Nokia N72 Review
Review: September 2006. Updated April 2008.
The Nokia N72 is an updated version of the Nokia
N70, but without the 3G functionality. Although available in a choice
of black or pink, it's not really one for the girls, being typically
SmartPhone-sized and weighing in at 124g. [Editor's note: we've received
a complaint about this sentence, telling us that it's sexist. We'd like
to apologise if we've offended anyone. However, the fact that the N72
is available in pink tells us that Nokia's marketing people were targeting
women. We're not suggesting that women should buy pink phones (in fact
we think they look stupid, but let's not start another argument.) Statistically,
smartphones are more likely to be bought by men, and in our experience,
women prefer smaller phones. We were just trying to be helpful, not
sexist, but obviously we made some sexist assumptions. We're sorry if
our sexist assumptions caused offence, but we stand by our statement.]
Slightly slimmer than the Nokia N70, and better looking too, it has
a slightly improved keypad, and seems to have had more thought put into
its physical design.
The camera is a very good CMOS-based 2 megapixel camera with a zoom
and flash, giving good results. Video capture is also very good, with
a high resolution and good frame rate. The 262k colour TFT display is
excellent too and does justice to the photography and multimedia aspects
of the device.
The music player is very good too. Software is provided for easy transfer
of music from PC to phone and the 128 Mbyte memory card is expandable,
so there's plenty of storage available for music tracks. Visual Radio
is also supported. However, audio quality through the speakerphone and
headphones is not as good as expected.
The N72 has a wide range of connectivity options. Support for Bluetooth
2.0 and USB 2.0 is included. A good web browser application is built
into the phone, and there is full email support, including an attachment
viewer for viewing MS Office documents.
Functionally, the N72 is almost the same as the N70, but without 3G
support. It's a nicer design in many ways, with an improved keypad (but
still small). The user interface is a little faster too (but still slow),
so if you won't miss 3G, the N72 could be a better option. As with all
the other Nseries phones, there are software glitches and the phone
isn't recommended unless you really need the smartphone functionality.
The N72 is now no longer in production, but the new Nokia
N96 is due to be launched in the second half of 2008.
Features of the Nokia N72 include:
- Series 60 Symbian SmartPhone
- 2 megapixel camera with CMOS sensor, 20x digital zoom and flash
- Video capture: 352 x 288 pixels at up to 15 frames per second (MPEG4
format), 4x digital zoom
- Photo & video editors
- Display: TFT, 262,144 colours, 176 x 208 pixels
- Digital music player (supports MP3, AAC, eAAC & eAAC+ formats) with
- Stereo FM radio with Visual Radio support
- Messaging: SMS, MMS, email (SMTP, IMAP4 &
POP3) with support for attachments
- Speaker Independent Voice dialing and commands
- Push to Talk
- Java & Symbian applications
- Advanced contacts database
- XHTML web browser WAP, EGPRS Class 10 (236.8 kbps)
- Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0
- Memory: 20 Mbytes plus 128 MB Reduced Size MMC card
- Size: 109 x 53 x 22 mm
- Weight: 124g
- Talktime: 215 minutes
- Battery standby: 260 hours
- Music playback: 10 hours in offline mode

I have now owned this phone for 4 months. It is the best phone I have
ever had. I listen to the radio for news, take photos, take and watch
video, listen to music and read all my newspapers over the internet.
The key pads though not very good but with time, I got used to them.
Recording time is very short but you can always download a software
with a longer recording time. The built in web browser is not very convenient
for manipulation but with this phone, you can get the best internet
experience when you download and install the mini opera browser. Do
not use the Opera browser that comes already installed as it is slow
and GPRS COST IS HIGH. Battery life with full use, lasts almost a day,
so overnight charging is required. Avoid too many programmes running
in the background as this has an adverse effect on the battery and speed
of the device. I also discovered that if you set the antivirus on, it
greatly lowers the device interface speed. I have had very few cases
of crashi ng as it is commonly reported with the N70. What you do is
be slow with your phone. Dont press too many things when phone is processing
data. For proper security of the key pads, enable the autokey lock function
than manually locking the phone. I hope to say more latter thanks and

My N72 is a very good phone with excellent user friendly features. The
only defect, which I find to be very irritating is that the signal occasionally
tend to get lost during phone calls. The screen would suddenly turn
blank (white color) and after about one minute, the screen would become
normal but the signal bar is shows no signal. Normal service is attained
after switching off and restarting the phone. Otherwise the reception
is extremely clear.

