Nokia 8310 Review

Phone rating:

The Nokia 8310 replaces the very popular 8210. The Nokia 8310 features a more modern stylish look, WAP (GPRS), and the benefit of an integrated FM radio with headset. The infra-red modem enables the Nokia 8310 to easily interface with a laptop for example. The re-modelled facia makes the buttons easier to use than the 8210 which it replaced, and of course the phone looks more modern than the older 8210. It's actually even smaller than the 8210, although a touch heavier. Reliability problems and the fact that this phone is well past its sell-by date in terms of features make this a poor choice nowadays.

  • WAP, GPRS
  • 5 line display
  • Voice activated dialling
  • Predictive text messaging
  • 35 ringtones plus 5 customisable ringtones

  • Changeable x-press on covers
  • Picture messaging
  • Data capability with built-in infra-red modem
  • Voice recorder (3 minutes)
  • Integrated FM radio
  • Games, clock, currency converter
  • Size: 97 x 43 x 19 mm
  • Weight: 84g
  • Battery standby: 100 - 350 hours
  • Battery talktime: 2 - 4 hours
  • Vibration alert

okay, first off, i got through half of the reviews and i couldnt belive the amount of c@@p i i was reading. 1) the nokia 8310 is loaded with features, if not bloated. 2) for the idiots out there complaingin about the fone being improved, if they are so smart why dont they get a job designing fones? the fones problems reflect on the idiots who use them, i know that there ARE such things as bugs, and i am able to still use my nokia with no problems. i quite like my nokia 8310, and soon am getting a 6510 as they are pretty much the same fone, only dif is he 6510 got the better screen with the blue light and more poshhhhhhh lookin cover. i am sick and tired of idiots with no actual factual info making revies, u got sum retard sayin stuff like he reckons the wap on the 8310 is fast, the 8310 has gprs dumbass. and for all those idiots out there who say not to buy it, well guess what, its one of the most common fones and it kicks ass (for its time offcourse) and the fact of the matter is these ppl are idiotic complaining winging people with nothing better to do. il admit mine does restart, and ask for sim to be inserted but i am happy with it, GET A LIFE!!! nokia 8310 is an outstanding easy to use,m yet complex lil fone :) oh yeah, nothing is perfect and this fone is not being portrayed as being perfect!!

My brother had this fone for about a year but found the ringing was too quiet and often missed important calls. So i swapped my 3315 for his fone and i love it. Ive had it for about a month and ive had no troubles. The radio is really good quality, has some pretty cool games, heaps of ringtones and its a great size for fitting in ya pocket. My only dissapointment was with the case. It feels really lose and the buttons r quite lose and im often scared that ill break it if i hold it too tightly. Overall its a pretty great fone and havent had any technical difficulties yet.

I`ve had my 8310 for about a year now and i like it very much, its a nice size, the smaller being the better in my book and the design is also quite good. I have a withe cover on it and with the withe light it looks stylish. As for functions it has all i need realy. The absolutely best thing about it is the radio function, perfect when travelling, running, walking, waiting for the bus etc.etc. I`ve dropped it on various sufaces and its none the worse for it, the only problem is that it tends to lose contact with the SIM card. It wont be replaced untill i find a smaller phone with radio and better design

It doesn't have ringing polyphonic ringing tones and even the maximum volume is so damn silent. compared to other phones ringing it just sounds like a an old old scratched tape. the battery is not that good as well and has to charge it more frequently than it was said in its review by Nokia.

Not a good phone. I have had 7 of them in a year. I kept bringing them back with faults and was only allowed to change for the same phone. I had many software updates and all that but nothing ever worked properly. Ringing tone got stuck on "ascending" on at least 4 of them. Callers on the other end often complained of whistling noise that I could never hear. The car kit is absolutely appalling. Sound is very bad and the volume buttons vibrate when the car is moving. I have always had nokia phones and have never had a problem. I had a 6310 with car kit which was flawless. I thought being Nokia that the 8310 would be the same, not so. Ringing volume not great, vibration not great. For one of them not to work properly was unfortunate, for 7....well it just wasnt meant to be. Bought a 6100 yesterday. Nice phone but PLEASE give us the option of NOT having polyphonic ringing.

However, this only happens once in a few months. Only problem is the fragile front cover. it's showing bursts in te transparent part at the keynummers 1 and 4. only solution would be changing the cover.

