Nokia 7600 Review

Phone rating:

Review: October 2004. Updated January 2005.

The Nokia 7600 is Nokia's first generally available 3G handset in the UK (the 6650 was not fully released in the UK). It's equipped with a wide range of multimedia capabilities including video recording and multimedia playback.

Disappointingly for a 3G phone it does not support video messaging and the screen is the worst on any current 3G phone, but hey, it's a Nokia!

The multimedia player lets you play music files stored in MP3 or AAC format, using either a stereo headset or the phone's integrated loudspeaker. Music files can be downloaded wirelessly from a compatible PC using the Nokia Audio Manager software which is included in the Nokia PC Suite. You can also use MP3 or AAC music tracks as ringtones.

Connectivity is excellent, with a choice of USB cable, infrared and wireless Bluetooth™ connections. The Bluetooth headset is essential really, as the phone is clearly not designed to be used in a conventional hand-held way for making calls.

This brings us on to the usability question. First the shape: it's a love-it or hate-it shape, and that's up to the individual, but there's no denying that the keypad loses points when it comes to ease-of-use. Single-handed texting is out of the question.

Overall the Nokia 7600 is a strange beast. It's design is unique, which can be good or bad depending on your view. It's a 3G phone, but without the high level of functionality normally associated with 3G phones. It's key features are surely video recording and music playback, but with a poor display, excessive weight and inadequate memory it doesn't really make the grade.

Features of the Nokia 7600 include:

  • Digital camera (640 x 480 pixels) & video recorder (128 x 96 pixels, 15 frames per second)
  • 65,536 colour active matrix TFT display (128 x 160 pixels)
  • Music player for MP3 and AAC files
  • Voice recorder
  • Multimedia player
  • Stereo headset
  • Integrated handsfree speaker
  • MP3/AAC ringtones
  • Xpress-on™ sleeves
  • Multimedia messaging, email
  • Downloadable Java™ games
  • Bluetooth wireless technology, infrared and USB connectivity
  • WAP 2.0, GPRS
  • XHTML browser
  • High-speed data: 384 kilobits per second in 3G networks, or 57.6 kilobits per second in GSM networks
  • 30 Mbytes internal dynamic memory for contacts, video clips, images, tones, messages, music files, add -on applications, calendar, and to-do notes
  • WCDMA/GSM 900/1800 dual mode (automatic switching between bands and modes)
  • Size: 87 x 78 x 19 mm
  • Weight: 123g
  • Talktime: 2 - 4 hours
  • Battery standby: 7 days

I have had this phone for 10 months - on 3, at first it was great, unique, caught everyones eye, However that soon wared off when Nokia bought out similar versions. The phone itself is a nice idea, i got used to the stage layout and the amount of space you are given is great. But it is not compatible with video messaging, screen savers dont work unless you only view them from the gallery. The reception of three is discusting, i live relativly close to birmingham but i have an average of 1 bar, therefore i am paying to use a phone i cant use! I have noticed also that it likes to delete saved messages if you have not viewed them for a while. Additionaly, the video is not as good as it could be and the quality of speaker is good but could be bigger, you only have to move the phone slightly and you cant hear the person on the other end at all!. Overall, i will be happy to get another phone, nokia i like, 7600 are okish, 3G are pitiful! I wouldnt recommend this phone really, unless you need an experience not to remember!.

This phone seems too be getting mixed reveiws and I can see why. It's a bit like Uma Thurman. You either thinks she the most gorgeous thing on two legs or you thinks she is a gangly ugly bird with big feet. I won't say where I stand on that one but what I will say is that this is a pretty decent phone in my veiw. More features than an odeon multiplex and more extras that a packet of strong mints. Yeah I know the phone has a distinctly odd apperance but I think its quite endering. And as for the whole texting thing all I have too say is, Its good to talk. Also when you consider it has MP3, it has sod all memory but if you want too store loads of songs buy a bloody Ipod. It has enough memory for music too keep me from dozing off on the tube in the morning so that will do me. The interface is really easy too use and I like the way eveything has its place. It ain't cluttered or confusing and the screen, despite reports to the contrary, is very clear. Look at it this way folks, how many other phone generate this many differences in opinion. It's a talking point. And this alone merits it an extra star in my veiw. There is a draw back. Due to the funky layout texting is a pain, although I personly think its a waste of time so it ain't of consequence to me. Any way thats me done weither you love it or hate it you can't deny it is an experience owning one. Thanks JC

Using GPRS over Bluetooth allows me to quickly access my emails while I am out and about, particularly when I don't have access to wireless LAN access point! ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!" -those 2 words are all that are needed. Looks cool, functionality is way and above any other phone I have seen, and on top of all that, video recordings!! Go out and get one now! This phone was simply excellent value for money, £30 from CPW. It has several killer features: The design - I guess you either love it or loath it! Good quality camera - Unlike many phones, this one comes with a USB cable, so you don't have to pay 25 pence emailing pictures to yourself when you want to see them on a big screen. Mp3 Ringtones - The holy grail of ringtone technology, now you can edit your favorite tracks to use as ringtones, rather than paying £2 to download a tinny midi track. Unfortunately, there are a couple of let-downs that stop it getting that final star: 32MB memory, no card slot - 32 MB is fine for the ringtones and photos, but only enough for about five mp3 tracks, unless you enjoy listening in AM radio quality. Quirky key layout - Unless you have Very long thumbs, you'll need two hands to write text messages. If like myself you consider text messages a waste of time, consider this a five star phone.

