O2 X4 Review
Phone rating:
Review: October 2005. Updated December 2005.
With the introduction of the O2 X4, the O2 branded line of phones has made
a big leap forward into the world of 3G. However, with the poor track record
of the O2 range (especially the hopelessly unreliable X1 and X2), we have to
wonder whether the addition of a whole new generation of technology is actually
going to work.
Physically, the X4 is strongly reminiscent of the X3
- it's a conventional-looking clamshell, with a boxy design, a flat keypad and
a large high-resolution screen. It's nothing to get excited about, and the keypad
isn't the most responsive, but it does the job. The external antenna gives a
slightly dated look. It's weight is low for a 3G phone, although it's still
quite a large clamshell.
The X4 builds on the capabilities of the X3, with much of the specification
unchanged: there's a 1.3 megapixel camera with video recording capability (at
reduced resolution), a 262k display, an MP3 player with stereo output via the
supplied headphones, and a slot for a memory card. The camera is pretty good
and the sound quality of the music player is excellent. In addition it has the
high-speed download capability that 3G enables, plus the benefit of an integrated
handsfree speaker. The display has been upgraded from the X3 to a resolution
of 176 x 220 pixels, and the memory has been increased to 10 Mbytes internal
memory, plus a 64 Mbyte memory card (Mini SD format). The memory card can be
expanded even further to allow storage of a large number of MP3 tracks or videos.
So, it's a very highly-specified phone, but let's look at what's missing. First,
there's no video calling capability, which seems like a big shame since all
of the required components are present (3G, video camera, speakerphone). Secondly,
it's only dual band (plus 3G of course), so it won't work in the States. And
thirdly, there's no Bluetooth wireless connectivity, just USB and infrared.
If you don't need any of these features, then it could be the right phone for
you, but as always with O2 we have to ask whether it will actually deliver the
goods. Well in practice, it's pretty good. There are times when the user interface
is a little slow, and sometimes video playback stalls or skips frames, but apart
from that the thing works! Text addicts might find the T9 impementation clunky
and as mentioned the keypad isn't that great, but there are no big reliability
issues with the X4. It's a good step up from the X3 and offers a very good range
of features for your money.
Features of the O2 X4 include:
- 3G video streaming & media downloads (no video calling)
- 1.3 megapixel camera with flash and digital zoom
- Video camera (176 x 144 pixels)
- Display: 262, 000 colours, 176 x 220 pixels
- External display: 4,000 colours
- MP3 player
- Stereo headset
- Handsfree speaker
- 64-voice polyphonic ringtones / MP3 player
- Java games
- Messaging: SMS, MMS
- Photo phonebook
- Memory card (64 Mbytes) plus 10 Mbytes internal memory
- WAP, GPRS class 10, high-speed internet (3G)
- Connectivity: USB, infrared
- Dual band
- Vibration alert
- Weight: 116g

I bought this phone about a year ago and have had few problems with
it. I bought this phone as it was cheap and had alot of good features
(such as MP3, video etc). - There where soon downsides - the flash on
the camera is very poor. putting mp3s on phone takes ages through the
data cable and always crashes my computer. Now, the keypad is starting
to stick - the 'back' and the 'ok' button are very difficult to press.
The worst point is... - i have no idea how to use the infared! - i go
to connections and load it, but the phone just says 'connecting' - and
it never connects, no matter how long i leave it, nowere in the manual
does it tell you how to use it - if someone is reading this and you
know how to use it, please tell me!!!

