Nokia 7650 Review
Phone rating:
Review: February 2003. Updated December 2007.
The Nokia 7650 was the original multimedia smartphone, but it's looking very
dated now. With a relatively small display and just 4096 colours, it can't do
justice to the imaging features available. The memory is also very poor at just
3.6 Mbytes and cannot be expanded. Finally the weight of the thing is just too
much! A great piece of history, and groundbreaking in its time, but not fit
for purpose today! RIP Nokia 7650!
Features of the Nokia 7650 include:
- Integrated digital camera (VGA, 640 x 480 pixels)
- WAP 1.2.1 (GPRS), email
- High Speed Data (HSCSD) - max 43.2 kilobits per second
- MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service)
- Picture messaging
- Downloadable Java applications
- Colour display (176 x 208 pixels)
- Graphical user interface with Symbian operating system
- Joystick with 5-way navigation
- Bluetooth wireless technology
- Integrated handsfree speaker
- T9 predictive text messaging
- Voice recorder
- 3.6 MB dynamic memory for photo album, phonebook, calendar, messages and
add-on applications
- Infrared modem
- Voice dialling (25 names)
- 5 games
- Clock, calculator
- Size: 114 x 56 x 26 mm
- Weight: 154g
- Battery standby: 100 - 150 hours
- Battery talktime: 2 - 4 hours
- Dual band

How can u say something bad about this phone? I just don`t get it! How
can u say "this phone is not for use in 2005!it`s damn rubbish!Do not
buy!" Of course this phone is over-dated but if u make a objective review
bare in mind that this phone was launched in 2003!What did u expect?
Technology evolves!Don`t say bad things about NOKIA 7650!How many of
you know that this is the all time no1 flawles phone(if you aren`t so
unlucky to buy a messed-up second hand one!)!It has an ARM1040 cpu that
runs at 104 MHz with series 60 Symbian upgradable software(wich is like
the Godfather of all modern Symbian based phones!-and for those of you
that don`t kow much obout phones, i`d say that this is like Windows
for mobile phones!)It has 4096 color display and low memory. So what
did you expect for the first quarter of 2003?Back then i`m sure u didn`t
even know what bluetooth is!Sure it`s big but let`s face it it`s the
first of Nokia`s Symbian based phones, and evan today Smartphones like
this one are just BIG(6600-the best example! So don`t talk about phones
if u don`t know much about them and especially MAKE AN OBJECTIVE REVIEW!
PS:I still use 7650 and a 6600!7650is by far more stable in intensive
Cpu usage!

Still even now many people who have no knowledge about Technologies
thinks that Nokia 7650 is the latest and new model of Nokia with slider
for the first time!...they don't know that it's a very old model! but
still they love it more than 6600 or any other mobile companies because
of it's design but the features may not suit today's technology but
it may well come in useful ways...Actually really i say that the nokia
manufacturers really manufactured and engineered 7650 perfectly good
than other's and today's nokia smartphones......when after the next
model arrives...we treat 7650 an old model...it's not right...I should
say that 7650 has the best mobile design and performance ever made from
nokia!...Great credits to Nokia...And no wonder Samsung D500 had won
the best handset awards 2005...it's almost a copy of 7650....So hope
for the best to nokia do make better models in near future...All the
best to NOKIA

This was an excellent phone in it's day but that was when I bought over
two years ago. It did crash sometimes and unfortunately, on mine, switching
it on became a real pain so was was only switched off when boarding
aeroplanes. The Bluetooth is very restricted in its capabilities although
I was aware of this when I bought it. The synch with Outlook was good.
After much research, especially on this website, I consider the Motorola
V635 to be a successor to the 7650 and a pretty good one at that. Note
that it does split the address book into seperate entries on loading
from Outlook. Also the context dependent use of the menukey needs to
be understood.

