Panasonic GD87 Review
Phone rating:
Review: August 2003. Updated July 2005.
The GD87 is Panasonic's first digital camera mobile phone. The camera
has 4 modes (Full Colour, Black and White, Sepia and Negative), a digital
zoom, Night Shot Mode and a framing function. Pictures can be saved
as screensavers or sent via MMS. A nice feature (missing on some other
camera phones) is that you can attach a picture to an entry in your
phone book, so that person's picture appears when they call you. Neat.
The Panasonic GD87 has an excellent display with 65,000 colours, ideal
for use with the camera. The display is TFT and is therefore of high
quality. The GD87 also features a small external display, which displays
details such as the caller's identity.
The main feature that lets down the GD87 is the poor quality of the
camera - just 0.1 megapixels. This is understandable in an early camera
phone, but there are now so many better camera phones on the market,
it's not really worth considering. It is also an unreliable phone.
Features of the Panasonic GD87 include:
- 65,000 colour display
- Built-in digital camera (110k resolution)
- Polyphonic ringtones (16 voice) plus recordable ringtones
- Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), email
- WAP 1.2.1, GPRS
- Predictive text messaging
- 5-way navigational key
- Phone book (200 names & numbers) with pictures
- Infra-red modem
- Wallpaper & screensaver
- Size: 98 x 49 x 23 mm
- Weight: 103g
- Battery standby: up to 220 hours
- Battery talktime: 1.5 - 7 hours
- Vibration alert
- Tri band

Without doubt the worst phone I've ever owned. I'll be returning to
Nokia or Sony as soon as my contract is up. Once it starts turning itself
off, and you get the repeated SIM ERROR message that's it. The phone's
OS is evidently too much content, a nod in the right direction at style
and no thoughts whatsoever about the practical nature of using a phone
or how overworked the processor is. Excuses by manufacturers / networks
/ shops / engineers / programmers that phones do crash are unacceptable,
as are repeated and frequent crashes on a PC (which is why I use a Mac)
and won't be using a panasonic any more just don't bother buying it
it's a waste of money.

I can only store ten items in the SMS - Pathetic. Also why are there
no games available for this phone?? The infrared is the life saver,
downloading pictures, and texting is easier to use, but the number section
doesnt always work, and the camera is brilliant, but the ring tones
that come as standard are rubbish as well as the wallpaper (Panasonic
take note - women are not going to be the only customers, so get rid
of those pathetic flowers. However the memory needs more space, as you
cant save much stuff. I have to say its rather poor quality, and Panasonic
will not get my custom ever again. Panasonic - I hope you are reading
this, when are you going to actually compete against the other manufacturers,
instead of dragging behind. Evan the first Nokia is better and thats
saying a lot.

There is a huge overeaction apparent on this page about the panasonic
gd87. 1,It is slow writing text. 2, It does not have stunning battery
life.3, it does not hold many sms messages. BUT It is a stunning product
which incorporates good looks with above adverage fuctionality. 1, The
photographs are excellent. 2, The battery is ok as long as you top up
every couple of days. 3. The text does have that dictionary thing and
various features to increase speed. 4. Everyone I know who has seen
mine is envious( nokia users) I bought mine on EBay and have had it
two weeks, I have always had Nokias and they are not without faults
believe me. The Panasonic is not a Nokia and therefore a different beast
to master, but I have not read the manual and can use all its functions
now with ease. Ignore the negative on this site and ask yourself the
following question. Why have the people on here purchased a GD87 if
the phone they had was so perfect... All mobiles are a compromise to
some extent. This is an excellent phone .

Both my Mum and I have this phone and we've had nothing but trouble!
It costs a bomb and hardly works now! It turns itself off at least seven
times a day, and it takes at least five attempts to send an SMS because
it keeps crashing. Sent my phone back to Panasonic and they updated
the software which has done absolutely nothing to solve the problem.
The Panasonic Consumer Hotline is a complete joke, I was on the phone
at least a quarter of an hour and couldn't get through to them at all.
I'm desperately trying to find a way of getting our money back now!

