Nokia N70 review

 Review: October 2005

Last updated November 2008

Rating: 2 stars

In a nutshell: The Nokia N70 is the first of the Nokia Nseries smartphones to be released in the UK.

Best buy: Nokia N70 from Amazon Marketplace UK (£299.00)

The N70 is a 3G smartphone, similar to the popular and successful 6680, but with upgraded features.

Physically the N70 is similar in appearance to the Nokia 6680, with a conventional boxy shape and a functional (but small) keypad with a five-way scroll key, two soft keys, an application key, and a multimedia key. The N70 is slightly thicker than the 6680, but lighter. The screen is a good size and the two cameras are well located. Overall, it's a good, practical design for a smartphone, and the most traditional-looking of the Nseries phones. The surface does scratch however, so take good care of it.

The N70 is a powerful imaging device with a high quality camera with 2 megapixels. This is the first Nokia phone to break the 2 megapixel barrier. The camera has a very powerful 20x digital zoom, an integrated flash and a choice of modes including scenery, portrait, night and sports. It's possible to control settings such as brightness, white balance settings and colour tones. The camera, whilst good, isn't as good as the 2 megapixel camera on the Sony Ericsson K750i or W900i. There's a dedicated camera button and a protective slide. Nokia XpressPrint enables you to print photos directly to a PictBridge-compliant printer. Video recording is also possible (but not at the 2 megapixel resolution). A Movie Director application is supplied for editing videos.

The N70 has the full range of 3G capabilities, including video calling, video downloads and video/music streaming. A second VGA resolution camera is used for making video calls. Data transfer via 3G is very fast, opening up the possibility of media streaming and music or video downloads. The display on the N70 is very good with 262k colours and a bright active matrix display. It's a great multimedia device.

The RealPlayer media player supports video playback in MPEG4 format, plus audio in a choice of formats including MP3, AAC, Real Audio, WAV and Nokia Ring Tones. The Visual Radio lets you listen to songs from radio stations, with information about the song and artist. A stereo headset is supplied as part of the sales package.

The internal memory of the device is 30 Mbytes, with the addition of a 64 Mbyte MMC card which can be hot-swapped. Connectivity is via Bluetooth or USB.

The N70 takes the 6680 and adds a few more features such as the enhanced camera. In so many ways it's an outstanding phone, but there are several things that let it down. First of all, the effect of adding in all these features has made the user interface very slow. It's not an easy phone to use, takes a long time to boot up, and does have a tendency to freeze or shut down. The camera isn't as good as you'd expect from a 2 megapixel device and the screen isn't as good as you'd expect from its specification. The keypad isn't easy to use if you have large fingers and the overall build quality of the N70 doesn't seem to be that great. In particular the sliding camera cover always seems to be about to fall off. Don't assume that the N70 is actually any better than the 6680 that it replaced. The new N73 upgrades the N70 significantly and is a better phone.

Nokia N70 features include:

  • 2 megapixel camera (1600 x 1200 pixels) with 20x digital zoom and flash
  • Video recorder
  • Second VGA camera (640 x 480 pixels ) with 2x digital zoom for video calling

Most probably that's not the phone's fault, you just need to buy a new battery, as the battery has a limited lifecycle. Change the battery and your problem is gone.

Nokia N70.... I bought it in 2007.. since then i am using this fone... still its in my hand.. I love this fone so much that still today I never thought about purchasing new fone.. Its feature is now relatively old but still there is no essential work which I can not perform... specially I like its video call feature on 3G... every feature is perfect. I dont have any problem even exploiting it for 6 years... :)

i have had N70 for close to two yrs...moved on to motorola (L7) and sony (C702, C902) for sometime in between, but bak to good old nokia :) basic gist of my takeo n N70 is that its not an exceptional fone, nor were there any claims in this direction ever..u cannot expect much out of a fone in this price range (when i had purchased it loooong bak, it used to be 17K, now its available under 10). what u can however expect from it, as in any nokia, is quality product. i recently dropped my fone from my balcony, and it fell 4 floors down, onto hard concrete. the body of the fone still bears scars from that nasty accident, and everything had come out (believe u me...even the sim card had popped out and gone hiding in a shady place), but once i put it bak together, it worked like new. even the cam...which is the most sensitive piece of component on the fone...didnt go blind! all in all, apart from some glitches in the design, the fones over all good. ps: those of you who feel the menu and apps are too slow, trying upgrading the f/w to 5.07.xxx( i recenty moved on to 5.0705.3.0.1 and the menu opens in milliseconds!)

