Nokia 8310 review

 Review: October 2002

Rating: 2 stars

In a nutshell: The Nokia 8310 replaces the very popular 8210.

Today's best buy: Nokia 3310 (2017) from AO.com (£49.00)

Review

The Nokia 8310 features a more modern stylish look, WAP (GPRS), and the benefit of an integrated FM radio with headset. The infra-red modem enables the Nokia 8310 to easily interface with a laptop for example. The re-modelled facia makes the buttons easier to use than the 8210 which it replaced, and of course the phone looks more modern than the older 8210. It's actually even smaller than the 8210, although a touch heavier. Reliability problems and the fact that this phone is well past its sell-by date in terms of features make this a poor choice nowadays.

Got mine new in 2001, love it, great little classy looking phone. Small but solid and easy to use. I only need a red button & green button and to sms occasionally, don't need to browse the net or email etc, no pictures either, just a phone. Simple is best. Will keep it for long time yet, not wasting money replacing it when it's doing the job well. Can still buy Genuine Nokia original covers for them in both "Dark" & "Hot" color from England on Ebay. Generic covers and keypads are rubbish though. On/off button can fail on some 8310 but once fixed (cost $20) good for ever. Overall very happy with mine, you can buy them for p'nuts on Ebay from China but the keypad has Chinese signs as well as English. Hope that helps ya, cheers.

I love this little phone. I am 14 and break everything, but the only thing that breaks beyond repair is the case! My brothers had this phone before me, and I found this phone had a brined on/off button, so I bought a new one, and good to go! Whoever said this phone is flimsy, then the phones today are paper :L I chucked this phone outta the bus window abd it was still working fine, shame the same can't be said for my lg shine and nokia 5310. Yes those phones have Bluetooth, which I never use, hold songs(I have an iPod touch) and have a rubbish camera, which takes the worst pics ever, but they do not last, and are nowhere near as durable, and cost 10x the price.

Absolutely love this phone. I think it was the third or fourth phone that i owned and it has lasted me for at least 5 years. Although i have owned other phones...Ericsson K800i, Nokia N92, N95 among others, this phone has always proved to be the most reliable. It was the back up phone for my flatmates at uni when theirs inevitably broke down and has saved me on many occasions when i have been let down by others. Yes it's basic; has a 160 character capacity when writing txt messages, a black and white screen and monophonic ringtones, but; its a mobile that you can ring someone on and it goes ring ring! what more do you want from a small phone? Too many phones now do too many things. We all have a computer, and a phone line for internet, and a digital camera, so why spend more money on a phone that does the job of these? Are we really that desperate to check our facebook and listen to music out loud? It an absolutely brilliant phone that has never let me down. It is beginning to show its age now, switching off often when knocked even a little bit, and asking for the sim card on occasion when it is in, but switch it off and on again a voila..working again. No frills=nothing to go wrong. BEST PHONE IN THE WORLD BAR NONE!!

Stand out from the crowd with bleepy, syncopated monophonic ringtones and impress your friends with an exciting array of pixellated games. This phone may be outdated, but nowadays it is a personality statement. It says "I'm not a hedonistic, shallow loser spending unnecessarily on obnoxious and ugly Sony Ericsson music-bling-devices--I've had the same faithful Nokia for years. Yeah, check out the snowboarding game" I would recommend it. Oh yes.

I Had my 8310 for about 2 years. It died after about 6 months so had to get it repaired. When i replaced this with a Sony Ericsson T610 i gave this to my brother and i believe it is still running to this day. It was an ok phone, the Xpress covers were a bit rubbish and needed replacing after 12 months of ownership. The only downside was that the SMS message was limited to 1 at a time so only a max of 168 characters per text message! Rubbish.

Anyway, I just wanted to say, as 'retro' is the buzz word in tech these days why dont Nokia bring this phone back with modern software and a camera!!?? Its a gorg looking phone, a great pocket size and would sell buckets. Likewise the 'matrix phone' from 1999 and even the 8210 which was smaller as I recall. Better designs than a lot of the tosh on the market today.

I love this mobile, it's really simple to use, has a long battery life and I don't need anything other than to make calls, texts and store messages or info - the alarm clock has proved immensely useful and it's very efficient. Newer models are really confusing and I have a busy lifestyle, so don't have the time to work out how to access different features. Why over-complicate things? The 8310 mobile is also beautifully small.