Was an excellent phone when I first got it used to do my head in regards
i used have a nokia and when typing a text you could hit the hangup
key and it would save what you had already typed so you could go back
to it and carry on. everything else was spot on with the phone camera
is a great assett enabling me to rember what i had done the night before.
But now I find that when the phone is just sat there not being used
it restarts, when I am starting to make a call it restarts when typing
and sending texts it restarts. Then once it has restarted if I continue
trying to make a call upon it coming back online full reception it can
restart 5-6 times in a row or take 10 mins to connect just leave it
there on handsfree with number flashing on the screen then after then
ten mins you get the calling tone. wap is very unreliable. called orange
and panasonic need to get the software flashed for updates only 6 places
in the uk do it, all in london bristol or manchester closest bei ng

My Gd87 started off as a brilliant 'phone - easy to use -good pic's
which you could send to your computer (not by e-mail 'cos I couldn't
sort that out even with the so called help at Orange). Then I crunched
the screen (actually I did that shortly after getting the thing but
it was only minor and the 'phone still worked o.k). A friend suggested
buying a used 'phone and swapping over the screen 'cos they cost an
arm and both legs to replace - so - I started looking around on the
internet and quite by accident found this site.........that was the
kiss of death.........a previously good 'phone immediately degenerated
in to a worthless heap of scrap which wouldn't make or receive calls
(either left them hanging or rejected them) and also rejected any form
of text or MMS. I've now had to contact Orange and pay for a replacement,
so my feelings about the GD87 are a bit mixed - in saying that 2 friends
have the same 'phone and haven't had any problems what-so-ever - just
have to make sure they don't log on to this site and attract the mobie
gremlins...!!!!!!!!!!!

the p*sspoor Panasonic software to the phone you have to buy a lead

Just noticed my GD87 playing up and rebooting. At first I thought it
was just a network problem, but have found that it reboots when send
text messages and the message is deleted. I worked out how to get round
it by saving the mail prior to sending it so if your phone reboot while
sending, you can at least resend it without have to write it all out
again. It an okay phone, but I get the impression that most phones aren't
built to last more that 12 months anyway.

it switches itself off when it feels like it, messages take ages to
get through (has already ruined my love life!), barely any reception,
says 'emergency calls only', calls freeze when you try to make them.
I have called up Orange a zillion times who told me its a fault with
the phone and to phone up Panasonic. I tried ringing them, but they
were constantly engaged (no doubt because all their customers were trying
to call them), eventually got through to another department who told
me that they would leave a message. When someone did call me back, they
said it was testing that Orange were doing on the phone and that basically
it needed new software to update it. They have now sent me a bag to
send my phone back, but whos responsibility is it here....Orange, Panasonic
or Phones 4 U (that don't work and want to throw off a cliff). Surely
if I've bought something that doesn't work then they need to give me
a new phone....!! I can't wait until my contract ends in 6 months time.....Someone

This is the worst phone I've ever owned, it's absoloutly horrendous.
Why? Because it doesn't even make a phone call without crashing (normally
works 2nd or maybe 3rd, on a bad day 4th, you have to wait for it to
restart and refind the network after every failed attempt). It wont
send or recieve a txt without crashing. I had always assossiated Panasonic
with quality electrical products, this one is dreadfull! I've contacted
Panasonic, only to find that they've totally ignored my emails. I'm
a professional who relies on my phone, I now have to go and buy one
that works, maybe I can get a cheap old Nokia that'll actually make
calls and texts. The camera works, but my digital camera takes better
photo's and for the communication abilities of the phone, I'm better
off carrying the camera around and chucking this waste of space phone
in the bin. BTW disabling power off time doesn't make any difference.

