Review

How to start describing the Samsung D800? Let's start with the outside. It's a slide-up phone, as all the best Samsungs are these days. The slide is super-smooth, and the appearance of the phone is simply stunning. It has a black textured magnesium surface with chrome edging, and is Samsung's thinnest phone to date (note: now beaten by the D900). The D600 was 21.5 mm thick: the D800 is just 15mm. Even the Motorola RAZR is just a hair's breadth thinner at 14mm. Due to the thinness of the phone, the keypad is flat (like the Motorola RAZR) and is not as easy to use as a conventional keypad. Samsung describe the D800 as a premium slide-up phone, and in making it they have built a phone akin to the premium Nokia 8800/8910i series. It's a phone that you want to look at, to hold, to slide up and down, up and down ... but we're getting carried away - let's take a look inside.

Moving on to the camera, we're a tennsy weensy bit disappointed. It's the same camera as the D500 - 1.3 megapixels. What happened to the 2 megapixel camera used on the D600? Samsung have taken a step backwards here, but we're willing to forgive, because the display is the same as that used on the D600: a very bright TFT LCD with 262,144 colours and 240 x 320 pixels. Superb! The MP3 player is stereo and supports a very side range of formats. A stereo headset is supplied in the sales package too. Ringtones are the usual high quality 64-voice MP3 tones that we now expect from Samsung. There's an integrated speakerphone, a voice recorder and a new feature - speaker independent voice dialling - which works very well.

Like the D600, the D800 supports a TV-out connection, so you can view images and videos directly on a TV. Bluetooth and USB connectivity is supported too. The D800 also supports PicBridge for direct printing of images to compatible printers.

The D800's messaging options are SMS, MMS and email. PicselViewer enables office documents (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) to be viewed, but not edited. The TV Out feature can be used to display documents on a TV screen.

Turning to memory, the D800 disappoints once again, as there is no memory card. Whilst 80 Mbytes lets you hold quite a lot of stuff (one hour of video or around 20 MP3 tracks), a memory card would have been the icing on the cake. Still, with a phone this slim and this nice-looking, some compromise is inevitable and we can live with this. Battery life is OK but not brilliant.

The D800 is a nice phone, but not perfect. It hasn't got a memory card, the keypad isn't the easiest to use, battery life is average, and the camera certainly isn't state-of-the-art: but the looks are to die for. The new D900 is even better however!

Now, the right soft key, right arrow key AND the 'C' (erase/back) buttons dont work at all so texting is nearly IMPOSSIBLE so to sum up.... short term=great long term=terrible

I've had this phone for about 18 months now and have never had any problems. OK, it doesn't sing and dance like some but for all of the more basic features it works more than well. I'm just about to consider an upgrade, it's nice to move on to something else but I certainly don't regret buying the D800. Slim, good battery life and for a 1.3 mp camera it works fine. Like everything, you pay for what you get, if you want extra features you pay more. Reasonable, reliable phone, and I think it looks pretty good too.

this phone is possibly the worst i have ever owned, however there are some pro's. lets start with the keypad. Before it has been slid up, there are 5 big keys. the one on the right is the on/off switch, so if you sit down with it in your pocket, then even the slightest bit of pressure will turn your phone on, therefore sending a massive vibration rummaging through your pocket. Next lets move on to the text pad. this is IMPOSSIBLE to use as there is no spacing between the keys, so you fing yourself constantly writing words with jibberish in the middle. The screen quality however is OK. the graphics are not the best compared to phones like the sony erricsons; but the screen compliments the design layout quite well. samsung describe this phone as an mp3 player, but the sound is extremely tinny and echoes (literally). The memory is bad, however the camera is actually quite good. in daylight, the images are so clear, but at night, the images are very pixalated and are hard to make out what they are, mainly due to no flash, but due to samsungs incapability of making a phone with a better camera. Finally the ergonomics and asthetics come in to play. this phone at first glance does look very tacky with the mirror like plastic down the sides, however at a closer look, everything seems to just 'fit' for instance, when it is slid down, samsung has added just a very slight lump in the plastic, perfect for sliding up and down. Too hold the phone is also a pleasure, it is just wide enough, so it fills up your hand perfectly, that combined with it not being too heavy, makes it a good weight to carry, or have in your pocket. So in conclusion. this phone is certainly the most impractical to use, but it is like marmite, you either like it or you dont, in my view, i hate it, but for you, that may be different.

