Nokia 6822 Review
Phone rating:
Review: September 2005.
The Nokia 6822 is based on the previous 6820
model, and incorporates the same fold-out keyboard design. The display
rotates 90° when the keyboard is fully opened. Like the 6820, the
6822 includes a range of functions including a camera with video recorder,
Bluetooth wireless connectivity and high speed data transfer by EDGE.
It's amazing how Nokia have managed to pack so much technology into
a compact and lightweight phone!
At the same time, however, the 6822 retains many of the problems of
the older model. The keyboard is not as easy to use as it looks, and
is partly novelty rather than a full replacement for a real keyboard.
The display, whilst upgraded to 65k colours is still very small and
lags behind the competition considerably. The camera, again upgraded,
is still poor compared with other phones at this price. And perhaps
the worst feature of the 6822 is the shockingly small amount of memory,
which really limits the capabilities of the phone.
Features of the Nokia 6822 include:
- Full messaging keyboard plus conventional keypad and 5-way joystick
- VGA camera (640 x 480 pixels) with night mode
- Video recorder
- Display: 65,536 colours, 128 x 128 pixels
- Integrated loudspeaker
- Voice dialing, voice commands, voice recorder, conference call capability
for up to 6 participants
- Speed dialing
- Messaging: SMS, MMS, Instant Messaging, email
(SMTP, POP3 and IMAP4)
- Predictive text input
- Java applications
- XHTML web browser
- Personal Information Management
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, Infrared
- Data Transfer: EDGE high-speed data transfer,
GPRS class 10, EGPRS MSC 4 (3+1), HSCSD
- Memory: 3.5 Mbytes
- Triband
- Size: 106 x 46 x 21 mm
- Weight: 100g
- Talktime: 3 - 8 hours
- Battery standby: 7 - 14 days

This was the phone I owned for the longest amount of time - nearly four
years. It withstood numerous drops, and even a mistaken full immersion
into a sink full of water for about 2 seconds. Amazingly, it kept on
working.
The built-in keyboard was fun, but not very useful as I was never much
of a texter. Downloadable software was also not very useful or good.
The camera and screen were not great.
Bluetooth, on the other hand, was both useful and good. The size was
impressive. And again, it was solid and dependable.
This phone was the third (and last) Nokia phone I owned.

I received this phone from a friend who didn't need it and it is the
best phone I've ever had. The qwerty keyboard-layout makes texting lighting
fast; a huge bonus for those of us who like to write grammatically proper
messages. The compact design works well as a phone and the flip-out/screen-flip
is the most brilliant piece of cellphone design I have seen to date.
It is practical and ergonomic. I love feeling the keys under my fingers
and after a while, was able to type on it without watching the keys.
I have used many different phones in my time and am currently using
a Blackberry Curve. None can hold a candle to the NOKIA. It was virtually
indestructible and though it was rather beat up and scuffed, it worked
flawlessly. Tragically, my beloved phone did not survive being run-over
by a car. I am currently shopping around for another one. Hopefully
NOKIA will resurrect this superb design.

love this phone, it's the best phone I have ever had & would love to
replace it with the same one.I'm sad to be told these models are discontinued. The
full qwerty keyboard is wonderful & makes it so easy to text yet it
is such a small phone & so easy to handle.I've searched so many websites

The people who have rated this phone as rubbish really don't know what
they're saying, as they've no doubt had a cursory glance at the features,
realised it's not pimped enough for their tiny minds and have returned
to the shop to get something shinier and able to play R&B at loud volumes
on the bus. This phone is brilliant as it has the full QWERTY keyboard
and actually promulgates good grammar, by having the keyboard laid out
with quick access to punctuation marks, it means I can send texts in
the way I prefer (long hand, with correct grammar) and do it easily.
I've had this phone for 5 years also, and has all the features a casual
user needs - the ability to the phone and the ability to text - I don't
need it to be a be all and end all device, so i suits me perfectly.
I'm going to rue the day it eventually gives up the ghost, by then everything
will be touchscreen and I like tactility.

I bought this phone when it came out back in early 2005 as an upgrade
of the Nokia 6800 that I had at the time. I love the layout of the keyboard
and favor it to the keyboards on other messaging phone. I AM STILL ON
THE ORIGINAL PHONE THAT I BOUGHT. This is early 2010 which means the
phone has lasted me FIVE YEARS. I just bought a brand new Samsung Gravity
today so I will not be using the 6822 anymore. I might give it a burial.
My only complaint is the lack of memory. I believe the whole phone only
has 3.5 memory and I like to take pictures of funny things that I see.
I am always at max memory capacity so each time I want to take a new
picture I have to decide which current pic I want to delete to make
room for the new one. Other than the horrible lack of memory, I love
the phone and hate that I have to get a new one (this phone is finally
dying on me after five long years).

it has NEVER let me down. Yep, it's a bit basic compared to newer phones

i HAVE IT ON AN O2 CONTRACt, and the hundreds of pounds I've saved and

All in all, it scores 10 out of 10 from me!