All the good reviews seem to be from kids who think it looks nice. For
the business user this phone sucks. Having always used Nokia I assumed
all phone software was written by programmers rather than the infinite
collection of monkeys responsible for this rubbish. Firstly I didn't
realise how fiddly it can be to have the IRDA port on the top of the
phone so you have to half open the phone to collect. Secondly the fax
in the phone only supports class 1, not 2 or 2.0, so I cant use it with
my palm pilot. Even though my old nokia 7110,6210 and 8210 supported
it along with most decent phones. Thirdly how anyone can describe the
Panasonic software as good is beyond me, I bought a data lead to transfer
the pictures off the phone, but once connected you find out that you
have to individually copy and paste each photo into the received folder
because the software cant access the unchangeable photos folder! Genius!
I goes on and on but in summary the hardware looks nice enough and feels
sturdy, but the software is written by a team of simpletons and I would
never buy another panasonic phone because of it.

mostly Nokia's before this so it was a nice change, however storage
of 10 messages was a pain but I could live with it. Camera is good but
not as good as the Samsung's flip phone. But like other people on here
I was having problems phoning other numbers, the screen would display
calling but nothing was happening, this was so annoying that I'm surprised
I managed to retain my anger and kept the phone intact! Contacted Orange
my provider who sent a SIM update but no luck. So it got sent back to
Panasonic for a software update but the problem still existed, again
back it went to Panasonic who this time changed the main PCB. However
still not joy but at least you could store unlimited messages presumibly
from the software update. Would be intersting to find out which providers
people are using that are suffering from this problem. Changing to a

its to do with 3G cells and new software on the GPRS. Mine started crashing

overated - battery life is very poor. Saving phone number/s is cumbersome
and very fiddly. Menu selection is adequate but long winded to get to
the most used functions. Camera and picture quality is very good - but
be honest...how many people are actually using it! If you use the games
function a lot - using the GD87 - you won't be playing long as the battery
will give up before you do - also the majority of the games require
additional items that have to be downlaoded by sms in order to play
a decent games - In my view - one of the worst phones on the market...

Hey all. I've had the GD87 for about 6months, and its been a pretty
good phone, the pictures are good (if a little small) and its very simple
to use. The only problem i have had is the small amount of sms messages
able to be stored (the women in the store had the same phone, she said
there was a way to make it bigger, as she had done it, but couldn't
remember how, anyone know, get in contact) The second thing i dislike
is the 'camera sound' it makes a silly sound like a film is being moved
on, its silly, does anyone know how to turn it off? i've tried everything.
If you wanna contact me, or know how to solve either of the 2 proplms