Well, I've had this phone for four years now, and it has worked almost flawlessly throughout that time. Like any micro-processor device, it has gone mad on the odd time and I have had to reset it by taking out the battery for ten minutes. The radio is a great feature, and I listen to it about 8 hours a day while I'm going about. I love that feature. The battery lasted for well over two years and I replaced it as it gradually lost its power. I charge it every night over the time I'm sleeping because my radio listening drains it down I made sure to buy an ORIGINAL battery on ebay because some really cheap ones won't last. I've never had any of the failures that others report here. The covers have been replaced frequently, because I'm always dropping the damned thing and it usually goes bouncing down the pavement about once a week. Cracked cover, or too scratched up? No problem - buy a new cover on ebay for a fiver. I feel I'll really be sorry to change this phone, and even though have a really fancy MDA Pro computer phone, I use the manky old Nokia because it's so straight forward.

The only rare problem is sometimes it "jams" and becomes unresponsive, which requires pulling the battery out and sticking it back in. It looks a mess compared to a modern phone, but it gets the job done. value = 5 stars. features (by todays standards) = 1 star.

The simple fact that I'm writing this review 3 years after the last one shows just how long this phone can last! The reliability and sturdyness of this phone far exceeds any of the new models. No, it doesn't have a camera or bluetooth or mp3 capability, but if all you're after is a phone than calls, texts and will last forever, get the 8310. It's tiny, easy to fit in the smallest pocket, clear screen, good radio, all the basic functions that the original phones had... Mine's been dropped drunkenly on the floor at least 20 times, has been in the bath, and had ink spilt on it, and the only problem I've ever had is occasionally the screen will go blank after I send a text. It recovers within 10secs and always manages to send the text before it dies so I haven't found this to be a real problem. And to be fair, it's been going strong for over 5 years. I would recommend this phone to anybody who is looking for a phone instead of a computer, mp3 player or camera.

EVENTHOUGH THE INBOX OPENS LATE, THE PHONE HAVE A VERY GOOD FEAUTERS AS THE PHONE IS SMALL AND COMPACT. IT IS ALSO EASY TO DOWNLOAD SOMETHING AS IT HAVE INFRARED DEVICE. Hey. I am 18 now and had this Nokia 8310 for the past 5 years and it simply does the job. I was overwhelmed by the size because it was the smallest one that was around at that time and the most modern, and even today it looks good alongside with the newer mobile phones that are out today. I would recommend this phone to people who just want a simple for for the day to day uses of just making calls and texting The phone has some good features such as games and FM radio that can however only be listened to via the special headset that you get with the phone in the box or you should get in th box. The phone was a WAP feature which although i never used due to the costs and i personally dont think that it is much worth it for the WAP feature but overall it is a excellent phone and i never had any trouble with it, so i would defo recommend it. :-) Just one thing, the battery can ware out after a few years and it is recommended a new battery to replace it, that would cost you about a maximum of 5 Pounds.

First I must point out that I own this phone for more than 3 years now. I bought it in 2003. Hard to believe, huh? 3 years and still not replaced it with today's "better" model... and I'll tell you why. This is because today's models, ALL OF THEM, suck big time. Battery life on them is horrible, 2-3 days at most is what you'll get. This phone gets me between 7 and 9 days (!!!) of work without recharge after more than 3 years of usage (!!!) and I talk every day for about 10-15 minutes and write few SMS messages. I turn it off during the night. My father gets even more - 2 phucking weeks without recharging! (because he uses it a bit less than me). Tell me people, what is the point of having a mobile phone if you have to charge every day? You might as well buy yourself a DECT phone. Mobile phones ARE NOT MOBILE if they cant stand for at least 5 days without recharge! Now for other stuff. This phone has never failed on me. That's right, never. Never had a single restart, reboot, problem or anythingduring those 3 years. Maybe I'm lucky, I don't know, but my father had neither. Yeah, I know, no fancy stuff - camera, mp3, memory, color screen and stuff. WHO CARES?!? This phone gives me everything i need. If you need a camera, buy a camera, not a mobile phone. If you need mp3, buy a dedicated mp3 player. They will both give you MUCH better quality then those integrated junk in mobile phones. Color screen? It only sucks the battery. If i want to see images and games, I'll turn my PC on and watch my 19" color LCD screen. Mobile phones should be mobile phones - not computers. Trying to accomplish that task, all companies today have destroyed main mobile phone's purpose - mobility. Yeah, you can see color images but cant use it for more than 1-2 days and can miss an important call because of often recharging. I must admit that I won't exchange my Nokia 8310 for a different model until it dies completely. Seeing it how good it has done so far, I doubt it will happen soon.