I just wanted to say that this is such an excellent phone but with a couple of faults that hasn't been a problem with my other (a lot older) Nokia phones. I've had my phone for less than a week now, so I guess I shouldn't be judging so early, but I've always had Nokia phones so I think I adjust to them quite quickly. The Bad Points: Really quiet, weird ringtones!!! Most of the good, strong tones have been taken out and replaced with these strange new ones that sound like there is something wrong with the phone. The tones are really soft too, so if you are in a busy place, you'll probably feel it vibrating rather than the actual ring. Also, the buttons are pretty loose. I'm not sure if it's only my phone, but the buttons feel rather insecure as does the cover - it doesn't bother me as the keypad and the covers (which will cost you a little bit) are interchangeable, so it has a less solid feel compared to my older phones. The Good Points: Excellent radio, I thought that it would be really very rubbish, but when you have good reception, sound quality is crystal clear! (heh, I am SO hilariously funny. just nod and ignore me for now) It's sooo small!!!!!!! It's so cute and tiny! The games may be a bit hard to play as the buttons are so small and dainty, but text messaging and dialing isn't too bad. Which brings me to another point, Nokias have good reception always!! There are so many other features that I haven't mentioned, but are useful, (such as calender and calculator, but I've said too much so maybe it's best to stop). Overall, this is a brilliant phone and I hope it doesn't let me down like the some of the other reviews say! If you get a later version of the model (like me) software faults etc shouldn't bother you too much. It's a shame that this product have been discontinued, if it had a colour screen and a camera, this would be the BEST phone!!! Thanks for reading my review, I hope this helped! Sorry it was a bitty long :o) !! xxx

had this phone for 17 months now so had plenty of experience of its shortcomings. It is quite a neat phone with some nice features including a radio BUT, despite a software upgrade and patch it turns itself off when it feels like and occasionally reboots when you hit the on text messages. This drives you crazy as you have to retype the whole bloody lot again. Its also pretty flimsy and gives the impression that if you drop it it'll shatter into a thousand pieces, unlike my siemens phone which was built like a 4" tank. There are plenty of better (more reliable) phones on the market so avoid buying one.

I have had this phone for 1 year. In that time, it has been replaced twice, and had its software "upgraded" twice. The ubiquitous lousy Nokia software shows itself here again, with the old familiar problems such as turning itself off during SMSs, and other inopportune times such as in your pocket. Ring tone is weak, forget hearing this in your clothing in a public place! The FM (mono) radio is great, that is if you like carrying the unwieldy headset around with you. I actually can't find one redeeming feature in this phone. I get only Nokia phones through work, and now have a comprehensive (better than your average Nokia repair agent!) list of common Nokia software issues, consistent poor quality, and general frustration.

I had an 8310 but unfortunately lost it (one of the disadvantages of it being so small?). I absolutely loved it and never had the slightest problem with it. I dropped it the first day I had it but it wasn't damaged at all. For such a tiny phone it was pretty tough! The radio was brilliant, the reception terrific. I also loved the voice recorder. Texting was a doddle, as it is in all Nokia phones. No problems with voice calls either. After I lost it my husband said he would buy me a new phone with camera included so I decided to get a Panasonic GD87. It's a great phone but nowhere near as good as the 8310 for texting and doesn't have a radio. I can only store 10 text messages. The voice recorder has a much shorter time than the one in the 8310. If anyone doesn't want a camera or colour screen I would recommend the Nokia 8310 - you'll love it!

A Brilliant buy. i got this phone on contract for christmas last year and its not let me down once. i must say you need slim fingers for the tiny buttons or you'll end up pressing about 3 every time. The covers for it are really good but there quite hard to find, i got a ded nice winnie the pooh one for about a fiver. the menu is really easy to use (like all nokias)and there won't be a feature you cant use. The radio is really handy for when your bored on the bus or walking down to the shop or something, where you can preset you favourite stations. The amazing amount of text messages it can hold is gr8!!! i dont like deleting txts because there is always some really nice ones you wana keep or some funny ones, so with this phone holding about 200 messages its brilliant. However the inbox does get really slow to open which can be abit irritating when you get close to the limit. The voice tags are good for when your in a rush as you dont need to search through all your names. Th e battery life is really good, i charge mine about once every 2 weeks. NO JOKE. and i have it on constantly day and nite. The games aren't very fun but you have got bumper and snow boarding which makes a change from just snake. it holds bout 500 names, which is really good for someone that relies on there phone as an address book, an you can also assign different ringtones to different caller groups e.g. family. so you know whos calling before you even look at your phone. Its cute design looks very stylish and never takes up too much room in a handbag. But at the moment where there are phones with cameras and colour screens this doesnt seem like much competition. To be honest i think i'd want one with all the new features but if you just want a phone to do what a phone is designed for you cant go wrong with this cutie. Also the two player snake is very fun to play with a friend and the infa red option is good so you can recieve business cards and stuff without people spendin g money to send them to you. It will never let you down and even though it is quite an old phone it doesnt look it and you will still look good with this phone. I dont care about any other review, i have had this phone for a year and i know all about it ( and i am VERY picky about my phones!) and i think that it has been fab. i recommend it to anyone.