After getting a new E71 and finding many common features I took for
granted no longer available, I have returned to my 6822. The keyboard
is perfect for text and yet normal one-handed operation is still possible
whilst folded closed (unlike the E71). The only real disadvantage is
the silver keyboard which has poor contrast indoors when the blue backlighting

I use many smartphones in my work. However, I always carry a Nokia as
a back-up or when I need a no-frills business only phone with me. My
6822 fills this gap. It is easy to simply dial-out & answer simple text
communication quickly and effectively. It is easy to see that it cannot
compete in the 'features' or 'fad of the moment', however it accomplishes
the primary tasks of telephone and text-messenger better that all the
phones I have used, (such as Palm 600, Blackberry 8830 & HTC Wing).
And, I will add, it does these tasks faster and in a truly user friendly
manner. I have owned the 6800 as well, but I was happy to get bluetooth
& a camera in this model. Essentally, a well designed phone with adequate
features. For someone who needs a basic phone, this is an outstanding

seems to me that the RINGTONES dont work, only the polynoic tones work!
2) Not one of NOKIA's polynoic ringtones are good 3) The screen is kind
of small 4) The buttons are a little too small but managable 5) Defenatly
needs a better camera and more sharp colors 6) As again, if the screen
was bigger it would have been a nicer phone 7) I heard that the cell
phone gets dirty easily and sadly there is no cover (plastic or rubber
case) for this cell phone yet 8) The warranty is only ONE YEAR 9) It
would be nicer if they gave the customers more choice of colors such
as for ladies (PINK) or for men (BLACK OR NAVY) 10) Last but not least,
Maybe the lighting was a bit more brighter, it is kind of hard to see
sometimes Other than those 10 cons,,, it seems like a pretty nice phone!
And i am pretty happy and glad that Ive purchsed this phone!

What was Nokia thinking when they designed a BUSINESS phone with only

when my sms inbox is full, and i get a new sms, SOMETIMES the phone

It seems to me that those who hate this phone (and isn't hate a tad
over the top - it's only a mobe), are mostly those who didn't do their
homework first, or who want it to be something it didn't pretend to
be in the first place. Shrieking and ranting is NOT constructive criticism,
and is no help to anyone. Let's face it, a phone is a communication
device - the fact that it has a poor camera or video isn't really relevant
- you want a camera, BUY a camera! As for the much maligned poor memory,
there's just no excuse for not knowing this before purchase but, of
course, those who applied a little thought to the problem found a work-around,
rather than just whining about it. It seems, from these reviews, that
those who are happy are those who knew what they were getting into,
bought it because the major features it offered were the most useful
ones for them, i.e., those actually involved in communication - keyboard,
Bluetooth - not extraneous stuff like sucky ringtones and cameras. In
short, they bought it because they wanted a functional phone, not flashy
a toy. Which, of course, is why they are happy - they bought it for
what it actually IS.

feature lacking, socially retarded phone then the Nokia 6822 would win
hands down.

extremely grainy, then the keys quit working on the key board and the
phone would just turn off.

I upgraded to this from the 6820 and wish the newer one had a few of
the older model's characteristics. The keyboard is the most obvious
change as it's smaller than its' predecessor and if you chew your nails
you're going to find it more difficult to use than the older phone's
more solid and larger keyboard.Having said this I am now used to it
and find it ok to type with - though not as good as the older model.
The ringtones' volume was another bad point. The older model was loud
enough to hear in the car or any other noisy envoirenment. Not the new
one! I found that the way round this was to record your own ringtone
using the voicerecorder facility as the recordings are louder than the
polyphonic ringtones. The screen is ok. Better than the older phone
but not as fancy as some other makes. I was dissapointed that it had
no radio though as the quality of signal on the old one was great and
I'd use it often. Also a pity that the phone only uses poly tones. MP3
would be nice! Though the memory is small, if you delete all the preloaded
tones/themes etc (mostly naff) there's enough space for about 20 photos
and 12 large recordings, which I find is enough if I could get the PC
software to work to synchronise the PC with the phone. I've tried and
tried to get it to work using the DKU cable thing (£38!) but to no avail.
I'll have to get a pc with bluetooth! The phone looks nicer than the
old one and the camera on mine is really good - better than other makes
I've seen in action! The calender is also a godsend as it reminds me
of everything I have to do! the voice recorder is handy well - though
the recording quality seems to be getting more distorted as the months
fly by. I'd like an upgrade now though!

