and I've had given it 5 stars had
it not been for a couple of bad points, one of which is pretty major
for a phone. But first... Connecting my phone to my PC is a breeze using
Bluetooth (I got a Belkin Bluetooth USB adapter, easy to set up). Moving
files from PC to phone and vice versa is quick and easy. The menu system
is easy to navigate and the shortcut menus work well. Texting is quick
and simple. It looks great. The camera is good quality, and I'm really
enjoying the fact I can record video clips with no restrictions other
than the size of the memory; there's no time limit. The downsides are
the video isn't too hot in anything other than bright or natural light;
soon as it starts getting a bit dark or if you're in a dimly lit bar
for example, even adjusting the brightness to full doesn't bring out
the picture. The flash is good for close ups but isn't that bright.
There's no way to make the phone vibrate and sound at the same time
when receiving texts which is crazy; it's either vibrate OR tone. The
default sounds that come with the phone are ok, but again only one of
them vibrates and makes a noise at the same time and it's not a nice
sounding tone either. Call me old skool, but I want my phone to just
ring as well; a standard phone ringing tone isn't included. The bad
point that really brings the phone down is the quality of sound during
phone calls. I'm on Vodaphone, although I don't see why that should
make a difference. The sound is really muffled. Talking to someone in
a call centre in particular is a nightmare: I have to ask the person
to repeat themselves constantly because it's so muffled that some words
are impossible to understand sometimes. How Samsung got the sound quality
during calls so bad is a mystery, because build quality and standard
of everything else with the phone is really high.

4 minutes of video, 2 mp3 tracks (that were already in the phone) about
5 pics and this used around half of the memory!!! And why does it only
store only 15 text messages before you have to manualy move them to
a folder, annoying! Voice quality not properly tested yet, but is not
the best. And those of you that said it doesnt go straight to predictive
when texting is wrong!! All in all nice phone, but may send back due
to lack of memory.

Absolutly awful. The worst phone i have ever had in my entire life.
Stick with the E700 or D500. Better still, go for the sharp GX25 - such
a great phone. The sound quality on the E720 was absolutly dreadful.
you can't hear a word of wat the other person is saying its so bad,
it just sounds like a load of mufulling. Anyone who has thought, 'wow,
the E700 is gud, this must be better' is completly wrong. even the screen
on the front isn't as good as it first seems. the buttons are really
stiff to press, and you have to press them about 10 times anyway. One
of the worst phones ever invented. If you ignore this, your being stupid.
Trust me. This is my 15th phone, and even my very first vodaphone one
with a huge aerial was better than this. WATEVER YOU DO, DON'T BUY IT!
YOUR MAKING A HUGE MISTAKE, AND YOU'LL BE REALLY DISSAPOINTED WITH IT,
ESPECIALLY IF YOUR ON CONTRACT AND YOU CAN'T CHANGE IT FOR AGES.

Sounds like you're talking through a pillow and after shouting and repeating

My mum bought the same phone just after and she has the exact same problem
so this is not a one off. Screen quality is much better than my boyfriends
D500, however whenever you go abroad you have to guess what wave you're
on and manually change your GSM band, whereas his has a simple triband
option and it does it automatically. Also, as previously mentioned,
you can't upload to sim - something I always took for granted with my
old Nokias. Both mine and my mums phones are going back. All I'll say
is don't even bother!

I have the samsung E720. No problems with talking/listening. Great features,
great phone. Other people have reported that the phone is loud when
you are talking to people, ok it is fairly loud but its not as bad as
some people have written. After reading all the reviews here I was quite
worried about buying this mobile but it is actually very good. No problems
with predictive text, it stays on for me, and turns off very easy also.
In fact the bad points IN MY OPINION are: 1, The sound quality when
listening to music on the headphones provided is not too great. Dont
get me wrong - its perfectly listenable but there is not much bass and
using the graphic equalizer does not remedy this. 2, The provided ring
tones are all boring and there is no ring-ring type. Well thats it from
me but if you have any questions please post them on this page and I
will try to answer them for you. Cheers.

first of all i fell the phone deserves a better rating that good as
given above, the reason i have only given it an excellent rating, is
but i must stress a very high excellent rating a 4.99 to be more precise.
is simply because of the lack of expandable memory, i find this quite
annoying with all videos combined on my fone it would probably come
up to 10mins, this is because memory is taking up by photos,mp3 and
other applications on the phone. with expandable memory this phone would
be amazing. dont get me wrong this is still a great fone and i would
highly recommend it. it has a great screen and the external screen is
top of the range ideal forn taking self portriat photos and lots of
fun. the mp3 is good but to have sufficient song you will need to sacrifice
videos and photos.