Dont touch it even with a barge pole. It's easily damaged and the battery isnt nearly as good as say a k800i. The only good thing is that its cheap and can hold loads of songs and it looks nice, but apart from that the speaker is bad and the charger gets real hot.

The connections behind the front Slide will get broken easily. I looked after it but it still broke fairly easy. The memory is rubbish and only holds about 30 songs with no Videos or pictures! The camera is 1.3 mgp the worst eva for what its worth RRP 160! DO NOT GET THIS PHONE, YOU WILL THANK ME LATER!

Looks nice, and slides smoothly (you'll want to slide it all the time) but I would get a better phone if you're considering buying it. It has some good features, but the back comes off easily and the ringtones can be really hard to hear. Overall I was quite pleased, it lasts a while and it's really nice in pink, though it could be slimmer and bit disappointing that it doesn't have a memory card.

The Samsung D800 was recomended to me by the store assistant at the time. I gave her the details of what I needed. Basically I just want to talk to people and send the odd text. I have found the other gadgets on the phone amuzing but of poor quality and little serious use. The sound quality for music and ring tones is poor, I rarely hear it ring even when I have it sitting out on my desk and if I am not near by. The memory has let me down a couple of times and decided to delete most of my phone book. The only features I did need text and talk where at best rubbish and worst non existant. The buttons are not user friendly and no one can hear anything I say due to the mic being on hte back of the phone and picking up all the back ground noise over my voice. I have had the phone a few months and will need to change it as the screen has now decided to play up and will scramble anything on it. On the whole i think the girl in the shop saw me coming and I will be changing it as soon as I can.

If you want a review that will actually help you decide if you should get this phone...read on. First off, I'm a bit of a techno-freak and have been for over 25 years. I've had mobile phones for longer than most people on here have been born! So, I speak from experience. Reading all the reviews below mine has proved...interesting. Let's get a few things straight about some of the unfair criticism that's been directed at this phone. If you want a device that can plays mp3's, and has lots of storage space - do what i did - buy an 80gb iPod! If you want a device that can take great photos - do what i did - buy a 5mb pixel camera. The Samsung D800 is a mobile phone...the operative word here is 'phone'. That's its primary use and what it should be judged on. How well does it manage the operation and administration of making and receiving calls? How easy is the integrated software to use? How well does the hardware of the phone perform? The answer to these questions is: Very Well, Very Easy and Very Well. The GUI of any device can take some time getting used to, but not the D800...its all common sense driven. The phone is light, yet feels compact and strong in the hand. The slider mechanism moves effortlessly and is well-balanced. There is a slightly raised area with a ridge on the bottom-centre of the slider (exactly where the Samsung logo is) and this is perfect for executing the up and down motion of the slider. Its a small thing, but when you want to move the slider up, you will sight the logo straight away. It will also prevent you having to touch the screen in anyway to move the slider, which I've seen some people do. The keypad is easy to use, and the keys are surprisingly responsive for a 'flat' style keypad. Battery life is very good. Obviously, the more you play around with the phone changing settings, using it as a toy for your music, photos, etc, then battery life will decrease substantially. But then, i use it as a phone! In summary, this is an exceptional phone...if that's what you want it to be. If you are looking for lots of bells and whistles, for it to make you a cup of tea and for you to solve World Poverty, this probably isn't the phone for you. Otherwise, go for it!

It was such a shame coz its a lovely phone. Although from the beginning people said they couldnt hear me properly. Its hard to text with at first but you soon get used to it. Anyone considering buying it...its up to you but the E900 would probably be the better choice.

This is the worst phone that we have ever had. When we first got them we noticed that the reception was poor, calls were dropped and the line was breaking up all the time. We first thought this was Vodafone's signal but when we put the sim in a cheap Nokia the reception was fine! Thats just the start because there are MANY incredibly irritating design features. The alarm setting always resets back to default after you cancel - so you have to input your wake up time every time you go to bed and it ALWAYS resets to the most disturbing of ringtones and you HAVE to change that unless you want to be in a BAD mood all day. The battery is appalling - I am forever realising that I have 1/3 of charge, sending one text and the phone then alarming low battery. And when you decide to recharge overnight the darn light stays on and illuminates your home even when the phone is off. Texting is just plain strange, if you input an unusual word into the memory and then never use it ag ain it always comes up first befor a normal word like "there" and then you have to go back and change it. And then comes the voice recognition - this is not actually a feature more of a fun few minuits laughing about how bad it is - it rarely recognises what you say and when it gets it wrong the 3rd time (which it nearly always does) it tells you to "try later" - LATER, I wanted to call my Mum NOW....! I could go on but I have made my point - DONT BUY IT.....!

