Samsung E700 review

 Review: November 2003

Rating: 2 stars

In a nutshell: Similar spec to the V200 camera phone, but with a new design featuring an internal aerial and Java games.

Best buy: Samsung Galaxy C7 C7000 Dual ... from TechintheBasket (£325.36)

Review

For the E700, Samsung took the best features of the hugely-popular V200 camera phone and gave them added pzazz with a new sleek look and internal antenna. The E700 is slightly smaller than its predecessor, and weighs in at 8g lighter. Feature-wise, not much was added. The main additions are Java games, improved SMS and longer battery life.

To summarise the E700: sexy looks, decent camera, good display, high quality (and loud) polyphonic ringtones, excellent reception, downloadable Java games. The main thing missing is connectivity, which is restricted to the infra-red modem. It's also only a dual-band phone, whereas many in this class are triband or even quad band.

I have very poor eyesight so I was looking for a phone with very clear large text so I could read text messages and phone numbers easily. I have really loved this phone which I have had second hand since Oct 2005. I too have had the screen going white problem and the preview unavailable message for the camera. Took it to my phone shop and it appears that the chassis is cracked. Hope to get a new one fitted next week. Decided to have a look at the newer versions and am very disappointed as the menu's and text are not as clear and easy to see.

Although it doesn't have all the new features that you can get in the updates i didn't mind. The picture quality was great and it is a nice neat phone that fitted nicely in my bags. I did have one major problem with this phone. After a while my screen what blank (white) and i didn't know why but I heard that this also happened to one of my friends. I got it fixed and over 2years later it is still working as for as I know.

However, like a number of people, the screen image has suddenly gone pale and I can't use the camera. I was due for an upgrade 6 months ago but kept this phone because I liked it - more than any other phone I've had, but my hand has been forced and I've had to upgrade, I can't risk the phone dying on me.

The camera quality is great, especially with all the different effects. I bought this mobile off one previous owner and six months later, I woke up and the screen had completely turned white. The mobile was working perfectly up to that point. I rang up Samsung and they would charge me #48 if it was a loose connection, which it seems to be, or just under #100 if it was something else! They would also charge the person #17 if you decided not to have it repaired, this included P & P to send it back to you. Keep this in mind when the guarantee runs out.

OK heres the deal I was very pleased with my phone, few features that were either missing or what it did have were slightly irritating but then again that's what u can expect from a phone - its hardly going to be perfect. But then a week or two ago I dropped it, not from a height, about a metre from the ground and the clip that holds the battery on has snapped off, I would understand had it have been open at the time, but it was shut firmly. I still use the fone as I only had it about a month before hand, and I'm not exactly made of money hence why I bought this phone rather than an expensive flashy one. But surely Samsung should insure that the phone should not fall apart during everyday use, this is very annoying as the fone needs to be taped up to insure the battery is held inplace, and I'm not sure if I was to change the cover whether there would be another clip....? Please, if someone could answer this for me I would be most grateful as maybe this might be the answer, other than this design fault this is a great fone with all of it's cheery tones an' all x

Phone worked perfect until one day the camera screwed up, the colours within the screen faded and I was unable to use the camera function at all. Once the camera function was initialised I got a white screen displayed. This would eventually reset the phone and make it turn itself off and back on again. What kind of crazy rubbish was that? It doesn't help that I bought it under belief it was 2 months old, in actual fact it was a year and 2 months old. Be careful! Phone was excellent in every other way. If this problem has been rectified within the E720 I would certainly purchase one (brand new of course). I contacted Samsung - who provided me with no support what so ever.

But this phone is the best phone i have had and thats a few. I accidently put it in my pocket then put it in the washing machine for over an hour, and it still works 6 months later. Its the most robust little thing I have ever seen it takes millions of batterings and then keeps working. I love my phone. I would still be keeping it if it was not for that stupid button on the side, because it took a photo of the sun in my bag and i can no longer take photos or even look at the screen because it's so bright. The camera no longer works (preview error) and the battery life is down to about 24 hrs max. When the camera was working i found the images were of a very poor quality compared to other phones, also the auto power facility for alarms was unreliable and only worked around 50% of the time making me late for work on several occasions.

