Panasonic TX-L39E6B review

 Review: November 2013

Rating: 4 stars

In a nutshell: The Panasonic TX-L39E6B is an excellent 39 inch TV offering a superior viewing experience, good Smart TV and outstanding connectivity. It's also gorgeous to look at!

The Panasonic TX-L39E6B is the 39 inch version of the TX-L42E6B that we reviewed earlier.

Format & design

39 inches is a new size format, and it bridges the gap between the small (32") and medium (42"). It's a good size for anyone with a smallish room, either for personal viewing or sharing with one or two others.

The E6B is a lovely-looking TV with an ultra narrow bezel around the screen and a transparent strip below. It's also one of the slimmest TVs around. The standard remote is user friendly with nice big buttons and Panasonic has revamped its menu system for 2013, making the TV a pleasure to use.

Picture quality

This 39 inch TV uses an IPS display, in common with Panasonic's high-end LED TVs and it has two outstanding features. The first is that it produces a very natural colour palette and the second is that it provides wide viewing angles, although this is perhaps less important on a small screen.

Having said that, the display doesn't generate the deepest of blacks, and so it's best viewed in well-lit rooms or for daytime viewing. In these situations it excels thanks to its bright images.

Processing of both standard-def and high-def input is impressive, with the TV delivering top notch viewing all round.

Audio quality

This TV has 2 Full Range stereo speakers delivering a total power output of 2 x 10W. Panasonic's V-Audio surround sound manages to bring out some depth from the modest speaker system. For a small format television, sound quality is good.

Smart TV

The TV enjoys the benefit of Panasonic's VIERA Connect Smart TV functionality. This includes youtube, the BBC iPlayer, facebook, twitter, Skype and Netflix. There's also a web browser with HTML5 support. It does lag behind Samsung's Smart TV however, with no LoveFilm app or ITV Player for example.

Connectivity is much better on this model than on the cheaper Panasonic models. There are 3 HDMI ports, plus built-in Wi-Fi and ethernet for connecting to the internet. Legacy devices are supported with component/composite and SCART connectors, and you can output sound using the digital optical audio output. You can also plug in a USB device to view video, music or photos and you can connect the TV to a networked PC or laptop via DLNA to use as a media centre.

With a compatible smartphone you can download the VIERA Remote2 app and use this to control the TV. You can also view content from the smartphone on the TV screen.

In addition, the TV comes with a built-in Freeview HD tuner.

Conclusion - recommended for smaller rooms

The 39 inch size format has a lot to like in a smaller room, and the TX-L39E6B is the best we've reviewed in this size. Picture quality is good, connectivity and Smart TV are excellent and even the audio quality isn't bad.

Of course, you could also consider a 40-inch TV and Samsung's range is recommended, with its outstandingly good Smart TV being the star attraction.