my very first mobile was a panasonic, eb-gd520, but it was long ago
and i was very pleased with it as everyone had recommended either ericsson
or the ubiquitous nokia. i took my chances and chose panasonic. and
i converted immmediately to panasonic mobiles. later, i replaced it
with the excellent gd93. a superb mobile which i still use as a secondary
phone. naturally, when it came time for a camera mobile, i jumped at
the chance to have the panasonic. and i did...last year i got the gd87
and i have been using it for a year now. i have read the comments posted
here and i have a few things to say: 1) battery life is of course dependent
of what you do and how much fiddling around you do with the mobile.
if you just make calls and answer calls that last a few minutes a few
times a day, the battery is sufficient to last half of a week. if you
are texting/sms'ing and mms'ing and gprs'ing and showing off the photo
album, you are using the battery! and if you switch off the mobile on
and off throughout the day, you are again using more battery 'juice'
2) i have not had any software problems...last time i checked, there
is no 'windows' 'microsoft' evil here...! sure, at times the mobile
has frozen, but not enough to make me upset. maybe not even five times
has it 'frozen'. i really don't understand what is meant by those who
state that their gd87 has 'frozen' 3) the picture quality is by far
the best i have seen...of any comparable mobile. i haven\t seen the
new x70 nor other recent mobiles, but compared to anything that nokia
/ ericsson / motorola / siemens / samsung / alcatel has to offer, this
gd87 is really the best when it comes to having the crispest clearest
colour screen. it is really vibrant and a joy to see! the pictures are
amazing...even for the measely average 25kb size, they are darn good...sure
it's not digital camera, but it's a heck of a lot better than most of
the stuff on mobiles out there. if you can tell what the heck the picture
is about, then the job is done. i have taken some superb pix from the
gd87. 4) the polyphonic sounds are incredible...enough to choose from...loud
boisterous obnoxious to smoothing easy tones to suite your mood. the
personalized voice ringer is a sweet! record your favorite sound/voice
and viola! 5) the clamshell design is practical...it protects the excellent
color display/ the mini-lcd display is also nice and you can assign
three different colours to signify incoming calls, sms's, mms's and
so on. very nice. 6) the panasonic quality....i hate to say this but
i do believe that panasonic makes the best mobiles around. i have no
idea why nokia has this reputation of making the best when i see their
technical data and wonder why no single nokia phone has every feature
available...nokia has like a gazillion different models; all over-priced.
sure, they look good...do i care how it looks or how it works? ericsson
mobiles to my experience are finicky....my old t68 'freezes' so i can
relate to what it means to have a mobile 'freexing'. sure it's a great
mobile, i like the ericsson t68 but the panasonic gd87 is overall much
better. 7) the ONLY complaint i have with the panasonic gd87 is the
VOICE QUALITY....it's not as good as it should be. incoming calls cannot
be clearly heard....not really an 'echo' as one reviewer stated, but
more of a shallow muffled sound. not a crisp clear one. that is my only
gripe. if you're in a crowded bar, pub, or on the street, it's difficult
to hear the caller. and it's noticeably worse than the other mobiles.
panasonic, if you are reading this...please address this issue and get
your engineers to fix the voice quality. this is the no.1 priority for
a mobile, no? 8)i hate to brag about the gd87 and have just about everyone
else having it, but hey, it's a darn good mobile.

I have had a GD87 for seven months now. I have found it very frustrating
to use, encountering a lot of the problems others have mentioned. A
major gripe is poor battery life. The battery indicator only has three
bars, not five, so it's difficult to guage how charged or flat it is.
I'm not a major phone user, using it maybe 5 times a day on average,
but sometimes I end up on one bar after what I consider regular use
of a phone, when the phone started "fully charged" earlier in the day.
The case is very soft. I've only dropped the phone twice in all the
time I have had it, and the case has got some really deep scratches
as a result. I've not come across that problem before with all the phones
I have owned since 1995. The SMS memory seems to fill up really easily,
and I clean mine out fairly regularly. That's a pain though. I;ve not
had that problem with other phones either.. As an aside, as it's on
Vodafone, you can't download any new games. It's certainly not as good
as the GX10 in that respect. I've sent one MMS since I got it - either
mates don't have a compatible phone, or it won't send (network provider
issue). I've mentioned this so people check, if MMS is one of their
primary interests, that the phone will be able to reliably do what they
want on their network...don't rely on marketing hype to guide you. When
making a call, it's difficult to hear the other person often, particularly
if there's some noise in the background, such as in a busy pub, if it's
windy or by traffic. I've enjoyed the clam shell case and the polyphonic
ringtones and I have enjoyed storing camera images and then showing
people when I meet them, but all in all I feel a bit short-changed and
I'm looking to change ASAP and pass this on to a mate who's phone is
on its last legs. It's not been the performed I hoped for when I bought
it.

This 'phone is very poor. The RF is very weak and I often have little
or no signal in areas where other 'phones are fine. It gets confused
when you are roughly equidistant from two cell towers and you cannot
make outgoing calls. It reboots for no apparent reason, sometimes in
mid-call, and other times just powers itself down. People at the other
end complain about the poor sound quality and the constant echo of their
own voice (I think the output of the speaker just goes right back into
the microphone). If you attach a headset to it the line buzzes like
crazy. The address book is abysmal and some features just don't work.
On the upside, Tetris is quite fun.