The phone was a bit slow (don't know bout others) and freezes in some occasions.Almost all Symbian & java games are playable with full speed and a wide range of applications are available. The sound quality is better. A good phone to try.

The video clarity is good better that sony ericsson k 750 n 5310 and all. Its easy to use. There's nothin to worry abt the keypad, once you get used to it, its gonna be really simple. It supports lots of softwares. I've been using it for 2 yrs. I simply love it.

Belated review of this phone as I believe it can still be found new, I expect a number of things from my phones, like every phone user text and calls are essential, and this phone delivers in spades. I expect a decent camera for those precious moments with your mates again, this phone does the job with ease being 2mpixel which even today is good for a Nokia phone. Being a Nokia it is easy to use if you have owned one before, as I had come from the N-Gage I knew my way around this fella. So this brings me to the bad points; a minor being Mini MMC - nobody even used MMC when it was current so this makes the phone less futureproof then that of a phone using say SD cards, the second I found with my model and the hardest pill to swallow considering I do love the phone is the poor battery life, I have found that it last 9 hours max and thats with all basic functions used with haste. Sometimes I've had to turn the phone off on nights out just so I can get some extra runtime from its skinflint battery and this is even with a brand new battery I b ought when I took ownership of the handset. Shame.

I am not a religious man. so imagine my suprise when I didcovered that the devil exists and is designing phones for nokia. There is nothing about this phone that is not pure evil. Its only impressive feature is that if you have one long enough it will develope sentience. Unfortunatly it will then decide to rebel against its user. When its not switching itself off or freezing, its refusing to take photos or unlocking itself in your pocket and ringing people independantly. This latest function proves to be an interesting insight into vindictiveness as it seems to be aware of who in my phonebook are exgirlfriends and when to ring them so to make me appear as a sex pest. I have begrudgingly suffered with this damned thing for two years, eternally pushing it up a hill. I am soon to be free of its evil and will never again get a nokia phone. I encourage everyone else to avoid nokia aswell. REMEMBER, the devil works for nokia. Not even the cool devil that likes rock music and scares christians, but the devil that makes mobile phones so riddled with problems that were it a pet you'd put it in a burlap sack and throw it in a canal. How do you get minus stars on this thing?

I've had this phone about 2 years now & am still pleased with it. No permanent problems (froze maybe twice in 2 years, removing & replacing battery sorted that). Love the computerised voice tags, very useful if you're in the car on hands free & need to call someone, you don't need to have previously recorded a voice tag, the phone does it for you & is very good at recognising them. Only quibbles, camera slide is a bit loose & the phone doesn't lock automatically. Also wish I'd bought a cover as it's got fairly scratched. Liked the design when it was new but I am now looking at the 6500 slide which is beautiful (although usability reviews aren't good). My wife is looking forward to receiving my N70 as soon as I get a new phone!

I'm using this from last 9 months feeling on difficulty in typing... Else my typing speed is pretty good on this mobile. Because this is a symbian operated device so many wonderful softwares are available to make it master. You must not open many applications collectively or more than 3 it'll effect. It plays most of audio formats available currently. I'll suggest to buy this. But if you ready to pay some more than buy N73M because this is improved version of this. Just rock ...3S...