I've used this phone for the last 13 months. I "upgraded" from the 6820.
The good points, excellent battery life, qwerty keyboard BRILLIANT.
Reliabilty - 5* Bad points - almost useless camera. Sound/Ring tone
etc. is useless far too low despite set on max. I would often miss a
call despite the phone being in my shirt pocket !!! the vibrate alert
is essential to compensate for this. Tiny memory, take 2/4 pictures
& the memory is full !!! Supposed to serve the business side of things
- I don't think so, I've had to rely on other gadgets to do that for
me. My final touch, I'm waiting for the new E70 to replace it asap overall
rating - 2 stars, and thats only for the reliability and the unique
keyboard.

I had this phone at the end of a contract and more out of desperation
than anything else. There are just so many phones on the market i didn't
know which to choose and so ended up with this one. At first it was
cool with a flip out keyboard that i could make star trek noises to
as I opened it. Since, it has proved to be nothing but an annoyance,
the keyboard is too fiddly to use, i always use the front number pad,
the memory is rubbish and i always have trouble when trying to use bluetooth.

HEY! This review is written by a TEENAGER so listen carefully cos everyone
knows we are the experts!!! HAHAHA!! lol FIRST OFF! Don't listen to
anything the 'poor-raters' have said, firstly I'd like to say 'If you
want a long video record then buy a camcorder, fool! Right..... I have
had this phone since about October and I love it! I am always texting
on it and I think the keypad is great, OK maybe a bit fiddly but then
if it wasnt the phone would have to be massive, eh? A few little problems...
first, about 2 days after i had it, a tiny little speck of dust got
inside the screen and it has been there ever since! ARRGGHH! lol next,
the memory is small, so there's not much space to save pics and vids,
but as i said earlier, buy a digicam you saddos! It's also surprisingly
hard-waring, I mean I am 13 and I haven't broken it yet so that proves
it! This is such a good-looking phone though, all my mates are like
'whoa thats the computer phone that sends emails' and all that jazz,
so I love it! I don't know what the rest of you do but I can access
hotmail and msn on this so thats great!!! Well for me anyway. Other
points.... Battery life good, camera quality good enough, same with
video, and by the way to the IDIOT that wrote 'the nokia 6230i has 1
hour of vid recording, IT DON'T!!! -retard. I just couldn't resist submitting
this when I saw it cos most people don't know how good the phone is!
Anyway that was a long one, but thanks for reading! If I knew you then
I'd give ya my number cos I trust so much in what I've just said that
I reckon I'm 100% right! A MUST for all TEXT ADDICTS! -like me. ~~Steelie~~
p.s. Samsung D500's SUCK!

A great phone for business without buying a enormous monster. Dont care
about ringtones, and if you do you are sad. Dont care about the camera,
I have one of these already. What I could never do without now is the
full keyboard; its a bit fiddly but for the size of the phone it is
pretty bloody good. If you want a toy go elsewhere.

Good phone, better than its predessor,6820 which I used for about a
year, or more. The improvments on Screen Resulation and Camera is not
that good, still a little screen. (for more see my review for Nokia6820)
As I said, I used 6820 a lot, I can type very (VERY!) quickly usuing
its full qwerty keyboard, without any need to look at the keyboard,
my thumbs are too wide! I said this, because I saw some post which are
about the keyboard and said that it is not that easy and ... , but in
my personal exp, it was superb...

Over the last years I have been a heavy user of the Nokia Communicator,
9110 and 9210 (I had 2 of those). The communicator is big and heavy,
and has no vibraring (a real pain). And a communicator is too expensive.
Repairs too. Therefore I chose for this 6822 (brand new). - Contacts,
standard Nokia 60-series interface. Not as a communicator, but sufficient.
Enough telephone/email per contact. - Bluetooth connectivity with Outlook,
excellent!. - View files/Editor, good enough. - Phone part, including
handsfree. Excellent. - Querty keyboard. It is smaller, but therefore
this keyboard has background light (the communicator not). So in the
dark it is much easier. - Screen, it is smaller then the communicator.
I miss the INCREASE button for bigger fonts, so I use my glasses. But
it is sharp enough. - Camera, I don't care. MP3, I don't care either.
- the multi-purpose joystick is great. Endresult: the 6822 is not a
communicator, but for business-purposes, where you are tired of the
Brick-Communicator, and functionality that is too much, and triple the
price, this 6822 is more then sufficient. I hope the durability is good
enough (at least for 1 or 2 years). For Nokia: next time make a phone,
bit bigger, bit bigger screen, no camera or so, but with a big memory
(a 256mb SD-card). That is nice for Business-people.
