Samsung D840 review

 Review: March 2007

Rating: 3 stars

In a nutshell: Ultra-slim slide phone featuring a 2 megapixel camera, video camera, music player, expandable memory & Bluetooth.

Review

The Samsung D840 is a really smart-looking slide phone with a metallic casing. The silver casing marks a new direction for Samsung, with a look that's similar to Motorola's original RAZR phone. The finish is very attractive, with subtle curves and bevelled cuts. It's hitting the shops at a time when 6 out of the top 10 best sellers are slide phones, so Samsung are definitely riding a wave with this one. And, as if that weren't enough, it's even slimmer than the Samsung D900, making the D840 the slimmest slide phone yet released (now beaten by the new Samsung U600!). The D840 is the same width as the D900, but slightly shorter. It would have been nice if Samsung could have shaved a few millimetres off the width of the phone, as both the D840 and D900 are rather wide. The keypad is flat and very similar to that used on the D830, but provides a bit more feedback than the D830's. Ergonomically the D840 isn't the easiest phone to use, but it's certainly not the worst and is perfectly usable.

Functionally the D840 is slightly less well specified than the D900. It's virtually the same as the E900 in fact. The only real differentiating factor is the look. The user interface is the same as the other Ultra-series Samsung phones and will be immediately familiar to any Samsung user. To summarise the main features, these include:

The D840 should appeal to those attracted by the D900 or E900 but looking for something a bit different. The downsides are the below-average battery life and the fragile nature of the phone. Don't get this if you're rough with your phones!

The D840 is a very stylish phone with many features, however, the main problem with it, is the LCD screen. Unfortunately, the screen can crack underneath, looking as if it has been struck from the outside. This is usually caused by pressure placed upon the screen. This can merely, and, is usually the result from simply just housing it in your pocket. The cost to repair this is around 50, as this, is not covered by the warranty. This, in my opinion, is unacceptable since this is a design fault.

The fun part is its the same problem again and again... and all those brains inside have no clue how to fix the sliding cable properly.. they fix to be fixed again.. they apparently told me they have no replacement policy and I beleived it.. Customer service in India rubbish big time.. Not gonna buy anymore samsung just because I've go to the same service centre in B'lore.

The light behind the keypad died about 1 month after having it, so in the evening/nightime, you can't see what buttons you are pressing, the battery life is very short and now the speaker has gone, so it makes no noise when the phone rings or when i receive a text and its not even on silent!! Very disappointed!

As with all things Samsung, the phone looks good but the technical detail is somewhat failing. Battery life is very poor so keep your charger handy. Im on PAYG and make about 3 calls per week. Its on 24x7 and needs recharging every 3 days. On my old Nokia it was 10 days! Texting takes a while to get used to. After 9 months, I still cant get used to the space on the # key. Profiles are another let down. On Nokia I could press a button and it goes into Silent mode, Meeting, Loud, Outdoor, Vibrate, etc, but nothing similar on Samsung. It does have a silent key, but when returning to normal mode it plays a very loud noise on the speaker. The USB data cable doesnt charge the phone. You'll need a seperate USB charging cable! The phone being metal is quite heavy compared to other plastic phones. Those are the main bad points. Otherwise quite a good phone. It still looks new after 9 months and fairly pleased overall.

Do not make the mistake and buy this phone, it's terrible.Just over a year old and the screen died (exactly the same story with the Samsung D640 I used to own, are they on a death timer? ). Not intuitive, bad graphics, stupid keypad, terrible functionality to name a few of its minuses. Battery life is TRAGIC!!! After 12 months of use and a fully charged battery lasts for less than a day!!!!! The only plus is that is flat and can easily fit you back pocket. This is a rubbish phone, avoid at all costs. In fact I would never buy a Samsung again

I have problems using my hands and need a phone with big enough buttons to avoid hitting the wrong keys but the battery life is dreadful and considering I need this phone for medical emergencies it just keeps letting me down - I need more than 5 mins to make calls and texting seems to eat up battery life. Pity they cannot make a battery to fit the phone's great specs.

The Samsung D840 is a good-looking version of the Samsung E900 (without the hidden touch sensitive buttons); inetrface wise and functionality wise, both the D840 and E900 are exactly the same. The biggest drawback on both of these phones is that it takes a long time to access the memory card; especially if you have alot of files stored on it. For example, if you are in your memory card, viewing the images you took using your 2mega pixel camera, going from one photo to another takes approximately 3.75 seconds (and thats with seven pictures in your image album). Even accessing the memory card takes about five seconds. when you take a picture and you want the D840 to store the picture on your microSD, it takes about 5 seconds. My feed back is that if you are a person that desires a phone for its good looks and simple functions such as make calls and receive calls, thi=en this is the phone for you. However if you desire a phone with a bit more stability and fucntions without cutting the "gorgeous" factor off your phone then I strongly would recommend a different brand altogether. Samsungs are renowned for manufacturing good-looking phones, but there is a massive room for improvment in the functionality area. I would rate the D840 3 out of 5 because in this day and age, there is very few people who want a phone just to make and receive calls. If Samsung built in a 2 megapixel camera in their phones must be able to with stand the demand for using such function; e.g. 2megapixel camera. Hope this review helps guys and i wish you happy xmas and a fantastic new year