Overall is phone is relatively sound. Excellent interface. Good but not perfect camera since it lacks the flash (as to 99% of all other phones) to take accurate pictures that represents the actual image as to how the human eye sees it. However, when sent to a computer the image is large and clear. It enables you to take pictures of yourself WHILE veiwing the image. Clear polytonic ring tunes, nevertheless, a small variety. Internet based, check the weather etc. Very compacted (88 grams) hence convenient to carry around. Furthermore, there is no irratating antanae that pokes your balls. Covers are changable but for around $75 Aus dollars, mate. The bad aspect is the phone cannot vibrate and ring simultaneously. There is no key lock to prevent the camera from taking photos of your pocket. There is no reject button to avoid annoying callers/prankers (unless if u unflip the dam phone). In conclusion, there is no "perfect" phone.

U cant turn of the warning tones or the tones for the camera...The ring tones are not that great... another thing, if u have your fone on, it wont virbrate for the whole thing, only will for the 1st three ring tones and then it will play the tone. It does not have the options of discreet, outdoor, general, loud e.t.c... overal coming from a nokia and if u are really comfortable with a nokia i say dont get it. Its not good.

I would recommend this phone to anyone who wants an excellent modern up to date camera phone. I got mine a couple of weeks ago and so far it has been apsolutely great. It has the best polyphonic ringtones i have ever heard and they actually have voices on! If you go to the samsung fun club website you get 300 free points to spend on screensavers and stuff. The first thing I noticed about this phone was the camera quality. Its pure brilliant, my friend has a sony erricson T68i where you have to add a git great big camera on the bottom and the pictures look like they have been through a blender! But this phones pictures actually look better than some digital camera's! You dont need to get used to much with this phone apart from one little thing that kept catching me out. When you type a message you have to press # instead of the usual nokia's 0. The other excellent thing about the camera is the self shot screen so you can take perfect pictures of yourself and not try a nd use a mirror an take a picture of your forehead! The phone itself looks cool with the silver and black two tone look to it. There are only 2 bad things I can say about this phone. 1 is that I have recently read another review of some on who works in a phone shop and they say the battery clips some times break. Mine is fine but my sisters is started to moove around slitely. With enough care this shouldnt happen. Number 2 is that when things move on this phone they arent actually propelly moving, it just looks like a load of pictures played 1 after another but im sure its capable of doing better as when you are going to take a picture, on the screen things are moving perfectly. I dont know, it just annoys me, thats all! Overall this phone is apsolutely brilliant and im going to say thumbs up and definately buy 1! Thanks 4 reading.

I couldnt wait to get this phone and its not a disappointment. A bit pricey on pay as you go but well worth every penny! The multi shot is brilliant and theres plenty of room for your photos and text messages. The standard ringtones are great too and the little self shot screen on the front is really useful. my freind has it too and she says \'just buy it you\'ll love it\'-sinead. So we both reccomend it to everyone who wants a camera phone. Kelly x

To all out there with the Samsung V200's.... U need to Upgrade to the E700!! Samsung has improved on the V200 and has come up with the small, stylish, sleek lookin E700 that is packed with features the V200 didnt hav and shuddve had. The E700 actually remembers words stored into the dictionary so messagin is very easy and convienient. The swivel camera on the V200 has also been removed so that the flip mechanism on the E700 is more central makin it more secure and less..um..wobbly. thou samsung really needs to work on the Vibracall... it shud be able to vibrate AND ring at the same time dont u think?!...i mean, thats like a pretty basic feature on all fones isnt it? The "Inenna" is a really smart move by Samsung, Ive always hated the antenna on most sam's... esp the V200 one, which, for some reason looks extra long!.. The E700 also supports JAVA (not supported on the V200)which means u get better games. One disadvantage of E700s over V200s is that Samsung has not yet released a data transfer cable for the E700 which makes downloading and tranfering pics more of a hassle. So yea, the E700 has so many cool feaures that the negatives bout the fone can be easily overlooked! trust me on this. E700 ALL THE WAY!!

