Samsung BD-F5500 review

 Review: March 2013

Rating: 4 stars

In a nutshell: The BD-F5500 Blu-Ray player includes 3D playback and native apps for BBC iPlayer, LoveFilm and YouTube.

Design & looks

Samsung's 2013 Blu-Ray players feature an unusual asymmetric design with a curved corner. Apart from this, the design is quite plain, with a tray deck and touch key control button. The player is Energy Star 2.0 compliant and in-use energy consumption is an almost negligible 8.8W.

The player can play Blu-Ray disks as well as DVDs, including DVD+/-R and DVD+/-RW. It can also play CDs, including CD-R and CD-RW. The F5500 is a step up from the entry-level F5100 as it can also play 3D Blu-Ray disks.

When playing DVDs, the player can upscale to HD using Samsung's BD Wise feature. This also adjusts settings such as contrast and colour balance, and gives the best results for older DVDs.

Audio quality is good, with support for HD audio formats.

Smart TV

The BD-F5500 includes popular Smart TV apps like YouTube, BBC iPlayer, Netflix, LoveFilm and Facebook as native apps for ease-of-use.

The player connects to a HD Ready TV via HDMI and there's a coaxial digital audio output for connecting to an external speaker system.

A USB port in the front panel lets you plug in a USB or external hard drive and access music, photos or videos on your TV.

An ethernet connection enables internet access, but there's no built-in Wi-Fi.

If you have a Samsung TV, the Anynet+ feature lets you use just one remote control to control both devices.

Conclusion - a good 3D player, but missing Wi-Fi

The BD-F5500 is a step up from the entry-level BD-F5100, with the addition of 3D Blu-Ray playback. Accessing the BBC iPlayer, YouTube and LoveFilm is easy with the built-in apps. However, at an asking price of £90 we're wondering why there's no Wi-Fi support included.

A good player, but no wifi, no display and sometimes is crashing and must be unplugged for about 30 seconds and start over. One time when i was listening music from a memory stick it start opening the youtube channel over and over even when i try to watch a movie. I think it was some virus. After factory reset it was working fine. Īn the settings menu some settings are set by default to auto and it cant be changed. This is a big inconvenience. After all you can buy it. It is a nice and good player.