I have worked in the mobile phone industry for over 5 years, and i would
just like to say what a moaning bunch of fools some of you are. People
need to understand that the more features you have on a mobile phone,
the more there is the potential to go wrong, being unable to send mms
or recieve is generally a network problem, not a handset problem, and
9/10 it's usually a user problem. I have used this handset for the past
10 months, and i haven't had a problem, i think its great. In comparison
to other phones i have v200, 3650, gx10i, they are all much of a muchness.
But you can't beat the camera quality on the gd87. The battery life
i agree isn't as good as a nokia, but everybody is different, and obviously
the more you play with it, the more quickly it will go down. So please
stop moaning and stop expecting things to work 100 % of the time, a
software crash is not the end of the world, p.c's do it all the time,
and i expect you don't go running back to pc world everytime your pc
freezes.... you expect it from time to time. Instead realise what a
sophisticated bit of kit a mobile phone is, and get over it!

camera I had. I haven't yet tried loading to pc - but on the phone itself
- v impressed. If it's the first camera phone you are looking for -
go for it - the samsung 200 doesn't even compare. I was told in the
shop you couldn't take self portraits with this one, but a small "mirror"
on the front means it's easy - just switch to camera mode, close the
phone and look into the mirror and take your pic (there's also a camera
button on the front). The timer and effects are also good. No probs
with texting (just gotta get used to using the # key to add a space
if you are used to Nokia's). You can add your own backgrounds from those
installed or make your own from pictures you take and there's a calendar,
clock, infrared, currency converter etc etc...the ONLY thing I have
found which i dislike - is the keypad itself - but you get to see that
before you buy anyway !

I have been on Nokia phones since day dot, but fed up with the constant
bugs in Nokia's software decided to go in search of another brand phone
this time. I bought the Panasonic GD87. This phone, I was told was the
best phone with the least amount of problems or bugs. On this info not
only did I buy one, but I dragged my brother and my mum both down to
the Vodafone store to get one for themselves. After having the phone
12 days I had sent about 15 Picture messages, NONE were received by
any of the phones, only 2 pics were ever seen and that was because I
had sent them to an e-mail address. Then Vodafone Live died on me so
I was unable to access the internet via the phone either....getting
very frustrated at this point, I called Customer Services who very kindly
passed me onto their Network Dept who explained that Panasonic DO NOT
guarantee that the GD87 can or will send MMS Messages to other phones
on other networks than the one you are on, and the Vodafone live problem
I was having was also a common one with this phone. Unfortunately this
didn't answer why my mum who also is on Vodafone wasn't able to get
the MMS Messages I sent her. So he delved a bit deeper and found that
her handset was also faulty in that it hadn't been programmed to receive
MMS and needed a software update. Please be reminded this is ONLY 12
DAYS AFTER PURCHASE. Luckily the gentleman reminded me that I was within
my 14 days and I had the right to exchange my phone for a new one. He,
working in the Network dept advised the Sharp GX10i as this phone had
little or no problems since it's release. Myself and my mother have
both got the Sharp GX10i and are quite impressed... MMS messages are
being received, the quality of picture is just as good and can be better
as the default setting is a medium quality picture not the high as Panasonic
did. The ringtones are great, they play louder and you can also download
Java games if you wish. This phone, if you like the little nik naks
a lso can have animated screensavers where as the Panasonic GD87 can't.
My advice,.....AVOID PANASONIC GD87 and buy a Sharp GX10i or equivalent.

