Samsung E700 Review
Phone rating:
Review: November 2003.
For the E700, Samsung took the best features of the hugely-popular V200 camera
phone and gave them added pzazz with a new sleek look and internal antenna.
The E700 is slightly smaller than its predecessor, and weighs in at 8g lighter.
Feature-wise, not much was added. The main additions are Java games, improved
SMS and longer battery life.
To summarise the E700: sexy looks, decent camera, good display, high quality
(and loud) polyphonic ringtones, excellent reception, downloadable Java games.
The main thing missing is connectivity, which is restricted to the infra-red
modem. It's also only a dual-band phone, whereas many in this class are triband
or even quad band.
Features of the Samsung E700 include:
- Internal antenna
- VGA camera (640 x 480 pixels), 5x digital zoom, photo effects, multishot
- TFT LCD internal screen (65,536 colours, 128 x 160 pixels)
- External screen: 96 x 64 pixels / 256 colours
- 40-voice polyphonic ringtones (30 embedded, 30 downloadable)
- Multimedia Messaging Service, EMS
- SMS (with learning T9, max. 200 storage)
- Wallpaper & screensaver
- WAP 2.0, GPRS Class 10
- 9MB storage
- Games: 3 standard games, 2 Java games
- Infrared modem
- Phonebook (max. 1000 entries)
- Scheduler, Calendar, To do list, Clock, Worldtime, Alarm (Daily/Once/weekly),
Auto switch on (when phone is off), Currency converter, Calculator, Stop Watch
- Vibration alert
- Dual Band (900/1800 Mhz)
- Size: 90 X 45 X 23 mm
- Weight: 88g
- Talk time: 3 hours (standard battery)
- Standby time: 230 hours (standard battery)

To all out there with the Samsung V200's.... U need to Upgrade to the
E700!! Samsung has improved on the V200 and has come up with the small,
stylish, sleek lookin E700 that is packed with features the V200 didnt
hav and shuddve had. The E700 actually remembers words stored into the
dictionary so messagin is very easy and convienient. The swivel camera
on the V200 has also been removed so that the flip mechanism on the
E700 is more central makin it more secure and less..um..wobbly. thou
samsung really needs to work on the Vibracall... it shud be able to
vibrate AND ring at the same time dont u think?!...i mean, thats like
a pretty basic feature on all fones isnt it? The "Inenna" is a really
smart move by Samsung, Ive always hated the antenna on most sam's...
esp the V200 one, which, for some reason looks extra long!.. The E700
also supports JAVA (not supported on the V200)which means u get better
games. One disadvantage of E700s over V200s is that Samsung has not
yet released a data transfer cable for the E700 which makes downloading
and tranfering pics more of a hassle. So yea, the E700 has so many cool
feaures that the negatives bout the fone can be easily overlooked! trust
me on this. E700 ALL THE WAY!!

Me and my best friend went into carphone warehouse to hand in my Nokia
7250i and Sony Ericsson T610 for software upgrades, while we were waiting
to be served I saw that all of the Samsung phones were out on display
for demonstration. I checked out the all of them but the E700 took my
breath away with its camera quality (not even my 7250i and T610 can
ever match) and features. I handed both my phones for upgrade, I went
to the sales desk and asked how many Samsung E700 and Sony Ericsson
Z600 they had in stock... they told me that Sony Ericsson was having
problems with distribution, but there is only 2 units of the E700 left
in stock (not in that particular store but another one about 20 minutes
walk away). Not letting my friend know my intention (told him we were
going to PC World) we headed towards the other store and waited in the
queue.I went over to the desk and asked what was in stock and wasn't
than I immediately brought the E700 offline for £350. I was even told
its one of the most sought after phones at the moment! I really wanted
the Sony Ericsson Z600 at first, but now I don't really want it as all
of its features are same as the T610. There are some missing features
but i can live without them...overall its a great phone.

