Samsung D500 Review
Phone rating:
Review: October 2004.
Announced by Samsung in October 2004, and now available in the UK,
the D500 combines the very best of Samsung's techology in every field:
from cutting-edge TFT screen to megapixel digital camera to wireless
connectivity. The phone is aimed both at high-end business users and
the technology-hungry personal user market.
In
many respects, the D500 can be viewed as an enhancement of the D410,
which itself has much in common with the best-selling E800.
Like these phones, the D500 has a slide-up design, which enables a large
screen to be placed within a compact phone design. Many of the phones
features are conveniently available on the front face, but a gentle
push will make the slide mechanism open and close automatically, giving
access to the full keypad below. Unlike the D410, the D500 has an internal
aerial, giving it a more modern appearance, and removing the possibility
of damage to the aerial. The phone is also lighter than the D410 at
just 99g.
The display on the D500 is quite exceptional. With a size of 1.9 inches,
a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels and 262k colours, it knocks most other
phones dead, and is even bigger than the display on the D410. The screen
uses TFT technology, making it bright and clear, suitable for use even
in direct sunlight.
The camera has a resolution of 1.3 megapixels, making it simply the
best camera phone available at the time of launch. The camera has a
flash for low-light photography and a 7x digital zoom. The camera can
also be used as a camcorder for making videos, with a 4x digital zoom.
The phone comes with an MP3 player, with bags of memory for storing
audio tracks. MP3 clips can also be used as ringtones as an alternative
to the 64-voice polyphonic MIDI ringtones that come supplied. MP3 ringtones
offer the highest possible quality audio.
The phone incorporates some of the advanced technology introduced in
the E800 to enhance voice clarity. The phone automatically senses the
volume of the background noise and will increase the volume and clarity
of the incoming call to make it more audible. In addition there is an
integrated handsfree speakerphone.
The D500 is the first Samsung phone in the UK to incorporate Bluetooth
wireless connectivity, and the phone also has a USB port for easy connection
to a computer. The Bluetooth support is a full implementation, enabling
data to be transferred as well as for connecting to a wireless headset
or car kit.
The memory available in the D500 is a whopping 80 Mbytes - more than
enough for storing videos and MP3 tracks, and enough for demanding business
users too. For example, the phone can store over 1,000 megapixel images,
60 minutes of video, or up to 20 MP3 tracks.
Is there anything missing from the D500? The phone clearly addresses
any shortcomings with the D410 by introducing an internal aerial, Bluetooth
wireless connectivity and an expanded memory. Perhaps the only thing
missing is the option to plug in an additional memory card - although
frankly 80 Mbytes is more than adequate for most users. The phone lacks
the Symbian operating system of a smartphone, which means that third-party
applications are limited, but the D500 isn't a smartphone and it's not
fair to compare it with one. In its class, we believe that the D500
is simply the best! The Samsung E720
is similar to the D500 but has a conventional clamshell format instead
of the D500's slide-up design.
As mentioned, the D500 is now obsolete, and we recommend the newer
Samsung D900i or Samsung
G600.
Features of the Samsung D500 include:
- 1.3 megapixel camera (1280 x 1024 pixels) with flash and digital
zoom
- Video recording & messaging (176 x 144 pixels)
- 262,144 colour TFT LCD display (176 x 220 pixels)
- Music player (MP3/AAC)
- Java games (3 embedded games)
- Ringtones: 64-voice polyphonic and MP3
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB, IrDa, SyncML
- Integrated handsfree speakerphone
- Messaging : SMS (with learning T9), EMS, MMS
- E-Mail client (POP3, IMAP4, SMTP) / vCard / vCalendar
- Personal organiser functions
- Phonebook (max 1000 entries)
- Memory: 80 Mbytes
- WAP 2.0, GPRS class 10
- Tri-band (900/1800/1900MHz)
- Size: 94 x 46 x 24 mm
- Weight: 99g
- Talktime: up to 6.5 hours
- Battery standby: up to 300 hours

I've only just given away my old D500, which I've had for nearly six
years and which has served as a reliable backup whenever newer phones
have gone wrong. It's obviously very dated now, but I shall miss it.
It's very user-friendly, good to make calls on as the speaker is very
clear and it's ultra-reliable. Best handset I've ever had, without exception.

