Samsung D500 review

 Review: October 2004

Rating: 4 stars

In a nutshell: Hugely popular slide phone with 1.3 megapixel camera, video camera, music player & Bluetooth.

Compare prices | User reviews

Announced by Samsung in October 2004, and now available in the UK, the D500 combines the very best of Samsung's techology in every field: from cutting-edge TFT screen to megapixel digital camera to wireless connectivity. The phone is aimed both at high-end business users and the technology-hungry personal user market.

In many respects, the D500 can be viewed as an enhancement of the D410, which itself has much in common with the best-selling E800. Like these phones, the D500 has a slide-up design, which enables a large screen to be placed within a compact phone design. Many of the phones features are conveniently available on the front face, but a gentle push will make the slide mechanism open and close automatically, giving access to the full keypad below. Unlike the D410, the D500 has an internal aerial, giving it a more modern appearance, and removing the possibility of damage to the aerial. The phone is also lighter than the D410 at just 99g.

The display on the D500 is quite exceptional. With a size of 1.9 inches, a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels and 262k colours, it knocks most other phones dead, and is even bigger than the display on the D410. The screen uses TFT technology, making it bright and clear, suitable for use even in direct sunlight.

The camera has a resolution of 1.3 megapixels, making it simply the best camera phone available at the time of launch. The camera has a flash for low-light photography and a 7x digital zoom. The camera can also be used as a camcorder for making videos, with a 4x digital zoom.

The phone comes with an MP3 player, with bags of memory for storing audio tracks. MP3 clips can also be used as ringtones as an alternative to the 64-voice polyphonic MIDI ringtones that come supplied. MP3 ringtones offer the highest possible quality audio.

The phone incorporates some of the advanced technology introduced in the E800 to enhance voice clarity. The phone automatically senses the volume of the background noise and will increase the volume and clarity of the incoming call to make it more audible. In addition there is an integrated handsfree speakerphone.

The D500 is the first Samsung phone in the UK to incorporate Bluetooth™ wireless connectivity, and the phone also has a USB port for easy connection to a computer. The Bluetooth support is a full implementation, enabling data to be transferred as well as for connecting to a wireless headset or car kit.

The memory available in the D500 is a whopping 80 Mbytes - more than enough for storing videos and MP3 tracks, and enough for demanding business users too. For example, the phone can store over 1,000 megapixel images, 60 minutes of video, or up to 20 MP3 tracks.

Is there anything missing from the D500? The phone clearly addresses any shortcomings with the D410 by introducing an internal aerial, Bluetooth™ wireless connectivity and an expanded memory. Perhaps the only thing missing is the option to plug in an additional memory card - although frankly 80 Mbytes is more than adequate for most users. The phone lacks the Symbian operating system of a smartphone, which means that third-party applications are limited, but the D500 isn't a smartphone and it's not fair to compare it with one. In its class, we believe that the D500 is simply the best! The Samsung E720 is similar to the D500 but has a conventional clamshell format instead of the D500's slide-up design.

As mentioned, the D500 is now obsolete, and we recommend the newer Samsung D900i or Samsung G600.

Samsung D500 features include:

  • 1.3 megapixel camera (1280 x 1024 pixels) with flash and digital zoom
  • Video recording & messaging (176 x 144 pixels)
  • 262,144 colour TFT LCD display (176 x 220 pixels)
  • Music player (MP3/AAC)
  • Java™ games (3 embedded games)
  • Ringtones: 64-voice polyphonic and MP3
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth™, USB, IrDa, SyncML
  • Integrated handsfree speakerphone
  • Messaging : SMS (with learning T9), EMS, MMS
  • E-Mail client (POP3, IMAP4, SMTP) / vCard / vCalendar
  • Personal organiser functions
  • Phonebook (max 1000 entries)
  • Memory: 80 Mbytes
  • WAP 2.0, GPRS class 10
  • Tri-band (900/1800/1900MHz)
  • Size: 94 x 46 x 24 mm

I have had my samsung D500 for at least 10years, after inheriting from a foreign student who was going home.It has been really easy to use, and very reliable until two weeks ago, when the battery didn't want to charge. Bought a new battery off e.bay, but it didn't seem to want to work in my phone, took phone to shop, and she said that the phone itself had died. Most upset as it has pictures that were very sentimental to me.
So bought another D 500 off e.bay.Not cheap, found that the battery didn't work, but have put other battery in, and hey presto i have a phone back.Great

I've only just given away my old D500, which I've had for nearly six years and which has served as a reliable backup whenever newer phones have gone wrong. It's obviously very dated now, but I shall miss it. It's very user-friendly, good to make calls on as the speaker is very clear and it's ultra-reliable. Best handset I've ever had, without exception.

