Samsung A300 Review

Phone rating:

Review: July 2003.

The Samsung A300 is quite a few years old now, but was a very stylish phone in its time, with its silver case, flip design and external display. The external screen shows you the name/number of anyone who calls, as well as the signal strength and battery level. The A300 does lack features that newer phones have, such as polyphonic ringtones, colour display, etc. and the battery life is poor. However, the phone is user-friendly, "feels" good in the palm, and still looks good!

  • 6-line internal display plus external display
  • Predictive text messaging
  • 48 ringtones plus ringtone composer
  • WAP
  • Phone memory
  • Built-in infra-red modem
  • Caller display
  • Downloadable screensavers
  • Size: 81 x 42 x 22 mm
  • Weight: 83g
  • Battery standby: 80 hours
  • Battery talktime: 4 hours
  • Vibration alert
  • Dual band

Only fault as far as i can see is the front screen id glad and it broke within a few weeks of buying. But hey it still works it is truly snap outstanding cell phone

For me this phone should go in the hall of fame of phones. It is even today for me the most beautiful and charismatic phone ever made. It is like those old classic cars that almost become more beautiful over time. When it came out it had an almost revolutionary design and still today looks modern. I have had it for 5 years now and it has worked PERFECTLY. I want to keep it for 5 more just to see if it breaks...I doubt it will.

I have owned the A300 for about 3 years and after experimenting with a modern Sagem model and the Samsung T100 (which I also liked) I am using it once more. Some points raised by previous reviewers are true (eg poor/average battery life) but this phone feels good and is easy to use, is robust, and performs all I want of a phone. It has real charisma and I would not be surprised if it is still in use in one or two years time.

Funny how people from developing countries don't appear to like this phone, they must have very high expectations! The other negative reviews here appear to be from children who want all the gadgets and have the ability to communicate only in text speak! Anyway, the A300. It's an excellent little phone, solid reliable and small. Battery standby is good but calls knock the life down a fair bit which is the only negative point. You can get a larger battery which is about 2mm thicker but has double the life so not a great problem really! I've had mine about 4 years and have since had 2 upgrades to all singing and dancing Nokias but I have gone back to using this phone. I think that says a lot, don't you?

In the age of color mobile you may think this phone suks! But in real, this is the standard phone what mobile phones are made for. And worried about battery? Ok, then are you going the travell the whole world with your mobile with one charge!? It's display is crystal clear and the small bluish display on the flip cover looks too sexy! But one thing is to say its keypad is a bit hard to push. But where it is the matter of style then you should compromise it? And for your kind information I have been using the phone for 5 years with a little trouble and still admiring! mashrufz@gmail.com

This is a very cute little phone, and, given that it's few years old, who could ask for more? It is very easy to use, the 4 directional buttons (which all Nokias appear to lack) are very intuitive if a little fiddly. good clear display, very robust. The only real problem was that mine couldn't do vibrate AND sound - only one or the other, despite claiming to be able to! Anyone else have this problem, or was mine just faulty? I've now managed to kill the display with an unlucky drop. I must have dropped it countless times and it's always been fine, but not this time! I'm impressed by how much punishment it took, very robust, but it finally died. I think people who say it's rubbish for not having mp3, bluetooth, colour display, camera, teleport etc are completely missing the point. Judge a phone on what it CAN do and how well it does it, not what it CAN'T do. After all, no-one would say a TV is rubbish for not being able to download mp3s - it's just not what it's designed for!

this phone is my baby!!! i love it to bits, i've had it for 2 and a half years now and it is time to get a camera phone, but i will be gutted to give it up :-( the best thing about it is, its indestructible! the amount of times it has been dropped, it should have broken by now! i even walked into a wall (drunk!) with the phone in my pocket...the battery got dented but it still worked! lol. the only bad things are the fact that you can only store 10 texts, which is annoying if you have friends who send about 3 messages at once, because then you have to delete some and wait aaaggges for the others to come through. also, it does scratch very easily...dont take it on a beach as the sand will wreck it! but as long as you are careful it would be okay. when i first got the phone, everyone was amazed that i could fit it into my purse...now everyone and their dog has a silver flip phone so the novelty has worn off a bit...i liked being the only one! okay, so this phone is a bit old now, but who cares...it still looks brilliant and it will never break. if samsung brought it out again (only with a camera this time), i would definitely buy it again!

