Mobile phone of the year 2013

By S21, 25 Oct 2013, last updated 22 Nov 2013

Thanks to everyone who voted in our 2013 Phone of the Year award. We're pleased to announce that the winner is the HTC One, with a decisive 27% of the total votes.

In second place was the Samsung Galaxy S4, followed closely by the Sony Xperia Z1. The poor old iPhone 5s didn't even make it into the top 3.

You can view the full results below. It's clear from these that Android is the dominant operating system for 2013, at least among S21 users. Microsoft can take some comfort from the fact that the Nokia Lumia 925 came in just behind the iPhone. And in contrast to last year, where Samsung dominated, the votes are much more evenly spread between manufacturers this year, indicating that competition is thriving in the smartphone world - a fact that can only be good for consumers.

Best buy: Mobile phones from O2 (£0.00)

Apple iPhone 5s
The iPhone 5s. It's such a nice phone. It's the fastest, the most beautiful, has arguably the best OS and one of the best cameras. But in some areas Apple is still playing catch-up, which is why the almost unbelievable price tag makes us think twice before fully endorsing it.
  HTC One
HTC's all-metal 4G Android flagship. Featuring a 1080p display, UltraPixel camera and a quadcore processor.
HTC One Max
The HTC One Max scales up the HTC One with a massive 5.9 inch screen. But the size and weight of this device mean that you'll need heavy-duty pockets to carry it!
  LG G2
The LG G2 is a supercharged superphone, but the limited onboard memory and lack of a memory card slot could be a deal-breaker.
Nokia Lumia 925
The Nokia Lumia 925 is the first Windows Phone 8 superphone, with an 8.7 megapixel PureView camera, a HD+ AMOLED display, and a premium design aluminium body.
  Samsung Galaxy Note 3
A monster screen and monster specs make the Galaxy Note 3 perfect for power users. The ugly fake leather on the back and its sheer bulk must count against it, but overall it scores 4.5 out of 5.
Samsung Galaxy S4
A 5 inch 1080p screen, quad-core power, eye-control and touchless interface are just a few of the S4's highlights.
  Sony Xperia Z
At launch, almost certainly the best smartphone in the world, the Xperia Z offers a superslim waterproof design with the world's first 5 inch 1080p display and an extraordinary 13 megapixel camera.
Sony Xperia Z1
The Sony Xperia Z1 is a serious candidate for the best smartphone in the world. It's big and expensive, but offers a 1080p HD screen, 20 megapixel camera, blazingly fast processor and exceptional battery life.
  Sony Xperia Z Ultra
An ultra-large, ultra-powerful smartphone that's also ultra-thin!

Just wanted to let everybody know that Sony have the worst warranty and customer service i have ever experienced. Phones are obviously good but if, like me, you always find yourself using the warranty service within a 2 year contract then take a long hard think about alternative brands because they suck

[Editor's note - thanks for the detailed review Simon, we've moved it to our Xperia Z1 page.]