Dear reader, You see many people here made complain against Nokia N70. As i am a N70 user let me discuss about it. >> You know a taxi driver cant fly a aeroplane. If he tries, he might crash with it. Same goes to the Symbian phones like N70. If a normal, unprofessional, java based mobile user uses a N70, it will make great troubles for him as he will be unable to handle it at all. And moreover symbian phones are not that easy to use.So, If you regret N70 actually you dont know it at all. >> With a symbian phone like N70 you have the freedom of installing most of applications and games released till now. Because it supports java and also the ".SIS" format of symbian. >> You cant replace a Multimedia computer with an ordinary java mobile.A user said that the camera of N70 is bad,but dear,do you know that you can edit a photo in that way which your desktop computer does. You can edit your video too and even seperate the sound with it!!! >>There are some applications which are must for N70.Such as : Norton Antivirus,Fs caller,Yahoo go,gmail,Power dictaphone, winamp, flash light, opera, netfront, opera mini,Handy taskman, app man, smart guard, alarm manager,Gmaps,Nokia maps, photo fix, power lock, smart movie, face warp, flash player, zipman, quick office,PDF viewer etc.Who doesnt know about them they will regret N70 without knowing about them at all. >>N70 is N70, in the term of multitasking. You can open lots of apps together till your RAM is filled.I use 13 mig33 application and music player at the same time. >>The music player supports ALBUM ART and ID TAGS and music via stereo headset HS-23 is loud and clear. And in the music library, u can use the search feature to search a song as quick as finding your contacts. >>When you use Opera 8.65 or Netfront 3.3 symbian browser, you will be amazed using them, you will feel like you are browsing from your PC. Dear non-symbian users, can you browse web (not wap) pages with your mobile??? >>the speed of internet is unique. Sometime it is so fast with edge connection, you will feel like using a 3G connection. This Phone also has 3G and video calling/streaming feature. >> This phone does slow down while writing a long text, i.E. I am giving this review with my N70 and its as fast as the begining time. >>you can even change resolution of photos to save space after copying them to pc. SO, PLEASE MAKE COMMENT OF N70 after knowing its unique abilities. # Nahid Anwar # BANGLADESH.

had this fone 4 a few months but 2 other ppl had it b4 me. They neva had ne problems with it although i hav had a few. It is slow and freezes every now and thn. Iv had problems charging it with a number of different chargers. I hav just gone bak to my old fone as it stopped letting me send txts although it had the correct msg centre number. These problems may b due to it being quite old so otherwise i would say it is a good fone with a good camera and as long as u hav a gd memory card is gr8 4 most other things.

I had this phone on an Orange contract, and it is easily the worst phone I have ever owned! Keypad lights not working, internet crashing, rubbish build quality and sooo slow, nearly 45 seconds from turn on to ready to use!! I've never had a Nokia since and will never ever get another N Series phone. Be warned!!!

I agree with all the fans of the Nokia N70. The phone's just up there looking down on all of them sonyericcsons and samsungs. If you wanna get the best outta ur N70, just log on to www.getjar.com and pimp ur phone 4 freeee. You'd be surprised at the features the N70 can also work with. Log on to the site and enjoy the Nseries baby.

Basically, after having to upgrade from my D600, after it being outdated (and dropping it down the toilet) i bought the N70 today. I'm suprised by how much i like it already. Although i fear it may be too complicated for a few older buyers (No offence). Overall, the only thing that lets it down is the lagging.

What I still cannot stand is why no phone allows me to set it to "meeting" profile when I have a meeting defined in my calendar. I asked for this functionality in 1998 from a sales person and he was like "maybe it's available in some expensive business phones". That, and the fact I cannot set my appointments *vibrate*, are the only gripes so far for N70. After dragging Communicator 9500 almost 3 years, this phone is a relief. In my use it's fast enough (much faster phone book with 400+ entries than in 9500 (with 400+ entries)) and scratch-free.

I had an N70 and got a E900 on upgrade - had it a month and threw it away doesn't compare to N70!! I love this phone, the keypad light is a bit annoying but doesn't really matter unless your locked in a dark room!! picture quality is great!! only problem I had is now it's getting a bit old it won't charge but that may be a dodgy charger..

Well I must say this phone is amazing. I have had it for a year now && must admit that the camera quality is really good. It also has good speakers, the sound quality is high and when I put the earphones in the bass is really good. I like the way it looks but it's far too heavy. I don't like the plastic cover over the memory card slot it keeps breaking so I have to keep buying new phone covers. I also have been having problems with this phone such as the phone turning itself on and off and at times I coulden't even enter the menu without it freezing, it could be the fact that I use it too much but to be honest looking at everyone's review it seems that this phone has a software problem. My N70 died a few weeks ago the battery has completely messed up and when I turn it on it freezes and says low battery and turns itself off...I have tried charging it but it doesn't charge properly. I am hoping to get it fixed tomorrow, I can't face losing this phone it's been the be st I have ever had but sometimes you need to move on.

Iam using Nokia N70 phone, the phone is quiet good, but some times whole mobile is getting strucked, due to this i can't operate my mobile(even switch off button also won't work), what i have to do is i have to disconnect the battery once from mobile and have to reconnect it again, then i have to switch on mobile, then it'll work. Any one is having the similar problem? Anyone knows what is the solution for this?