Ok, so it's not colour and it doesn't have polyphonic ring tones or games or a camera, but do we really need these things? A mobile is for phoning people and texting people. It does me fine! Girls, it's also small enough to fit in your handbag on a sat night out, along with purse, fags, lipgloss, keys etc.. Definately a girlie phone. And it has been set up so a very simple 'lover' graphic comes up when the bloke rings. VERY reliable and the slim battery life isn't too bad either. I would highly recommend this phone if you're a female, looking for something simple and it doesn't look too bad. Just try not to scratch it, that would help it look better for longer!

I've had this phone now for about 18 months now and on the whole, it's a dinky little phone that looks good and doesn't feel like a house brick. However, there are some notable problems with this phone, especially the battery life and reception. My battery lasts about 2 days before I need to recharge it and if I forget to recharge it, I'm usually woken up at 3am by a very loud and annoying "low battery life" tone. I don't like the fact that you can't switch off these warning tones. For some reason my phone switches itself off when it feels like it - I think it's due to the battery connection and yes, there are 2 batteries but there is no difference when I change them. And reception is quite bad in some areas and if my phone loses all reception, it switches itself off!!! Apart from this, I like the phone. I don't use predictive text although I would like to be able to change it so it automatically goes to small letters, rather than predictive text when you open "Write Message." There aren't any games on this phone but I didn't buy it for the games. I think the ringtones need to be louder because I can't hear it when it rings but I like the red light flashing when you receive a text or a call (if the phone's on silent). I'm not sure if I would buy this phone again because it loses reception and battery life too much but if you just need a phone, just a phone without tons of features, I'd recommend it. If you want an "all-singing all-dancing" phone then choose a Nokia.

I got this phone 2 years ago then upgraded to a nokia 3510i but came back to it having given it away to my sister in law whilst a bit well on! Have no regrets though cos although this phone doesnt have load of features, I find it really straightforward, 110% reliable and small enough to carry about in my pocket. There are some extremely handy things about it. Firstly, the flashing light on the corner turns red when a message arrives so it catches your eye if you've missed the tone. Secondly you can alter the shortcut keys meaning that I've got the very handy calculator, todo list and diary at the touch of one button. Thirdly, unlike a Nokia, it stays clear of fluff and dirt and you never have to take it apart to clean it. Battery life is not great but I charge it when I go to bed so I never have a prob. I would have liked the diary to have been more effective. It has very little memory and only one memo per day. The wap stuff is slow and not very good and there are no games b ut in all honesty, it saves me fiddling about with the phone everyday instead of doing any work!

Why is it then that a number of people who buy a phone complain about the missing features they would like such as games or more number 2 use in txts etc. This is a lovely little standard phone and it does the job a phone should. If its games u seek then why not venture in buying a phone that has such features linking to this. I love this phone ive had it a long time now and unlike my old nokia phone it has never once stoped working or just died. The Samsung A300 is just a phone that does the job required and if u bought it for the wrong reasons then its u to blame not the phone, capeesh!!!!

This is quite a good phone but I wasn't very pleased with it. It doesn't really have much to offer. No colour screen, no camera, no polyphonic ringtones, no picture messages. It's quite a boring phone really. With the text messages, you can only fit up to 160 characters into one text, whereas, with Nokia's you can have up to double that ammount. The maximum ammount of messages you can store in your inbox is 15 (that's including your outbox aswell) so that's not a lot at all. Whenever you switch the phone on, a series of tones are played, which, to start with is quite cute and sweet but after a while, when you can't stop it from going off, it starts to get on your nerves. It's also not very useful if you want to turn your phone on without anyone knowing, like in school! The key pad feels quite nice, but when you press the keys, the clicking sound is soooooooo loud. The navigational keys are the only quiet ones and that's not much use for trying to text someone without being noticed. I've noticed that, should you drop this phone on a hard surface, the battery tents to come unattached and it scratches so easily you'd be better off wrapping it up in bubble wrap. The inner screen has a backlight which is a horrible bright green colour, in my opinion it should be changed to match the outer screen, which is a nice bright blue colour. When you put the phone on vibrate mode, you would expect there to be no 'low battery beeps' when the battery is low, but with not this phone, when the battery is low, it will make sure you know about, even on vibrate mode! There are hardly any websites where you can find decent ringtones for this phone. When I FINALLY found a site and saved it to favourites, The computer went wrong and I lost everything and I couldn't find the site ever again! There are 4 items on the menu that I've never used before (I've had the phone over a year!) Them being: Network Services, Wap Browser, Vodafone and Security. I would've used security but I don't feel the need to set a PIN code or anything. The phone looks really cute because it's small and that, but looks aren't everything! (Unless you're a man!) Over all, if I was to offer someone some advise on this phone, the only thing that would be is: DON'T BUY IT!!! Although it looks as though I despise this phone, I actually QUITE like it!