Just been converted from my trusted Nokia! Pleasantly surprised with
the ease of use of the menu system ... on a par with Nokia's and much
better than other manufacturers. The screen quality also knocks the
pants off its competitors! Was initially concerned with the bluetooth
(being Samsung's 1st attempt in this area), but its found everything
I've flung at it without any problems. Basically its a very good piece
of kit, and the large majority of people will be happy with it. On the
downside ... well it doesn't hook up to outlook so doesn't do the synchronising
contacts/calendar thing etc .... but then again its not a "smart phone".
Also no voice recognition for your contacts, so bit more difficult to
make that call thru' your bluetooth headset... your fingers still have
to do some walking! If these 2 things are really important to you ...
then prob best to look elsewhere. If they don't matter / or you can
live with it ... find a good deal and go for it!

Well, after hunting all over to get this phone on the 02 newtwork I
finally managed it theough mail order. All the advertised functions
are outstanding. As a phone the sound is clear, the ringtones are LOUD
and the screen is clear. As a camera it is as good as my trusty old
Camedia 1.3 MPixels. As a camcorder, well, it's just a bit of fun really
so don't expect THX . . All the other features are great, buid quality
is solid and the buttons are easily navigated by your thumb. The only
drawbacks are probably the lack of a radio which I would have loved
(as I do not intend to use this as an MP3 player to save space for pics)
etc. and the fact that it does not remember I like to use T9 predictive
text input. It seems to keep reverting to old style of hitting the keys
three three times for the last letter in the key . . . am i doind something
wrong here ? GREAT phone, one of the leaders at min I reckon.

I originally ordered the new Nokia 6170 on O2 from One Stop Phone Shop.
I got it and within 15 mins I got bored - the Nokia has no features
whatsoever (unless you want PTT [Push To Talk]?!). I sent the Nokia
6170 back and got the Samsung D500 instead. I read the review on this
website and a few others and was instantly hooked. The real thing did
not disappoint! I got the phone on Orange and first thing, they have
made a bit of a balls of it! Orange have put their infamous "side-bar"
on the main screen - basically shortcuts to Call History, Messages (SMS,
MMS, email), Calender and WAP. The Orange sidebar takes about 1/6th
of the screen - it's not huge, but its very annyoing when you have,
like me, a favourite photo of your little boy as the wallpaper :( That
aside, another boob Orange have made is changing the Samsungs factory
set MENU GRID icons to their own - which are basically naff and boring.
The icons for the menu have no style or depth and rather spoil the phone
on first look. However, you get used to the dull icons and skip the
screen quick to get to the sub-menus which haven't been tinkered with.
The phone I got was the dark grey colour (or Platinum, as I like to
call it). It is light in weight and only just heavier than my previous
Samsung E700. The SCREEN is huge for a phone its size. The colurs are
sharp and vivid. The CAMERA is superb - 1.3 megapixel of fun! It has
a built-in flash at the back which can be set to flash just before the
picture is taken or it can be set as a constant light. Folks, don't
be fooled by the little light - it is extremely powerfull and can EASILY
light up the darkest of rooms! SMS & MMS are your usual fare - its easy
to text, send and receive messages and the options to store and forward
are great. The PHONEBOOK is as you would find in most new phones: Customisable
with photos of the person you're calling or is calling you, set different
ring tones and groups, etc, etc. The MP3 PLAYER and VIDEO are SUPERB!
The built-in speakerphone is really loud and although I haven't tried
other Mp3's, the sample song sounds just dandy. The video is of the
same ilk: clear with no distortion. The phone has Infra-red but the
great thing about the phone is that it is the first Samsung mobile to
have BLUETOOTH! I have only sent a contact (name & telephone number)
through Bluetooth so far to try it out and it worked a treat. I have
just ordered a Bluetooth dongle from eBay to transfer mp3's and mini
videos over. The MEMORY is HUGE! Each phone comes with over 80mb, yup
80MB of memory - enough to store over 20 mp3's! There's no MMC CARD
slot (like in the Nokia 6230) but with 80MB the lack of a expansion
slot won't be greatly missed. Please remember, Samsung have not intended
this phone to be a Smartphone - it doesn't compare. But if you compare
this phone with other "standard" mobiles like the Nokia 6230, 6260,
6170, Siemens SL65, etc then it is by far the best mobile on the market
today (things may change tomorrow, but today it is the best!). The NEGATIVES
of this phone have been briefly highlighted above - although they're
not all Samsung's fault - blame Orange for 2 major ones. However, the
lack of a data cable is a little mean. You can buy one quite cheaply
on the internet like eBay or better still, get a bluetooth dongle for
about £15.00 which will come with software to transfer mp3's, wallpapers,
videos, ringtones, etc... OVERALL, this is the best phone I have had
so far. It has many features - some you may not have ever thought existed
like PIN protecting certain "folders" like your MMS msgs, Emails, Songs
or Video files. It is easy to use (I haven't looked at the manual once)
and will last a long time to come. The only problem is, I'm dying for
Samsung to better themselves and come up with an even BETTER mobile.
Is this possible? Of course it is and remember we're all invited!