Me and my best friend went into carphone warehouse to hand in my Nokia 7250i and Sony Ericsson T610 for software upgrades, while we were waiting to be served I saw that all of the Samsung phones were out on display for demonstration. I checked out the all of them but the E700 took my breath away with its camera quality (not even my 7250i and T610 can ever match) and features. I handed both my phones for upgrade, I went to the sales desk and asked how many Samsung E700 and Sony Ericsson Z600 they had in stock... they told me that Sony Ericsson was having problems with distribution, but there is only 2 units of the E700 left in stock (not in that particular store but another one about 20 minutes walk away). Not letting my friend know my intention (told him we were going to PC World) we headed towards the other store and waited in the queue.I went over to the desk and asked what was in stock and wasn't than I immediately brought the E700 offline for £350. I was even told its one of the most sought after phones at the moment! I really wanted the Sony Ericsson Z600 at first, but now I don't really want it as all of its features are same as the T610. There are some missing features but i can live without them...overall its a great phone.

Samsung E700 is absolutely stunning and has everything you need in a mobile phone. OK it has a few dissapointments i.e no blue-tooth and it's only a dual-band. But unless you don't have a nifty little digital camera to upload images to your 'puter or live in America these features don't matter all that much. I love the fact that you can have photos of your loved ones and their always on hand for you to gaze at while on holiday or whatever but getting them onto your computer is not a big deal. Thats what digi cameras are for. This is a phone, for communicating, thats its primary concern. Aside from that, the phone has cute games, fantastic ringtones which sound amazing, and the photo quality is perfect. I have found texting to be a simple and easy task and very well laid out, including the menu's and text. For those people who think having a phone capable of having video clips is essential, then opt for the new motorola V600, which might i add, is quad-band, but theres no way i am swapping my phone for anything, i am bonded for life... Trust me you won't be sorry if you buy this phone... One other thing... to give this phone any less that 'outstanding' is just being fussy. Samsung E700 is outstanding in my eyes.

At present, probably the best looking phone around, however, Samsung have made a few errors when it comes to the phones features. Firstly, as many people have already said, there is no picture phonebook. Secondly, the ring tones are good quality but none of them are discrete (you are certainly going to get some funny looks if you are in a public place). Finally, there is no bluetooth and in my opinion these 3 features are a must on any phone these day's. On the plus side the phone looks the part, has a great quality camera (with many alternate modes), relatively easy to navigate through the menus, good sound quality and the ability to download games and ringtones. If you want to look cool but this phone but if you thrive off the actually technolgy of modern phones this one may leave you disapointed. The best way to describe this phone is to say it's like a Ferrari with a 2L engine!

Only just got the phone, however, i'm someone that bases an opinion on first impressions. The phone looks and feels great, probably the best looking phone on the market at the moment. Having searched around for a decent handset for sometime now, this phone grabbed me the moment i picked it up and visually its not let me down. The features on the phone are quite basic when comparing it to other handsets on, however, after purchasing my previous phone on the basis of what it does rather than its appearance, and then never using any of this stuff i decided to go back to buying something for how cool it looks. The e700 certainly doesn't let you down in this department, but if you are someone who uses the camera a lot, video messages and bluetooth perhaps this one isn't for you. Looks fantastic, simple enough to use but could have more in terms of features.

This phone looks fantastic and is fantastic. I got it as an upgrade for my old Motorola V60i. The screen display is clear and easy to read and the menu is quite simple once you get used to it. The camera quality is fantastic. It is so much better than what ive seen taken by the sharp phones and other camera phones on the market. The internal antenna makes the phone alot less breakable in your pocket and also adds an element of class to the way the phone looks!! I really would recommend this phone to anyone!