Had this phone for almost a year now and am upgrading to the new Samsung E700. The A300 is, well, steady away as my mate would say. It won't set the world on fire but it is a good little phone for people who want just that, a phone. It doesn't have any games and the ringtones are, unimaginative shall i say. I find the txt composer a bit awkward to use, having to change case and that myself, but you do get used to it. If you have the choice look at the A800 or E700. However, its not a bad phone, but not awesome either. Just...well, steady away!

Had this phone for about a year, and although it doesn't have lots of classy features, am amazed by its durability. It's been thrown against walls, dropped from great heights and god knows what else and still works as well as when i first got it. Compared to other flip phones i've had, like the motorola V50, its really sturdy. Brilliant phone if your a bit rough like me!

The samsung A300 attracted me as it was obviously the nicest phone in the shop at the time. Upon purchase the problems with it started to arise! Ringtones are TERRIBLE and there's no way to get any more. The predictive text messaging does'nt save any numbers so u will be constantly typing out the same slang words over and over again! No games but i never have time to sit and play mobile games! That's what my xbox is for! I got rid of it after a year as it was so boring and difficult to use. Oh yeah and whatever you do, don't press the red button once u've finished writing a text. I've done it time and time again by accident! u'll know when u do it!

Had my A300 for a year now and it has been excellent. Came with standard and heavy duty batteries which means I always have a charged battery where ever I am. The phone is an excellent product and has never given any trouble, and I never have any problems with texting (maybe I only use predictable words) Styling is neat and practical, I like the clam shell design. Only complaint is the ring tones are too quiet and not always easy to hear if the phone is in your pocket.

Nice looking phone - had it one year and have had no problems. Voice quality/reception are both very good when compared with my old Nokia. However, I send a lot of text messages and this phone is UTTERLY AWFUL for this - especially when compared to a Nokia. You cannot add words to the dictionary (and lets face it - the standard dictionary is fairly poor) and the user interface in this mode is badly thought out. Back to Nokia for me.

My wife has an A800, which is cool, but I prefer the looks of the A300 - more macho than the A800! Never had any problems with the phone. Good reception, excellent battery life. A300 is too expensive, too unreliable, not comfortable to use. I own one for 10 moth now, and here is list of problems that I have: 1. Battery fixtures got broken after first time I have droped it 2. Ring tones too quiet, if I put it in my pocket no chance that I will hear it 3. Lousy connection quality in weak reception areas, where Nokia has no problems at all 4. Phone lies about reception quality, there where many cases when people where not able to reach me while phone showed full reception 5. Phone menus are really anoying, it takes 4 clicks to set allarm clock (that is if you figured out that you may use keys as shortcuts) That was last Samsung product that I have bought.

I've owned this phone for over a year now and I have to say I still love it! My phones have a very hard life getting dropped and knocked (even buried in sand after being trodden on by a horse!!). It's simple to use and very reliable. OK you don't get games and the the batteries are not that great - although having 2 more than makes up for that. It does look a little worn now but I'm so amazed it is still in one piece and working I don't care. Because they are small enough to go in any pocket you can take them everywhere which probabley means they have to be tough to survive. I'm now upgrading to the samsung s300 but I will keep this phone as a useful spare. This is the phone for people who want to do much, much more than just look good. If you know you are active GET IT.

I've been reading reviews of Sony Ericssons and Nokias on this site and I am amazed at how unreliable they seem to be. The Samsung A300 is 100% reliable in my experience - I can't imagine it turning itself off or anything like that. It's a cool looking phone, nice and small, gorgeous silver finish (mine is 18 months old and just one tiny scratch - take reasonable care and it won't get damaged). Only downside is the quiet ringtones. Sure there are newer phones with more gadgets, but if you're looking for a phone, you can't possibly go wrong with this one. Samsung A800 looks good too. I would definitely buy a Samsung when I upgrade - maybe the V200 if I can afford it :)

I have owned mobile phones for the past 7 years, I have always had Nokia handsets. When this phone came out about 18 months ago I was seduced by its styling and so upgraded through Orange. To be perfectly honest, there is nothing really WRONG with this handset, it works...BUT the thing I have found frustrating is the terrible text messaging facility that struggles to keep up with an experienced texters fast typing...The predictive text function is the most dreadful I have come across, it does not recognise many simple everyday words that is very frustrating. In addition, after just a couple of months of light use, the silver colour of the phones body started to come off and it has looked dreaful ever since. The battery life is a joke, you'll get perhaps two days standby on a fully charged battery, which is dreadful and very impractical. Finally the menus are not designed logically and navigation is far more complicated than I would expect. My advise? Don't bother with this handset.