I bought my Nokia 8310 first year at University which means I've had it for last 5 years - 5 YEARS yes you are reading correctly. Why 5 years- because it served me excellent and I never had to look for a new one- in fact I got quite attached to that little phone and didn't wanna throw it away just cuz there are phones with cameras and fancy ringtones. I never had any problems with my Nokia except low reception in some mall areas, a few voice mails got delayed a few hours but in 5 years I can only recall 2 times of that kind of a problem so overall I think it's great. True, it is a bit too small for longer talks, I could not download Polythonic Ringtones, have a screen-saver or some fancy gadgets but over-all, hearing how many people complain about their phones, mine served me great and I never even had to buy a new battery- 5 years of 600 minutes+ talk per month is not a small thing. Now it is time to move to "greener pastures" but I am sticking with Nokia- this time I am moving quite a few levels up to Nokia 6265i, but I will keep my little one somewhere in the bottom drawer :)

I suppose other than that it's fairly decent, but not being able to txt or call anyone without the risk of the phone randomly turning itself off is a pretty big drawback.

okay, first off, i got through half of the reviews and i couldnt belive the amount of c@@p i i was reading. 1) the nokia 8310 is loaded with features, if not bloated. 2) for the idiots out there complaingin about the fone being improved, if they are so smart why dont they get a job designing fones? the fones problems reflect on the idiots who use them, i know that there ARE such things as bugs, and i am able to still use my nokia with no problems. i quite like my nokia 8310, and soon am getting a 6510 as they are pretty much the same fone, only dif is he 6510 got the better screen with the blue light and more poshhhhhhh lookin cover. i am sick and tired of idiots with no actual factual info making revies, u got sum retard sayin stuff like he reckons the wap on the 8310 is fast, the 8310 has gprs. and for all those idiots out there who say not to buy it, well guess what, its one of the most common fones and it's good (for its time offcourse) and the fact of the matter is these ppl are idiotic complaining winging people with nothing better to do. il admit mine does restart, and ask for sim to be inserted but i am happy with it, GET A LIFE!!! nokia 8310 is an outstanding easy to use,m yet complex lil fone :) oh yeah, nothing is perfect and this fone is not being portrayed as being perfect!!

Ive had it for about a month and ive had no troubles. The radio is really good quality, has some pretty cool games, heaps of ringtones and its a great size for fitting in ya pocket. My only dissapointment was with the case. It feels really lose and the buttons r quite lose and im often scared that ill break it if i hold it too tightly. I`ve had my 8310 for about a year now and i like it very much, its a nice size, the smaller being the better in my book and the design is also quite good. I have a withe cover on it and with the withe light it looks stylish. As for functions it has all i need realy. The absolutely best thing about it is the radio function, perfect when travelling, running, walking, waiting for the bus etc.etc. I`ve dropped it on various sufaces and its none the worse for it, the only problem is that it tends to lose contact with the SIM card. It wont be replaced untill i find a smaller phone with radio and better design

It doesn't have ringing polyphonic ringing tones and even the maximum volume is so damn silent. compared to other phones ringing it just sounds like a an old old scratched tape. the battery is not that good as well and has to charge it more frequently than it was said in its review by Nokia.

Not a good phone. I have had 7 of them in a year. I kept bringing them back with faults and was only allowed to change for the same phone. I had many software updates and all that but nothing ever worked properly. Ringing tone got stuck on "ascending" on at least 4 of them. Callers on the other end often complained of whistling noise that I could never hear. The car kit is absolutely appalling. Sound is very bad and the volume buttons vibrate when the car is moving. I have always had nokia phones and have never had a problem. I had a 6310 with car kit which was flawless. I thought being Nokia that the 8310 would be the same, not so. Ringing volume not great, vibration not great. For one of them not to work properly was unfortunate, for 7....well it just wasnt meant to be. Bought a 6100 yesterday. Nice phone but PLEASE give us the option of NOT having polyphonic ringing.

I just wanted to say that this is such an excellent phone but with a couple of faults that hasn't been a problem with my other (a lot older) Nokia phones. I've had my phone for less than a week now, so I guess I shouldn't be judging so early, but I've always had Nokia phones so I think I adjust to them quite quickly. The Bad Points: Really quiet, weird ringtones!!! Most of the good, strong tones have been taken out and replaced with these strange new ones that sound like there is something wrong with the phone. The tones are really soft too, so if you are in a busy place, you'll probably feel it vibrating rather than the actual ring. Also, the buttons are pretty loose. I'm not sure if it's only my phone, but the buttons feel rather insecure as does the cover - it doesn't bother me as the keypad and the covers (which will cost you a little bit) are interchangeable, so it has a less solid feel compared to my older phones. The Good Points: Excellent radio, I thought that it would be really very rubbish, but when you have good reception, sound quality is crystal clear! (heh, I am SO hilariously funny. just nod and ignore me for now) It's sooo small!!!!!!! It's so cute and tiny! The games may be a bit hard to play as the buttons are so small and dainty, but text messaging and dialing isn't too bad. Which brings me to another point, Nokias have good reception always!! There are so many other features that I haven't mentioned, but are useful, (such as calender and calculator, but I've said too much so maybe it's best to stop). Overall, this is a brilliant phone and I hope it doesn't let me down like the some of the other reviews say! If you get a later version of the model (like me) software faults etc shouldn't bother you too much. It's a shame that this product have been discontinued, if it had a colour screen and a camera, this would be the BEST phone!!! Thanks for reading my review, I hope this helped! Sorry it was a bitty long :o) !! xxx