I have had the Nokia 7600 since August 2004. Had it not been free and come with a free hands free earpiece I would not have chosen it. The phone is not very user friendly. It is difficult to hold. It is difficult to dial as the keys are either side of the display. Also the telephone is not compatible with Windows ME so I cannot download any photos to my PC.

It is a really good phone the recorder is 1 min not very long but i hardly ever use it the pictures are very good quality and look even better when put on the computer the only let down points are textin ye its a bit hard at first but you will get used to it soon and the memory thememory isnt enough for it too be an mp3 player but if you dont put songs on it it will last you ages. the video recorder quality isnt so good but its still viewable you can record on default (10 seconds) or maximum (50 mins)its signal isnt that bad ive never lost full signal the games are really rubbish unless you like backgammon and another tetris type game plus you can rent games off 3pay, 3pay is really good i think it givs ya 5 pound credit and 50 mins talk time or 75 texts (you get to choose) 20 mini movies (these are multimedia messages except u can only send videos and 20 video talk mins but it is not compatible with this phone, the battery life is really good so all in all a really really good phone ignore what other people say if it is bad it is a really good phone buy it plus if you dont like 3pay you can get it unlocked for free at www.trycktill.com *** EDITOR'S NOTE: WE INCLUDE THIS LINK FOR INFORMATION. This phone is a joke! I've have now had it for three months and still can't find any positive with it. I've bought it for two reasons, it was a Nokia (must admit that I've with this phone totally lost all confidence in this brand) and that it was so different from all other phones (wanted something outstanding, not what I experinced untill today the most useless phone that I ever had) First how to use it, the keyborad sucks, it is anoying to try to write SMS (which I as most do quiet often). Second the design, (must admit this was the buying reason for me :-( ) it is not just of coincidence there are now other phone designed like this, it is common sense that one DON'T design it like the 7600. So my advice DON'T buy it if expect yourself actually to use it, the 7600 is totaly useless!!!

This is by no means a rubbish phone but you need to be aware that, although you'd expect the nice Nokia Symbian OS, it's kind of unique on this one and nowhere near as advanced. Plus the buttons are really "plasticky" which is never clear in the photos. Camera works well though, not too bad.

Well, quite frankly I would rather spend my money on a chocolate teapot. The screen quality isn't very clear which was a shame as I wanted to take some photos for a special occasion of my daughter's, and as for the signal it would probably be better coverage in Timbuctu. I really am outraged it's a complete disgrace that they make the phone look so good. If Nokia think that they're doing a good deal, then I'm Naomi Campbell and Tony Blair has managed to have some sense.

I've had this phone for about 8 months (as at December '04). I still don't know what possessed me to purchase it, but I can tell you, this phone only wins on face value. The screen is not very bright. The keypad is just plain un-ergonomic. I should have waited for the 7610, or the Sharp GX30i. I have a Toshiba E740 PDA (don't get me started on that one, I seem to attract lemons....). My nokia thinks it's the boss, and won't communicate over Bluetooth. I can't get the nokia to work with WinXP Pro as a modem. An interesting thing to note is that when the phone can't find 3 reception (my mobile carrier), it wavers between 1 bar of 3 and 1 bar of roaming, however when i force the phone on to roaming, it gets full reception! Sound quality (and volume) out of this little speaker at the back is DOUBLED when you remove the back cover. Nokia should have investigated that further. Sound quality in a voice call is very good. This is something Nokia has got right. It's a trend I've noticed in the 3315, 6610, and 2100 (other nokia's I've owned). I know you people in Cyberworld will tell me off for complaining about such 'luxuries' in a phone, but when you are paying AUD$100 per month to use this thing (with calls), you expect A LOT!

And teh Video may not be too great, but it is good for a phone with only 128 x 160 pixels. I personally like the MP3, but i do have trouble with the fact that it only has 30MB memory and no MMC Slot. its ok. if u get it on 3 u can unlock it. good thing. also it has good features. mp3 player and video camera. but what put me off from buyin this fone is the shape. it has 5 buttons on 1 side and another 5 on the other. text messages are a pain and calling people you have to hold the fone in a weird way. the shape lets it down.i would'nt buy this. oh and 1 more note. on 3 it costs £45 but on t mobile it costs over £300.