Phone's quality. I was looking for a new phone with an excellent camera
and was going to go for the se s700i, but they ran out of stock at the
shop, so i went for the d500 and, to be honest, i'm pretty glad as i
haven't found any kind of flaw with it yet. I love the camera quality
and the flash is definitely a good thing to have. The only reason i've
given it four stars and not five is cos i've only had it a short while
and so there's still a chance things could go wrong. Btw, can anyone
recommend a good case to get for it? Like anyone with any new toy, i
don't even wanna risk it getting scratched or damaged!

Firstly - WOW! What a great phone. I think the ratio between good and
bad reviews speaks reems so it's kind of pointless repeating the obvious
raves like the memory, styling, ease of navigation etc. However, I've
read some of the previous reviews with a mixture of agreement and sheer
surprise. Complaints about the standard of photos and vids ...buy a
digi camcorder (but it wont make phone calls so no doubt some of you
will complain about that!). Then there's the few dubious comments about
the speaker, the best has to be the person who asked what it's for -
maybe take a wee look at the instructions; even as early as page 9 should
give the game away as it's described as a "plug in speaker". I don't
think by any stretch of the imagination that my phone has added functions,
so why is it I have a built in speaker as well as the plug in? I assumed
it was a standard function but obviously not going by some of the "...it
should have..." comments. I suppose for listening to MP3's the plug
in is slightly better quality but for general hands free use, the built
in speaker is fine. Someone else seemed to think it doesn't have an
IrDA port but I wonder if they actually got a little confused as to
what phone they were reviewing. Oh yes, and the comment about the headphones
not suiting a particular person...go and buy another, more suitable
set then - they can't suit everyone and at least something has been
provided for instant use. The supplied headphones wouldn't be my 1st
choice but they work if needed in case my bluetooth headset vapourised
mysteriously. For anyone out there thinking of getting the D500 and
utilising these reviews for an informed decision, then go with the majority
- it is a great phone and does exactly what it says on the box! However,
if you want to use it as a full time MP3 player, then maybe buying an
MP3 player would be a better alternative. If you want to be the next
Spielberg or Lichfield, it may be best that you buy a camcorder/camera.
Finally, if the D500 screen isn't big enough for you, may I suggest
you go out and purchase a plasma TV from an electrical retailer. Sorry
if this sounds like a rant but please, why complain about things that
are never going to suit everyone? Better still, get to know your phone's
capabilities before commenting on them - you never know, reading the
instruction book might just help familiarise you with the layout and
functions. P.S. I am neither an anorexic or newborn but I am able to
use the keys effortlessly (but it doesn't do the ironing so maybe I
will have to conceed it's a rubbish phone... I think not!)

A HIGHLY OVER-HYPED PHONE.....Advance "Hype" of this phone does it no
credit now that we can actually see and use it....The screen is quite
small, much smaller than current phones on the market. The screen size
is further compromised by quite large borders for Service Provider Customization,
giving you about 1 inch square of wallpaper!!....The camera is POOR,
don't be fooled by "Megapixel size", The amount of megapixels is not
the only determinant of pic quality. The pic quality is worse than an
old Sharp GX10i let alone Sharps newer models...Weirdly disappointing....Construction
and size is of the usual really "plasticky" mini-brick format..although
as a brick it's smaller than the usual mobile brick..a welcome element,
also the colour makes it looks more appealing than the silver plastic
usually served up.....Keyboard slider is firm and easy to use in one
hand, but the buttons can be tricky to use due to them being lowered
into a bay with high walls restricting your fingers ...Fine if you're
anorexic, but otherwise somewhat difficult. The letters/numbers are
also tiny, giving you a headache trying to read them even as they are
well lit. Bluetooth works extremely well, synching easily with everything
I threw at it. Menu system is very easy to use as are the nav buttons
except the centre "ok" button, which again requires one to be anorexic
or new born....And now for the most stupid thing I've seen on a mobile
phone....You have to dis-assemble a pyramid of plastic to reveal a 1
inch square module to plug into the side of the phone in order to use
it as a speakerphone!!! What were these designers on!! The colour of
the plastic being brown/greyish makes the phone look quite good, especially
as the overall size of it is quite small. Size of text is SUPERB, nice
and large/clear. Great for browsing web pages. Overall, a strange phone,
not what you would regard as modern or current. The fact that it is
a current model of circa 2004 shouldn't fool you in to thinking that
it IS like a modern and capable phone, which it isn't. Ultimately, the
tiny screen size, difficult to see and use keypad, "Plug in loudspeaker",
will consign it very shortly to the usual 1 week wonder's grave. It
would compete well in the market if the year were 1990, which ultimately
is how this phone looks/functions. It's only redeeming factor is it's
excellent bluetooth connectivity, which is not a 1990 feature.....I'm
just off to the Post Office to send it back.