Waiting to buy a cell for 3 years. Looked out for many models in Nokia
and Sony Ericson. Nokia N-72 is love at first sight. Brought it on Diwali
day. Excellent features like 2 megapixel camera, good music player and
visual radio (not useful in India though). What attracted me towards
it was it looks and it performance. A must have cell phone. The reason
for 4 stars is its key pad too small for messaging and music player
without equalizer . Hope Nokia brings out this model with a easy to
use keys for messaging. Good battery last for 4 days after charging.
I am yet in my initial stages of discovering some new facts out of it.
Patience has really clicked for me as my decision to buy this cell phone

Captivating Features: 1.Its sleek size is attractive and the glossy
black colour is simply awesome. 2.With its 2MP camera,it can compete
with other higher end models. 3.Music player is fantastic that too when
used with its head phone. 4.Ability to download documents(ppts, word)
is really helpful for tech-savvys. 5.Its sufficiently big screen has
good colour display and clarity while playing videos, taking pictures
or while browsing the net. Drawbacks: 1.The processing is pretty slow
while trying to open the gallery or while accessing the mp3 player.
2.It has the problem of registering calls log when switched to vibration
mode. 3.The earphone output is really a black mark in this tech. 4.Absence
of feature like creating a new folder is a negative surprise. 5.Though
it has a radio facility, its reception is not upto the mark.

Very disappointing overall, given the rave reviews it has received.
Functionality is extremely cumbersome - you need to navigate through
many menus to achieve even simple tasks. The keypad is very small making
message writing very difficult. You can edit the file structure in file
manager, but this does not automatically translate to the gallery. There
are no short cuts to view photo albums, and you cannot create one yourself.
The flash is absolutely useless, picture quality is very poor at night
or inside. Camera is also very slow. You cannot record sound only in
the video recorder - the sound only recorded is very low quality and
automatically cuts after 1 minute. The list of seemingly obvious things
that this phone cannot do (or it is very difficult to work out how to
do) is endless. I bought Nokia because functionality is generally very
user- not so in this case!

I go the mobile a month back. Apart from a few points the phone is awesome.
1. The Sliding cover for the camera is hanging loose and opens just
by the touch. 2. Handsfree is useless for this mobile. the voice output
in the handsfree is worst. U can hear MP3 songs very well but not the
voice calls. 3. Keypad is very small.

n72 is something between n series and 60's series the only one in the
n series that don't have a fornt camera but still a 2 mega camera ,
radio , music player , and it have a cool look with sexy pink or classic
black , also it is easy to find application for n72 as it takes the
same appilacation for series 60 2nd edition like 3230 and 7610 , up
to 1 gb , i could say it is a great mp3 player , and i think is better
in n70 in things but the absence of 3G is not cool

Ravi, mate you need to have a look at the manual before you write a
review berating a phones lack of features. For a start you can save
messages. Hence the "Drafts" folder. And also changing the format of
your contacts is pretty simple too. This is one of the best phones on
the market just now. Had it a week now, and not found a single flaw
with it yet.

Where to begin with the superlatives of this phone ? The look just screams
class in a nice retro-y kind of way. Packed full of functions, and for
once a Symbian based phone that doesn't take 3 minutes between each
button press to do anything. Battery life is fantastic, as is the camera
and sound quality. All in all a great successor to the N70. How it's
so light for what is crammed in I will never know. Brilliant !

Its a good phone however few things are not acceptable. 1) In contacts
if i select the option of FIRST NAME FIRST, it doesnt work ! it is always
last name first. 2) You can not insert number or name from your phone
directory into a message ! 3)You can not edit & save message !

I bought nokia N72 yesterday, its very nice sexy in pink, but the keypad
so small, quite difficult to write a message. And also the back is not
particulary good, coz the shape is curv (not neat). And I cant put my
picture as wallpaper with full screen, not like the nokia 6280.The camera
is fantactic and video as well.