2 yrs why the 7650 wasn't the "Matrix Revolution" phone >:) i will not
get another 7650, possibly not even a Nokia; PLUS camera & video SW;
address book; games; GPRS & WAP; availability of applications for Symbian
OS60 (file mgr., task mgr., games); general interface once got used
to the idea of it having an operating system (Symbian). MINUS unable
to program a phone call in the calendar )can't press DIAL button when
the alarm goes off; you have to look up the name in the address book...
or type it in :(( ; somewhat unpredictable battery life (depending on
used applications); interface with PC sucks (only bluetooth and can't
copy everything, only address book/agenda and photos). SHOW STOPPER
for use keen to use a head set, that is... the jack for the head set
is beside the antenna (design flaw) and the signal out gets SCRAMBLED
beyond re cognition; can't use a head set (not even BT, which requires

Bought this phone second hand as I wasnt able to afford a flash up to
date phone on pay as you go (which is what I wanted as opposed to contract).
Has been brilliant so far however I have encountered the same problems
with it switching off and of course frustrated at the limited memory.
These problems have been few and far between and havent annoyed me.
I think its inevitable with the current generation of mobile phones
where too many features are crammed in and not enough memory to run
them all that these problems occur. Having seen other phones, I still
feel the image quality of the screen holds its own even though its an
'old phone'. True, its a little on the big side. Overall, Nokia created
a fantastic phone but its definately eclipsed by newer models now. Compared
to a friends SPV phone, the Nokia works alot better and has alot less
bugs. I just hope the quality of the OS improves in Nokias future phones.

a sony ericsson k700i due to the difference in size, but this and the
looks are probably the only thing bad about this phone, the picture
quality even 2 years after it came out probably still rivals many of
the phones on sale, memory is fairly spacious as well as a videocamera
which was a very rare feature for any phone to have in 2002. Batteries
can be purchased for about £3 on ebay which would fix most problems
to do with battery life and overall one of the best phones i have had.

Hi! I think this phone is abosoloutly amazing. I think that the look
of it is nice and unique. The interface is nice and user friendly and
it even has it's own OS System. The Java and GPRS is very good and handy.
Over the GPRS you can download the Video Recorder which is outstanding,
you can record up to 30 seconds (according to the lighting). The polyphonic
ringtones are lovely and clear, so you can always hear your phone ringing.
The games are really good, with nice 4096 colour display graphics. The
camera is amazing quality with the Night Mode, for use in Dim light
but is not half as effictive as a flash, but still very good. The zoom
after you take a photo is outstanding so you can have a full screen
photo! You can't normally get that on other phones. You can download
a lock, so that you have security over who looks at your images, which
is very useful. :D. I don't really mind if people think that the phone
is big, because it's smaller than the 3310, for crying out loud!!! I'
m very happy with this phone and i'm going to keep hold of it for a
long, long time! :D Thankyou!

screen, very easy to use, clear ond loud handsfree speaker, excellent
internal speaker, good memory capacity, good games and as for the size,
it's way smaller than the bricks that were around in the 80s + far more
technology and I buy for the quality of the internals not the externals,
the calendar and To Do list is excellent, I would be lost without it.

This mobile phone does pack a lot in terms of features, but what I don't
like is the relatively short battery life and especially the memory
capacity. I wonder why the memory counter (in the App.manager found
in TOOLS) fails to update itself thoroughly although you have deleted
entries in contacts and calendar, sent and received SMS messages, photos
in images, and cleared the log? It was as if the phone uses up memory
both in storing and deleting entries. Does this phone have a recycle

This phone is big and bold. The 7650 is hard to get round and couldnt
find the ringtones for about a week until I looked inside the manual.
The menu button is confusing however the function of recording your
own songs to use as ringtones is a great add on. Nevertheless, its camera
functions are some of the best quality I've seen, and the screen is
big enough for my Grandad to see! This is one of the better phones Ive
had for features wise (And I've been through over 10 phones in the last
6 months). Im only 14 and as a teenager I find it confusing, big, but
very compact. It has everything you could possibly want in a phone.
Its a shame its not smaller. Overal, I would still recommend it to more
of an adult worker for its calendar functions GPRS, WAP etc. It stores

video, pictures, email, gprs, mms, java games, loads...one of the best.
I have had it a year and there are no phones that come close (apart

cos i bought this fone from a friend for only £80. With the fone i got
8 java games, a really good application which allows video playback
and LOADS of ringtones. However, the battery life is sooo unbelievably
short!! This is cos the screen is soo fat the battery life is drained
and also, whenever you turn the fone off and switch it back on the battery
lufe is drained by about 25%. The pictur and feature quality overall
is rele good but if you wana get a practical and swanky fone your probably
better off with a 7250i or even better a sharp gx10i which is my personal