I've owned this phone now for just coming upto 11 months. For the first
7 or 8 months i absolutely adored it, but then the problems came thick
and fast. whats most annoying is that if somebody sends you a double
message it rarely sends the 2nd half, and will not allow you to look
at the first half. It takes eons of time when looking at your pictures
individually, and every now and again likes to turn itself off whilst
doing so. The final straw though has to be that last month, for no reason
at all, my phone deleted all my 400+ contacts. Overall the phones good
for the first half of my contract, but a waste of time, money, and effort
with the second. i cannot wait to get a new phone upgrade! any suggestions??

ok here goes i bought an x3 december 04 awesome fone however it soon
stopped sending media messages(but still received) so i eventually decided
to replace it with an x4. After a few hours i decided 2 stick with x3
and use x4 just to send media messages heres why - the x4 has some improvements
over x3 - bigger screen, better quality outer screen, change message
tone, more camera features and 3g however there were backward steps
which i didnt like - no tri band, no slideshow style(fading from pic
to pic), no ability to listen to mp3s while in slideshow, no editing
pics(stretching faces on x3 is awesome), while viewing images the please
wait message between each one (upto 8 seconds) is horrendous, the mp3
player jumping when opening the flip but the worst thing was the lower
video resolution and the jerky video recording (as opposed to the smoothness
of x3) so there u have it the x4 £130 and just used to send pics glad
i didnt give my x3 away just wish it sent pics but it beats t he x4
hands down.

>>>However, as I have noticed in other reviews, mine has repeatedly
deleted my entire contact list. As I had just left college the second
time it did this I was naturally devestated that I lost contact with
so many people. >>>Also, 99% of the time it doesn't let you recieve
multi page texts. >>>The predictive text is terrible too, unusable.
I first had the phone replaced 2 weeks after I first got it and stupidly
got another o2x4. My contract is up in 1 month and I honestly cannot

with it, despite being sent a new fone as the the probs with my old
02x4 couldn't be repaired. I also had problems receiving text messages
for a long time. The camera is pretty poor, and seems to get worse over
time for some reson . I haven't been able to add MP3's to my fone. The
battery can be terrible, it may be full one minute and on 1 the next.
The battery indocator often js goes white so you can't actually see
how much battery life is left in the fone. I havent been anywhere where
3G has really worked, neither has it made a difference. There are also
very few compatible games, considering the ones it comes with are poor.
I would definately NEVER buy this fone or any O2 fone again.

This phone rocks, i got it for christmas and it is the perfect phone.
the camera seems to be crystal clear outside but not so good indoors,
maybe theres settings that need adjusted or something and i just haven
worked out how to do it yet. the internet rocks, you can access google
and cool sites although the ringtones are expensive. the charger is
awkward but it does the job. the usb cable is gd but theres not alot
of memory to store mp3's an stuff unless you buy a larger memory card.before
i bought it i heard that texting was awkward but its not textin is not
a problem at all. there are a couple of games nothying special though
but hey, its a fone. my fone was bough for 130 quid and it is well worth
it. it looks the part and the external screen is handy for readin texts
and takin photos and vids. the flash doesnt do much buts it is still
a cool feature, there are some effects for the camera which are pretty
cool and u can zoom in but it loses quality big time. in the box u get
earphones, charger phone battery, instructions, a simpack and a usb
cable and disk to use with a computer to get mp3's and put ur vids and
photos on the computer. i was almost put off by some of the negative
reviews but im glad i wasnt the phone rocks. and by the way, when i
bought mine i was told that some were being brought back cuz they broke,
mine seems to be doin ok so far but i got it insured just incase, it
only cost 15 quid or somethin so i wud advise people to get it insured,