Lovely to look at and enhanced I think by the scuba bodyglove case that's
available for it. A couple of small niggles - difficult to track down
details of missed calls and no easy way of backing up mobile phone book
onto sim. Camera takes decent enough photos although transferring these
to a PC without a cable is made more difficult by lack of bluetooth.
Greatest niggle is the reception on Vodafone. My previous mobile (Nokia
7650) had excellent reception at work (5 bars out of 5) and at home
a more modest 3 to 4 bars out of five which was still fine. Having now
had two Panasonic GD87s the best I've managed is three bars out of five
at work and at home it alternates between one bar and "searching for
network". As I need to be available at the end of a phone as part of
my job, having a mobile I can rely on to work at all times is essential.
This is why my GD87 will be replaced very soon. All the nice extras
are great but at the end of the day I want a phone I can speak to someo
ne on. At home on the GD87 I have more chance of making a nice photo
than a phone call!

it oozes excellent build quality. voice recording fuctions, tri band,
excellent MMS, there the plus points end. The reception is disgraceful,
its difficult to pick up a strong signal, i have full bars of my 6310i
and only 1 none or 2 on this, i keep getting cut off, sometimes the
screen goes blank, even having it replaced several times problems persist,
screen goes blank, you lose texts youre writing, it crashes too, sometimes
frequently actually your trying to make a call or send a text and the
screen hangs and you have to take battery off and restart! its still
slow, texting if done under normal input is horribly slow, T9 is faster
but still slow, the battery life is very poor using the camera for a
few minutes means you lose a battery bar straight away, you cant copy
sim to phone memory, so cant back up your sim etc, which is a pain,
and vice versa nor can you delete texts all at once, its a pain having
to delete your outbox (and inbox) continuously, screen gets scratched
easily, theres no Blue Tooth and how you sync it with a Mac? I dont
know! In conclusion, this could have been an excellent business phone,
but the niggles, the poor reception and the slow speed, the poor battery

light users may find it the best phone theyve ever used, but heavy users

i have four fones, the nokia 7250 ,sansung v200, sharp gx10 and the
gd87 the gd87 is second best after the samsung i love the gd87 it has
a superb screen great camera and polyphonics. it lacks a swivel head
camera and is a little to bulky...but it is worth at £250 on pay as
you go.my advice although this fone is great i would wait a few months
as a replacement (x70) is soon to be released it is smaller sleeker
and has a higher resolution screen. overall brilliant.

I bought this phone from the Vodaphone shop as an upgrade to my trusty
Nokia 7110 - purly to get the tri-band capability for a trip to the
US. It had all the features I wanted (clam-shell config, IR USB port
and WAP/GPRS access) for only £20 more than the cheapest tri-band on
offer. The built-in camera and polyphonic tones are not features I am
remotely interested in a pnone. Having tried to live with it for 4 months
now, I am tempted to swap my SIM card back into my old Nokia. The problem
with it is - the utterly abysmal user interface I have ever had the
misfortune to use in a complex electronic device. I frequently loose
data entering into the address book because I pressed the wrong button,
the complex menu system obstructs you dialling a choosen number unless
you are in just the right mode, and the instruction book is written
for 8-year-olds - with little or no useful technical data (eg: data
baud rates, memory capacity, picture compression levels etc). I woul
d not recommend this phone to anyone - if you want a clam-shell camera
phone, buy the Samsung - I don't now anything about it, but it can't
be any worse! What were Panasonic thinking when they designed this!

Nice phone, spoiled by poor battery. Doesn't live up to advertised 200
hours. Lucky if I get 60 or 70 when I don't even use it. Disappointed,
wouldn't recommend it.

This phone is fantastic. Great features and functions, I'm using the
phone on Orange that come with the latest software firmware (I heard
there were quite a few problems with earlier versions of firmware).
The pictures are great quality, if a little small. It's not designed
to be a digital camera for a PC so if you dont expect full size high
res pictures you won't be disappointed. The pictures are great for it's
intended use (picture messages). Great internet access with a choice
of either WAP or GPRS access. If you get yourself a connection cable
you can transfer midi music files to use as ringtones and save yourself
£3 a time for a ringtone