Samsung E700 is absolutely stunning and has everything you need in a
mobile phone. OK it has a few dissapointments i.e no blue-tooth and
it's only a dual-band. But unless you don't have a nifty little digital
camera to upload images to your 'puter or live in America these features
don't matter all that much. I love the fact that you can have photos
of your loved ones and their always on hand for you to gaze at while
on holiday or whatever but getting them onto your computer is not a
big deal. Thats what digi cameras are for. This is a phone, for communicating,
thats its primary concern. Aside from that, the phone has cute games,
fantastic ringtones which sound amazing, and the photo quality is perfect.
I have found texting to be a simple and easy task and very well laid
out, including the menu's and text. For those people who think having
a phone capable of having video clips is essential, then opt for the
new motorola V600, which might i add, is quad-band, but theres no way
i am swapping my phone for anything, i am bonded for life... Trust me
you won't be sorry if you buy this phone... One other thing... to give
this phone any less that 'outstanding' is just being fussy. Samsung
E700 is outstanding in my eyes.

you get the hang of the menus. BUT, can anyone tell me if there is a

At present, probably the best looking phone around, however, Samsung
have made a few errors when it comes to the phones features. Firstly,
as many people have already said, there is no picture phonebook. Secondly,
the ring tones are good quality but none of them are discrete (you are
certainly going to get some funny looks if you are in a public place).
Finally, there is no bluetooth and in my opinion these 3 features are
a must on any phone these day's. On the plus side the phone looks the
part, has a great quality camera (with many alternate modes), relatively
easy to navigate through the menus, good sound quality and the ability
to download games and ringtones. If you want to look cool but this phone
but if you thrive off the actually technolgy of modern phones this one
may leave you disapointed. The best way to describe this phone is to
say it's like a Ferrari with a 2L engine!

Only just got the phone, however, i'm someone that bases an opinion
on first impressions. The phone looks and feels great, probably the
best looking phone on the market at the moment. Having searched around
for a decent handset for sometime now, this phone grabbed me the moment
i picked it up and visually its not let me down. The features on the
phone are quite basic when comparing it to other handsets on, however,
after purchasing my previous phone on the basis of what it does rather
than its appearance, and then never using any of this stuff i decided
to go back to buying something for how cool it looks. The e700 certainly
doesn't let you down in this department, but if you are someone who
uses the camera a lot, video messages and bluetooth perhaps this one
isn't for you. Looks fantastic, simple enough to use but could have
more in terms of features.

is fantastic. It is so much better than what ive seen taken by the sharp

I got this phone in Malaysia for almost a week now and was surprised
to find out that the E700A is the Asian / European model that supports
Chinese text but lacks picture phone book and camera flash that is available
on the E715 model (US market). Though all other features remain the
same, it is terrible for E700 not to have the picture phonebook as it
is almost a MUST HAVE for a camera phone. Instead, you get to assign
silly looking images as picture / caller id. Not impressed with Samsung's
planning in this matter. But apart from the above, the phone is an excellent
compact sized phone & camera that sits well in any pockets.

I have been using Samsung E700 for a week now. The sleek, slim , 85
gm handset has a lot to recommend it. Like WAP, color screen and many
godies. It sleek, slim and even glows in the dark. But the voice quality
leaves a lot to be desired. You have to hold the handset carefully if
you want the other giu to hear you and vice versa. On the whole OK,
but could do with some improvemt. After all a phone is basicaly for
talking, forget about Java and XHTML Well not bad but it is seriously
lacking in battery! also no picture phonebook! How bad is that when

The phone is good. Fantastic Picture quality from the camera. Excellent
ringtones. For those who don't realise it the phone does work fine via
infra-red and allow you to transfer images, ringtones, phonebooks, messages
etc. But not games and apps. Now to the not so good features...the phone
is not bluetooth compatible, you cannot send media via infrared, you
cannot assign ringtones you have downloaded/transferred to caller groups/individuals,
you cannot assign photographs to individuals just cheesy images that
come on the phone, the phone does not support voice activation/dialling,
you have to put up with the cheesy message sounds, and cannot assign
others, and lastly (I think), there is no easy way to backup your phonebook.
There is an option to send all via infrared (which doesn't work), and
there is an option in EasyStudio, which again doesn't work. Aside from
all my whinging, the phone works fine...I can make calls and send SMS's!