I have had this phone for 1 year. In that time, it has been replaced twice, and had its software "upgraded" twice. The ubiquitous lousy Nokia software shows itself here again, with the old familiar problems such as turning itself off during SMSs, and other inopportune times such as in your pocket. Ring tone is weak, forget hearing this in your clothing in a public place! The FM (mono) radio is great, that is if you like carrying the unwieldy headset around with you. I actually can't find one redeeming feature in this phone. I get only Nokia phones through work, and now have a comprehensive (better than your average Nokia repair agent!) list of common Nokia software issues, consistent poor quality, and general frustration.

had this phone for 17 months now so had plenty of experience of its shortcomings. It is quite a neat phone with some nice features including a radio BUT, despite a software upgrade and patch it turns itself off when it feels like and occasionally reboots when you hit the on text messages. This drives you crazy as you have to retype the whole bloody lot again. Its also pretty flimsy and gives the impression that if you drop it it'll shatter into a thousand pieces, unlike my siemens phone which was built like a 4" tank. There are plenty of better (more reliable) phones on the market so avoid buying one.

I had an 8310 but unfortunately lost it (one of the disadvantages of it being so small?). I absolutely loved it and never had the slightest problem with it. I dropped it the first day I had it but it wasn't damaged at all. For such a tiny phone it was pretty tough! The radio was brilliant, the reception terrific. I also loved the voice recorder. Texting was a doddle, as it is in all Nokia phones. No problems with voice calls either. After I lost it my husband said he would buy me a new phone with camera included so I decided to get a Panasonic GD87. It's a great phone but nowhere near as good as the 8310 for texting and doesn't have a radio. I can only store 10 text messages. The voice recorder has a much shorter time than the one in the 8310. If anyone doesn't want a camera or colour screen I would recommend the Nokia 8310 - you'll love it!

A Brilliant buy. i got this phone on contract for christmas last year and its not let me down once. i must say you need slim fingers for the tiny buttons or you'll end up pressing about 3 every time. The covers for it are really good but there quite hard to find, i got a ded nice winnie the pooh one for about a fiver. the menu is really easy to use (like all nokias)and there won't be a feature you cant use. The radio is really handy for when your bored on the bus or walking down to the shop or something, where you can preset you favourite stations. The amazing amount of text messages it can hold is gr8!!! i dont like deleting txts because there is always some really nice ones you wana keep or some funny ones, so with this phone holding about 200 messages its brilliant. However the inbox does get really slow to open which can be abit irritating when you get close to the limit. The voice tags are good for when your in a rush as you dont need to search through all your names. Th e battery life is really good, i charge mine about once every 2 weeks. NO JOKE. and i have it on constantly day and nite. The games aren't very fun but you have got bumper and snow boarding which makes a change from just snake. it holds bout 500 names, which is really good for someone that relies on there phone as an address book, an you can also assign different ringtones to different caller groups e.g. family. so you know whos calling before you even look at your phone. Its cute design looks very stylish and never takes up too much room in a handbag. But at the moment where there are phones with cameras and colour screens this doesnt seem like much competition. To be honest i think i'd want one with all the new features but if you just want a phone to do what a phone is designed for you cant go wrong with this cutie. Also the two player snake is very fun to play with a friend and the infa red option is good so you can recieve business cards and stuff without people spendin g money to send them to you. It will never let you down and even though it is quite an old phone it doesnt look it and you will still look good with this phone. I dont care about any other review, i have had this phone for a year and i know all about it ( and i am VERY picky about my phones!) and i think that it has been fab. i recommend it to anyone.

Turns out that the phone had been taken back, rebooted and sold on again. what a disgrace! So i got a new one, this time with a fully packaged battery and a sealed screen. This one turned itself off all the time though. So onto my 3rd one. This continued to do the same and i was no longer allowed my money back. I payed 30 to get it fixed when it was Nokias fault. Although the radio, size, weight and other good features - this phone dissapointed me because of its poor performance.
