Panasonic TX-50EX750B review

 Review: May 2017

Rating: 5 stars

In a nutshell: The EX750B is the top-end model in Panasonic's 2017 range of LED TVs and it's a UHD HDR model. The 50-inch screen is a very good size for family viewing, and this model is a solid all-rounder, with excellent picture quality, good Smart TV and connectivity, and a neat and flexible design.

Panasonic EX750 review: Design & looks

The Viera TX-EX750 Ultra HD TV sits at the top of Panasonic's 2017 line-up of LED TVs, although the company is heavily pushing its more expensive range of OLED televisions. Last year's flagship LED TV, the DX902B, also continues into 2017.

The EX750 (also sometimes called the EX780B) is a smart-looking TV, very thin thanks to its edge backlighting system, and with a thin metal frame surrounding the screen.

The screen is mounted on a silver base that's highly adaptable. Not only does it swivel, so you can adjust the viewing angle, but you can also raise and lower the height of the TV on the stand (the lift function is not available on the larger 65" model). We have our doubts about whether many people will truly find this useful, however, and if you have young children, cats or dogs, or unruly visitors, you may find the stand crashing to the floor with unhappy consequences.

Picture quality

The EX750B builds on the impressive results of last year's DX750B. It's a 4K TV with full HDR capability. For 2017, Panasonic has introduced "HDR Pro", which means that the TV meets the HDR10 standard, and will also be compatible with the HLG standard, which is the new format that will be used by broadcasters like the BBC and Sky to show UHD HDR content. It also includes support for HEVC and VP9, so the TV is fully future-proofed.

The EX750B uses Panasonic's impressive "Super Bright" technology to bring deep blacks and bright highlights to the screen - vital to get the best out of HDR content, but just as important when viewing non-HDR material. The screen uses a basic implementation of local dimming too, with a number of individually-variable lighting zones, which assists in delivering a better dynamic contrast range. Viewing angles are relatively wide too, for an edgelit VA LCD panel.

The HCX2 processor faithfully recreates colours, especially with HDR content, and motion processing is excellent too, with the Back Light Motion rate upgraded to 2,400Hz, making for judder-free movement.

Overall, this is an excellent TV for family viewing, sport and films.

3D

Very few TVs still offer this feature, but the EX750B does. In fact it's the only 2017 Panasonic model that supports 3D. You'll need to buy a pair of Active 3D glasses to make use of this feature.

Audio quality

The audio quality of the EX750B is nothing special. A pair of 10W full-range speakers succeeds in recreating dialogue, but depth is lacking, despite the simulated surround sound. We'd recommend the addition of a dedicated soundbar or home cinema speakers to enjoy this TV at its best.

Smart TV

Panasonic's Smart TV system is called my Home Screen 2.0, and it's a reasonably comprehensive system, with support for BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, All 4, My5, Netflix 4K, Amazon Instant Video 4K, and YouTube 4K, with HDR support for streaming. Freeview and Freesat tuners are included too.

The remote control includes a handy Netflix button.

Connectivity

The EX750B comes with built-in Wi-Fi support and an ethernet connection, plus 4 HDMI connections, all of which support the 4K HDCP2.2 standard, and one of which is Audio Return Channel (ARC) compatible, for connecting to an A/V receiver. There's also a combined component/composite input and a digital audio optical output for hooking up to legacy AV devices, but no SCART connection.

3 USB ports (one with USB 3.0 support) are also included, as well as Bluetooth keyboard & mouse support, and easy mirroring of compatible smartphones and tablets. You can stream content from your other home devices, and Panasonic's Viera remote app for iOS and Android turns your smartphone or tablet into a TV remote controller with added functionality.

Conclusion - a solid HDR performance

Not all HDR televisions are created equally, but the Panasonic EX750B puts in a performance that's better than most. It's not the best either, and not in the same league as the flagship DX902, nor Samsung's very impressive MU7000 or MU8000, but those TV's all cost more. The EX750B holds its head above cheaper competitors and is a very good all-round TV that will satisfy the vast majority of viewers.

The EX750 has a RRP of £1299.99, and that's not too high, but we'd expect the price to fall to £1,000 or less in time for the Black Friday sales, and that will make it an excellent buy.

External HD recording?

The last three Panasonic TV's I bought all had a USB output to use an external Hard Drive to record programmes and acted as a pause and rewind. I can't see whether this has one or not.