I love this phone. I bought it about 2 months ago after researching
the best phone for me online including using sites like this reading
reviews to make my mind up what would be a good phone to buy. It really
is a good phone, I dont think ive ever enjoyed/used a phone as much
in my life as I do with this one! the camera takes some pretty decent
pics, any camera phone with a mega pixel camera is better than VGA at
least! the video is fun, its great it doesnt limit you to any file length
like 30 seconds... it has a removeable memory card slot which is great,
I got a 512mb card cheap online and that works fine with it, now I've
managed to take literally 100s of photos and tens of videos on it without
it running out of memory! The MP3 feature is also great, I can sit and
listen to some songs on the bus every week with the hands free which
is included and im also impressed that the phone came with a USB cable.
Not many phones appear to come with the whole kit, hands-free, memory
card and computer cables etc. but this phone comes with it all so you
can get started right away! I find it really pretty simple to use, it
only took me a few days to learn how to do the basics like call people
and add contacts, text people and all the rest...most of it is pretty
obvious. Plus its a nice size, not so small your finger fits over 4
keys lol and not so big it gets in the way or cant fit in a pocket,
it also has a pretty cool external display and looks pretty trendy...you
can take pics of yourself with the camera using the external display
too which is kinda fun :-) So overall, ive found this phone to be really
useful and fun and I've not really had any problems with it (apart from
1 exception, which would be that its pretty slow loading pages and processing
files (photos & videos) you have to wait a while once you press the
ok button to stop recording video or to capture a photo and it sits
at a screen saying 'waiting' for a fair while...but then again you'd
expect that, its quite alot for such a small device to be expected to
do all the different multimedia files it can play/capture etc. so im
not surprised by that. It also does the same thing when you want to
browse your files like your images and video files it'll say 'waiting'
for a while before loading the screen... thats really the only downside
ive found.) Overall I'd definately recommend this to anyone wanting
a decent priced phone with a better than VGA camera and video capture
facility, or even just an easy to use modern flip phone :-) trust me,
I've found it to be great over the last couple of months and im someone
who doesnt use phones much, I think ive been converted to a mobile phone
fan lol give it a try, its really not as bad as some people make it
out to be

Ok, have used this for over 2 months now and noticed the following down
sides. 1 - when browsing pictures, it seems to take ages to get to the
next ones. 2 - when taking a photo using the flash - the flash does
not stay on, as a 'torch' (which I would have preferred), instead it
just flashes - without making any light at all on the photo. 3 - you
cannot delete the very-annoying built in ringtones! 4 - when taking
a video, the sound recorded is very low - almonst inaudable, and on
my videos, it seems to stall every second - missing out frames !!. The
upsides are still a high quality phone, and using full mp3 songs as
ringtones is great!

not true for my x4 and so they must just be faults with his handset

THIS IS THE WORST FONE I HAVE EVER HAD THE MISFORTUNE OF COMING ACCROSS.
IT SAYS IT HAS A FLASH WITH THE SUPPOSEDLEY GOOD CAMERA WELL IF YOU
ARE THINKING OF BUYING THIS PHONE DON'T IT HAS NO FLASH AND DA CAMERA
IS AS BAD AS EASTENDERS. THE COLOUR SCREEN WOULD BE BETTER OFF WITH
NO COLOUR CUS IT GOES ALL BLURY AND THE LETTERS IN TEXTING ARE TOOOOOOO
BIIIIIIIIIG! THE PHONES GAMES, I HAVE TO ADMIT ARE QUITE GOOD AND FUN
BUT COULD DO WITH A BIT OF A QUALITY UPGRADE. THE MP3 PLAYER IS NOT
AS GOOD AS THE O2X3 BUT HAS ALLRIGHT QUALITY, WHEREAS THE POLY RINGTONES
HAVE TERRIBLE QUALITY AND SOUND LIKE SOMEONE IS CRINKLING A PLASTIC
BAG WHEN THEY ARE PLAYING. THE REAL SOUND RINGTONES ARE JUST AS GOOD
AS THE MP3. I RECOMEND YOU THAT YOU DO NOT WANT TO BUY THIS FONE, BUY
THE O2X3 INSTEAD IT LOOKS BETTER AND IS BETTER.

Husband and I just bought this phone each last week after reading all
the reviews on this site and others and have to say it is a fantastic
phone. My old phone was 8 years old and only called people, nothing
else, so I knew nothing about phones like this one. It is extremely
easy to use and has everything you could possibly need for commuters
like us, especially the O2 Active service. We are now able to keep up
to date with news, sport and entertainment on our journey to and from
work on a normally long and boring journey. The camera is excellent
quality in a phone at this price. Bought in O2 shop and got £20.00 of
credit for free as well!! Excellent!! We have found no problems with
this phone at all and recommend it to anyone who wants a cheaper phone
with a decent camera and is very user friendly. Learnt how to use the
phone within a couple of hours. Easy! Can't live without it. Buy it
now, but be fast as they are selling fast throughout the UK, especially
in the South of England

