Samsung D800 Review
Phone rating:
Review: February 2006.
How to start describing the Samsung D800? Let's start with the outside. It's
a slide-up phone, as all the best Samsungs are these days. The slide is super-smooth,
and the appearance of the phone is simply stunning. It has a black textured
magnesium surface with chrome edging, and is Samsung's thinnest phone to date
(note: now beaten by the D900). The D600
was 21.5 mm thick: the D800 is just 15mm. Even the Motorola
RAZR is just a hair's breadth thinner at 14mm. Due to the thinness of the
phone, the keypad is flat (like the Motorola RAZR) and is not as easy to use
as a conventional keypad. Samsung describe the D800 as a premium slide-up phone,
and in making it they have built a phone akin to the premium Nokia
8800/8910i series. It's a phone that you want
to look at, to hold, to slide up and down, up and down ... but we're getting
carried away - let's take a look inside.
Moving on to the camera, we're a tennsy weensy bit disappointed. It's the same
camera as the D500 - 1.3 megapixels. What happened to the 2 megapixel camera
used on the D600? Samsung have taken a step backwards here, but we're willing
to forgive, because the display is the same as that used on the D600: a very
bright TFT LCD with 262,144 colours and 240 x 320 pixels. Superb! The MP3 player
is stereo and supports a very side range of formats. A stereo headset is supplied
in the sales package too. Ringtones are the usual high quality 64-voice MP3
tones that we now expect from Samsung. There's an integrated speakerphone, a
voice recorder and a new feature - speaker independent voice dialling - which
works very well.
Like the D600, the D800 supports a TV-out connection, so you can view images
and videos directly on a TV. Bluetooth and USB connectivity is supported too.
The D800 also supports PicBridge for direct printing of images to compatible
printers.
The D800's messaging options are SMS, MMS and email. PicselViewer enables office
documents (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) to be viewed, but not edited. The TV Out
feature can be used to display documents on a TV screen.
Turning to memory, the D800 disappoints once again, as there is no memory card.
Whilst 80 Mbytes lets you hold quite a lot of stuff (one hour of video or around
20 MP3 tracks), a memory card would have been the icing on the cake. Still,
with a phone this slim and this nice-looking, some compromise is inevitable
and we can live with this. Battery life is OK but not brilliant.
The D800 is a nice phone, but not perfect. It hasn't got a memory card, the
keypad isn't the easiest to use, battery life is average, and the camera certainly
isn't state-of-the-art: but the looks are to die for. The new D900
is even better however!
Features of the Samsung D800 include:
- 1.3 megapixel camera (1280 x 1024 pixels) with digital zoom
- Video camera
- Display: TFT LCD, 262,144 colours, 240 x 320 pixels
- MP3 player (MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+ and WMA formats)
- Stereo headset supplied
- 64-voice polyphonic ringtones / MP3 ringtones
- Speaker independent voice dialling
- Integrated speakerphone
- Voice recorder
- Messaging: SMS, MMS, E-Mail (POP3, SMTP & IMAP4)
- Document viewer (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, PDF)
- Games: Bobby Carrot, Time Rider II plus downloadable Java games
- Personal organiser functions
- Caller ID with picture phonebook
- Memory: 80 Mbytes
- Connectivity: Bluetooth®, USB, TV-out
- WAP 2.0, GPRS Class 10
- Size: 97 x 52 x 15 mm
- Weight: 98g
- Triband
- Talktime: 3.5 hours
- Battery standby: 220 hours

I like it. The silver edges make it look different from other sliders
and the ok button has a nice effect at night when the backlight is on.
The cam and video are good so is the mp3 player. It should have a card
slot but they wanted to make it for fashion and not for entertainment.
Instead of extra option like themes and mp3 sms tones samsung give you
other things like document viewer and tv output. You cannot have everything
and if you go with samsung you get higher quality.

People who say that this phone is bad or something..I ask you..where
was your thinking by ch. this phn?If you bought it with damaged battery
or if it has been softly damaged by crashing on to the concrete, it
is no to blame samsung for. This phone is far away from ugly d 600 or
d500 or any nokia garbage..batt. lasts for 5 days of normal use..if
i want to buy a christmas tree i ll do so..but choosing mob for such
purpose is so gently said...idiotic...for children is ideal..something
flashy..look royale and elegant. from mee 5 stars and remember..try
to empty the batt..at first time so much that you cannot turn on the
thing:))then charge it about 10 hours:)all rewiews and specs are not

Theres nothing wrong with this phone. If you want a good camera with
a flash then use a camera not a phone. As long as you can text and call
people what more do you need. Plus you don't need to store more than
about 15mp3s anyway. If you wanted an amazing state of the art phone
you should have spent more money on one. So stop moaning!