The phone by itself nice but compared to other phones in the same class is not useful. As everyone says the battery dies very quickly. Actually I'm not having this problem as much as others are. Last night I made a phone call and after a couple of minutes it is broken. Once I make a call or receive a call I cannot hear the voice coming from the otherside. Afterwards, I went to techical service and they told me that Samsung doesn't produce this model anymore. The reason for that, many compliments have been made so far. I shocked and requested a different model in place of D840. Now I am looking forward to hearing from them. I hope they will give me a new phone as soon as possible. But this situation created a negative feedback about Samsung.

When replying to a text message it automatically reverts to manual text entering rather than the t9 predictive text I changed it to earlier. When sending a picture message the text comes up automatically in GERMAN!?? This phone is terrible. And now Phones4U don't want to do anything about it. They want to send my phone back to Vodafone but refuse to give me a loan phone in meantime. Basically they want me to pay for my contract whilst it's being 'fixed' but I won't be able to use it. Without that first charge, the battery life would, I suspect, be as they have found it. I have found however, that my battery can happily last 1-2 days after being charged for the 20 minutes it takes for me to shower & get dressed in the morning. Texting can be a little awkward sometimes because its slim & wide, but I've adapted to a 2-thumb style, and it's great. Love using the phone - it fits against the side of my face so that I can cup my chin in the same hand. Love the menus - easy to use. Love the looks - makes me look good! Love the features. I've had this phone for nearly a year and it is easily the best mobile phone i have owned. Not only does it look good, even get friends wanting to just play with it, the screen is excellent, sound quality through stereo headphones is excellent too. Texting is easy and quick too. Chaz complained about battery life (as did some others), i've had it about the same time and have no problems with the battery. Chaz, buy a new battery they're not expensive. Someone also complained about not being able to use bluetooth to connect to PC, I had no major problems doing that with a 7.99 bluetooth dongle. Just start connection from PC not from phone and it works fine for me. Only a couple of minor gripes, if you store music in folders on your memory card you cannot add them to the playlist, they have to be in the root folder to do that. 2nd gripe, you cannot delete any words accidently added to the predictive text dictionary. Apart from that, this phone has served me well and continues to do so.

This is a teriffic little phone and I was very pleased when I got it. It doesn't have the easiest menu to use (the Sony Ericsson V600i has that) but all other functions seem fine. The connection to a computer is unnecessarly exclusive - the phone should come with the appropriate usb cable as standard. Mine didn't. The worst thing is that I have noticed that the battery seems to discharge very quickly after it has gone from a 3 bar reading to a 2 bar reading. After that, you are in trouble. I certainly wouldn't dare to use the music player because it would empty the battery in no time! If there were a fix for this, I would give the phone 5 stars. Since it renders the phone useless in a short time, it cannot even be good.

I wouldnt recommend this phone.

I have had this phone since March 2007, a little under 6 months, and it is quite simply the worst phone I have ever had. The first problem started from the moment I put my T-Mobile SimCard in! The phone had an issue were it would very randomly turn itself off and then on again. Very annoying when Id broken down and it did this repeatedly for 4 hours!!!! Took into T-Mobile who admitted it had been removed from their range as it appeared it was incompatible with the TMobile network?! NOT EVEN AN OFFER FOR A CHANGE OF HANDSET!!!! They exchanged my simcard and this seemed to rectify this although it has still done this since but only on a couple of occasions. Next problem, by far the one that has annoyed me the most! I had the phone on charge and needed to use it, the damn thing gave me an electric shock!!! This has happened on several occasions now and am taking the phone in later today as am not at all happy!! The final nail in this stupid phones coffin is n ow the screen has developed a fault!!! Now it when you slide the phone up instead of seeing the menu options you see a white screen or a rainbow effect!!! Sometimes the screen will function as it should but now its at a stage where its acting faulty more than it works so I have finally had enough. As you are tied into a contract for 12/18 months you expect the phone to last at least as long as the contract does, or at least I do! IF ANYONE WANTED MY OPINION DO NOT BUY!!!

I have had the phone for over 6 months now and there's little to complain about. The main gripe is that the phone cannot ring and vibrate at the same time. I e-mailed Samsung about this and it appears that it is a feature of the phone. The battery has a bad habit of showing 3 stars for about a week and then suddenly dropping to 2 and then 1 star within a couple more days. Non-linear! Texting is not particularly intuitive either.

I love the phone design & features but have experienced similar battery problems to most other reviewers - making it hopeless for normal useage. Now the phone won't charge at all. Phones 4U sent it away for repair but say it's not covered under warranty (even though it's less than 6 months old) since they claim it must have been damaged - which is absolute rubbish!! You can't damage the contacts through normal use - unless the parts are not 'fit for purpose'. I must now pay - even to get it back without repair for a second opinion. Has anyone else experienced similar problems?