Turns out that the phone had been taken back, rebooted and sold on again. what a disgrace! So i got a new one, this time with a fully packaged battery and a sealed screen. This one turned itself off all the time though. So onto my 3rd one. This continued to do the same and i was no longer allowed my money back. I payed £30 to get it fixed when it was Nokias fault. Although the radio, size, weight and other good features - this phone dissapointed me because of its poor performance. Overall i was dissapointed with this phone, and within a year i got a newer one, this time not a nokia.

I've had trouble with this phone from day one and since reading most of the other reviews seems the problems are more or less similar, so why are they still happening - surely Nokia can put these problems right by now. My phone constantly switches itself off, sometimes taking ages to turn back on, freezes in the middle of a text and cuts its self off, and when I receive a text message I also receive previous messages that have already been deleted from my inbox as well as the new message - how on earth that can happen is beyond me. My contract is up in a few months and I can hoenstly say that the 8310 has put me off Nokia phones altogether !!!

Also, while I'm mid conversation, the person on the other end sounds very faint, and sometimes vice versa. Also, occasionally, when you call someone and they pick, they hear a really high pitched screeching sound. All in all, this phone is appalling. This could have been such a brilliant phone. Don't get me wrong. I did LOVE this phone and I still carry it as my 'work' phone today because of it's brilliant small size. But the problems with the txt messaging and sim card are dreadful. I've had this phone 15 months now. For the first 7-8 months I thought it was perfect. And to be truthful, it was. But then the problems began with the text messages. EVERY time I tried to send one, the phone would switch off. So it got to the point where I had to save every message first and then send. At least then it was in the outbox so I didn't have to retype every message. The 'allow sim action' message got unbearable. It was happening constantly. That is NO me dramatising the situation. It was contstant. Then EVERY key push resulted in the phone switching off. I was ready to throw it out of the window but I opened the back, wiped the sim card and I no longer get the message. I've also tried the 'chosing another network and then chosing your own again' and that seems to have stopped the text mesage problem (for now). All in all, a great phone at first, but then it became a nightmare.

This hpone is an excellent phone to have. Its sheer size is the biggest attraction to me as it fits in my pocket and doesn't leave a huge and uncomfortable bulge. The backlight is very bright so it looks good. Some features are a bit useless such as the stopwatch but things like the voice recorder are good for a bit of fun. This phone is also very sturdy as i have dropped it many times and it has never given me any grief over the year that i have owned it. I've read that other users had problems with it turning itself off and stuff, this must have been an early problem and must have been fixed by the time i bought mine. An excellent must have phone for someone who doesnt want a swanky camera and colour screen etc.

I have had this phone now for about 9 months and I have been very pleased with the performance. The only complaint I have is that occasionally it comes up with "Sim Card not recognised" which is annoying but luckily it goes away fairly quick. The small size is extremly useful for me as I carry the phone in my trouser pocket while at work and I don't want something the size of a brick! The only improvements needed are the addition of a colour screen and the use of polyphonic ringtones but I guess that if Nokia introduced these it would be competing with some of its own products. I am looking to swap it at the end of the year purely to get something with colour and a better set of ringtones. I am looking at the Nokia 7250i but I will be a little sorry to say goodbye to this one.

Apart from these (relatively minor)problems, I would recommend this phone as you can now get it for free if you're subscribing to a 12 month contract. Plus, the radio is good quality and a very nice option!! Happy buying!!

Highly recommended for people who are looking for a affordable, reliable and fully function phone (if you don't mind not having a digital camera). One of the best phones I've owned and never regretted buying it. Traded it in for a Samsung S300 two days ago and still finds the 8310 a better phone, function wise. I was really happy when I first got this phone as it looks pretty good, and is nice and small. However it began to switch itself off just after I'd written a text message, which became very fustrating. My friend with the same phone found hers would ask: allow sim action, then: how are you? -for some very strange reason. I took mine to a nokia shop and they fixed it within 2 hours. Since then it has very rarely turned itself off. Other good features include the radio, and blue/white light wich makes it very easy to use in the dark. However as regards to text messages, it does not sent linked messages, and although it is useful to be able to store around 150 messages, if you have a lot, or even around 10 in the inbox, it takes a very long time to load (upto 30 seconds!) Which can evidently be very annoying. All in all a good phone, though a little dated now. I also hate the way everyother person owns one, and I think they are too girlie for all those blokes out there wit h them!