Its easy to put mp3 files onto the phone, firstly its easier if you
have a mini sd card in the phone, then just attach the phone-to-pc connection
lead (usb), and the phone gives you the option to sychronise or use
as a 'card reader'. Select the card reader option, then you can open
the phones memory card on your pc and it comes up as a removable disk.
Then just drap and drop (if you have a brand new card in, you need to
create a 'music' directory on it though first !!). Hope this helps,
and the phone is brilliant (ps, try this web site for 100% free mp3
ringtones : http://www.motomail.co.uk/uploaded-ringtones.php happy ringing

I think that the o2 x4 is nang because it is 4x times faster than o2
active this is because it is 3g compatable. another good reason is because
it has 1.3 megapixel and has a mp3 infared and bluetooth.

When I saw my friend had the 02 x3, i was slightly jealous as I had
the x2, which at the time I was pleased with. However it didnt have
video on and I really like recording things to show off to my friends
with. But when I saw the X4 was released I had to have it. When it arrived
I straight away clicked on the camera button to video something and
the quality was brilliant for a mobile. The still photos that you can
take are immense and can measure up to some digital cameras due to the
1.3 megapixels intergrated into it. The menu is simple to use and the
mp3s sound good enough through the loudspeaker, although I have a creative
zen touch for music. The phone is also 3g enabled, with good battery
life, maybe 4 days with average use of features. The games aren't impressive
really, but you can download some if you really want and the mp3s can
be set as ringtones, so no need to buy any. Overall I love this phone,
and I think it has a better camera than the samsung d500, as my friend
has one and the outside photos are poor.

Got this for my birthday this monday, from my beautiful wife !, Good
Points : 262k internal, 62k external screens, memory card, 1.3mp camera,
mp3 ringtones, can use phone with pc lead as either a synchroniser or
removable disk, can read text with flip closed, can start mp3 playback
and close flip - still works. Bad Points : when taking video - screen
jumps every second (very annoying!), not many games to download, 3G
services do not work (I am on pay as you go), not much 'user' settings,
cannot change dedicated key options. Overall - my first flip phone -
and am very pleased with it !!

Fantastic phone for the money (£129 from the O2 shop with £20 airtime
thrown in!). Plus Points: Expandable memory (a 64MB Mini-SD card is
thrown in plus the internal 10MB Memory), 1.3 MegaPixel Camera, Video
Camera (though the picture is rather small!), MP3 player which can be
played out loud or through the headphones (supplied), MP3s as Ring Tones,
3G access (which is just sooo fast) the list goes on and on...! If you
plug the USB (supplied!) cable into your PC then it will also charge
your phone. Bad Points: Not very customisable if you don't like O2 colour
scheme then your're a bit stuck! The text input is a bit limited (e.g.
you can't seem to control capitals). The joint USB/Headphones socket
can get a bit confused and think you've got headphones when it is USB
and vice versa. The USB connection is great but if you are using the
phone as a Card Reader you can't do anything else with it. It doesn't
seem to have many games available for it - most categories on the O2
Games Arcade come back with "there are no games compatible with your
phone", though you can get Tetris :) Overall though, I like it and it
is far better than my Nokia 7250i which it replaces. It may not be as
customisable as other phones but for what it does and the cost it is
amazing - and you never need to buy a ring tone instead just download
an MP3 and use it as the ring tone!

it has all that you need! and i got it in the 02 shop for only £110!!..
it has a great mp3 player that can be played out oud or with headphones,
and they can also be set as ringtones! the camera is obviously not up
to real camera standard, but on the high quality settings is awesome
for a phone! the video is also cool and with the mini sd card (which
come with it) you can record for as long as you want! if you want picture

Difficult to find fault with this phone at all really. Camera's great,
MP3 players great & for a 3G phone battery lifes pretty good too. Its
size isn't bad either as most 3G flip phones are bigger & chunkier than
this one. In fact the only fault I can find is the lack of a speed dial
function meaning I have to always go into my phone book to make calls.
Excellent overall though.