Great looking phone with very nice camera BUT!!! and this is a very
big but. Battery only lasts about 2days, can't have anything but preset
ringtones for text messages, can't make the phone vibrate and ring unless
it's a "special vibrating ringtone" , no gprs data counter, and it makes
stupid noises all the time, e.g when you delete a text message, and
these can not be switched off, you have to have a greating message otherwise
it defaults to "samsung" when you turn it on, also the outside colour
screen is pretty useless as it switches of after 20 seconds so you have
to open the phone to check for text messages/misssed calls, as i've
missed a few due to not being able to make it vibrate and ring in noisy
places. But if none of this annoys you it's a great phone, but i think
i'll be terminating my contract shortly. If anyone knows how to correct
any of this please email me on thelastrollo@tiscali.co.uk

From the outside the phone looks great, but as soon as you open it and
see those flat buttons and horrible shape its not what you want to see
inside a phone. The software seems ok but sometimes crashes when playing
games and sending messages. Another bad point is sending MMS to other
networks. Each time i try (even to the same phone on different network)
i receive error messages saying message failed and incompatiable phone.
Camera is great quality but I have to say that having seen that of the
GX20 (Sharp), the quality isn't as good. External viewfinder for camera
when taking a picture of yourself isn't really good quality and is slow
in updating the screen. If you are considering buying this phone then
I would recommend that you check out the Sharp GX20 aswell and see which
one you prefer. Personally I now prefer the Sharp GX20 which has loads
ore features, is more reliable and has better quality pictures, including
a flash (which doubles up as a torch) which takes great pi ctures in
the dark and low light situations - really bright light considering
its only small. Overall the E700 is a good phone but i think the Sharo
GX20 is better.

BY THE WAY, to get the phone on your laptop, you need to buy an accesory,
it is a computer cabel which you attach to the bottom of the phone and
then to your computer. Myself I am getting this phone tomorrow, but
I have already tried it from a friend and the camera is superb, it has
a very powerful zoom. Plus, it has multishot, which is almost like a
videocamera, except you capture shorter moments. Everything a camera
needs. Plus some very neat effects like making it look like a sketch...
Impressive!!! Otherwise, the talk time is average, it is mainly built
for young people who don't travel everywhere... It is not for buisness
men, cause the talk time is too short... Otherwise it is a very good
and it is the ultimate camera phone!!!

In short, this is an excellent phone. I am speaking to the person sitting
in front of their computer who can't decide which phone to buy, pondering
over nokias and ericssons but can't make up their mind. Your troubles
end here. This phone has it all. Flip up the clamshell with integrated
camera and take up to 15 consecutive photos, with just one click. Self
portrait, poly ringtones, and a great display with two colour screens
are all on the menu. Dont hesitate. I am watching you.

not beep when you have a call! has anyone got around this as I am not

This is a superb phone, it looks and feels fantastic. I've just upgraded
from the Samsung V200 and it seems that many of the problems on that
model have been sorted out. They've got rid of the annoying ariel, the
rotating camera has been incorporated into the design, the flip mechanism
is in the middle of the phone so the lid doesn't wobble and feel loose.
Text messaging at last is no longer a nightmare, the T9 dictionary has
the option to add words and the capital at the beginning of the message
has been sorted. Another nice improvement is the ability to delete all
text message in one go rather than individually. The menu design is
far better looking. No problems with reception that I've had so far.
Only one potential issue I can think of so far will be battery life
- the V200 was terrible, I had to charge mine every day and even a 10
minute conversation could put it down to 2 bars out of 3, so we'll have
to see how this fairs. There's only 1 battery provided this tim e, so
it looks like Samsung are more optimistic. Other things that would have
been nice are Bluetooth and tri-band for the US, but hey no phone is
perfect.

For those wishing to download photos to their PC's with the E700 here
is some advice:- I believe the following software
and adapter allows use of the Infra Red of the E700 to be used for downloading
photos to your PC and also uploading of ringtones/screensavers etc to
your E700. You will need the update for E700 which can be found under
the downloads section. The MA-620 USB Infrared Adapter is available
for around £29.95 at online shops or try Ebay to get it even cheaper.
I am still waiting for my E700 to be delivered, but if this software
and adapter does what it says on the tin, then we don't need to wait
for Samsung to bring out a data cable! Let me know if it does work at

I have had this phone for about 2 weeks now and I am really pleased
with it. The ring tones are nice and loud. The camera is very good quality
and works very well in low light. I have managed to store about 220
pictures so I am well happy with the memory on it. The phone itself
is very stylish and looks well. I love the coloured outside screen.
On the negative side - I cant get the phonebook to select just the SIM
or the phone memory so I end up with double entries if I keep contacts
on both the SIM and the Phone memory. I have found that I can only send
Business cards over IR and not SMS which means I have to write down
a phone number in my phonebook then write an SMS with it. I thought
the phone would have had voice dialling but sadly it doesn’t although
it does have speed dials which are handy. The last small problem I have
is I can’t get the phone to ring and vibrate it either rings or
vibrates then rings it won’t do both! Overall this as an excellent
phone and I am very happy with it and would recommend it to anybody.