well....this phone is a great little phone....not the best on the looks
side but it certainly makes up for the ugliness with the technology
inside. But there are a few small things i must warn you about, one is
the poor camera, and the other is that my phone has a habit of turning
itself on in my pocket (it will then either call SOS-a real pain - or
just leave itself turned on draining your battery A great phone...but

Alright, Samsung have gone a little way outta control.First of all,the
phone is attractive and everything and is sleek.1 Point there. But then,it
get's all out of hand.Wtf?A 1.3 mega pixel phone?I mean,you use the
camera for the sake of taking pictures but I think they could of done
much better.Insultment.1 point lost there.Secondly,the memory slot,is
a big no no,because now a days, having big memory is important so why
have these people made no freakin external memory? The keypad is just
so irritatin to use even though I have petite fingers,it takes me an
hour to type up something. And I don't recommend it for people with long
nails, and it is just more annoying...No flash for the camera,I mean, how
the heck are you expected to take pictures at night?Sheesh,do the phone
manufacturers have no heart or brains at all?I'd rather stick with the
D600,it is much better than getting ripped off by this useless one.And
oh yeah, the battery life is so bad,you keep having to charge it every
two days.Very bad.Samsung, you disgust me.I gave away your phone in 2
weeks because I just couldn't stand it!

I got this phone in Easter of this year, having had my Motorola RAZR
for a year before that. Having now had the phone for roughly six months
I would like to say that overall it has been a joy to own. The large
internal memory allows at least 15 mp3 songs (if you have an mp3 player
it doesn't matter anyway) and the 1.3 megapixel camera takes excellent
quality photos. The stainless steel runners down the side set it apart
from other slide phones as it looks more sophisticated and expensive.
Problems I have had with this phone are to start with the keypad took
some getting used to as it is flush with the phone itself, however this
just took some getting used to! The other problem I am noticing now
is that the battery life is not amazing (still better than my RAZR)
and it needs charging usually every two days which acutally isn't too
bad I suppose!

This phone is the definition of disapointing. had it for 3 months now
and what can i say... At first I loved the phone thought it was really
cool(but consider i had just upgraded from an NECe616!). But the phone
is faulty and heres why 1- The sound on the ringer is poor, if your
a girl with a hand bag and you use it to store items like your phone...
you won't ever hear it even on loud. 2- i have replaced this handset
twice now because now one can hear me when i speak to them ( i have
a loud voice too) 3- the 2nd handset i could not hear anyone after 2months
even when i turn up the vol' it jus sounded muffled. 4- crappy O2 gave
me the wrong setting codes and could not use the camera for a month!
but when i used the cammra couldn't really see me ( i am black its not
good when you can only see teeth in a pic!!!)the cammera has no flash
not even a light...POOR. 5-the voice recognition is do bad that i can't
begin to describe it 6- the buttons (if you can call em that) are so
clos e together and are not easy to use if you have a- big hands or
b- long nails... i have both!!! Plus don't buy this phone from PHONES
4U (especially one in Birmingham Bullring) as they make out like your
crazy and that the phones the best thing since air! plus they always
put you on the *^#*@ insurance which cost the earth and is none refundable.
beware this phone SUCKS big time and so phones 4U keep away from both

Well i dont really know what to say to be honest. i got the phone 3
months ago and i had false nails and i could not use the key pad at
all, so i took it back within the 14 days to get a different one, i
had the d500 before the d800 and i went back and got the d600 which
was stunning, but after having to give up my phone i decided to go back
to the d800 in pink to give it another go, i now dont have false nails
and i find the key pad a lot easier now and have hardly ever hit the
wrong button, but however, i am very disapointed that it does not have
a flash with the camera! i mean what kind of phone now a days does not
even have a flash, and as for the picture quality what were they thinking,
downgrading it, i am disapointed with that. but then on the other hand,
it is a nice phone to look at, has some fantastic features on it and
is very classy, i cant say no dont go for this phone and i cant say
yes do go for it, it depends on what u want personally from a phone,
u need small hands and short nails thats for sure, but if u like phones
for there cameras then go for the d600. i definatly think its more of
a ladies phone though. i am not sure if i am going to keep it or not,
there are a lot of mixed reviews about it as you will see, but give
it a chance because as i say it depends on the features you are looking
for....