Keep well clear! My phone has been back to my provider 3 times and I am awaiting a replacement. The main issue is, that there is a bug with the s/w which makes the phone thinks the battery is charged when it is not. The bug is triggered when you download ring tones. The level of service I have received from my provider (Vodafone) has been atrocious; they really could not give a monkeys!

Have had this phone for a while, since april and have had absolutely no problems at all. It looks proper stylish and slinky but it could be a little thinner as it is quite wide but no problem. The camera/video is absolutely crystal clear and best ive ever had!! Music sounds good and external memory is available (quite cheaply too) to truely make the most of this phone. I completely and utterly recommend this phone it is top notch..and i dont know what the others are on about with their batteries..mine is perfectly fine and lasts a good couple of days on standby.

I thought when I fell in love with the D900 that the newer D840 would be better. However - getting the lead in and out of the side of the phone is a no no for us girls with long nails! The battery show 50% left then suddenly just closes down. The camera is not as good as the D900 but the phone is still a pretty little number with it's shiny coat!!Overall opinion - can't wait for the next Samsung!!

Do NOT buy this phone. I have owned a number of samsungs and sony ericssons over the years and this is by far the worst phone i have ever owned in my life. so much so that after 10 days of giving it a fair chance, i am changing it for a sony w850i. Don't be fooled with its sleek design, and nice mechanism like i did, because that is all the phone has going for it. Battery life is terrible. Days that i barely do anything with it, it lasts about 10 hours on a full charge, and when i listened to the music player, for about 10 minitues, the battery lasted 3 hours! after a whole nights charge! i have read elsewhere that many of the batterys need to be replaced by samsung as soon as you get the phone, which i dont think you should have to do whn buying a new phone. i have also read that these replacement batteries are not much beter, and the 200 hours standby, and 120min talktime that the phone is meant to be able to do on a charge is absolute rubbish!!! even if the battery did work as it was meant to, the phone is still nothing special, nice look and large screen, but unimpressive features, slow to use, and certainnly not easy to use all features, little you can adapt to personlise your settings. So only buy this phone if you want a below average phone that you will need to charge 1-2 times a day at least!!

DO NOT GET THIS PHONE!! I have recently upgraded to this phone and the battery life is absolutely appaling...In my 7 years of contract phone I dont think a phone has died on me as much as this one....The battery barely lasts more than a day (thats not being used) if you use it make your conversations short and sweet because thats all the time you will have. Not ideal as a phone for security either as the chances are it will be flat when you are driving home late at night. You have been warned.

Phone much admired by children and grandchildren. Battery needs seasoning as with all li-on batteries, even so just reaches Samsung's advertided standards. Did not realise that the Vodaphone PAYG package did not include as PC USB cable - additional cost. Everything seems to work well, but let down by battery performance

Avoid buying this phone. Major issues with the slider design the cable connecting the base with the display unit breaks down. Mine has already broken twice in less than two months of regular use. Camera is bad - almost un-usable. The Speaker phone is poor. Battery life sucks. External memory access is V.Slow. Does not have a good Music player (does not work with Folders, issues with Audio quality, the Headphones are good quality). The Display size and Quality is excellent, the size and style is great - Full marks to the look. Check with others before you buy this set.

Bought this phone from Vodafone about 4 months ago and the battery would not last more than 4 hours. Took it back to the store and they admitted the handset was faulty but the arrogant and extremely rude store manager (in the Whiteleys/Bayswater branch) refused to replace the handset. Eventually called customer services who argued (quite embarrassing for me) with the store manager and eventually, after one hour, they agreed to replace the handset. One week later, I received the replacement handset. The battery now lasts about 16 hours on standby (which is enough for me). However, the ringer/speaker have suddenly stopped working and so I am going to have to go through this whole charade again. On another note, my Samsung LCD monitor developed dead pixels after 3-4 months of usage. I used to swear by Samsung's products but next time I am going with Nokia. I have given 2 stars because despite I like the aesthetic qualities of the phone and the functionality when the phone is actually operational.

This is a very stylish phone and very sleek. Its easy to use, and the option of having a memory card is good cuz im a huge fan of downloading songs, pics, tones, etc so there is good storage on there with memory card. The graphics are generally good, the camera quality is fairly good tho i have seen better, but 2 megapixels is still nothin to grumble at! Texting is really easy on this phone, the keys maybe flat and all together but its no different to any other phone i have used. I find Samsung phones very easy to use but if u haven't had one before u may find it difficult to start with, just getting used to the menu lay-out and the way things work, but again, thats just the same as any other phone. all in all i am extremely pleased with this phone, and it looks good!! which is always a bonus :) I would recommend this phone to anyone who likes a phone that looks good

Ok maybe the battery is not brilliant but had worse, it lasts 3 days or so but once it goes from 3 to 2 bars you havent got long before it loses all charge but hey, that aside it is excellent.
