Samsung BD-E5500 review
|Review: January 2013|
In a nutshell: This inexpensive Blu-Ray player offers 3D playback, plus excellent connectivity, including a Wi-Fi option.
Design & looks
The BD-E5500 is a compact Blu-Ray player, ideal when space is tight. It's not going to win any style awards, but it has a simple, practical design that will blend in with a modern home cinema setup. An LED front display shows information about the disk currently playing.
This is the cheapest Samsung player to support 3D Blu-Ray playback. It can also play 2D Blu-Ray disks, as well as DVDs, including DVD+/-R and DVD+/-RW, and CDs, including CD-R and CD-RW.
When playing DVDs, the player can upscale to HD using Samsung's BD Wise feature. This also adjusts settings such as contrast and colour balance, and gives the best results for older DVDs.
Audio quality is good, with support for HD audio formats.
By connecting the device to the internet, you can use it to access Samsung's Smart Hub services, including the BBC iPlayer, LoveFilm, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.
The player connects to a HD Ready TV via HDMI and there's an optical audio output for connecting to an external speaker system.
A USB port lets you plug in a USB drive and access music, photos or videos on your TV.
An ethernet connection enables internet access, and you can also buy an optional Wi-Fi dongle that will let you wirelessly stream movies, music and other content from mobile devices and PCs.
If you have a Samsung TV, the Anynet+ feature lets you use just one remote control to control both devices.
Conclusion - good value and well-featured
The E5500 model costs a fraction more than the entry-level BD-E5300, but it adds 3D support and the option of upgrading to a Wi-Fi dongle. If these aren't features you particularly want from a Blu-Ray player, then you can save some pennies by downgrading to the E5300. That's what most people choose to do, judging from the relative popularity of the two models.

Mine is slow, constantly freezes, generally stinks. Maybe it's faulty and I just assumed it sucks. Who knows. I originally bought it because it advertised being Netflix ready on the box. When I plugged it all in, it didn't support Netflix. When I called support, they said it was only Netflix ready in the USA. That's how the disappointment began, and it never improved!
