Samsung BD-E6100 review
|Review: January 2013|
In a nutshell: A superb Blu-Ray player that does pretty much everything you could ask, yet costs little more than £100.
Best buy: Samsung BD-E6100 from Gameseek (£124.75)
Design & looks
Samsung's flagship Blu-Ray player is larger than its cheaper models, and it has a more upmarket look and feel. While there's nothing that particularly stands out about the design, it's a sleek, practical look that will fit in well with any contemporary home cinema kit. A discreet LED display shows system and disk information.
We like the fact that the device has Wi-Fi built in, so there's no messing about with dongles or wires.
This player supports Blu-Ray playback in both 2D and 3D. It can also handle DVDs, including DVD+/-R and DVD+/-RW, and CDs, including CD-R and CD-RW. A handy CD ripping feature is available, for converting audio CDs to digital format.
When playing DVDs, the player can upscale from standard definition to high definition using Samsung's BD Wise feature. This also adjusts settings such as contrast and colour balance, and gives the best results for older DVDs.
The BD Wise Web feature also optimises internet videos (see the Smart Hub section below) by boosting picture quality so that images are crisp and text is legible.
Audio quality is good, with support for HD audio formats.
By connecting the device to the internet, you can use it to access Samsung's Smart Hub services, including the BBC iPlayer, LoveFilm, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. There's also a growing library of web-connected TV Apps.
Although Wi-Fi is built in, we'd recommend that you make use of the ethernet cable if possible if you're serious about making use of the Smart Hub features. If your broadband router isn't easily accessible, you can run a broadband connection via your electrical sockets using HomePlug adapters.
The player connects to a HD Ready TV via HDMI and there's an optical audio output for connecting to an external speaker system.
A USB port lets you plug in a USB drive and access music, photos or videos on your TV.
Internet access is possible via an ethernet cable or by Wi-Fi. You can also wirelessly stream movies, music and other content from mobile devices and PCs.
If you have a Samsung TV, the Anynet+ feature lets you use just one remote control to control both devices.
Conclusion - outstanding features and value
The BD-E6100 is an outstanding Blu-Ray player, offering full HD 3D playback, as well as upscaling of legacy DVDs. Samsung's Smart Hub features are an excellent addition, and connectivity is also impressive, with built-in Wi-Fi enabling full integration with your home network. You can easily stream videos, photos and music from the internet, from your home PC or from smartphones/tablets and view everything on the TV.
The E6100 feels like a better option than the mid-range E5500, as it costs only slightly more and already includes Wi-Fi. With a retail price of around £100, it's hard to imagine getting any more for your money.
