Samsung BD-F7500 review
|Review: November 2013|
In a nutshell: The Samsung BD-F7500 Blu-Ray player is expensive, but offers premium looks, superb Smart TV and networking, plus 4K upscaling.
The Samsung BD-F7500 is one of the few Blu-Ray players available that offers 4K upscaling.
Design & looks
The BD-F7500 looks quite different to the cheaper Samsung Blu-Ray players of 2013. A symmetric design with a brushed aluminium band mark it out as a premium product. The metal band is big on style, but less on stackability. The rest of the unit is glossy black plastic, but it has minimalist chic, with the tray deck and USB port concealed from view, and touch-sensitive buttons built into the front panel along the top edge.
Another feature that makes the F7500 stand out from the crowd is the fast boot time that enables it to start in just half a second. A dual-core processor drives the system and makes the user interface responsive and fast.
The star feature of the BD-F7500 is that it can upscale content to UHD or 4K resolution, for display on a UHD TV. These are now beginning to emerge, but they are very expensive. They offer 4 times the resolution of a Full 1080p HD screen.
In addition, the player handles both 2D and 3D Blu-Ray disks, DVDs including DVD+/-R and DVD+/-RW, and also CDs, including CD-R and CD-RW. As with all of Samsung's Blu-Ray players, playback quality is excellent.
A wide range of audio formats are supported, including 7.1 surround sound (DTS and Dolby decoding supported).
The BD-F7500 is well equipped for Smart TV and Catch-up/on-demand content streamed over the internet. The player includes native apps for Catch-up TV, Netflix, LoveFilm and Blinkbox. These include the BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, the 4oD service from Channel 4, and Demand 5 from Channel 5. There are also apps for YouTube, Facebook and Twitter and a web browser. Apart from the web browser, which is clunky to operate, these are all very easy to use from the remote.
The S Recommendation feature recommends content to you based on your viewing preferences. There are Fitness and Kids portals too, with even more content.
The player connects to a HD Ready TV via HDMI and there's an optical digital audio output for connecting to an external speaker system. A HDMI port enables connection to a second device such as an amp.
A USB port lets you plug in a USB or external hard drive and access music, photos or videos on your TV. A CD ripping button lets you easily convert audio CDs into MP3 format.
Internet access is available via an ethernet cable or the built-in Wi-Fi.
The Allshare screen sharing technology lets you display content from a Samsung smartphone on a compatible TV so you can view photos and videos and play games using your handset as a controller. You can also use this to stream content from your home PC.
If you have a Samsung TV, the Anynet+ feature lets you use just one remote control to control both devices. You can also use a compatible smartphone to control the TV.
Conclusion - excellent but expensive
The BD-F7500 isn't the right choice for most consumers. It costs twice as much as the BD-F6500 and although it's easily a better device, most people won't be able to justify the cost. Features like 4K upscaling and two HDMI outputs simply won't be used by most people.
However, if you have the cash to spend and want the best, this is easily the best Samsung Blu-Ray player we've seen. The combination of stylish looks, easy-to-use and comprehensive Smart TV, and UHD capability make it a gorgeous machine.