Somewhat overpriced phone for the stuff you're getting with it. Construction
of the phone is really nice, and it slides in and out very smoothly.
However, the buttons at the top are placed very weird, and i often press
the wrong button or a couple at a time, and i've never had that problem
with any other phone before and i've owned phones with a lot smaller
keypads (SEw800). also it gets dirty sorta easily, not sure what the
material is. non-expandable memory SUCKS. camera isn't that great either
at 1.3MP, and i don't liek the samsung mp3 player format. anyways i
brought it back after 2 days and paid more to get the nokia n80 and
i love that it. don't waste your money on this phone, get the d600 and
u can save a couple hundred bucks and u get a 2MP camera and expandable

This phone is nothing special at all. The only thing I find extremely
good is the 320x240 screen resolution. Everything else is a major disappointment.
I currently own a SE W810i, a Samsung E530, a Motorola V3i and this
phone. I change my phones monthly, if not more, so have a lot of experience
with the majority of phones out there! The worst feature of this phone
is the keypad. Just wrong. Texting is a nightmare and the predictive
text option is ridiculous. Samsung seem to change this with every phone
they release. The E530 is fine, I have no gripes with it. But on this
overrated piece of plastic, the predictive text thinks you'll want a
capital letter after an apostrophe! Did a dyslexic person design that?!
And actually using the keypad is very hard. The space button is the
worst, it always uses a 'w' or '9' instead, as it is such an unresponsive
keypad. Owning a Moto V3i as well, I can confidently say that Moto have
it mastered where razor-thin phones are concerned. Granted they're not
the most feature-packed phones, but they know how to do unique and stylish.
Their keypads are very easy to use, considering their design. This just
isn't right for Samsung. My E530 is a much superior phone with actually
much better features. And out of the three D-series Samsung phones I
have used, the D500 was actually my favourite. The D600 was, again,
nothing really special except the screen and 2mp camera. The D800 has
actually stepped back with the camera, with a measly 1.3mp and NO flash!
Which makes it worse than the D500! There is no external memory, and
while 80mb is fairly generous for applications and wallpapers etc.,
Samsung have marketed this phone as also being an MP3 player. Whether
it plays MP3's or not, it cannot possibly be a music player when it
only has enough room for around 20-25 songs! Not to mention, when the
MP3 player is playing, you cannot access the rest of the phone! Take
a look at the SE Walkman series Samsung, if you want to get into the
whole phone-as-a-music-player thing, or just leave alone! Another drawback
is the lack of Skins. Look back at the D500, Samsung - what happened
to the nice blue, green, pink and orange skins?! With only two boring
skins to choose from, you can't really make the most of the excellent
screen with any nice, bright colours! I can't believe Samsung market
this as a 'premium' phone. Yes, it looks very nice. But it somehow feels
tacky. The keypad is abysmal and they should stick to what they know
and do best. I'm still within the 14-day exchange period, so I will
be exchanging mine for something else - anything else! I'm very disappointed
with this phone; it could and should have been so much better. And yet
again, SE continue to amaze me with their phones and I doubt Samsung
could ever live up to their standards.

What should a phone do: Make and recieve calls, texting and looking
good. Why are people killing this phone? Yes, texting is hard for people
with big hands, the camera isn't the best in the market and no expandable
memory is also a downfall but think about it, if you want a camera,
BUY a camera, if you want a music player, BUY an mp3 player! This phone
is good looking and can make and recieve calls and the phone has enough
memory to put in some decent mp3's for ringtones and pictures for wallpapers.
Overall, its better than the D500.

for txting and dialing numbers ..when ever i txt and i want a space
'w' always comes up ...the phone looks good though and the mp3 player
is great i just thin more effort could have gone into the keypad ...also
the top keys are too close to each other im always gettin frustrated
by pressing the wrong keys because they are too close ..the d600 as
a phone is alot better ..the only thing that makes this one better is
that it is sleek and stylish! ..and what the hell is with samsungs and
having a 'vibe and ring' setting im sick of not hearing my phone because
its on vibrate and as soon as my ringtone kicks in it hangs up!

its lite and just slips into the smallest bag (i tried lol) the camera
does let the phone down but everything else makes up 4 it. i also feel
its different as the screen has the same feel as the plasma screen i
feel the look of it is gr8 as most fones lyk it have fat covers i also
feel the buttons are a bit flat but still make a good impact on the

I got the D800 when it first came out and I was tempted by it's styling
and slimness (I had a V3 for 18 months...much thicker than that and
I would feel uncomfortable carrying a phone around). Camera is fine
and a nice screen size......but my biggest gripes are the keypad and
thesound (when listening to the person you are calling. The keypad is
small...I haven't got massive hands, but I'm forever hitting the 1 instead
of the 4 (it always seems to be these two?). The little cursor keys
require pointy fingers, or use of the nail of your finger. Now the sound....when
listening to someone speak, I find the sound quality to be inferior
to the V3, the V3 was clearer even at higher levels, whilst the D800
most definitely isn't (get someone with a poor signal and bit of distortion
and you will not pick up a lot of what they are saying. Finally texting!
Too many key presses to select the person you want to send a quick text
to. My wife really likes the phone and is just about to change her phone,
so I'm thinking about getting her to get a phone for me and we will
do a straight swap!