if you delete every other video, photo and mp3 from the fone. would
need expandable memory capasities. that is the negative thing i would

phone. I wasn't disappointed when I started to play with in, good memory,
excellent camera and video...it has bluetooth...texting was a bit of
a pain as it doesn't remember T9 (predictive text) you have to keep
turning it on. AND THEN....I made a call...I wish I hadn't as my dream
phone turned into a nightmare the quality was shocking and muffled as
everybody else has found...only wish I found this site before! Well
I'm senting it back tomorrow after 5 days, i've tried to live with the
problem but it really is unbearable. Getting the D500 even though i'm
not a big fan of the slide up design it has the same functions and an
even better camera. Forgot to mention I emailed samsung about the problem

drawbacks i have noticed are that samsung have over complicated texting
from previous models - on the e700 it was a simple process to create
the text and then find the contact whom you wish to send to and then
to send it - on the e720 however, it is a long annoying process just

Had this phone about a week now. Previously i've been a nokia fan and
was worried about changing to another manufacturer. My fears were unfounded,
this phone is much easier to use than the Nokia 3650 it replaced, and
going way back, on a par with the Nokia 6210 (my favourite EVER phone).
I'm on Orange, and i must say that I've not experienced any issues with
sound quality, quite the opposite in fact. Sound is clear, just very
loud, even holding it 2 inches from my ear i can hear clearly. also
i've had no reports of people unable to hear me either. Everything works
well, Bluetooth in particular (much easier than Nokia's implementation).
My only real gripe is that the digital zoom is a bit pants and doesn't
really make things much bigger, but hey it's a phone not a fully fledged
camera and if i want super zooming then i should really buy a digital
camera! Also the battery in no way lasts the claimed 9 days. a high
capacity battery is on the cards me thinks, But overall i'm really impressed,
very easy to use, nice big buttons( it seems that manufacturers these
days think we have matchsticks for fingers judging by the ever decreasing
dimensions), all the extras work and an mp3 player to boot.

Had this phone for a few weeks and have to say its the best i have seen
out there and i am more than happy with it. Having just thrown my NEC
e616 piece of junk away i was looking for somthing that was going to
be the complete opposite to that and iv found it in this phone. At first
i had my heart set on the D500 but then found out about the E720 and
decided on that. One of the main reasons was simply because of it being
in a clamshell format, had a sliding phone before in the Nokia 7650
and little things like when taking it out of yor pocket and you answer
it by mistake bugged me, also the screen got totally trashed and was
covered in scratches. Anyway about this phone. The screen quality is
fantastic. The camera quality is great, so no probs there. The video
quality is even better and have yet to see anything that matches it.
The phone is so easy to use, no tricky navigation, id say as simple
as Nokia anyday. No probs with call quality it has been great. By the
way i had it on O2 contract and reception is outstanding. The MP3 player
is cool and having the controls on the front makes this so much easier
to use. The phone is small and compact feels very well made and looks
great, havnt really had any issues with it so far. Battery lasts ages.
Another simple but great thing is the auto turn on feature to use the
alarm, no need to leave ur phone on over night. Bluetooth is a must
on all mobile these days and the conectivity so far has been great.
Not failed to pair with anything yet. I didnt have to think twice about
getting this phone and i suggest that you people go and get it. Dont
be sucked in by that Motorola razor junk i know a few people who have
got it and compaired to the E720 its so far behind. Anyone who wants

I currently have two contracts with O2 and have got a Nokia 7260 and
the Samsung E720. I have had Nokia's for 7 years and although have found
this Samusung very easy to use, there are still some features missing
from a NoKia and also a couple of things that have bugged me. When someone
calls and you miss the call, the outer display shows you have a missed
call for maximum of 5 seconds and then disappears. If you don't look
at your phone within the 5 seconds you will not know you have a missed
call until you open up the main phone as the outer display does not
give you a symbol of a missed call. It manages to show you the signal,
time, notification of text messages, battery and vibrate but not missed
call. I find this extremely frustrating as sometimes do not look at
my phone for hours and only when open the phone I realise. Also, after
speaking to other Samsung E720 users, it seems people have different
settings for texting. Everytime I text someone, I have to turn the "predicitive"
text on and everytime the phone goes off, it reverts back to the old
"ABC" mode. Other people I have spoken to seem to have the opposite
with them having to turn the predicitive text off everytime because
they use the "ABC" method. Can anyone explain why handsets are setup

this fone is sheer class jus got the beast an fell in love instantly
well sexier than the e770 which is in a class ov its own anyway!!!!
the style certainly makes up for the loss of 0.3 pixels in comparison
to the d5oo....and of course...the main screen will not get scratched
unlike the d5oo!!!!!! excellent idea having 65k colour external screen
amazing!!!!!!! well done samsung kids!!!