I have just bought my 3rd Samsung D500. The first one i had stolen after owning it for a very short time so had to buy another one. The second one i had for ages and loved it. One day I threw it on to my sofa as i did any other day and it bounced off the sofa onto a glass bottle and the screen cracked so I could no longer see anything. Since then i have wanted another D500. It is the only phone i have ever had that I have never wanted to replace and am now the proud owner of my 3rd D500. I do not use internet or anything like that on my phones but do use the mp3 player a lot and the D500 does everything i want. It is my perfect phone and fell in love with it the first time i saw it. I would recommend this little phone to anyone. In my opinion the best phone ever made.

As mentioned this is an obselete phone, but as my old one broke I had to root through my drawers to find this one as a temp. Amazingly it still works just fine. The battery can last up to about 5 or 6 days and texting/phoning is still okay. Graphics etc. are rubbish (a given seeing as it's six years old) but audio quality is fine and is probably the longest lasting phone I've ever had.

I love my D500, it's black, shiny, sexy, small, cute. I've had it for about 4 years and am now getting another phone BUT I'll always keep my little D500, it's been reliable, robust in itself, long battery life, massive storage, still looks as good as new. Altho tech these days is on the up I'm surprised this is no longer available/obsolete bcos it's a groovy and wonderful little phone. Also I enquired (not to sell it, just to enquire) how much it's worth to 'envirofone' and they said 3..yes three quid..having a laugh or what!

iv had the phone handed down to me from my older brother, he had it in 2005 and he gave it me late 2006. I had it untill the christmas of 2008, thats when i got my sony ericsson w580i. iv took my samsung to spain becouse i was scared incase i broke my ericsson. about 3 days ago i did break my w580i becouse of a little bit of condensation on the windowsil. so im back to the trusty samsung. my d500 has been in the washing machine 3 times and it still hasent broke. the only thing what is wrong with it is that the screen is cracked but that is my fault, i fell over on it. over all the camera isent as good as cameras in todays phones and the memory isent as good as i want it to be. but as time moves on every thing changed. but its got bluetooth, mp3, camcorder and a camera. it will do for me. ;)

ITS AMAZING. large memory, good quality camera, stylish, easy to use, bluetooth, infered, video camera - its got it all! i only have 2 concerns though.. this phone would be perfect if there was a memory card slot - but that doesnt really bother me, as it ahs a 90mb memory anyway, but its handy if you want more than 30 songs. and the battery life is quite poor, but its better than some of the previous phones that i have bought, and theres no real effort of having to charge it up overnight? this phone has survived alot. whoever said that they dropped their phone, and now it turns on and off randomly - it was your fault for dropping it. and saying that you need to be 'anorexic' fingers to use this phone is very misleading. obviously talking about another phone.. overall, i would like to say well done to samsung. i have bin through 4 years of this phone, so now im going to buy the samsung U600 another stylish phone

Quite a old phone now. Compared to other phones out now the camera quality isn't very good at all! Phone is quite chunky as well. Its not a great phone but if your looking for something basic its fine.

good phone, i have dropped mine loads and it still works. Simple to use and the text is clear to read. The camera isn't the greatest but if i wanted a brilliant camera i would buy one, not a mobile phone.

I have used many different makes and models of mobile phones which have their good and bad points, but the Samsung D500 has no bad points at all. I even asked to have another when I renewed my contract so I have two.... they are by far the easiest Samsung phone to use, I can only say that with years of experience of this phone there is no other phone as good, sad as they are classed as 'old' now.