week back, being the first time owning a Samsung I can't really comment
on how good it is or not in comparison to the D600. This is the first
real move up for me in the mobile phone market and I must say I am very
impressed with my D800. Some have said the texting is bad? I have large
fingers and have experienced very little problems with the texting mode
one criticism I have on that is the predictive texting ( total waste
of space ) Samsung take a look at the Motorola L6 predictive texting
is spot on. Love the compactness of the phone but hate the browser button
being incorporated in the main centre button I keep finding I have to
cancel it a lot. The playback on the MP3 and videos is quite low?????
but not a real problem however videoing drag seriously needs a look
at? Love the compactness of the phone and the loss of Mega Pixel people
talk about doesn’t really bother me. My major snipes on this phone
are: 1. Battery life is abysmal I have to charge the thing every day
however my Nokia 3220 has not been recharged in the past four days.
2. The My folder feature is a total waste of space. the statement my
folder would suggest it is for your personal messages / pictures however
Samsung forgot to integrate a password protection for this file so making
it publicly available should you have nosey friends and family. Granted
you can input a phone lock pin etc but once you've done that your phone
is extremely venerable. Lets hope the phone has a flash memory ability
and Samsung develop an free software upgrade to close that loophole.
3. The fact that you loose the mega pixels and the phone does not allow
for upgrading memory I can see being a major bug bare for some and to
say the Phone is an upgrade of the D600 concerns me because looking
at both phones knowing what I know now about the both phones I’d
have gone with the D600 even if it is a little more bulky. All the mini
moaning apart I think this phone is a very good phone. But the my folder
situation is a major issue to me and would have governed my choice of
how much I paid for the phone.

is just something abot it that doesn't feel right . First of all the
keypad its sort of like the motorola v3, L6,L7 but as a samsung phone
its feels wrong compared to my old d600 and 6230. Secondarily the camera
, dont get me wrong it 1.3 mega pixells so its better than a vga camera
and if you want a camera you should buy a CAMERA , but the d600 had
2.0 and it seems like a step sidewards for samsung. Also mine seems
to be losing it battery very quickly. I dont want to sound like a critic

point of what a phone is about - "making phonecalls"!! I was demonstrated
this phone in a shopping centre shop, an environment my current phone
struggled with, namely poor reception area. I was very impressed to
say the least with the call quality. The phone was as slim and light
as my Motorola V3, and was I admit feature laden compared to the V3.
I don't really care much about WAP/GPRS, sending lots of texts but even
so the clear and logical menu's impressed me. I reckon I will consider
one, especially the white version I was demonstrated. Well done Samsung

The D600 has 2mgpixels which is much better! Here's some advice for
those people interested in the D800 - trust me the D600 has a much better
screen resulotion, a memory slot (evry fone needs a memory slot so why
hasnt the D800 got one if its so great?!) the D600 looks better and
is much easier to use than the D800. Samsungs are very good phones but
what happened with the D800 - the designer must have got a headache!
Anyway its not the worst phone I've ever reviewed so it deserves 2 stars.

The first thing that strikes you about the D800 is that it is an incredibly
attractive phone, the metal strip around the edge makes it look just
that little bit smarter and really provokes the wow factor. The phone
has however received mixed repsonses since I bought it. The camera for
example, being a mere 1.3 megapixels and lacking any kind of flash is,
when compared to most modern phones, a little disappointing. Similarly
I have found that the lack of a card slot or any PC connector cable/
software has meant that I am yet to have transfered any of my photos
back to my laptop. Having said this, the D800 makes up for a few missing
features in it's great software. It is perhaps the easiest phone I've
used since the nokia 3310 some 6 years ago. Once you have mastered it's
slightly tricky keypad it really is the best phone around at the moment.
It easily fits in your jeans/ suit pocket and still ticks most of the
boxes for a demanding user.

Having owned a D500 for the last year I decided to stick with Samsung
and go for the D800 which I have owned for a week now. Aesthetically
speaking the D800 is pretty much perfect. The sliding mechanism is ultra
smooth. I prefer the look and feel of this phone to my mate's Nokia
8800 (which costs twice as much). Technically the D800 is good but could
be better. My main gripe is with the the keypad which is flat and the
keys are a little too small. I do not have fat fingers but the keypad
style does make texting a little tricky. This will probably just take
a little getting used to. The only other annoyances are the voice activated
dialling which is rubbish and the fact that you cannot choose a non-standard
text message alert (this is the same on all their phones, why don't
you fix this Samsung!!?!?!). On the plus side - the battery life seems
reasonable enough, the web browser is excellent and a nice little touch
added my Samsung is the 'Recent recipient' menu when finding a text
message addressee. Overall I am extremely satisfied with this phone.
Well done Samsung. Or to put it another way - DIS FONE IS DA BOMB INNIT,