I somehow or rather do agree with the writer of this review. Nokia 7600 breaks new ground in its approach to mobile phone making. The 7600 introduces a new form factor to mobile phones. Some call it leaf-shaped while others say it resembles a bar of soap.I frequently refer to it as "The diamond shaped phone".Compared to the ease with which music was transferred with the 3300, this was a totally teriible experince. The buttons on both sides of the screen bring a new element to the way text messaging is conducted. However the navigational joystick or joypad if you prefer, clashed with the menu function which works by pressing down on said joystick. What happens is that the unpredictability of the joystick makes selecting a particular function with the joystick an iffy matter. How should this phone be rated? On the positive side,it has a whopping 30MB of internal memory.Video clips go up to 1.4Mb and the 7600 even supports 3GPP streaming. For those who are wondering about what that 'pee-pee' thing is,3GPP is the video format common to symbian phones like the 3650,3660,6600,6630,7610 etc. On one hand, this one is definitely a head-turner and definitely very beautiful to look at. It has all the requisite technologies such as infared and bluetooth, plus even e-mail support. On the other hand, the unconventional layout and operation makes it a slight pain to use. Usually,series-60 types have sunken screens, but this one does not,and the user is advised to be careful so as not to accidentally scratch the screen. However i must say that the 7600 is slighty big,and holding around felt a little foolish instead of fashionable.

At the moment i think this is a quite good phone, not amazing but very good. Its just right for me. I'm not into the video calls but just the camera and video recorder. And at least its a phone that works well at the moment and is colour. im not bothered about the mp3 player or music player. i got it at the carphone warehouse for £35 cos i did a trade in. The video is quite good for filming and other stuff. the internet is brilliant because the colour was great. i would recommend it to anyone on a budget and wants a camera or video phone but its up 2!

My mate has this phone and I think it is very good with the video recording and the camera and mp3 and music player. But there are a few let downs. It's only £29.99 + the £15 airtime to make £44.99. The phone is soooooooo ugly and I dropped it after a few minutes of using it because the shape is so uncomfortable. The camera and video space gallery only take up about 3/5 of the screen which isnt great. And at the moment you can only buy it on 3 and with 3 you HAVE to top it up by £15, £25 or £35 each month and if you dont top up by the deadline you get cut off and you can only receive incoming texts and calls etc. no wonder its so cheap. Its just like having a pay monthly phone in a way. The good thing about the video is altogether the videos has 40 minutes space. The camera's ok and it has a self timer its just the network and shape that is the problem. You can buy it handset only but its about £200 - 3250! But anyway it's an ok phone

It is ugly, but I've seen uglier and it's kind of growing on me now. The camera isn't bad quality and it comes with a cd and cable so you can link it to your computer but as with most cameras on phones it's really just a gimmick, if you want to take really decent pictures you'd be better with a real camera. I was really attracted to it because it plays mp3s but it doesn't have that much memory and there's no slot for a memory card so I doubt I'll get enough on it for my journey to work. You can have the mp3s as your ringtones though, which is a smile. All in all not bad though, hopefully it'll last longer than my SL55.

I have had nothing but trouble with this phone. Carphone Warehouse say it is the network. 3 say it is the handset. Either way I have been passed from pillar to post with everyone passing the buck. I had useless reception for the first 6 months. I could not send multimedia messages nor download rings or games. After a short while I could no longer use the connection to my cpu to back up or download/upload music etc. Today, I took it to carphone warehouse again to have new software installed which I was assured would fix the problem. I have good signal strength now but I still cannot download ring tones etc or connect to my pc. In addition, I have lost the GPRS button and cannot even access the functions that make 3 network unique and attractive. I am on the phone to technical support on hold right now after 6 hours of trying to get this phone to work. Now carphone warehouse is passing me back and forth between departments. I dont know if all nokia 7600's are this way but I am certain I will not be trying another one to find out.

After owning this phone for three months I can safely say that I wish I hadn't gone with 3 to get this phone. Its the standard Nokia problem of not connecting to newer networks. Apart from 3's service being so poor I think putting Average on the phone rating is purely being kind. The battery life isn't great, and the keys do get annoying after a while. I've two months of complaining to 3 about the phone and service I'm finally getting rid of this phone.

i bought this phone sim free unlocked to all networks for £150. I feel that this was an excellent investment and do not regret for one second parting with the money. The only one very minor let down is the inability to add extra memory but that dosent come as too much of a problem. The camera on this phone is really good quality, decent video quality up to a length of 2 minutes 30 seconds. The speaker through which the ringtones and music files play isnt too bad actually considering this is still a phone. Admitedly this is the type of phone you love or you hate, but i am fortunately one of those few who happen to love this "unique" design and would recommend this phone to anyway.

What a great phone, bought it off ebay as its not out here yet, and after getting used to the shape and buttons its a great phone, the screen is big and great quality. great menus and nokias great build quality. decent battery life for a camera phone even though the battery is wafer size. the voice commands and mms and the 3g features are brilliant. although you can't make video calls, but thats ok because you can make videos and send them. and video calls kill batterys anyway. you either love or hate the design, i found it refreshingly different. and the HF ringtones and bluetooth and all the other many features are supurb. everything you want in a phone or mobile multimedia centre. Great job by Nokia again.