Got the phone yesterday from Carphone Warehouse and - WOW! Everything
about this phone is so refined...from it's looks, down to the way the
software works inside it. I'm amazed at how many features the phone
has and yet it works so flawlessly and fast - unlike my previous T610!
Camera = superb, Andy, you're a fool for knocking the phone over the
quality of the camera...it's perfectly acceptable and if you want super
quality...go buy a bloomin digital camera...NOT A PHONE! The screen
resolution and quality is outstanding...every single item is of high
resolution and very clear. Text is smooth and easy to read, with no
jagged edges as might be present on inferior phones (i.e SL55 :)) The
sliding mechanism is one up on the E800, a lot smoother, and no bad
noises when closing at speed. I don't know what Siemens were thinking
with the SL55 and not having it spring loaded...it just feels so rubbish
compared! MP3 player is a superb add-on feature. With 80MB of memory,
you can fit enough songs on it to keep you amused on your way to work,
and maybe even back again (although take the charger with you as you
might actually want to use it to call someone!) Messaging features are
in a league of it's own...writing text messages using either T9 or ABC
is effortless and once you've become accustomed to the keyboard, you'll
have messages whizzing away in seconds. The video recorder isn't something
I plan on making use of, but after having a little play, I must say
I'm impressed! It's no camcorder - by a long shot - but for those moments
where you just need to capture a video, the quality and resolution of
play back will more than suffice.

No doubt, phone looks great, the materials they used are much better than
on the E800 and the other popular handsets. It's a shame that the set
doesn't come with USB wire - even the super cheap NEC 616V has got it
in box. To be honest the only advantage for me is a high resolution
camera and big memory, otherwise the phone is plain like the Nokia 7210
launched 2 years ago, and it hasn't got even radio. Obviously Samsung
did not think that in-ear headphones are useless for many people (including
me) so I can forget about listening the MP3, becouse I can't plug in
the one that suits me. You will also find the problems with managing
your phonebook which annoying me most!! Conclusion - this phone only
looks nice and it has a good camera. If you are the Nokia user, stay
with it!! In terms of functionality and reliability no one can beat
them.

Just received this phone yesterday from Carphone Warehouse (sim-free)
... and I haven't been able to put it down! I was worried that trying
to txt on it would be a problem but its very similar to the Nokia OS
(without the annoying error msg coming up with 'App closed')! It's a
pity that there's no in-built speaker, but the additional accessory
(very cute triangular speaker) gives super sound quality - so no complaints
there! Camera quality is great (for a 1.3MP) and so is the zoom! The
flash on this camera is the best I've come across (compared to the Sony
Ericsson S700i)! It would be nice if Samsung had installed a copy +
paste function like on the more recent Nokia's ... but hey, you can't
have everything! Additional features, such as java games are fun to
fiddle round with for a while - but unless you're a hardcore mobile
gamer, don't fret! All in all, a great phone ... very cute to handle
and easy to get to grips with! BUY IT NOW, you won't regret it!

say........linked to the Bluetooth headset I purchased with it without
any problems. Am a little disappointed that there is no option to voicedial
from the phone book (but I can live with that) and to upload mp3's you
either need the Easy Studio software and data cable which it does not
come with, or an IRDA device which you also have to purchase separately,
although not from Samsung as far as I can tell (which is a bit frustrating,
but only cos I am impatient and want to do everything NOW). Even so,
it is still a fine little phone and is easy to use......60 mins of video
capture, great little camera, nice size screen....sharp and colourful.........meets
and in some cases exceeds what I was expecting!! :-)

Excellent usual Samsung features but the quality of the camera and video
leave an awful lot to be desired. In truth it really is overpriced and
over-rated. I've taken mine back and bought the Sharp GX30 - they're

outstanding handset, and the printed images, meet up to expectations
too! Bluetooth on a Samsung is an unheard of, so this truly is a break-through!
Initial prices are currently ranging from between £350-380 Sim
free, online to pre-order! It is a handset that is greatly sort after,
and the best (in my opinion) to come out over the next 6 months.