Used to have Nokia since I was brainwashed by the media and NOW I HATE
Nokia ever since I found out about all the technologies I've been missing
out on!! Don't be stuck in the world of Nokia and try this Samsung E
700! You will be blown away with all the crazy features that I never
got to experience on my Nokia 7250i! Now my 7250i feels like total waste
of money! Can't believe I've been taking photos with 4096 color display
and listening to horrible polyphonic ringtones that are like 4 poly!
Compared to 40 poly of E 700! That's like 10 times more sound quality!Just
too much features to tell here. Visit the official website and take
a close look :) I'll just mention some of the features.. 500 photo storage
60 40-polyphonic ringtone storage 9mb of other things storage (JAVA
games applications etc) Night mode, Zoom mode, Self portrait mode where
you use the exterior color screen to view yourself before shooting (Unlike
the cheap reflecting mirror that doesn't even help on Sharp and Panasonic)
creative mode (Add frames like sticker photos! Turn your photo into
a pencil sketch horror photos etc etc) These are some of the features
you get with the phone cheaper than Nokia 7250i! It's just an upgrade
version of other camera phones out there that costs cheaper! The photo
quality is amazing and the best polyphonic sound quality ever!

This is my second review of the e700, after a month of ownership. Things
I (still) like: + Size - Very small, yet still a good sized keypad.
+ Style - Still nothing better looking in the UK. + Signal strength
(someone reported poor signal - I say get it checked out, because mine
is as good as my Nokia 6310i) + Picture quality - 640x480 is best available.
Unfortunately, though, the MMS system does not allow messages over 30k
to be sent, so the better images can't be e-mailed to your computer
or shared with other e700 users. + Ringer volume - very loud + One-press
menu shortcut keys for ringtone access, SMS write, calendar and picture
mode. + Number plus "#" recall of phonebook numbers (eg. 2# = "Mum"
or whatever). + One press mute for meetings, etc. (press and hold '#')
+ Strong vibrate function, for silent use + WAP 2.0 - great presentation
of WAP content Things I would have liked it to have had... + Voice dialling
- useful (and safe) in the car + Bluetooth - to access its modem from
PDA / Laptop + Tri-Band - for use in the US (even so, dual band is sufficient
for all European countries, so only a small gripe). + Data cable and
software for transferring pictures and data between it and PC. + Spare
battery, perhaps... Overall, I am very happy with the unit. The only
problem I have had is that a couple of times, when sending MMS from
Vodafone to T-Mobile, I've had to turn the 'phone off and on to successfully
send the message. People continue to remark on the 'phone (and most
recognise it from the UK TV ads, now). I continue to be amused and amazed
by its capabilities. I have even played a couple of the games (Bowling
and "Go Hamster"), because they are worth playing on the decent colour
screen. I still only give it 4 stars, due to my original criticisms,
but what a tool! I should add, as a qualifying comment, that this is
my first camera-phone, so I cannot compare it to other camera-phones.

and cable do not work with my e700 (help) i have tried samsungs website
and there are no data cables or software available for this phone at
this time and this also means that the pictures you take cant be sent

I was looking for a smart, compact camera phone and found it in the
E700. With the internal antenna you have a very compact unit indeed.
Battery life is about what I would expect - I charge it once there is
a single bar showing (there are only three bars) and to get to this
point is around 2-2.5 days. Realistically, I think it would last four
days from fully-charged to flat. Looks-wise, it's unbeatable (there's
a new clamshell Nokia coming that runs it close but for now it's just
the coolest looking mobile available, in my opinion). The call quality
is very good and it hangs onto a signal better than many phones I have
owned. Features are plentiful and there is a massive 9MB of storage
for pictures, etc. Of course, the ringtones are polyphonic (and LOUD)
and by joining Samsung's 'Fun club' (free of charge), you can download
many more. The external display is smart and functional and can be used
to take a self-portrait, with a single button. The picture resolution
is, I believe, as good as any currently available. On the whole, for
looks, performance and features I give it 4 stars and a big "thumbs
up". It would have received five if it had had bluetooth and tri-band.