Have awarded it 5 stars, even though at the time of writing this, most new phone hae polyphonic ringtones, cameras etc. However, its an excellent phone. Good reception, battery life, looks, small size and weight, ease of use, reception . . .the list goes on. No other problems at all. Over time I have owned a Philips C12, Siemens C35, Nokia 3330 and then this 8310. It was kind of an impulse buy and I thought I had got it right. My C12 although being about as functional as a cardboard cutout never gave me any sort of problems. The C35 was step up but I got bored of it and I thought my 3330 had a few problems such as turning itself off randomly. Then when I opened the 8310 box I was amazed at how small and just plain great this phone looked. For the first couple of weeks it seemed like a dream come true, all the features availible at the time. Ring volume seemed as loud as any others Ive had. Then one morning it crashed when I was writing a text. And from then on Id have to save a copy of the message to my outbox, crash the phone by trying to send a message and then once booted up send the copy from the inbox. I updated to software v5.80 and it seems alright now. I still don't like it anymore and am going to upgrade to a 6100 as I've heard that no problems have been reported with it yet and when i played with it it felt solid and well built. Basically if you buy one expect to have to make a trip to a phone dealer who can upgrade your software (most shops don't actually do it). But if your prepared to do that then you've got yourself a functional but pretty boring phone.

It's wiped my numbers a couple of times, but only ones on phone memory- so keep your more important ones on sim! But it does look gorgeous! Other problems: It restarts itself all the time, its a fault with the phone, I've had my handset replaced 4 times because it has broken/I've lost it, and each handset has restart regularly, usually when using calculator, playing games or texting. One of the times I recieved a new handset was because the ^volume^ button sunk in, and the on/off button did too, which eventually resulted in the phone turning itself off and me being unable to turn it back on again! My brother and two of my friens have the 8310 too, and admittedly, my brother didn't hve problems for about 6months, and one friend has only had it a couple and has had no complaints as yet. The other however was disgusted and hers broke many, many times! people aren't giving this phone bad reviews because they've nothing better to do, it's because it is not reliable, and I would not reccomend it to anyone! It's even put me off Nokias, and in a couple of weeks I will be getting my new phone: PanasonicGD87, which has much better reviews and has better features than any Nokia available.

Despite all the moans & groans here I would say if you are Interested in buying this phone go for it!! these review sites always seem to pull deadheads who post negative feedback on different products, a mobile is a complicated piece of equipment & like any other gadget they can go wrong, afterall thats why you get a 12month guarantee right guys?? OK My opinion of the phone... I just got the 8310, I have in the past owned quite a few mobiles (more recent ones include the Nokia 3310 / 3510 / Sagem MY3026e / Erricson T28s / Siemens A50 & others) The Nokia 8310 is without doubt in my opinion the most stylish phone on the market, I love the way the front panel lights up, I love the cool grey display illumination, the clarity of the incoming speech is tops, it charges relativly quickly, battery life is good (not as good as 3510) its small in your hand & more importantly small in your pocket, this phone is the biz!! My only critisms are 1. the ring tones are old hat, polyphonic tones are absent which are pretty much standard now on even cheap phones, Nokia should have updated the phone with this feature, 2. my other critism is the ring tones & that lovely startup tone when switching the phone on are way too quiet, fine if the phones in your pocket.. but if you are like me & leave your phone laying around in the house you are unlikely to hear it ring if you are a few rooms away from it, other than this I cant fault it!! Overall: Great Phone, Great Looks, Great Performance, Dont waste your time reading the negative feedbacks, these people just like to whinge about anything they can, as for Ericsson's being better I can say that any Erricson Ive ever owned (and ive owned several) are well known for dropping reception & a signal can only be obtained by swithing phone off & back on again) never had this problem with Nokias

It is so easy to use like all nokia phones and the radio is great. I also have a nokia 7210 and the reception is much better on the little 8310. Bad points - The screen is small and not in colour, but then the phone is small too. No polyphonic ringtones - but some dislike them anyway. This phone is also no weakling, mine has been accidently dropped many a time only to been unharmed.