this phone is very good even for one such as me how ever the only points that let it down is the memory since not allowing the memory card the pottential of the phone has lowerd so therefore 10 minutes after purchase i bought a new one the samsung d900 which is much better but the slide snapped off so i purchased a new phonne later that day from japan a trial phone the d1000 red and that phone is superb very much so that i am using it to this very moment i have to take my leave since my grandson william has just entered to talk to me i will leave my throne to him toodaloo (the queen has left the building) may i bless you yours truthfully elizabeth windsor II

Theres nothing wrong with this phone. If you want a good camera with a flash then use a camera not a phone. As long as you can text and call people what more do you need. Plus you don't need to store more than about 15mp3s anyway. If you wanted an amazing state of the art phone you should have spent more money on one. So stop moaning!

well....this phone is a great little phone....not the best on the looks side but it certainly makes up for the ugliness with the technology inside. But there are a few small things i must warn you about, one is the poor camera, and the other is that my phone has a habit of turning itself on in my pocket (it will then either call SOS-a real pain - or just leave itself turned on draining your battery A great phone...but a few small....design faults is the best way to put it.............4 stars from me !

This phone is beautiful but has been nothing but trouble. Ive had to have the battery replaced twice, had have it sent off for repair on the broken buttons, and now the screen has cracked and its ruined, more repair bills! And im not even clumsy! so if your clumsy and expect to break it, dont bother, go for a cheaper one.

I love the phone and thought it was a bargain. I had a d500 earlier this year and upgraded & got a sony ericsson 810i and sold it to go back to samsung. not bothered that camera is only 1.3 as I'll use a camera when i want to take pics! sounds fab looks great(it's pink!) I love it. recomend to anyone to buy it!!!

Alright, Samsung have gone a little way outta control.First of all,the phone is attractive and everything and is sleek.1 Point there. But then,it get's all out of hand. A 1.3 mega pixel phone?I mean, you use the camera for the sake of taking pictures but I think they could of done much better. Insultment. 1 point lost there.Secondly, the memory slot,is a big no no,because now a days, having big memory is important so why have these people made no freakin external memory? The keypad is just so irritatin to use even though I have petite fingers,it takes me an hour to type up something. And I don't recommend it for people with long nails, and it is just more annoying...No flash for the camera,I mean, how the heck are you expected to take pictures at night?Sheesh,do the phone manufacturers have no heart or brains at all?I'd rather stick with the D600,it is much better than getting ripped off by this useless one.And oh yeah, the battery life is so bad,you keep having to charge it every two days.Very bad.Samsung, you disgust me.I gave away your phone in 2 weeks because I just couldn't stand it!

I got this phone in Easter of this year, having had my Motorola RAZR for a year before that. Having now had the phone for roughly six months I would like to say that overall it has been a joy to own. The large internal memory allows at least 15 mp3 songs (if you have an mp3 player it doesn't matter anyway) and the 1.3 megapixel camera takes excellent quality photos. The stainless steel runners down the side set it apart from other slide phones as it looks more sophisticated and expensive. Problems I have had with this phone are to start with the keypad took some getting used to as it is flush with the phone itself, however this just took some getting used to! The other problem I am noticing now is that the battery life is not amazing (still better than my RAZR) and it needs charging usually every two days which acutally isn't too bad I suppose!

Have had this phone since April now but am gonna have to get rid of it. The battery life is just too bad. Everything about the phone works fine accept that after a full charge, 45 mins on the phone is all that it takes. I've taken the battery back a couple of times to be replaced but still no better. Shame really cause it's a good phone apart from that. I'm upgrading to the D900, hopefully the battery life will be better.

This phone is awful. Its one of the ugliest things i've ever seen thats why websites alway use the photo thats at an angle. The phone is really wide. Not one for the girlies! It would be more suited to a 40 something business man who happens to be going through a mid-life crisis. The phone has no light or flash for taking pictures (whats the point). I was glad when i lost it but felt sorry for the person who found it as i wouldn't wish this phone on my worst enemy. Please dont get this phone! you have been warned. X