Whoever said that this phone is fragile must be kidding. I once slipped
on a curb during a rainshower and fell hard while holding on to my 7650.
The full impact of my fall was on the 7650 as I tried to break my fall
on the hand that held the 7650. The face of 7650 hit the pavement and
to my great surprise, it did not even suffer a scratch. I weigh 176
lbs. I think the 7650 which I've had for almost a year now is excellent.
The only thing missing is a tri-band which I need when I travel to the
United States as the system their is not supported by the 7650. I have
a Nokia 6310i for this purpose but I will trade if for a Nokia 3100

This phone is .... AMAZING. What more can i say, the phone has the best
technology i have seen, when it comes to features and functions, it
clearly outpaces the samsung v200, the 7250i and many other phones.
On all phones the camera after a few weeks becomes a novelty which quickly
wears off, the design of the phone is excellent, apart from it being
a bit on the big-side. I have read that some ringtones are quiet, but
that might be the particular ringtone, as more traditional ringtones
are alot louder. The screen on this phone beats other phones hands-down,
and the overall design and intereactivity beats many others. I have
used other phones such as 7210's, v200's, gx-10's, sl55's, 3510i's,
and been lucky to use the new samsung p400 for a week end. And although,
the 7650 is on the large side, its still alot better than the other
phones, and in my opinion any person who wants to run appz on their

than shop prices, i picked up mine for £120. p.s. if you want your phone

though it came out quite a while ago). I asked the person at the till
what was better, he said the 7650 had better polyphonic ringtones, screen
quality and camera quality. So I went with the 7650. I've constantly
been going through the features ever since it had finished charging

Had my 7650 for 3 months now, it's had a good run of testing. It's so
far had a fair to middling life, neither being cosseted nor seriously
abused. I've found it pretty excellent overall. I like the fact that
the integrated camera lens is protected by the rigid plastic cover when
not in use. The picture quality, whilst not superb, is perfectly reasonable
for day to day use - main downsides would be slight blurring toward
the edges of the image, and not exceptional low-light capability (although
there is a low-light option, which however needs the phone to be held
perfectly still using a prop like a wall). These aren't really criticisms
though, just mild gripes. navigation round the symbian operating system
is lovely, really easy after a little practise, and it seems to have
a pretty big memory for received texts. The most major annoyance I've
found (mine's on the orange network) is that you have to take the phone
out of its leather case and open the keypad if you want to delete voicemails
- this can be set up via the joystick to avoid having to do this if
you want, but even doing it that way is a bit tricky. I have experienced
the odd software lock up, as others have noted, so far always clearable
by a power cycle, but it hasn't yet become anything like a major problem.
All in all I'm a happy customer & I'd happily recommend this phone.

I had been waiting for this phones release for some time, and so when
it was finally released I could not hold back any longer, snapping one
up early. Due to this I had to suffer many flaws in the phones software.
This included the white out and restarting of the phone randomly that
many others have experienced and occasionally the total loss of reception,
which only returns when you restart the phone. Less occasionally I have
had the phone freeze up with java. These believe to be only problems
in the early versions of the phone and are now undoubtedly fixed. What
makes this phone so good though is its connectivity, its ease to use
and the quality of its pictures. To this date (as of February 2003)
it has the best quality pictures on the market, through integrated cameras
or otherwise, that I have seen, at least. On top of this, my phone has
takes a bit of a beating since its purchase (falling off desks, out
of car doors, etc) and has survived with only a minor scratch proving
its hardiness. Don't, however, take it too close to sandy areas since
sand can get under the screen (I learnt the hard way). Throughout using
this phone, i found so many little features that make it stand out from
the rest, down to even having a proximity sensor, automatically changing
from loudspeaker to normal when you pick up the phone. If you are looking
for a camera phone, or just a good phone in general, then this should
be on the top of your list and i suggest it will continue to beat off
its competition until 3g properly gets involved and/or the Nokia 6220
is released.

When I first got the phone it looked & seemed great :) but after a few
days I noticed it began to switch itself off -- I could be using the
phone when the display would fade to white & the phone would restart
itself -- as this only happened occasionally I could tolerate it. A
few days later I began to get error messages when typing txts & going
through photo album, again I could tolerate it. Then the phone decided
to take a turn for the worse. It got to the point where I could not
get into 'Messages' or 'Calls log' -- if I attempted to access these
options I would get numerous errors. Enough was enough, I sent the phone
back & 3 MONTHS later I received the phone back, STILL BROKEN, with
the excuse that I was having these problems because my sim wasn't media
